"Members often ask me if I am disappointed with how the latter portion of my presidency was affected by the pandemic and the crash of oil prices. To be honest, I am not disappointed. I was able to visit many sections as President-Elect and speak at many events; however, the role of SPE President is much greater than that. This time was critical to serve as chair of the SPE Board and guide our society through an inflection point, requiring us to anticipate how to deliver on our mission to our members in a post-pandemic world". In this episode, Shauna Noonan shares the status of each goal she set while being this year's SPE President and the pandemic's impact on it.   More in this Episode: Energy for Me   More from Shauna Noonan (Twitter @shauna_noonan) SPE Strong: Getting Stronger Strengthening the SPE Conference Experience. As I traveled the globe to engage with our membership, my pride in being a petroleum engineer and professional in the oil and gas industry grew with each visit. I want to thank all the sections and chapters that hosted me, and I pledge to keep my promise to meet with sections where visits were canceled due to the pandemic. I want to thank our SPE staff from all our regional offices for their constant efforts to implement and maintain the programs and create the tools identified in SPE's strategic plan. I also want to express my gratitude to my employer, Occidental Petroleum, for its steadfast support and understanding throughout my journey as SPE President. It is one thing for an individual to see the value that SPE provides in terms of competency development, but it is even better to work for a company that recognizes it as well. As I worked to make our society stronger, I, too, have gained strength from this memorable experience.     We hope you enjoy the SPE Podcast… and take away something useful to your job and career along the way.  Your feedback is welcome, along with ideas for topics you would like to see us cover in future podcasts. SPE Gaia Talks: Measuring What Matters

The panel addresses sustainability in the oil and gas industry using the lens of “Measuring what Matters”. Notwithstanding current global socio-economic conditions, oil and gas is being held to account on its environmental, social and governance performance against a backdrop of climate change and of biodiversity depletion. Current sustainability measurement efforts by the industry are largely carried out to satisfy external stakeholders and even then, very imperfectly to the detriment of the public, policymakers, investors and the industry itself. This panel discussion will look at how better to serve these communities and in particular the internal stakeholders - the business decision-makers in business administration, operations, R&D and commercial roles – so that they and their business can better enable development that is truly sustainable. Our expert panel discusses the significant steps toward fit-for-decision data for both internal and external stakeholders.   PANELISTS: • Pavan Sukhdev, CEO GIST Advisory • Antoine Halff, Co-founder & Chief Analyst, Kayrros • Poppy Kalesi, Global Energy Director, Environmental Defense Fund • Vanessa Miler-Fels – Director of Energy Innovation and Impact, Microsoft MODERATOR: Tatiana Mitrova – Director of Energy Center, Moscow School of Management   More resources: Past SPE Presidents Weigh In on Decarbonization Resetting for Sustainability in the Time of COVID-19 Regain Trust by Aligning With Society´s Needs GIST – Welcome to I360X Pavan Sukhdev TED Speaker Tackling methane emissions: Europe's climate blind spot Kayrros Methane Watch Oxford Energy Forum – Decarbonization Pathways for Oil and Gas – Issue 121 A healthy society requires a healthy planet   We hope you enjoy the SPE Podcast… and take away something useful to your job and career along the way.  Your feedback is welcome, along with ideas for topics you would like to see us cover in future podcasts. The first questions I always ask myself are: “Do I need this new technology?” “Do I understand the root cause of the problem well enough to determine if applying existing technology and accepted practices cannot solve it?” To adequately answer these questions, a good understanding of the fundamentals, such as fluid or mechanical dynamics, is often needed. “To collect, exchange, and disseminate technical knowledge” are not only the first seven words of SPE's mission but also what our society has excelled at over its storied history. — Shauna Noonan, 2020 SPE President Each month, Shauna joins The SPE Podcast to discuss her President's Column and to share her SPE journey. We'll end each of these podcasts asking the audience an interactive question. More from Shauna Noonan Strengthening the Tools and Methods We Use To Disseminate Knowledge to Members Strengthening the Quality of SPE's Technical Content Reinforcing Core Strengths, Delivering Membership Value Q&A With 2020 SPE President Shauna Noonan 2020 SPE President Promises to Focus on Strengthening Organization's Engineering Core   From Shauna's December President's Column: SPE is evaluating how we disseminate our content to make it more visually engaging, bite-sized, and, of course, available through mobile devices. This evaluation includes reviewing the traditional way of publishing technical content through manuscripts. Many students and young professionals want to receive content at a high level first, such as a one-page summary with conclusions, and then can elect to access the full paper if they need the details. SPE may be able to use videos, podcasts, webinars, and other formats to accomplish this. One of my five focus areas during my time as your President will be to strengthen the tools and methods we use to disseminate knowledge to members. My objectives in this area are to create and elevate SPE initiatives to provide quality content in a variety of formats, such as print, video, and audio, so it is more engaging and consumable for all our members. I will also ensure that we will deliver on SPE's Strategic Plan goals of having technical dissemination and exchange methods for easy access and delivery of content and tools through mobile devices.    