Such easy access to so many ideas and concepts wholly foreign to our own can, at times, be overwhelming without having an anchor of truth to which we may cling. Even as believers, much of what makes the news today, much of what you hear coming from other religions, secular science or contemporary sociology tends to dismiss the Christian faith or simply disregard it as irrelevant. Our guest again this week, Dr. Tawa Anderson of New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, gives us some encouraging reminders about why Christianity is true and how we can defend it in this day and age of skepticism and clashing worldviews.Dr. Tawa Anderson was raised in a non-Christian home and came to faith in high school. The world often appears to us as though it is spinning out of control. Words don't mean what they used to mean. We live amidst a great deal of moral and societal confusion. Statistics are cited that seem to show an increasing number of people who no longer believe in God. The central message of the Christian faith, the deity, death, and resurrection of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, no longer seems to be credible to our postmodern world. The good news is that the Gospel is as relevant and powerful today as it was when it was first proclaimed centuries ago. On this episode, we talk with professor of philosophy and apologetics at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary about his 2021 book Why Believe? Christian Apologetics for a Skeptical Age (B&H Academic, 336-pages bit.ly/WhyBelieve2). Tawa's work provides Christians and non-believers alike timely and insightful reminders about why Christianity remains defensible and credible, even in a world that seems to be spiraling out of control. Dr. Tawa Anderson was raised in a non-Christian home and came to faith in high school. Christian Universalism is a subtle heresy that's frighteningly common among GenZ today. It's a way that teenagers can affirm that "Christ is the only savior" and make other gospel-sounding affirmations while fully embracing the hyper-tolerant worldview of today's culture. In today's conversation, we discuss what Christian Universalism is and how youth workers can help students build their faith on the biblical message.  Discussion Questions: What do we mean by universalism and Christian Universalism in particular? Can you walk us through some of the logic behind Christian Universalism and some of the key Bible verses? Why do you think Christian Universalism is so appealing to today's teenagers? How can youth workers preach the gospel of grace without falling into one of two errors: accidentally implying Christian Universalism, or nuancing the gospel so thoroughly it's become clunky and confusing? How do you recommend youth workers to respond when talking with a teenager who considers themselves a Christian but affirms Christian Universalism? Andrew Slay is an Assistant Pastor at Westwood Baptist Church in Cleveland, TN, where he oversees ministry to high school and middle school students. He's working on his PhD in Apologetics and Culture from NOBTS.  Recommended Resources The following books include Amazon Affiliate links, which provide YPT with a small financial benefit. Youth workers want to disciple teenagers into Christian maturity. Over time, we hope they move on from spiritual milk, towards spiritual meat. This is the vision of worldview formation - but what's that really look like and how do we disciple accordingly?   Discussion Includes:  What do you mean by worldview, and what are some pillars of a distinctively Christian worldview?  As the Director of Worldview Formation as WBU, what are some challenges you've encountered with college students?  What counsel do you have for youth ministers to help their students begin forming a Christian Worldview while in middle school and high school?  If you could choose two or three areas to really focus on as we disciple teenagers, what would you emphasize?  I don't think you'll need to persuade our listeners too much, but if you were talking with a parent who doesn't think their teenager needs doctrine or theology, how would you respond?  As we wrap up, is there a final word of encouragement or admonition you'd like to say to the youth workers listening?   Dr. Rhyne Putman is associate a Professor of Theology and Culture at NOBTS vice president of academic affairs and director of worldview formation at Williams Baptist University and associate professor of theology at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Over the years, his interests expanded into other fields in Christian Education and Spiritual formation including leadership, administration, developmental psychology, risk management, and a heavy investment in the next generation. He has written extensively in adolescent, collegiate, leader training, and Bible teaching areas. Allen now serves as senior pastor at Dunwoody Baptist Church in Atlanta and has been a constant source of wisdom and friendship in my life for over two decades. Ray Sullivan III serves as the Discipleship Consultant in South Georgia for the Georgia Baptist Mission Board. Because conversion is the starting line, not the finish line, Ray is passionate about helping pastors and churches take their next step in developing intentional disciple-making pathways that lead converts to become fully trained disciples of Jesus. Before joining the GBMB, Ray served as lead pastor in churches throughout Kentucky, Florida, and Georgia. In the episode: Learn the events and experiences that influenced each generation and why that matters as we seek to reach and retain Millennials and Gen X. Millennials are the largest generation in the American workforce. Gen X is the first generation to experience the full effects of divorce and both parents working outside the home. Millennials are the first generation to be fully influenced by the cell phone becoming an everyday tool. Gen X accounted for the majority of start-ups pre-pandemic and has incurred more debt than any other generation. Millennials made popular long beards, flannel, and fedoras. Gen X, well, they got parachute pants! Millennials will experience the greatest transfer of wealth in American history so helping them learn to manage money is critical. Gen X are caring for aging parents and local churches can offer caregiver support. Note the pendulum swing regarding what becomes important from one generation to the next. Millennials want to be involved. Gen X are skeptical and need to see authenticity and moral integrity. Listen to learn best practices churches are utilizing to engage both.

