“Disseminate spiritual wisdom.” This is a message Tami Simon heard loud and clear when she was just 21 and unsure of what she wanted to do and how she wanted to invest the sum of money she had inherited from her father. It remains her life's purpose and the driving mission at the heart of Sounds True, the multimedia publishing company she founded. Sounds True  focuses on promoting spirituality, psychology, health and healing. She joins the Conscious Entrepreneur podcast to discuss the importance of being true to yourself, following your intuition, and why putting love ahead of money most often leads to money anyway. She compares founding and running a business to being in a long term relationship and, having recently passed on the CEO baton, what it feels like to let go.   Just as important as being yourself is allowing others to be themselves. One of the key components of the Inner MBA, which Sounds True puts on with LinkedIn and the annual Wisdom 2.0 conference, is learning how to make space for people who have different views from your own, learning to communicate and collaborate in order to achieve the best outcome for all. Creating such a culture within a corporation inevitably impacts the world at large.   Though she's prone to a metaphor and a poetic line, Tami is committed to telling the truth, as it is one of the core principles, she says, of a spiritual entrepreneur. Join today's discussion to hear more of Tami's insights and initiatives which were well ahead of their time, and now, more timely than ever.    Quotes “For me it feels like a sacred contract, that's one term that might shake people a bit. Or it feels like a promise that I made before I incarnated. It has that level of heft to it, in terms of how I experience it inside myself, as my purpose in life. And I'm very inspired by it. I continue to be inspired by it, it's taken a lot of different forms over the years, and quite honestly it's a little mysterious even to me.” (6:37 | Tami Simon) “The interesting thing is, I tracked over time—every single love project ended up being financially successful. Every single one. And I think that part of it is if I loved it, it was for a reason. And maybe it hadn't had the level of exposure yet, or whatever, but there was something very genuine there that was drawing me in.” (13:18 | Tami Simon)  “Let die what needs to die so what can be born can be born.” (22:14 | Tami Simon) “Be someone who says, ‘I take responsibility for the culture that we are creating together here. Here are my ideas. Be a vocal participant. And if we can invite and create organizations that encourage and welcome and inspire citizenship, we'll find people acting like citizens in the world. And this is a connection that organizations can actually foster, the same kind of citizenship we want to see in our communities.” (38:49 | Tami Simon) “If you don't do it, people aren't going to go to bat the next time. They're not going to stand up and raise their hands if you just say, 'No, we're going to make the economic decision, or what the professionals say.” (40:25 | Tami Simon) “Spiritual integrity, as a person, is non-negotiable. It's non-negotiable. How much money I make is negotiable.” (41:54 | Tami Simon)    Links Connect with Tami Simon: https://innermba.soundstrue.com/ https://www.soundstrue.com/ Connect with Alex Raymond: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/afraymond/ Website: https://consciousentrepreneur.us/ HiveCast.fm is a proud sponsor of The Conscious Entrepreneur Podcast. How to Disseminate Behavior-Analytic Technologies: Inside JABA 18

In the 18th installment of the Inside JABA Series, Dr. Dorothea Lerman joins Editor-in-Chief John Borrero and I to talk about her dissemination efforts, which are described in the Winter 2024 issue of the journal. Specifically, we talk about her discussion paper, "Putting the power of behavior analysis in the hands of nonbehavioral professionals: Toward a blueprint for dissemination."   This paper is definitely worth checking out. In it, Dorothy describes some common barriers to disseminating behavioral strategies and how to overcome them. We then talk about the blueprint she offers for dissemination, which is broken down into seven steps.   These dissemination efforts are described in the context of Dorothy's outreach to public school educators, law enforcement personnel, and health care providers, settings where Dorothy and her colleagues have made successful inroads. Not to spoil the show's content too much, but we touch on the alarming stats regarding the percentage of individuals with disabilities who are either sedated or restrained during dental procedures, and what can be done to improve them.   Even if you don't have a desire to bring behavior-analytic strategies to a novel setting, upon listening to the conversation a second time, I think there are lessons from this podcast that you can use in your daily practice. Things like gathering information about a particular culture or setting, describing concepts and principles in plain language, conducting experiments to see if what you're doing is working... you get the idea.   We also spend a decent amount of time talking about sustaining behavioral practices once they've been implemented in new settings.   One of the things that I forgot to mention during the podcast is that if you're really into dissemination, check out the new edited work, "Disseminating Behavioral Research," in which, coincidentally, the ABA Inside Track crew and I contributed a chapter called, "Non Traditional Options for Dissemination." I'll leave it to you to guess what medium we focused on.   