How My Business Ran Without Me for 2 Months | The Way I See It

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 4, 2024 16:29

In this unique episode of Tukatalks, Ram Sareen shares some of his personal health journey, his philosophy when starting Tukatech, and why he believes that family owned businesses are more resilient than public companies. Toward the end, Sareen shares clips submitted by Tukatech employees sharing how they have grown during their time with the company.Ram Sareen started his fashion technology company, Tukatech, after a short-lived early retirement. At age 45, he'd had a cardiac arrest on a dentist's chair due to excessive anesthesia. He was declared dead, but was miraculously revived. With this second chance came a new perspective on life, people, and the reality that one day we all will leave this world. He decided to leave corporate America and retire early.Just a few months into retirement, Sareen became restless from boredom. He knew he needed more than a life of leisure. He wanted to create something that made a difference, and thus Tukatech was born.Sareen started Tukatech as a passion project, and was determined to avoid the common pitfalls of public companies. Tukatech remains a private, family-owned business to this day. This has given Sareen the ability to run his company his way, and to prioritize the development of his team over quarterly profit goals. This decision recently proved to be a wise one.About 30 years later, in early 2024, Ram Sareen went in for a medical check up before a planned trip to Asia. The doctors discovered multiple blocked arteries in his heart, indicating a looming "silent heart attack," miraculously caught just in time to operate and repair the blockages.Sareen was not allowed to work during nearly 2 months of recovery. Tukatech, however, continued operating and supporting users from all over the world. Some CEOs like to brag that nothing gets done without them. For Sareen, however, this trial proved that no matter what happens to him, his team is what makes Tukatech resilient. If you love Tukatalks, please leave us a five star review on Apple podcasts, or wherever you listen to podcasts. Sewn products manufacturers box themselves into thinking they are "pants manufacturers," or "dress manufacturers," or "shirt manufacturers." The reality is that most products require similar processes, people, and equipment to manufacture.Clothing businesses in Canada must be versatile manufacturers, due to the relatively small population size spread across a large geographical area. This requires innovative process engineering to adapt the same people and machinery to whatever the next order requires. There is no room to waste time, talent, or material. In this episode, Ram Sareen shares how to make changes to your apparel production processes that will produce measurable and visible results:✓ ZERO buffers✓ ZERO pre-inspection of fabric,✓ ZERO fabric relaxation✓ ZERO ticketingTukatalks is the show where fashion industry experts share what NOT to do.NOTE:This episode of Tukatalks discusses how the use of technology eliminates processes in apparel manufacturing. You can reduce your garment manufacturing cost by 10% with this simple paradigm shift: the most high-skilled job in the cutting room is NOT fabric cutting. It is fabric SPREADING.If engineered properly, one person can spread and inspect fabric at the same time. With proper fabric planning and roll management, you can eliminate ticketing and still control shading, while maximizing every inch of fabric that can be used.In this episode, Ram Sareen shares real world footage of the best fabric spreading practices in action and explains how good engineering can turn your cutting room from your biggest headache into your most valuable asset.Tukatalks is the show where fashion industry experts share real-world knowledge gained through hands-on experience.Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tukatalksFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/tukatalksTwitter: https://twitter.com/tukatalks

This episode is the replay of a conversation between Ram Sareen and David Birnbaum hosted by Just-Style in the Cut the Noise webinar on September 23, 2020.The key to developing a fashion business strategy is problem solving. Problem solving is not that difficult. It is not rocket science. Then again, to the rocket scientist, rocket science is not that difficult at least when compared to filling out a tax return. It is just what we do.Problem solving is a three-part process:Agree there is a problemRecognize that solving the problem is sufficiently important to pay the priceDevise a comprehensive integrated strategy based on accurate informationThe obstacle is all about point 3. Using accurate information. In truth, we are all drowning in a sea of noise. Some start with a solution, then shoehorn the data to fit that solution. Others employ one dataset to prove their point when a second or even a third dataset would provide better, more accurate information. This seminar serves two purposes. To show how to separate out the noise and devise a strategy based on accurate informationTo provide solutions for serious problems facing Asia’s garment export industriesThis is not some academic, theoretical exercise but practical, doable strategies that can materially affect millions of lives. One final question: Why present this on a public platform? Would it not be better to speak directly to relevant governments and/or the national industry organizations?Industries, countries, and perhaps the entire world are run by a dominant minority. It is only during a time of crisis, such as now, that the dominant minority can be replaced by a new creative minority. However, the dominant minority will not go down without a fight. Effecting real change requires ownership of the tools of change. Going to governments allows them to distort the process to protect themselves and their power. Going public denies the ability to distort.Tukatalks is the show where fashion industry experts share real-world knowledge gained through hands-on experience.Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tukatalksFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/tukatalksTwitter: https://twitter.com/tukatalks
