Well, hey there! Welcome to the latest episode of The Burt (Not Ernie) Show. I'm Jan, and if we have never met in real life or on the interwebs, it's so nice to “meet” you! Let's take a look at some promises God offers His people in the book of Jeremiah. Episode #181 is sponsored by JoannaWeaverBooks.com How can I pray for you? You're listening to The Burt (Not Ernie) Show, part of the Spark Network, now playing in the Edifi app. Today's episode is sponsored by the author and speaker Joanna Weaver. You may know her from the bestseller Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World. Her words resonate with so many Christian women, and I am currently working through her book Lazarus Awakening. Thanks, Joanna, for writing what I've needed to hear so many times. I'll share a link to Joanna Weaver's website here in the show notes. This is episode number 181. Jeremiah. The weeping prophet. His calling from the Lord was far from easy. In fact, it was downright brutal in many aspects. This is a man who lived a rough life for all the years he walked in obedience to God. And so, we can take comfort in his words when we feel like things go from bad to worse when we do what God told us to do. And in the midst of so much hardship, we find some amazing promises in the book of Jeremiah. Jeremiah 17, verses 7 and 8 from the NLT say this: But blessed are those who trust in the LORD and have made the LORD their hope and confidence. They are like trees planted along a riverbank, with roots that reach deep into the water. Such trees are not bothered by the heat or worried by long months of drought. Their leaves stay green, and they never stop producing fruit. Isn't this passage remarkable? It reminds me very much of Psalm 1. The promise here for you is that you will be blessed so long as you trust in the Lord and make Him your hope and confidence. Listen, the honest truth is that we can feel like we're trusting Him but when pressed a bit regarding whether or not any and all of our confidence is in the Lord alone, well, hmmm… it's not always placed fully there, is it? And it needs to be. There is nobody that will fail to let you down save One, and His name is the Lord. So put your hope in Him, put all your confidence in Him, and you will be blessed. That's the promise here, and God never fails to do what He has promised. You will be like a tree planted along a riverbank, your roots are gonna go deep into the water and you will not have to feel barren and dry and fruitless and useless and pointless even when the whole world around you is in a season of drought. Your leaves will stay green and you will never stop producing fruit. Does that describe you right now? You know, one of the best ways to examine your life, to examine yourself to see if ye be in the faith, as Paul said in 2 Corinthians 13:5, is to take a look at your life's fruit, or lack thereof. If you have no fruit, meaning the kind of stuff that marks you as a Christian, that is different than the ways of the world, that is evidence that Jesus has hold of your heart and is doing a sanctifying, transforming work in you and through you…that kind of fruit, well if it isn't evident in your life, then I'm going to be bold enough to say that you may not be planted firmly in the Lord, may not be fully trusting in Him alone. And if you're not, can I encourage you to change that today? Walking with Jesus is not about saying a prayer one time during an emotional moment at the end of a three day conference. Climate controlled settings with emotional speakers and worship can be awesome, there is not doubt, but they don't always equate to the kind of transformative life change that Jesus is really after in the lives of each of His disciples. If we are going to see the kind of fruit that points to us belonging to Him, we need to make a decision to take up our cross daily and follow Him, and that goes far beyond the women's event and stretches into every nook and cranny of our life. Jeremiah 33:3 is another verse I'd like to share with you today, and I actually mentioned this verse on episode number 33 of my other podcast, The Prayer Podcast with Jan L. Burt and I can drop a link to that episode in the show notes for you to easily listen to if you're interested. Let me read it from the NLT. I'll start in verse 2 and then read verse 3: This is what the LORD says - the LORD who made the earth, who formed and established it, whose name is the LORD. Ask Me and I will tell you remarkable secrets you do not know about things to come. Yeah, that right there is a big deal. It's a huge promise. Ask Him, call to Him some versions say, and ask Him things you don't know. Ask Him and He will tell you secrets that are remarkable about what? About things you don't know, about things to come. This tells us that we aren't on our own, we don't have to figure it all out by our own selves, and beyond that, we can ask Him to tell us secret things about what is to come and He will do it. Isn't that amazing? Like, how is that even possible, that we can ask and God will tell us things like that? Oh it's amazing all right, and God means what He promises here. We aren't walking into an unknown, uncertain future in the same manner as those who don't follow Jesus…and this verse gives us tremendous hope and comfort that God will show us things, remarkable things, secret things, if we will but ask Him. Our future is not unknown - it is safe in the hands of the God who knows us and we can keep expecting Him to show us things about the future if we will just ask. Yup, this is an awesome promise! The last verse we will look at in Jeremiah is from chapter 10, verse 23, still reading from the NLT. This section of chapter ten has the header “Jeremiah's