Lastly, the Winter 2024 issue of JABA features several moving tributes to Drs. Brian Iwata, Hank Pennypacker, and Ronnie Detrich. Dorothy and Dr. Jennifer Fritz contributed a memoriam to Brian Iwata, and it's well worth checking out. In the first few minutes of the show, Dorothy shared some poignant stories about how Brian influenced her career, and John discussed the responsibility associated with curating the various tributes for this edition of JABA.   Relatedly, for the next three months, all of these In Memoriam articles will be freely available, so in the unlikely event you're not a JABA subscriber, you can still check them out.  Here are the resources we discussed: Putting the power of behavior analysis in the hands of nonbehavioral professionals: Toward a blueprint for dissemination. Brian A. Iwata, PhD: A Life Well Lived. Dorothy's previous Inside JABA appearance (correction: in the podcast, I incorrectly noted that she appeared in the first Inside JABA episode. Houston, TX Police Department 2019 Annual Report (check out p. 18!). Main JABA site where you can subscribe and access selected free articles. Griffith and Ré (2023): Disseminating Behavioral Research (note: Amazon Associates link). Critchfield et al. (2017). On the social validity of behavior analytic communication: A call for research and description of one method. Previous BOP episodes covering law enforcement interventions. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Getting Started with Impact Evaluation Surveys: A Beginner's Guide, published by Emily Grundy on November 14, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. In 2023, I provided research consulting services to help AI Safety Support evaluate their organisation's impact through a survey[1]. This post outlines a) why you might evaluate impact through a survey and b) the process I followed to do this. Reach out to myself or Ready Research if you'd like more insight on this process, or are interested in collaborating on something similar. Epistemic status This process is based on researching impact evaluation approaches and theory of change, reviewing what other organisations do, and extensive applied academic research and research consulting experience, including with online surveys (e.g., the SCRUB study). I would not call myself an impact evaluation expert, but thought outlining my approach could still be useful for others. Who should read this? Individuals / organisations whose work aims to impact other people, and who want to evaluate that impact, potentially through a survey. Examples of those who may find it useful include: A career coach who wants to understand their impact on coachees; A university group that runs fellowship programs, and wants to know whether their curriculum and delivery is resulting in desired outcomes; An author who has produced a blog post or article, and wants to assess how it affected key audiences. Summary Evaluating the impact of your work can help determine whether you're actually doing any good, inform strategic decisions, and attract funding. Surveys are sometimes (but not always) a good way to do this. The broad steps I suggest to create an impact evaluation survey are: Articulate what you offer (i.e., your 'services'): What do you do? Understand your theory of change: What impact do you hope it has, and how? Narrow in on the survey: How can a survey assess that impact? Develop survey items: What does the survey look like? Program and pilot the survey: Is the survey ready for data collection? Disseminate the survey: How do you collect data? Analyse and report survey data: How do you make sense of the results? Act on survey insights: What do you do about the results? Why conduct an impact evaluation survey? There are two components to this: 1) why evaluate impact and 2) why use a survey to do it. Why evaluate impact? This is pretty obvious: to determine whether you're doing good (or, at least, not doing bad), and how much good you're doing. Impact evaluation can be used to: Inform strategic decisions. Collecting data can help you decide whether doing something (e.g., delivering a talk, running a course) is worth your time, or what you should do more or less of. Attract funding. Being able to demonstrate (ideally good) impact to funders can strengthen applications and increase sustainability. Impact evaluation is not just about assessing whether you're achieving your desired outcomes. It can also involve understanding why you're achieving those outcomes, and evaluating different aspects of your process and delivery. For example, can people access your service? Do they feel comfortable throughout the process? Do your services work the way you expect them to? Why use a survey to evaluate impact? There are several advantages of using surveys to evaluate impact: They are relatively low effort (e.g., compared to interviews); They can be easily replicated: you can design and program a survey that can be used many times over (either by you again, or by others); They can have a broad reach, and are low effort for participants to complete (which means you'll get more responses); They are structured and standardised, so it can be easier to analyse and compare data; They are very scalable, allowing you to collect data from hundreds or thousands of respond...

