Top footballers have been biohacking at Euro 2024 to help give them an edge. A number of players are using breathwork and wearing Oura Rings, others are drinking a concoction known as a 'Fuel Bomb' containing pickle juice, and more are using cryotherapy, blue-blocking glasses, and polyphasic sleep. So what's working best, and what can we learn? On today's show... 1. Oura Rings The Oura Ring has been a game-changer for many players, including Conor Gallagher and Marc Guehi. These rings monitor sleep quality, stress levels, and heart health, providing detailed insights that help players optimize their rest and recovery. By tracking these metrics, players can ensure they are in peak condition for matches, improving overall performance (https://www.englandfootball.com) (Sky Sports). 2. Pickle Juice 'Fuel Bombs' Kieran Trippier was seen drinking pickle juice during a match to combat muscle cramps. Pickle juice is known for its high sodium and vinegar content, which can help stop cramps faster than water alone by triggering a reflex that inhibits cramping. This quick fix not only helps with immediate recovery but also offers additional health benefits such as improved gut health and controlled blood sugar levels (SPORTbible). 3. Cryotherapy Cristiano Ronaldo's use of cryotherapy is well-documented. By exposing his body to extremely low temperatures, Ronaldo reduces inflammation and speeds up muscle recovery. This technique helps him maintain peak performance throughout the season and is a staple in his biohacking regimen (UEFA.com). 4. Blue-Blocking Glasses Erling Haaland, although not playing in Euro 2024, is known for using blue-blocking glasses to improve sleep. These glasses filter out blue light from screens and artificial lighting, which can disrupt melatonin production and sleep patterns. By using these glasses in the evening, athletes can improve their sleep quality, leading to better recovery and performance (Sky Sports) (SPORTbible). 5. Polyphasic Sleep Cristiano Ronaldo also practices polyphasic sleep, taking multiple 90-minute naps throughout the day. This sleep pattern helps him maximize rest and recovery, ensuring he is always at his best for training and matches. Polyphasic sleep can be particularly effective for athletes who need to manage their energy levels and recovery time meticulously (UEFA.com). The People's Countryside Environmental Debate Podcast

Join your co-hosts Stuart 'The Wildman' Mabbutt and William Mankelow as they tackle two thought-provoking questions sent in by listeners in this engaging episode of The People's Countryside Environmental Debate Podcast. Recorded in Stuart's garden, the duo dive into two intriguing queries that challenge perceptions of nature, society, and personal growth. The first question they tackle is an epic one from Debs in Didcot, Oxfordshire, England, which is as follows: “Humans, at the core, are selfish beings, as proved by many of us willingly locking down during the Covid pandemic, because we wanted to protect ourselves, our loved ones, and our communities. Was nature considered in that? Biodiversity is often lost in many societies and cultures. How on earth do we put it back, or insert it afresh? At the Oxfordshire RSPB Otmoor nature reserve, Marsh Harriers bred for the first time four years ago, and I note there is a pub of the same name in Oxford. The RSPB could have purchased everyone in there a drink to celebrate, but they didn't. These opportunities are almost always missed. 5000 road names in Oxfordshire, especially in Bicester and Oxford are named after aspects of nature, why isn't that leveraged to raise awareness? We need to stand in the shoes of nature to really understand the thread. I know of a farmer who stood in the shoes of a dung beetle during an event, and that really helped develop her perspective. We really are a cancer on planet earth, and we really need to add nature's voice to governance. We really need to add more groups including cultural groups to this debate. Yet has anyone asked what aspect of nature these groups care about the most, as a way of understanding how to motivate them to get involved? If a CEO of a business didn't know this about their client base, they would be sacked. When trying to engage a wider demographic, and broaden it out from white middle aged people, should we be trying to attract them to our events, or getting involved with their events?” In response to Debs' question Stuart and William offer a nuanced perspective on human behaviour and our relationship with nature. Stuart observes that the COVID-19 lockdowns demonstrate our tendency to follow rules and conform, at least initially, while William adds that this behaviour also reveals our inherent selfishness. Stuart points out that nature was largely overlooked during this period, highlighting our disconnect from the natural world. This prompts William to question whether selfishness is uniquely human or a trait shared by other species. The second question they dive into in this episode is from Yenifer from which is as follows: “Can we really be whatever we want to be?” In response to Yenifer's question about personal potential, Stuart and William offer a balanced view on individual aspirations and societal constraints. Stuart cynically notes that our choices are limited by societal structures, mentioning the "old boy's network". William agrees but suggests using positive self-talk to shape our identity and goals. It looks at how radio technology has advanced since Marconi conducted some of his early transmissions. The episode includes the first of a two-part feature on operating via the QO-100 geostationary satellite with a look at the hardware and software needed to achieve your first QSO at home or out mobile. Bob, G0FGX reviews the FTM-500D which is the latest mobile transceiver from Yaesu and