Prayer” and verse 23 says: I know, LORD, that our lives are not our own. We are not able to plan our own course. And verse 24 says: So correct me, LORD, but please be gentle. Do not correct me in anger, for I would die. I love this. To begin a prayer by saying that we know our lives are not our own, that we are not able to plan our own course, is a huge admission that we all need to make! God already knows this is true; we need to know it! And as a Christian woman in America in 2024, it's not common to our western culture, this kind of admittance. We DON'T know that our lives are not our own. We really have been taught to drink the Kool-Aid and believe the untruth that we can plan our own course. Actually, according to the very Word of God, we cannot! The promise here for you and for me is that this acknowledging brings with it so much comfort and peace, because we put our lives where they belong…in His hands. Honestly, we don't want them anywhere else. And Jeremiah goes on to pray, so correct me Lord, but please be gentle. If God corrected us, dealt with us in His anger, none of us would be alive. Instant death. Poof. That's it. Time to punch out. But of course, our loving God in His grace and mercy doesn't deal with us in His anger! He gentleness is known to all, if we take the time to notice it. But in praying these words, asking God to move in our lives, to do His sanctifying work, which does at times, often times for me, involve correction, is a really amazing way to ask God to do His will, but in a way that is gentle. He does remember that we are but dust, it says in Psalm 103, and in His gentleness toward us, we see evidence of how much He loves us. Take comfort in this! God's love and care for you knows no bounds, and He will finish the work He has begun in your life. I hope these verses from Jeremiah have been encouraging for you today, and if so, well, praise the Lord! Lord bless you and thanks for listening today - also, I'm leaving a link in the show notes where you can send me any prayer requests you may have, and I pray for every request I receive. I'll see you next time! Bye bye.
Do you often feel like you are dropping all the spinning plates? That you can't keep up or believe the lie that you are the worst mom and wife? Do you wonder why you are not further along, why does everyone else seem to have it together? Today Joanna Weaver- author, speaker, and podcaster- joins me to discuss her new book Embracing Trust. We also spent time talking about her classic Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World and how that message has stayed applicable through the years. We want to worship at the feet of Jesus like Mary but the Martha in us keeps bossing us around, telling us to work harder and strive more. Joanna reminds us that if we tend our connection with the Lord everything else flows out of that place. The tasks and needs do not disappear but the ability to tackle them with grace, tranquility, and truth increases as we spend time at the feet of Jesus. Your Hope-Filled Perspective with Dr. Michelle Bengtson podcast
Episode Summary: Bad things happen. People wound us. Friends let us down. Trust issues with people can become trust issues with God. Scripture tells us to trust the Lord with all our heart. But how do we do that? My guest, Joanna Weaver, invites you to trust in the Lord with all your heart. Relinquishing control and putting your hope in a forever-faithful Father--that's the beautiful secret of unshakeable faith. Quotables from the episode: Trusting God is the key to a victorious Christian life As you let go in surrender, God will enable you to hold on in faith so that you're no longer dominated by fear and doubt. As we embrace trust, we embrace God—and it leaves us forever changed. We must learn to believe in God's love, goodness, and power despite the difficulties we face. We must stop chasing blessings and embrace contentment. Pray God-sized prayers so that He can be revealed in God-sized answers. In a very real sense, trust is God's love language. Nothing brings Him more joy than when we put our hope and trust fully in Him. Scripture References: Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Happy New Year! Do you have a vision for 2022? I know God has a vision for you. Maybe He's dropped something into your spirit that seems overwhelming or impossible. We can learn a lot from Mary on how to respond when God calls you to something new.Luke 1:26-38 records the conversation between Mary and the angel Gabriel. I don't know about you, but I want to have the same heart towards my calling as Mary. She was open to hear from God. She was quick to ask questions when she didn't understand. She listened to what God had to say. She surrendered her plans so she she could surrender to His. She submitted to His calling even when it seemed huge and didn't make sense. She trusted that God knew what He was doing and went with it.And of course, because of Mary's heart, she became part of the greatest rescue story the world will ever know.God is no different today. Isn't it just like the Lord to teach or remind us of a timeless lesson when we least expect it? That is exactly what He did several weeks ago, and in all honesty, it was just what I needed to hear. If you know me at all, you know I am not given the hustle message so often heard in our world. I don't think it's biblical. Yet, just like anyone else, I need to step back and reevaluate how I'm spending my time and make adjustments. I hope this week's episode encourages you to exchange hustle for choosing a heart posture that feeds your soul. You can learn more about Susan and her ministry, She Rises, at www.sherisesmn.org and find her on Facebook and Instagram at Susan Vandeheuvel.