Mentor And Mentee Relationship No mentor and mentee relationship are the same. They come in different shapes and sizes. However, there are key qualities that each mentor-mentee relationship should possess: Willingness to help each other succeed Disseminate information as needed Give and receive feedback both ways Improve interpersonal skills Actively listen and communicate Empathize for one another Respect each person's time Food For Thought There's no such thing as the perfect mentor and mentee relationship. Each relationship is unique to the people involved. Whether you're exchanging career advice or personal stories, a mentor and mentee should have mutual respect for each other. And who knows? This mentor and mentee relationship might transcend to a life-long friendship. The role of a mentor is simple: Provide guidance and support to a mentee to help them develop professional and personal skills. During a mentor-mentee relationship, a mentor will wear different hats and take on roles that help the mentee achieve their goals. So, what are the roles mentors take to help a mentee achieve his/her goals? Mentorship: Mentors will provide constant feedback, share advice, and give insights into their specific industry. Often times, mentors will share personal anecdotes like, “I wish I knew this…” Devil's advocate: Mentors will challenge the mentee when it comes to making major decisions. That means playing the opposite side and providing new angles to a decision. Support System: They celebrate the big and small wins, show support when mentees face setbacks, and consistently provide words of encouragement. Resource: Mentors have countless resources from tools to people to jobs. When mentors and mentees build a strong rapport, the mentor is inclined to provide the necessary tools, introduce their network, and create new professional connections. As for the role of the mentee, it is simple too: To learn and absorb as much information as they can from the mentor. While the role of the mentee is less varied, they still play an integral role in the relationship. The Mentee can drive the mentorship relationship forward by asking questions and reflecting on their personal values and goals. Ultimately, the Mentee should engage mentorship when they have a clear sense of the outcomes they wish to achieve. So, What should the Mentee do? 1. Initiate Mentees must self-identify as needing mentorship. While everyone could benefit from some form of mentorship, the Mentee must be prepared to reach out for help. Sometimes, there's work that needs to be done before engaging a Mentor. Identify that they would benefit from mentorship. Initiate the mentorship relationship by reaching out for help. Understand that they may need to go through preparatory work to be ready to meet with a Mentor. 2. Engage Once a Mentee is ready to meet with a Mentor, they must embrace the process by fully engaging. There are many different types of mentorship to engage with, from one-time to long-term, in-person to remote. Give feedback to the Mentor. Listen actively in meetings or on the phone, and respond to emails with care. Demonstrate appreciation for Mentorship and support. Inform Mentors of how you've applied their suggestions, or implemented their advice. 3. Reflect And Act Without reflection and follow through, the mentorship relationship cannot progress. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/weinspirepodcast/message

Popa on LinkedIn here. Learn more about Design + Compliance and find all relevant cases and articles here.  Andra's vision: That compliance officers do not have to be police officers, but instead focusing on allowing people to be creative help them grow in their roles.  Andra's 3 advice: What can we do tomorrow: Make sure that the compliance officer is independent. Take a look at your organizational charts and the reality of your organization, and make sure the people in compliance roles are not reporting to anyone in operations.  What can we do in 6 months: Be visible, reachable, and apply concrete design ideas to your compliance work. Not only the compliance role, but also policies and procedures can be designed with different tools. Disseminate your information with readable fonts, maximum 2 pages, more emotional and fun, and targeted to the groups of people who should use them. And then, in the background, keep auditing and iterating, and doing field work how people conceive and make use of your policies and procedures. What can we do in 5 years: Development of tiny habits is key, because things can change so quickly, and we need to be ready for that change. Also, give people autonomy to make decisions for themselves in situations that does not fit into a black-and-white view of e.g. ethics.

