'Anything said with absolute confidence and in absolute terms is normally nonsense,' says Oscar Dodd, about Fortnum & Mason's wine and spirits buyer, when it comes to discussing the oft-trotted out truisms about wine, beer and spirits that you often hear. But not everything you hear is so wide of the mark. 'They say that the English drink their red wine too old and too warm, and their white wine too young and too cold,' he adds. 'That is certainly true.'Listen to Country Life podcast on Apple PodcastsListen to Country Life podcast on SpotifyListen to Country Life podcast on AudibleOscar has spent over two decades in the wine and spirits trade, starting out by eschewing university in order to stack shelves in his local Oddbins, falling in love with wine within a matter of weeks. He's since gone on to forge a fascinating career, taking in everything from obscure vineyards that play Mozart to their grapes to help them grow, to walking the streets of New York City persuading people to drink more absinthe. These days, he's found in the more rarefied atmosphere of central London, at Fortnum & Mason, the world's most famous food and drink seller.Oscar talks to James Fisher about his career, his pet hates, why you really shouldn't be saving that bottle of champagne you have under the stairs, and the amazing discoveries in the world of drink that are changing the industry — including Fortnums' alchoholic sparkling tea. Then, of course, he shares his tips on the best tipples to buy for the Christmas period, from whisky, wine and liqueurs to the indispensable seasonal bottle of sherry.Episode creditsHost: James FisherGuest: Oscar DoddProducer and editor: Toby KeelMusic: JuliusH via Pixabay Hosted on Acast. The moment nobody was hoping for, and perhaps feared most of all...this winter, only on a hosting site near you comes a podcast so irrelevant that almost nobody has noticed its existence. Fergus and Lee are finally reunited and continue their efforts to provide a stream of wine related nonsense.   It's been some time since our valiant cohosts recorded together, mainly as Ferg was so exhausted after their last episode he had to take a break. He did so through the medium of winemaking. Lee just faffed about and contributed nothing. Yes, he's lazy like the yeast. In a triumphant return to TM&TM HQ, Fergus talks us through the facts, stats, and numbers of his 2023 vintage and we attempt to explore how this year looks, and how it may compare to other vintages. Do you like numbers? Do you like nonsense? Then you're going to love this.   We also send a hearty thanks to Mr Mike Boyne for stepping up to the plate on our last episode in a substantial way, as well as issuing a formal apology to our dear listener. Lee pays a small tribute to Oddbins and we look ahead to the coming weeks.   Thanks for sticking with us despite the radio silence and our babblings.   TM&TM: Das Ist Nummerwang, available to lodpod from wherever you cod your pasts this Thursday. May whatever you deity you believe in have mercy on us all.

We have a TM&TM Super Magnificent Incredible Special for you. Due to our powerful connections (by which we means Ferg's phone book) we have managed to convince wine writer extraordinaire Henry Jeffreys to join us.    From his days in the wine trade drinking top notch Rioja with Oddbins to becoming a fully fleded wine writer via the medium of publishing, we uncover a little of Herny's back story. We then dive deep into his wonderful new book Vines In A Cold Climate (available from all good digital and analogue book retailers). From its inception, concept changes, to final tome, Henry shares with us his English wine journey.   Covering American founders, Sussex's Caesar, and Norfolk priests, this book has it all (even Tibetan bowls). We also try to uncover who is the English winemaker most likely to win a fight.   During our recording, Fergus's headphones and mic were so overwhelmed by Henry's presence that they stopped working. Hence Ferg's silence for a chunk of the interview. This also explains why Herny starts talking about cars seemingly apropos of nothing.   A fabulous book based around the personalities involved in pioneering English wine, this is an absolute must for your home library. With huge thanks to Henry for giving up his valuable time to talk to a pair of numpties.   Give this one a listen; it's a real cracker.

episode 118 premieres this morning with all the fanfare you'd associate with a a carefully crafted non-apology / apology composed by the crisis management team of Muffy and Missy McGlugglug  -  offspring of the late music industry public relations legend Drinky McGlugglug killed in 2009 during a hostage situation at OddBins (after 2 hours in captivity, Drinky heroically sought to mediate the dispute, only to be later mauled to death by a bomb-sniffing dog who'd mistaken him for a urine-soaked grenade).  Alright, maybe that's more fanfare than I'd initially planned, but I'm fairly confident this week's show more than justifies the effort, if not the expense.

Because this one is all about Fake Booze: a bitter, twisted, dark and damp website stuffed full of satire lampooning the world of wine and drinks, whose strapline is, 'Like truth, but better'. It's the brainchild of hitherto respectable drinks journalist Chris Losh and it's painfully funny, so we wanted to get Chris on the show to bring us bang up to date with the very latest headlines, breaking news and absurd sideswipes at the world of booze. And to have a bit of a laugh. The episode features everything from James Bond to human sacrifice via hobbits, Ginfandel, dinosaurs, hungover graduates and Sea-vignon Blanc. We definitely come in for a bit of a pasting too. On top of all that, we manage to be serious for a moment and recommend a FANTASTIC value Sicilian red. Enjoy the show!