demonstrates the many advanced features of this versatile FM and digital rig. There is a visit to Sidmouth Amateur Radio Society which secured a derelict former sports social club from the local council and turned it into a community hub and the club's new QTH. Watch this interesting episode and don't miss out on the TX Factor free-to-enter draw with a chance to win three RSGB publications. You can see this and previous episodes on txfactor.co.uk The four-year planning rule has offered a degree of protection for antennas and masts that have been erected without planning permission. Under this rule any installations which had been installed and unchanged for four years or more were protected against planning enforcement action. However, as of the 25th of April 2024, this rule ceased to exist in its current form in England under changes introduced under the Levelling-up and Regeneration Act 2023. The rule has been replaced by a more stringent ten-year period for the exemption from enforcement for residential dwellings. This change does not affect Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland where the four-year rule will continue to apply. Any installation that was substantially completed before the introduction of the Act will still be subject to the four-year rule meaning, for most radio amateurs, the ten-year rule will not apply until the 24th of April 2028. For more information on planning matters visit rsgb.org/planning Bath Based Distance Learning's next Full licence course runs from August to December, with exams in January. There is no charge for the training, but applicants must work through some pre-course material and complete a quiz to be eligible for a place. To request full details, and an application form, please email Bath Based Distance Learning's Team Leader, Steve, G0FUW via g0fuw@bbdl.org.uk A reminder that the RSGB is asking radio amateurs to share their ideas on the theme of ‘change and adapt', as part of plans for British Science Week 2025. The event is run by the British Science Association and celebrates science, technology, engineering and maths. The 2025 theme offers a huge range of opportunities for creativity and discovery. Ideas could cover any area from construction to propagation, from making QSOs under supervision to space and satellites. This is a chance to show young people in schools, or anyone in your local community, just how interesting and enjoyable amateur radio can be. More information is available from the Worked All Britain website. Now the radio propagation report, compiled by G0KYA, G3YLA, and G4BAO on Thursday the 6th of June 2024 It seems that we haven't had a repeat performance of the auroral conditions caused by active sunspot region 3697. For Aurora watchers, that could be a disappointment, but for HF lovers it means the bands have been quite settled. The Kp index has been at 3 and below, while the solar flux index has been consistently above 175 all week. As a result, HF conditions have been quite good with maximum usable frequencies over a 3,000km path being regularly over 21MHz and often 24MHz. It is always a good idea to operate on the highest HF band that is open as absorption decreases the higher you go. Meanwhile, Sporadic-E propagation brought interest to the 10m band with stations from all over Europe being workable for long periods, but more of that in the VHF report. On the 5th of June, a filament located in the northeast quadrant erupted. The event flung a coronal mass ejection into space that doesn't appear to be Earth-directed. But this shows that we are still in the danger zone for major solar events, and anything could happen. Next week, NOAA predicts that the solar flux index will remain around 175, but we expect some geomagnetic disruption today, the 9th of June, with a predicted Kp index of 4. Otherwise, solar conditions are predicted to be calm next week. So, if these conditions continue, this is a good time to make the most of the HF bands. And now the VHF and up propagation news from G3YLA and G4BAO The weather pattern for the coming week is dominated by low pressure, which means there is unlikely to be any significant Tropo to speak of.  There will probably be several opportunities for those on the GHz bands to search for rain scatter. However, these events look to be moving showers or rain bands, which means that you'll need to be pretty agile with the rotator to keep on the scattering target. With the solar conditions continuing to keep the pot simmering it's not impossible that the Kp index could rise high enough to promote an aurora, but it's a low probability. The early part of June is well regarded for minor meteor events and should be worth a look for those using meteor scatter modes. There were several Sporadic-E openings early in the week that finish today, the 9th. Sporadic-E was reported up to the 2m band on a few occasions. Last Sunday, the 2nd, lasted up to three hours on the path from Eastern England down to the Italian peninsula. Events initially get picked up on the 10m band and then move up through the VHF bands of 6m, 4m and finally 2m as the Sporadic-E propagation strengthens. In this peak of the Sporadic-E season, the openings on the lower bands, such as 10 and 6m, can be present for much of the day and certainly quite late into the evening. Follow the weather patterns on the daily Sporadic-E blog on propquest.co.uk and you should be able to point in the right direction for an opening. Multi-hop paths to the Far East or the Americas require a good antenna like a beam, but single-hop European Sporadic-E propagation can be very strong, and any antenna will do the job. Moon declination is at its maximum this weekend for the DUBUS 10 and 24GHz EME contest, but EME path loss is rising. 144MHz sky noise is low all week. And that's all from the propagation team this week.