PJ was waiting at the end of the water ride for his friends he had invited that day to join them. He was unable to ride it due to weight restrictions. More on PJ's story here --> https://gabaptist.org/food-physical-wellness/ PJ talks about health in disciple-making with Dr. Judi Jackson and Dr. Marcus Glass on this broadcast. Dr. Judi Jackson has been connected with NOBTS for over three decades. She has a Ph.D. in Christian Education and has taught as an adjunct professor since 1995. One of her primary classes on the main campus was "Total Wellness and The Minister." Dr. Marcus Glass earned a doctorate from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio, and is an adjunct professor with Beulah Heights University at their extension center in Albany, GA. He is the lead pastor at New Seasons Baptist Church in Albany, GA. This is a sensitive issue and hard to discuss. Here are some areas the team discusses today: • PJ shares data on the physical health of disciple-makers in the church o Nearly half of pastors feel they don't get enough sleep o 4 out of 10 have high blood pressure o 1 out of 10 have had a cardiac event o 31% have high cholesterol • Dr. Judi talks about how we define "health" o Physical, Spiritual, Mental, Emotional, Social, Environmental • Dr. Glass is a workout machine! But that doesn't mean a Bivocational pastor, full-time with the fire department, and full-time husband and father comes naturally or easily! • PJ shares his journey of weight loss and not using food as a counselor • How can our overall health affect our ability to make disciples? • For many in the past years, mental health has been challenging; where do disciple-makers go to find help? • Where does a person start that is looking to improve their health?

In this episode, you'll find: • One of the most significant challenges for local church pastors and keys to solve it • Why equipping must accompany the announcement of needs to a congregation • Levi identifies three naturally occurring attendance bumps that he calls "waves." • Scott and Levi talk about the necessity of long-range planning and goal-setting for pastors/leaders • Levi has a particular word of encouragement for bi-vocational and multi-vocational leaders • Dr. Skipper shares a new resource called "Ride the Waves" and helps leaders understand how to use the resource to maximize impact during these waves. • https://www.ridethewaves.church/start • Levi explains how the Ride the Waves resource can help churches go "next level." • Scott shares that God is NOT opposed to effort, but He is opposed to earning. He then gives three concepts to help leaders grow as a disciple leader.

We are kicking off this summer with a podcast collaboration! My friends Diane Nix of Contagious Joy 4 Him and Leighann McCoy and I got together and recorded a series of episodes based Leighann's book Spiritual Warfare for Women, this series of podcasts will equip you for the spiritual battles that come your way. Spiritual warfare is real; it's not "spooky" or "woo-woo", it doesn't mean there's a devil behind every bush, but it is impacting our communities, churches, families, and our selves! The good news? God has provided everything we need to find victory through Him. Over the next 2 months we will be unpacking five smooth stones we have been given, the strongholds we face, and how we can stand firm against the enemy. - - - - - Leighann McCoy is the founder of The Prayer Clinic and host of The Prayer Clinic Podcast. Episode 29 - Should Christians Associate with Unbelievers?

I have heard many good Christian people state throughout my years in ministry that some of their good friends are those who are non-believers. I've even had believers in Jesus Christ tell me that they are good friends with people from other religious beliefs. This has always troubled me because scripture is clear about our associations and the type of company we keep. I want everyone to know up front that I am not saying that we should avoid all people who do not believe as we do. The point of this episode is to point us in the right direction about our relationships while keeping true to the word of God. It is absolutely true that Jesus Christ associated, sat, talked, and even ate meals together with sinners. In fact, scripture tells us in Matthew 9: 10 Then it happened that as [e]Jesus was reclining at the table in the house, behold, many tax collectors and [f]sinners came and were dining with Jesus and His disciples. 11 When the Pharisees saw this, they said to His disciples, “Why is your Teacher eating with the tax collectors and sinners?” 12 But when Jesus heard this, He said, “It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick. 13 But go and learn [g]what this means: ‘I desire [h]compassion, [i]and not sacrifice,' for I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”Jesus associated with sinners and the dregs of society in order to give them the gospel and win them to Himself. It was never with the intention of having a lifelong friendship with them. Some of the encounters Jesus had with sinners were a one-time occurrence. He might sit with them, eat, and leave and never see them again. But He always left them with spiritual food and a calling to repent and turn from their sins. When I was attending NOBTS in the early 2000s, we had an assignment to memorize Psalm 1 and be able to recite it to the class. It was actually something that I remember to this day. This passage presents to us a choice we must make in this life...a fork in the road so to speak....one way is the way of the righteous that leads to eternal life and the other is in the path of sinners that leads to destruction. 