Are you caught up in life's timeless schedule? Flesh worrying about daily agendas, but your heart wanting to sit with the Lord. Well, let me tell you about two of the many extraordinary women in the Bible. Mary and Martha. Mary pushing aside the busy callings of the world and sitting at the Lord's feet. Whereas Martha, still with the intention to serve the Lord, gets caught up with the daily duties of the world. I think you and I can resonate more with Martha. How do we grow and strengthen our devotion for the Lord when there's just so much to do? Well in today's episode we look at what the Lord says about our priorities. How to have a heart that desires and longs for Jesus, all while living in a world that asks so much of us.
In this message, we discover Mary and the three essential principles we see modeled through her life: to love God, listen to Him, and learn from Him. Hear how you can follow her example in new ways.

“A space of grace to become everything God wants us to be.” Aren't those beautiful words? My very special guest on this episode, best-selling author and international speaker, Joanna Weaver is here to encourage us to live in that space of grace. We are not talking about adding another “have-to” to your to-do list. This is not something we can do on our own. We cannot make ourselves become all God wants us to be. Our job is to just be! He will do the great work which can only be accomplished through time spent with our Father, the Lover of our souls. Listen as Joanna shares her personal story of God bringing her to the end of herself and challenging her to “have a Mary heart in a Martha world.” Her wisdom, her kindness and her joyful spirit are sure to soothe your soul and to inspire you to step into your own space of grace to become all God wants you to be. Welcome to Episode Six of 'On the Fringe.'In today's podcast, we are immersed in the rich world of 'The Remarkable Realisation of Ricky's Modern Life' by Erica Brennan. Then we listen to Mary Rapp's new song (under pseudonym MaryHeart) 'Different Kinda' and Tiera Boo throws some rapid-fire questions at this remarkable musician, multi-instrumentalist, and academic. Erica Brennan is a Sydney based writer, director, and physical theatre performer. She is a founding member and lead devising artist for physical theatre ensemble NINEFOLD and one of our beloved Sydney Fringe Festival Team members. Read by Erica, 'The Remarkable Realisation of Ricky's Modern Life' is a made for Audio monologue that evokes questions of personal accountability and maternal instinct, set within a strange dream world. Later in the episode, we learn how Mary Rapp started her life in Music, how she approaches songwriting, why she created the Mary Heart persona for her Rhythm and Blues inspired band of the same name, the benefits of separating the different parts of her practices, and she shares some candid feelings about the Sydney Music scene. We also receive an introduction to traditional Korean Pansori singing, which informs Mary's doctoral thesis. On The Fringe is made possible by The City of Sydney and Project Partner Aeona.
In this episode, Charley dives deep into the brain of Oliver Mol as they discuss the genesis of his work Trainlord, how Sydney Review of Books helped him to write again, how he came to perform the Trainlord piece to a live audience and the lasting effect of his 10-month long migraine.Capping off the episode is the unique voice of Mary Heart, with the world premiere of her upcoming release, Cross the Line.On The Fringe is developed with the support of The City of Sydney and Project Partner Aeona.
There are those times that we just feel so distracted, stressed out, and overwhelmed. You feel like, "How in the world am I going to get to it all done?" Then you ultimately just feel like you failed. Today, we're going to look at two sisters: Mary and Martha. One of them, Mary, is worshipping at the feet of Jesus, and one of them, Martha, is serving. Jesus says in the Bible that Mary has done the better thing. But he's not saying that Martha hasn't done a good thing because they're both doing two sides to ministry. It takes both to be effective for God.