Joy Gregory (b. 1959. Bicester, UK). Born in the UK to Jamaican parents, Joy Gregory's work explores the impact of colonialism on global perceptions of beauty, memory, botany, health and traditional knowledge. As a photographer, Gregory has worked over decades in various media, including video, digital and analogue photography, film installation, Victorian print processes and more recently textiles; exploring photography as technology and as mode of artistic expression. She is interested in understanding how individuals and communities remember and interpret their history, particularly in relation to their connection to the land.Joy & Lou discuss the themes of process and practice as they have developed throughout the artist's four decade career. In June, Art on the Underground will unveil a new series of Joy's artworks at Heathrow Terminal 4 Underground station - envisaging Heathrow as a portal of entry and exit. I spoke with Joy in February, as she embarked on her partnership with Hillingdon-based charity Refugees in Effective and Active Partnership (REAP) facilitating a series of photographic workshops with asylum seekers living in hotels in the Heathrow area, as well as a community group for Afghan women in Hayes and Harlington. These workshops will inform the creation of her artwork for Heathrow Terminal 4, giving space to the stories of newly arrived Londoners, displaced people whose realities are increasingly maligned and misrepresented. The work will offer an indelible trace of the cultures, languages and hopes which coalesce in London. In the Autumn of 2025, Whitechapel Gallery will stage Joy's first monographic exhibition, surveying a four-decade practice. Thanks for listening to this independent podcast. Season 5, Episode 184: Sustainable Standstill: Why major housebuilders aren't going green This episode we interview Ian Pritchett, the co-founder of Greencore Homes in Oxfordshire. They build airtight, energy-efficient, timber frame houses, from their factory in Bicester. Ian shines a spotlight on the challenges of the ‘business-as-usual' housebuilding planning system and champions the need for a new national planning policy that is fit for the future. The problem· Charlie asked Ian what the planning system is doing to respond to climate change challenges and pressures around development.· Ian is frustrated at the planning system. Trying to do something different and better is a challenge. It gets closer scrutiny and there is more bureaucracy.· National Government and housebuilders are focused on volume, not sustainability. They are more interested in avoiding a housing crisis, than a climate crisis.Environmental impact· Ian reports that every time a new house is built it generates over one hundred tons of carbon emissions (CO2), plus the use of the house will emit carbon. The total carbon budget for Oxfordshire's five local authorities is 26.3m tonnes of CO2 by 2050. With their plan to build 100,000 new homes in the next 10 years, they will use between 80-100% of that budget on new housing alone.· Sustainability regulations are dumbed down to keep volumes up. It is a choice between the quantity or the quality of housing. Ian explains that we can have both.· Charlie asks Ian if we can build our way out of a housing crisis and why does volume win Government votes.· Ian explains that we are living longer, there are smaller households and spare housing is not where employment is concentrated, hence why the Southeast is the focus of housebuilding.A planning system fit for our future· Ian wants a new national planning policy that is fit for the future and focuses on more important areas such as energy, carbon, wildlife, biodiversity, and community.· Greencore's mission is to move the house building industry from an unsustainable to sustainable model answering questions such as can you lock up more carbon than you emit? Can you generate more energy than you use? Can you improve wildlife and biodiversity? · Ian talks about how Greencore works to the One Planet Living framework. It is building places where people want to live and can live sustainably, can live happily and healthily.· Charlie and Ian discuss the issue of landowner wealth and a need to involve the local community to ensure they benefit. Are greener houses more expensive? · Will talks about how Cardiff University proved that an environmentally friendly home could be more affordable than a normal home.· Ian reports that there are some higher costs when building sustainably at a smaller scale. However, these costs will come down when building at volume.· Charlie offers an example of one of his affordable housing projects and how lower running costs could be included in rent and mortgage agreements.· Ian talks about the idea of houses built to encourage zero energy bills and the problems with this not being valued by residents. The problem with parking space· Ian is concerned about housing schemes being dominated by parking and car ownership. He sees a future where we make more use of shared sustainable transport and offer examples of where this is happening. Decisions also need to be made around green space vs car parking space.· Charlie and Will discuss the pros and cons of electric car sharing in housing projects. How to innovate faster· Ian talks about how economics will drive innovation in this space faster. One way is to reduce stamp duty on low-carbon homes which would drive demand, supply, and legislation.· Will and Charlie discuss getting a better mortgage for a low-carbon home, and Charlie uses the...