“To collect, exchange, and disseminate technical knowledge” are not only the first seven words of SPE's mission but also what our society has excelled at over its storied history. — Shauna Noonan, 2020 SPE President Each month, Shauna joins The SPE Podcast to discuss her President's Column and to share her SPE journey. We'll end each of these podcasts asking the audience an interactive question. More from Shauna Noonan Strengthening the Tools and Methods We Use To Disseminate Knowledge to Members Strengthening the Quality of SPE's Technical Content Reinforcing Core Strengths, Delivering Membership Value Q&A With 2020 SPE President Shauna Noonan 2020 SPE President Promises to Focus on Strengthening Organization's Engineering Core   From Shauna's December President's Column: SPE is evaluating how we disseminate our content to make it more visually engaging, bite-sized, and, of course, available through mobile devices. This evaluation includes reviewing the traditional way of publishing technical content through manuscripts. Many students and young professionals want to receive content at a high level first, such as a one-page summary with conclusions, and then can elect to access the full paper if they need the details. SPE may be able to use videos, podcasts, webinars, and other formats to accomplish this. One of my five focus areas during my time as your President will be to strengthen the tools and methods we use to disseminate knowledge to members. My objectives in this area are to create and elevate SPE initiatives to provide quality content in a variety of formats, such as print, video, and audio, so it is more engaging and consumable for all our members. I will also ensure that we will deliver on SPE's Strategic Plan goals of having technical dissemination and exchange methods for easy access and delivery of content and tools through mobile devices.    Our society is membership-driven, and our programs are designed to serve the needs of our diverse and talented membership. To ensure that our society remains relevant for years to come, we need to anticipate the needs of our future members so they are prepared to drive the next wave of innovations and technological advancements for our industry.   Question of the Month What industry podcasts are you listening to? Distress and Crisis Ontario

Victim Services, a resource available in many communities across Ontario, is a non-profit charitable organization working in cooperation with community partners to assist victims of crime and tragic circumstance. Where police initially respond to a crisis in the community, they deal with the immediate situation and then call in Victim Services to provide emotional and practical support for the victims of trauma and crime. Victim Services receives annual funding from The Ministry of the Attorney General - Victim and Vulnerable Persons Division. This funding comes from The Justice Fund - monies collected by The Province of Ontario from Victim Fine Surcharges. Victim Services relies on the support of the local community and services provided in kind by local police. In Canada in 2011/2012, victim service providers reported that they assisted almost 460,000 primary and secondary victims. The majority of victims assisted were women, of whom the majority were victims of a violent offence by spouse, ex-spouse, intimate partner or other family member. Male victims were notably more likely than females to be victims of non-violent offences (such as theft or destruction of property) or violent offences (non-sexual) involving someone other than a family member. Two front line workers from the Victim Services of Middlesex County in Ontario present in this video and provide us with an insight into the work they do and the types of trauma and emergency situations to which they respond. Barb Mitchell is the Volunteer Coordinator for the local agency who recruits and trains volunteer crisis responders to deal with victims of crime or tragic circumstances. Karla Kingma has been volunteering with Victim Services for many years and is a Team Leader for them as well. Karla takes calls from local Police & Emergency Services and sends crisis responders to the calls when needed. Questions for Further Consideration: 1. What is VCAO? VCAO or Victim Crisis Assistance Ontario, which is sometimes referred to as Victim Services, is a community response program that provide immediate, short-term crisis intervention services to persons affected by crime, tragedy and disaster. VCAO programs offer a variety of crisis intervention services to persons affected by crime, tragedy and disaster 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. VCAO teams of trained staff and volunteer crisis support workers provide emotional support, practical assistance and an information and referral program on-site or by telephone. VCAO programs are volunteer driven, working in partnership with police and other emergency personnel. VCAO programs are delivered through not-for-profit, charitable organizations each governed by a community Board of Directors. VCAO provides assistance for: Abuse, accidents, arson, assaults, break & enter, death notification, debriefing, disaster, domestic violence, drowning, family crisis, fatalities, fire, fraud, grief & bereavement, harassment, home invasion, homicide, missing persons, motor vehicle collisions, personal injury, property crime, robbery, safety planning, sexual assault, stalking, sudden death, and suicide. What does VCAO actually do to assist individuals and families in the community? Crisis responders can: Help victims cope with the impact of a traumatic event. Helps victims regain a sense of personal control. Help victims return their lives to a desired degree of stability. Validate emotions and reactions. Assist victims until their community or natural support network arrives. Disseminate information about available resources/services, appropriate to the situation. Reduce possibility of re-victimization. Identify options/choices at a time when victims may need guidance/direction. Advocate on victim’s behalf. Assist police and other emergency service providers. Provide opportunities for community members to help others in their own community. There are currently 48 VCAO organizations in Ontario and a few communities with direct police based Victim Service Units. The Victim Crisis Assistance Ontario (VCAO) program provides immediate, on-site services to victims of crime 24 hours a day, seven days a week. With a victim’s consent, police arrange for VCAO staff and/or specially trained responders to provide on-site, short-term assistance to victims, and make referrals to community agencies for long-term assistance. During all interactions, the role of VCAO is to assist victims in identifying the options that may be available, providing referrals to community agencies for longer-term assistance and ensuring victims’ immediate needs are attended to. VCAO is delivered by trained staff and/or volunteers. VCAO responders receive in-depth and comprehensive training and provide support to victims of intimate partner abuse, sexual assault, stalking/harassment, elder abuse, suicide, property crime, sudden death, motor vehicle collision, fire and natural disaster. VCAO programs work in partnership with local police and emergency services and are managed by volunteer community boards of directors. How does VCAO or Victim Services offer service to people in emergency situations? Once the police determine that the environment is safe for those who work in Victim Services, emergency and trauma responders are called in to interact directly with victims and to offer understanding and support. Workers – staff and/or volunteers respond without judgement, have strong listening and communication skills and respect confidentiality. They try to determine the immediate needs of the victims and provide them with contacts, referrals and resources, depending upon the situation at hand. They also help the victims work through solution focused problem solving so that the victims feel empowered to move forward with resolution to their situation. What is the basis of the solution-focused plan that Victim Services uses as a framework for supporting families in crisis? A solution-focused plan is one approach used by workers of Victim Services that tries to focus on the strengths of the family in need and it is based on the following questions: What stress-producing situation(s) is the family facing? What issue is causing the most stress for the family? What are the family's options for resolving the situation? What strengths and/or resources are available within the family to improve the situation? The support network? The broader community?