1 How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked,Nor stand in the ]path of sinners,Nor sit in the seat of scoffers!2 But his delight is in the law of the Lord,And in His law he meditates day and night.3 He will be like a tree firmly planted by [b]streams of water,Which yields its fruit in its seasonAnd its [c]leaf does not wither; And [d]in whatever he does, he prospers.4 The wicked are not so,But they are like chaff which the wind drives away.5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,Nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.6 For the Lord [e]knows the way of the righteous,But the way of the wicked will perish.Notice that the blessed man/woman does not walk with wicked people. They do not stand in the path with sinners. They do not sit with those who are scoffers/unbelievers. All of these people are characterized by wickedness and ungodliness. To walk not in the counsel of the ungodly means to reject any advice from the wicked. It includes avoiding any guiding influence that might shape or direct your way of life toward godlessness. Walking involves progress; thus, the verse instructs, “Don't walk in the counsel, don't stand in the path, don't sit in the seat” of the ungodly. The apparent progression presents a picture of someone walking next to sin, then stopping to stand and take it all in, and then finally sitting right down in sin's seat “to enjoy it. Not walking, standing, or sitting with the ungodly implies steering clear of sin by avoiding participation in every aspect of the sinner's way of life. The apostle Paul warned, “Do not be misled: ‘Bad company corrupts good character'” (1 Corinthians 15:33). Proverbs 22: 24 Do not associate with a man given to anger;Or go with a hot-tempered man,25 Or you will learn his waysAnd find a snare for yourself. How can a Christian expect to to keep progressing forward in their relationship with Christ and be formed more into His image when they associate with sinners and unbelievers? 2 Cor. 6:14 says not to be yolked together or bound together with unbelievers. Why? Because light cannot fellowship with darkness. They have nothing in common, at least not eternal things. That scripture goes on to say, come out from among them and be separate. That is not elevating yourself to a position of being better than, it is separating yourself from evil influences. My grandmother has said it best my whole life, "If you lay down with dogs, you'll get fleas. If you hang around trash long enough, you'll start to stink."Simply put, it is much easier for you to be brought down and participate in evil activities than it is for you to bring them up. This doesn't mean we never talk to, nor associate with people who are non-believers or practice other religions. It doesn't mean we are mean-spirited or think we are better than them. It means we do not have eternal things in common. A believer who “walks not in the counsel of the ungodly” will apply biblical truth to his daily life, letting God's Word be a lamp to guide his feet and a light for his path (Psalm 119:105). His “delight is in the law of the Lord,” and he “meditates on his law day and night,” says Psalm 1:2. This person will grow in faith and spiritual maturity.Loving God and obeying His Word will result in abundant blessings (Joshua 1:8; Luke 11:28; John 14:21). As we read the Scriptures daily, study them, memorize them, and meditate on them night and day, our thinking changes. We no longer love the world or the things in it (1 John 2:15–17). We no longer walk in the counsel of the ungodly. We “don't copy the behavior and customs of this world”; instead, God transforms us by changing how we think. Then we can experience God's good, pleasing, and perfect will (Romans 12:2, NLT).People who walk in the counsel of the ungodly listen to worldly advice, make plans with the wicked, and willfully participate in the sinner's way of life. Romans 8:5–7 describes these people as those “who live according to the flesh” and “have their minds set on what the flesh desires.” By contrast, “those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace. The mind governed by the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so.”What about associating with people of other religions? This one is really simple. 2 John 1 is very clear. Listen to what it says.9 Anyone who goes too far and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God; the one who abides in the teaching, he has both the Father and the Son. 10 If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house, and do not give him a greeting; 11 for the one who gives him a greeting participates in his evil deeds.Did you get that? It says don't even greet them. The KJV version of scripture says do not wish them godspeed. Do not with them a good day. Do not associate with those who preach anything other than Jesus Christ is the only way to eternal life. Why? Because if you give them your approval, you are participating in their evil deeds. That is heavy friends. We are to be people of the kingdom of light, not darkness. That is why I do not associate and have close friends who are non-believers. I do not hang around with people from other religious beliefs. Amos 3:3 asks us a question, How can two walk together unless they be in agreement? The answer to that question is....you can't. You cannot walk with those who do not think like you, walk like you, act like you, believe like you....well, you may be able to, but I can't. I want to associate myself with those who have the same mindset and worldview that I have and that is a mind and belief system that is based on the absolute authoritative word of God and belief in His one and only begotten Son, Jesus Christ. We are to be separate. What are our relationships with non-christian people supposed to look like? We are to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with them until they are converted. Here is what I promise you, if you begin to share the gospel with all of your non-believing friends, or those who do not believe as you do according to the word of God, the separation will happen automatically! Start telling them about the Jesus of the Bible and associating yourself with people who know Jesus Christ.