We conclude this decision-making series by walking through how to discern our voice from God’s voice and our enemy’s voice. Because -- if you’re anything like me -- you pray, believe you hear an answer and then wonder, “Was that God or me?” So if you’ve ever asked yourself, “Did I hear God right?” Or “Maybe that was just my will sneaking in as God’s voice.” Or “How can I know???!?” This podcast episode is for you. So in the next 20 minutes, we’re going to break down: What God speaks How He speaks What methods He uses How you feel after being spoken to What’s going on when you doubt. So what does God say? God always speaks the truth. He is incapable of lying. And what He says is always consistent with His Word. God-in-your-ear will never contradict God-in-His-Word. His words of truth are based on love, care, and concern for you. The big takeaway here is: God speaks truth. Your enemy speaks lies. But it’s not just the content that’s important. How God speaks is just as important as what He says. When God speaks, He speaks to you as a good Father would: with authority, kindness, grace, and hope. He reminds you who you are in Him. His voice is calm and steady. He never rushes you. He is persistent in His pursuit of you knowing Him. Your enemy sounds condemning. He’s loud, urgent, and noisy. He loves to make you hurry. He calls you names or at least gives you labels like “bad mom” or “lazy” or “not good enough.” The big takeaway here is: God’s tone is firm, gentle and kind. The enemy’s tone is hurry, hustle, and hatred. So what methods does God use to speak to you? A better question may be: What will He NOT use to talk to you? God will speak to you in a way that He knows you will hear. He speaks to you as the individual you are, in a way you know you can hear and understand. He is persistent so if you don’t hear Him the first time, He won’t stop trying to get through to you. God wants you to hear Him, and He won’t give up on you because you are His girl. Your enemy seems to weasel his way into every conversation or thought or plan. Yet, your enemy is not omniscient or omnipresent like your God. The big takeaway here is: God will use whatever method you need to hear and understand and He won’t stop until you get it. Your enemy is also persistent, but not all that powerful. When God speaks to you, you feel like you’re being led. You feel loved and known. You feel confident. You feel a desire for holiness and not despair. You feel a sense of wonder and awe. Sometimes you just know in your knower. Sometimes the peace you feel is so unmistakable there’s no other option, choice, or discussion. It just feels sure and right. But when our enemy talks to us, we feel discouraged. We lack peace. We feel guilty and sometimes just comfortable. The big takeaway here is: When God talks to us we feel sure and steadfast. When our enemy talks, we feel hurried and hassled. So friends, even as we know this, we wonder: But did I really hear God’s voice? As women who love Jesus, we never want to label our own desires, plans, hopes, and dreams as “God’s voice.” But is it really God’s voice we doubt or is it His character we call into question? Remember God: Wants you to pursue Him, not chase suffering Is a Father and has a father’s heart Can do the impossible, that He finds nothing hard. But so often, God answers our questions about what to do with a question of His own: What do you want? Friend, you want to make the right choices and to obey God’s voice without mistaking it for your own. Give yourself grace as you make decisions. Grace to ask hard questions. Grace to make the space to listen. Grace to not hear because the time isn’t right for God to share. Grace to hear, be nervous, but obey anyway. Grace to know that your God wants to talk with you, that He doesn’t want you to miss out, and that He’ll keep talking to you until you get it. Key Quotes Perhaps the very thing we want is the very thing He planted in us to come out of us to shine His light around us. Yes, there is suffering in following Christ, but we are not chasing suffering. We are chasing Jesus. God wants you to hear Him, and He won’t give up on you because you are His girl. God-in-your-ear will never contradict God-in-His-Word. 10 Books to Help You Discern the Voice of God The FCC requires that I tell you that I'm an Amazon Affiliate, which means I earn a bit of commission on each sale. Listening to the teaching of Jesus is the most important component in discipleship because it determines how you serve. (Luke 10:38-42)
Have you ever struggled with having to do tasks while others just sit back and enjoy themselves? Then take heart with this message about having the heart of Mary and the hands of Martha. God calls us to be a disciple. The great thing is that God doesn't call perfect people, he calls the everyday ordinary people. Have you ever thought about what that truly means to be called a disciple of Jesus? The preaching series "The Call To Be A Disciple" focuses upon how following Jesus changed the lives of the disciples and changes our lives as well. Joanne brings the fifth message in this preaching series looking at the Disciples in the New Testament. This week the focus is upon Mary and Martha and what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. This message is based upon the book "Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World" by Joanna Weaver.