In this episode of Food, Success & Life for the Modern Woman, Julia Rucklidge talks about her trials in using micronutrients for the treatment of mental illnesses. She shares about the advances they have made in learning what can lead to reducing and eliminating symptoms of ADHD, anxiety, PMS, depression in both adults and children. Her research is quite astounding and she’s making waves to change the way we treat our illnesses with methods other than drugs.   In the trials they perform in her research lab, they take an approach where they give everyone the same micronutrients, and then test to see if and how that worked. It’s difficult to give everyone something different and pin point the trials that worked. They give people a broad spectrum of micronutrients, in levels that are higher than the average recommended allowances but in a safe level and within a therapeutic range.   They did trials with ADHD. Half went into micronutrient and half went into placebo groups, and those that were on the micronutrient group showed significant changes in their ADHD symptoms.   They also just completed a study to explore ceasing smoking. Now doing a study for women experiencing PMS symptoms, to treat women naturally and looking at women and depression, women with postpartum depression, helping people with insomnia, children with ADHD, etc.   What is the best way to spread the word and talk to practitioners about this? Disseminate results. Step 1 – Studies need to be submitted into a journal to have great impact and be taken seriously. Step 2- Media will be present to listen to results. They will help spread the word to the masses. Step 3- Julia is spreading the word, public speaking, interviews, podcasts, get the information to the public, and now trying to get the information to politicians. Step 4- Need to convince authorities that it’s better and cheaper than the alternative which is drugs. This is difficult because most drugs’ patents are coming to an end, so they are becoming cheaper. Gearing their research towards finding out if they can make micronutrients cheaper.   Bottom line is that it’s hard. There’s a monopoly on healthcare by pharmaceutical companies.   Use of nutrients to impact adults with ADHD Her lab did an amazing trial. It was only done for 8 weeks due to funds. It often takes several months to start to see a difference in a study. Despite that, they were still able to identify differences. They found that about 50% to 60% of people given micronutrients showed a great response during that period of time, 20% to 30% showed mild change over that period of time. And, a 20% to 25% of people don’t respond at all. This could be due to genetics, other diseases, other factors, etc. While they were targeting ADHD symptoms, they also noticed better response in terms of mood, sleep, calm, and reduction of panic attacks. And in terms of long term, people who stayed on the nutrients they no longer met criteria for ADHD. Those that did not continue on the nutrients, regressed back to where they started before the trial.   Dr. Rucklidge foresees her lab being in the company of the big researchers in 10-20 years from now, and hopes that the research being done will hit mainstream.   Let’s make noise and keep spreading the word!   15 Day Fat Loss Kick Start Ebook Download your FREE copy here!! About Julia Rucklidge: Julia Rucklidge is a Professor of Clinical Psychology in the Department of Psychology at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand. Originally from Toronto, Canada, she did her undergraduate training in neurobiology at McGill University in Montreal. She then completed a Master’s and PhD at the University of Calgary in clinical psychology followed by a two year post-doctoral fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto. In 2000, she joined the Department of Psychology where she teaches child psychology in the Clinical Psychology Programme and more recently, introduced the topic of Mental Health and Nutrition into the wider psychology program. Her interests in nutrition and mental illness grew out of her own research showing poor outcomes for children with significant psychiatric illness despite receiving conventional treatments for their conditions. In the last decade, she has been running clinical trials investigating the role of broad-spectrum micronutrients in the expression of mental illness, specifically ADHD, Bipolar Disorder, anxiety and stress and PTSD associated with the Canterbury earthquakes. Julia has over 100 publications and was the recipient of the Ballin Award 2015 from the NZ Psychologist Society, an award that recognizes notably significant contributions to the development or enhancement of clinical psychology in Aotearoa New Zealand.
