We hear about planning a trip for both little kids and his parents and in-laws at the same time. We discuss dining at places like Biergarten, Ohana, 1900 Park Fare, Citricos, and more! Welcome back dear listener. You can't help yourself can you? Following the ENORMOUS success of our English Wine Week series, Ferg & Lee review the week itself. From the big news of the week, to the announcement of the Wine GB awards, we name our favourites and highlight once again the exciting world of English Wine. Lee then raises of the question of just where to have a good wining and dining experience in Oxford. The city may be a seat of culture and learning, and be home to many great wine merchants, but where in town can you go for a great evening of Michelin recommended food and wine pairing? Lee it seems has the answer. He recently attended just such an event at Summertown's Pompette Restaurant. Under the expert guidance and tutelage of Suzy Nemeth, Lee traveled the world of the Loire with wines that were both excellent, and not necessarily obvious. Not only that, it was a culinary trip of excellence. Prepare to be regaled with tales of superb wines, excellent food, and a wonderful evening. Just think about how much it would have been if he wasn't there! Check out Pompette's website for details of future events and get yourself along if you're in the area. We send our thanks to everyone at Pompetter not only for giving Lee a wonderful evening, but also giving us a night off. So sit back, strap in, and enjoy HAVE YOU BEEN TO A WINE DINNER? 6PR Mornings host Liam Bartlett says Mark McGowan must realise that when it came to "his buy, obviously when you're Premier, shouting your round is a bit different". "And when it comes to premium Penfolds wine, at $1000 a bottle, it's a different proposition entirely, isn't it?" "In the world of business and commerce, favours are very easy to pay back, you can return the hospitality quite easily. "But when you're the Premier, how do you return the favour - do you do it through access, through policy settings or do you just ignore it and move on to the next dinner?"See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I’ve spent time this week contemplating my list of 20 things I like to do from Monday’s blog post. David Brooks in The Second Mountain says that “happiness is good, but joy is better. Just as the second mountain is a fuller and richer phase of life after the first mountain, joy is a fuller and richer state beyond happiness…The more you are living a committed life well, the more joy will be your steady state, the frame of mind you carry around with you and shine on others.” David talks about four levels of joy: 1) physical, 2) collective effervescence, 3) emotional, and 4) spiritual.I’m looking at my list again and I’m digging deeper. Do these activities bring me real joy or just the happiness of a goal accomplished or praise received? True joy is when a skin barrier between me and another person or entity fades away and we feel fused together. David reminds us: “We can create happiness, but we are seized by joy.” Brooks says for him, writing is joyful; he can feel his heart rate slow when he writes. I find the same thing happens with my “joy pursuits”, my heart rate slows and a sense of peace engulfs me.My “joy” list, grouped into Brooks’ four level of joys:Physical Joy: Walking/Exercise, Bicycling, Golf, SwimmingCollective Effervescence: Travel, Giving Docent Tours at the Frist Art Museum, Working with young people (post-college)Emotional Joy: Symphony concerts, Plays and Broadway Musicals, Learning SpanishSpiritual Joy: Praying, Worship, Episcopal Monastery Visits, Playing with my dog, Photography, Listening to music/concerts, Writing, Wine/Dinner with Friends, Reading Each day is an opportunity for us to experience joy in our life. Some days joy is delivered to us, and on other days we have to be more intentional to recognize it among the mundane. But each 24 hours is a crucible for joy. In the past 24 hours, I’ve had joy when Walking, Working with Young People, Praying, Listening to music, and Writing. I wonder what the next 24 hours will bring for you and me? Will we choose to live it in joy, or will we settle for less?Blessings, my friend,Agatha
For my spiritual preparation this week for my October Camino Walk, I’m borrowing two questions from discernment processes: 1) which person in the Bible do I relate to the most, and 2) twenty things I like to do.Will you join me in writing about your Bible Hero/Heroine and your 20 things you like to do?The person I most relate to in the Bible is Abigail (1 Samuel 25:14-42).Abigail was a woman of discretion, but she realized when a bad situation was about to get worse and that she would need to take action, even contradicting her husband. Grave danger loomed as 400 warriors were on the way determined to kill every male in the household of Nabal, Abigail’s husband.Nabal had acted cruelly and insolently and it wasn’t the first time. Nabal was a rich man as far as material wealth, but he had no wealth of character. His name means “senseless” or “stupid” and he was known to be a bully and drunkard. He was widely feared and disliked. It is hard to imagine what Abigail saw in him. Maybe she felt the false security that money can bring, or maybe she thought she could change him. Maybe he had changed since their early dating days, but she had no option to divorce him.He was known for bullying others and this time he insulted the wrong man, the future King David. What do we know about Abigail? Her name means “My Father has made himself joyful” and we read of praise for her discretion as well as her beauty.A young servant wouldn’t think of bringing the issue that they would all be destroyed to Nabal, and instead turned to Abigail for help. Abigail listened, and acted quickly. She prepared a generous gift for David and his men of bread, wine, sheep, roasted grain, cakes of raisins, and cakes of figs. She sent the provisions ahead with some servants and then followed alone. She hid this information from her husband, Nabal. She met David and took responsibility for the problem, realistically