I'm re-sharing a previous episode I need to re-listen to this time of year. I'm praying it will be an encouragement to you today. We are already nearing Christmas Eve and plans that I had to bake or buy or clean haven’t all been finished. There are gifts I wanted to purchase or send that didn’t happen. There are cookies I wanted to bake that I didn’t get too and areas I wanted to tidy at home that I didn’t even get close to doing. But I want to share with you today reminders that I’m talking to myself about what I am choosing. I’m hoping to help us keep our focus on the main thing this Christmas season. You can read the full podcast here, but my hope is you will sit with me for just a few minutes of your day and listen in to the podcast and let me pour into you a bit. Every Christmas season I look forward to reading the account of the birth of Christ in Luke together as a family on Christmas morning. I'm amazed at Mary's faith. What must have gone through her mind when Gabriel approached her? How did she process the news that she and Joseph were to raise the Son of God? What depths of sorrow did she endure while watching her Son die a horrific death on a cross? There are many lessons we can learn from Mary’s life, but I want to share just ten today. Show Notes: 1. Mary knew God's Word. (Luke 1:54-55) 2. Mary was filled with the Spirit. (Luke 1:35) 3. Mary said "yes" to God's plan for her life. (Luke 1:38) 4. Mary was quiet before the Lord and meditated on all He had done in her life. (Luke 2:19, Luke 2:51) 5. Mary turned to Jesus for help when she had a problem to be solved. (John 2:3-5) 6. Mary was a woman of worship.(Luke 1:46-47) 7. Mary trusted in the Lord and waited on the His timing. (Matthew 1:19-20) 8. Mary was a chosen vessel of the Lord. (Luke 1:30-31) 9. Mary was a faithful servant. (John 19:25) 10. Mary knew Jesus was dying on the cross for her sins. Many times in my walk as a believer I have heard and read the term "abide in Christ" and didn't have a full understanding of what that meant. I know abide means to remain in, and I pictured it as a state of resting in Christ. Studying through John 15 has been a help to me in grasping fully what our Lord meant as he walked and talked with His disciples on the way to the Garden of Gethsemane. Picture this; our Lord had just left the Upper Room in John 13 & 14 where He and the disciples shared a Passover meal together. During their time together in the Upper Room Jesus washed the disciple's feet and He dismissed Judas who would betray him (John 13). Now in John 15, they are headed in the darkness of the night to the Garden of Gethsemane. Jesus's timing in giving this teaching to his disciples was needed as they were going to face hard times ahead and this lesson is relevant to us today as we meet difficult days. So let's learn together what it looks like to abide in Christ, be a real disciple and bear fruit for our Lord. I'm working through John 15:1-11 today. It’s not the gingerbread houses or cookies or special meals that will have the most impact on your family. It is the attitude of your heart. It is them seeing the Gospel lived out in your day to day life – even in the midst of busy seasons. As the busy Christmas season is upon us we can find ourselves all wrapped up (literally wrapping too) in planning, cooking, cleaning, shopping, decorating, ministry activities and a multitude of other tasks that seem to come about during the Christmas season in addition to just the normal activities of life that we are dealing with. I can lose focus and need to continue to pray to the Lord to remind me to have the heart of Mary and not get caught up with the attitude of Martha in all that needs to be done. I’m a very task focused person, and it’s how my mind works so I need to be intentional and prayerful to not miss the wonder of the Christmas season. The Christmas season can be a time – a reminder to us to refocus - to again to think deeply about the realities of who Jesus is and what He has done for us. On this week’s episode of the Adorned Podcast we thought it would be fun to recap our time at family camp in Colorado. It was such a sweet week with our husbands, our kiddos, and our church family. The Lord used that week to really work in both of our hearts and we are so excited to share a part of that with you. Quotes: “We want these big moments, but what it takes is step after step after step to get to the mountaintop. The Lord is faithful and you will have those moments, but He wants to meet us in the step by step, not just on the mountaintop.” “It’s ok and good to sit and be still and rest in The Lord.” “It was a sweet reminder of The Lord saying when the world around you is going crazy and everyone is saying you should volunteer for everything, it’s ok to just rest in me.” Resources: Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World by Joanna Weaver *The beautiful music heard on today’s episode is by Katie Cobbs*

Thank you for spending your time with me today - I am blessed by each one of you. Thank you for your prayers, for your sweet notes of encouragement to me and for supporting this little ministry here at Thankful Homemaker by listening in to this podcast. I’ll be taking a break for the next week to enjoy family time. I will see you all next year back here at the blog and podcast. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year my dear friends.