Official Website: https://www.lawabidingbiker.com In this episode, Lurch and I discuss our plans to expand Law Abiding Biker in 2023.  I started Law Abiding Biker in the Spring of 2013.  It began as a podcast followed by a YouTube Channel.  After a couple of years, I realized I would need to monetize Law Abiding Biker if I wanted to keep it going.  So, in 2015 I started a modest online store and our first product was our beloved Biker Gripper.  The Biker Gripper remains one of our best sellers to date.  The "store" was in my garage and my family helped me pack and ship.  It didn't take too long for us to figure out this was overwhelming for my family. SUPPORT US AND SHOP IN THE OFFICIAL LAW ABIDING BIKER STORE About the time we figured out it was too much for us, Rick "Big Daddy" Kane came to me with a proposal to become the store manager and add more products to the store.  The "store" was moved to Big Daddy's garage.  He brought on many products and the store began to flourish.  Unfortunately, in 2017 Big Daddy's garage and house caught on fire and the store was a total loss.  Thank God Big Daddy was able to get out of the house and he was unharmed.  We started over from the ground up and moved into a storage unit.  In 2019, we found a commercial space in Richland, WA.   CHECK OUT OUR HUNDREDS OF FREE HELPFUL VIDEOS ON OUR YOUTUBE CHANNEL AND SUBSCRIBE! The idea has always been to move the store to the Yakima area when Big Daddy retired from his Law Enforcement job.  He let us know last fall that he was retiring in 2023.  So, Lurch and I started looking for a store.  We had quite the adventure of finding something that would suit us.  In January of 2023, we found a building in Union Gap, WA, and purchased it.  The building is located between Lurch and me, and it is accessed easily from the Interstate.   The plan is to move the store to our new location in July 2023! FOLLOW UP: PORSCHE TAKEOVER CASE DISMISSEDA court in Germany has dismissed the claims for compensation by hedge funds, relating to the failed attempt by Porsche to takeover VW, which resulted in them then being taken over by Porsche. The judge decided there was no merit, whatsoever, whilst the plaintiffs have already appealed and asked for certain judges to be excluded. After a couple of failed attempts in buying out or taking a stake in Aston Martin, they finally managed it by purchasing 7.6% shares in the UK firm. GOVERNMENT ROAD INCIDENT STATS OUTThe 2021 road incident statistics have been released by the UK Government and in some places make grim reading. A positive is that cycling fatalities has dropped 21%, which we guess is due to a combination of people remembering how to drive again and cyclists getting used to the roads. The bad news is that road fatalities has risen 7%, with an astonishing 30% relating to not wearing a seatbelt. Click this Autocar link here for more information. NEW CITROËN LOGOCitroën has updated their logo, harking back to the original, with the font an evolution on the previous version. As with all the current updates to logos, this is aimed at making their use and options of what you can do with them, much easier in this digital age. FCA WARNS INSURANCE INDUSTRY TO PROTECT CONSUMERSThe Financial Conduct Authority has warned the insurance industry to help consumers, in the current cost of living crisis, and not foist unnecessary products on them. The FCA also reminded them it expects them to help those struggling to pay, so that they do not expose themselves by not having adequate protection. Click here for the AM Online link to learn more. CHINESE EV SALES RISE SHARPLY ACROSS EUROPETying back to last week's Lunchtime Read which mentioned how the Chinese Government effectively subsidises their EV companies so they can sell their vehicles cheaper than other companies can, figures were released showing how well that tactic is doing. Just behind and catching rapidly, the German produced percentage is the Chinese. This link, to the AM Online article, will tell you more. WESTMINSTER COUNCIL INSTALLING LAMPPOST EV CHARGERSWestminster Council has engaged Siemens to install 500 lamppost