Our society is membership-driven, and our programs are designed to serve the needs of our diverse and talented membership. To ensure that our society remains relevant for years to come, we need to anticipate the needs of our future members so they are prepared to drive the next wave of innovations and technological advancements for our industry.   Question of the Month What industry podcasts are you listening to? "Our Society has a wealth of technical content, and it is rapidly growing." 2020 SPE President Shauna Noonan outlines four (4) objectives to strengthen the quality of SPE's technical content.  Each month, Shauna will join The SPE Podcast to discuss her President's Column and to share her SPE journey. We'll end each of these podcasts asking the audience an interactive question.   More from Shauna Noonan Strengthening the Quality of SPE's Technical Content Reinforcing Core Strengths, Delivering Membership Value Q&A With 2020 SPE President Shauna Noonan 2020 SPE President Promises to Focus on Strengthening Organization's Engineering Core   From Shauna's November President's Column: Our Society has a wealth of technical content, and it is rapidly growing. The value of that technical content derives from the quality of it. Having high-quality content will continue to strengthen SPE's professional reputation, which is critical when entering new and emerging markets, attracting new members, and, most importantly, maintaining and engaging our current members and corporate sponsors. Our technical content that is consumed daily by our members is also the source of knowledge for the incoming generation, and we need to ensure that it is of the highest quality for our future innovators and leaders to excel. To strengthen the quality of SPE's technical content, I have outlined the following objectives: Increase the awareness and use of all the tools and methods provided to authors to create high-quality papers Educate program committees about their roles and responsibilities toward working with authors to ensure technical quality Establish methods by which to track technical quality within SPE's published and presented content Support and develop a better process for formal peer review. There are many ways we will work on strengthening the quality of our technical content. This is something that I am very passionate about and will champion as your SPE President. I am proud of the wealth of technical knowledge our Society has gathered over decades and grateful to all our members who contribute to our technical repositories. Our SPE logo is a symbol of technical excellence, and we all need to ensure our Society's content and programs are worthy of that stamp of quality.   Question of the Month What attributes do you think makes a high-quality paper? We'll end each of these podcasts asking the audience an interactive question.   More from Shauna Noonan Reinforcing Core Strengths, Delivering Membership Value Q&A With 2020 SPE President Shauna Noonan 2020 SPE President Promises to Focus on Strengthening Organization's Engineering Core   From Shauna's October President's Column: My involvement in SPE has proven to be essential at each pivotal point in my career. As a young engineer, I would gladly pay for my own SPE membership even though I was counting pennies. I considered the annual dues an investment in my career, which continued to pay off repeatedly. I took on many different roles within SPE during my 29 years as a member—embracing positions that would develop my technical knowledge and soft skills, such as leadership and communication. So many doors of opportunity have opened for me because I interacted with my fellow members and utilized what SPE had to offer. The time spent on those SPE activities has always been a wise investment. As your president, I want to expand the value an SPE membership brings to both members and to companies that support their employees' involvement in SPE. Our society is strong, yet I believe there are opportunities for improvement in the following areas: Gain recognition as the technical and unbiased source of information about our industry Develop trust within our industry and with the public Expand the value of membership and attract new members Illustrate value of attending SPE events against competitor events Increase manuscript citations and engage those from outside our industry who want to publish with SPE The theme of my presidency is “SPE Strong: Strengthening the Core.” For the society to continue to grow and expand, we must ensure that the core attributes that have allowed SPE to flourish remain extremely strong, both now and in the future. Based on feedback I have received from fellow members over the past few years, I plan to focus on the five areas summarized below and detailed further in my upcoming columns.   Question of the Month Why did you become an SPE member?