acknowledging that her husband was senseless, but asking David to forgive her personally. She begged David not to take an action that would later cause him a troubled conscience.Abigail returned to Nabal to tell him of the gifts she had given David and his men and to assure him that the danger had been averted. But she couldn’t tell him now: he was drunk. She waited until the next day when he had sobered up hoping that he wouldn’t explode in fury or even violence. Instead we learn that Nabal had been struck in the night and his heart was like a stone. With Nabal’s death, Abigail had been relieved of her burden of being Nabal’s wife! When David learned of Nabal’s death, he sent word to Abigail with an invitation of marriage.Abigail helped and supported David along life’s road, and she learned of a husband who valued her and protected her, even rescuing her from a kidnapper. (1 Samuel 30:1-19)I relate to the story of Abigail as I have chosen unwisely in love, looking for material security instead of a life-time partner focused on the Lord. I’ve had to make tough choices of marital disobedience, feeling disloyal but knowing it was the right things to do. I also feel blessed as Abigail has to understand what it is like to have friends who are focused on Jesus and value relationships rather than destroying them with addictions. For the twenty things I like to do, these are in no particular order, but only as they came to mind as I asked myself, “When I have joy or feel happy, what am I doing?”1. Praying2. Reading3. Golf4. Swimming5. Photography6. Travel7. Wine/Dinner with friends8. Writing9. Walking/Exercise10. Bicycling11. Giving Docent Tours at the Frist Art Museum12. Learning Spanish13. Working with young people, post-college14. Worship15. Playing with my dog (I had to put my last dog to sleep in July. My first time being dogless in 25 years. I am planning to remedy that with another dog in the future).16. Playing piano17. Symphony concerts18. Plays and Broadway Musicals19. Listening to music/concerts20. Visiting the Episcopal Monastery in Cambridge, MA: The Society of Saint John the Evangelist I have a lot to be thankful for as a lot of God’s world makes me joyful!I pray that my Camino will add to my joy through rest, walking in the footsteps of pilgrims since 1092, and the anticipation of meeting others who share God’s love.I’ll also be walking to raise money through the United Thank Offering (UTO) for an Anglican Centre to be opened in Santiago. It will be a place of rest, a place of worship where even women can celebrate, and a place where all baptized Christians can participate in Communion. A grant will match donations received through December 2019. More information at this link: https://unitedthankoffering.com/camino/. The most recent newsletter, Summer 2019 is here: https://www.anglicancentresantiago.org/news-along-the-way/. Blessings, my friend,Agatha

Dinner Work. With Lots and Lots of Community Effort. Welcome to a very special Thanksgiving episode! In this season of gratitude, I'm feeling very grateful for so many things, both personal and professional. What better way to celebrate that gratitude than with an event by the community for the community. Farm dinners at Caromont happen twice a year, at the beginning of the season to celebrate new growth, and at the end to celebrate harvest. Ceremonial beginnings and endings. All food is locally sourced and prepared by Food Folks who live and work in this region. They've become so popular I often see the same faces around the table, smiling, sipping wine, and introducing the newbies to the magic that is Caromont Farm. So when cheesemaker Gail Hobbs-Page asked me to record the event I did a happy dance. After listening to the results? I did another. And felt very grateful I captured this moment with sound. This Thanksgiving, as you travel and cook and take deep breaths because your Uncle Raymond said something idiotic, I hope you'll take a moment to be grateful for the things you have, rather than spending time dwelling on the things you want. After experiencing the 3rd Annual Farm Dinner at Caromont once again through audio, I find I have very much indeed. I wish you peace, joy, BIG LOVE, and extra stuffing. Happy Thanksgiving! Speakers you will hear in this episode: Gail Hobbs-Page - Farm Dinner Host and owner of Caromont Farm. Ian Boden - Chef of The Shack in Staunton, Virginia. Corry Blanc - Blacksmith at Blanc Creatives. Vu Nguyen - Of Blanc Creatives. Brian Noyes and Dwight McNeill - Of Red Truck Rural Bakery. This is the 5th and FINAL SEGMENT of our Beer vs. Wine dinner. It was a very long day and things start to unravel slightly. Dino drops coffee science, Andrea loves Natalie Merchant, Richard yells and whispers into the mic, while Jay Rose tries to keep things under some sort of control. Sort of. Not really.
Things start to get slightly sideways in this segment as the long day slowly turns into an interesting night. This segment of our Beer and Wine Dinner features a home made Beet Ravioli with home made ricotta cheese and roasted goat expertly prepared by Chef Todd and Chef Jason. Dino pairs it with a killer Montepulciano and the Craft Beer Planet boys pair it with Schneider Aventinus.
Segment 3 we get into a bacon fat tostada made with the goat freshly off of the spit. Ann Marie sits in from Jorge Ordonez to present the 1964 Faustino, Bernard Johnson from Unibroue sit's in and brings us Unibroue beers that you can only get from Bernard. Crazy stuff. Get in on this!
Segment 2 of our Beer vs Wine Dinner. Richard learns what a "spit" is, Jay Rose and Jared try on their new stylish noose's, Andrea and Dino create a killer wine pairing for the dish.
This is the first segment of our Beer vs Wine Dinner Podcast from Andrea's house in Cherry Hill NJ. Chef Todd Bannan and Chef Jason Clarke prepared a world class dinner for us to pair craft beer and wine with.
Join Jennifer and Sara as they discuss this week's news, announce a new contest winner and listener celebrations, and chat with Heather Macdonald about the Wine Dinner at Flying Fish Cafe and other extra special meals at Walt Disney World.