EV chargers by March 2023, this will take the number of chargers in the area up to 2000. NEW FOUR-WHEELED ESCOOTERThe Dragonfly Hyperscooter, is a four-wheeled escooter that comes in two guises, urban and more rugged off-road versions. They are great looking things, but obviously until escooters are legalised, we won't see them in public. However, such a design should open up the market to those who are reticent to go on two-wheels or are unable to for whatever reason. Click this Move Electric link to learn more. He was 22 years old and one day when he achieved this. He has been incredibly good this year, only with a wobble in the two previous events in Belgium and Greece. This has bene year to forget for M-Sport and one Hyundai will wish to put behind themselves too, after all the unedifying infighting. NEW NEW CAR NEWSCitroën Oli -Citroën has revealed their design concept, the Oli, which is an investigation into sustainability and affordability. One of the key criteria is lightness, which has driven most of the design choices. The relatively small electric motor is good for around 247 miles, thanks to decisions on constraining the acceleration and top speed. We are big fans of clever stuff and this is very much in that bracket. Click the Autocar link here to read more. The Zem - A team of students from TU Eindhoven has produced a concept coupe that not only is sustainable but actually deploys technology that helps to clean up the air, by removing CO2. Admittedly, this one car removes two kilos of CO2 per 20,000 miles, but as an idea it is very clever. As with the Oli, we like this due to thinking around a problem and trying to produce a solution. To read the Autocar story, click this link. Maserati Granturismo Folgore - Maserati has announced details of the new Granturismo, which includes an EV to go alongside the V6 in their range. This is aiming squarely at the Porsche Taycan and Audi e-tron GT. Fitted with a 93kWh battery, delivering 560kW and 997 lb ft of torque. Obviously this equates a stupidly quick 0-62mph speed and also a range up to 280 miles. Prices are yet to be released. For more, click the Move Electric story here. The impact of reality on the psychoanalytical treatment and on the work of renunciation of the patient and the analyst. Which realities are involved in the cure? In this episode Bernard Chervet talks about the impact of reality on psychoanalytic treatment. In light of recent contexts of the global pandemic and upheavals it has caused, Bernard Chervet offers us a theoretical exploration of different notions of reality which confront the analyst. By redefining the terms intrusion, irruption and break-in, and by showing the correlation between internal and external realities, he explains how a traumatic external reality bursting into the treatment re-enacts infantile sexuality from childhood when the difference between the sexes was discovered. He shows us how the analyst, guardian of psychic life, must take all these realities into account in his work with his patients. The analyst must respect and even favour a time of immobilisation and temporary denial linked to a shock without losing sight of resuming the analytical process in a second phase in order to achieve a regeneration of the libido, the very objective of dream work and session work.   Bernard Chervet is a French psychiatrist and psychoanalyst. He lives and works in Paris and Lyon. He is a training psychoanalyst of the Psychoanalytic Society of Paris (SPP), he was a Former President of the SPP. He is a representative on the IPA Board and on the IPA Executive Committee. He is Scientific Director of the Congress of French speaking Psychoanalysts (CPLF), Founder of SPP Editions and he has authored numerous publications in French and international journals. He was the winner of the french Maurice Bouvet Prize in 2018 for his complete works. As the key-note speaker at the CPLF on the theme "Après-coup", he is the author of “Après-coup in Psychoanalysis: The Fulfilment of Desire and Thought” (to be published in 2022 by Routledge). Finally, he is also contributor to the IPA encyclopedic dictionary.
