As a person of color, I felt this painfully myself.” “作为一个有色人种,我自己也深有体会。”Musandu said he is seeing a demand for his services, but his product is designed to supplement traditional photography not replace it. The goal is to help a buyer make better decisions and reduce product returns and waste. In addition, he said, the company creates new jobs for computer programmers, who train the systems that create the models. “If brands are serious about inclusion efforts, they will continue to hire these models of color,” Musandu said.“如果品牌认真对待包容性努力,他们将继续雇用这些有色人种模特,”穆桑杜说。Others in the fashion industry are fully using AI. Cameron Wilson is a former fashion photographer who started a company in Britain called The Diigitals. Wilson, who is white, designed a Black, female model named Shudu in 2017. Wilson was criticized for creating a Black model. But Shudu was used in jobs for companies like Louis Vuitton and BMW. It also helped the human model Alexsandrah. She has worked in fashion shows as a real-life version of the AI model. Alexsandrah said she is proud of her work that has come from The Diigitals. “The future generations can look back at and be like, ‘These are the pioneers,'” she said. Other models are not feeling so good about AI. Yve Edmond works as a “fit model.” She tries on clothes for companies who want to see how their designs fit a real person. She worries that the AI modeling companies are using images and videos of real people to train their systems. She calls that a violation because humans are not being paid for their part in the technology. Edmond said she was called for a photo session, but there were no new clothes. She was asked to move her body in certain ways and walk for a recording. The client said it was “research.” Edmond said she felt “swindled.” Unlike film actors and writers, who went on strike to protest the use of AI without a legal agreement, there are no similar labor groups for models. Ziff, of Model Alliance, is pushing for labor laws for fashion workers. The state of New York is working on the Fashion Workers Act. The law would include laws related to models who are used in AI. A model would need to give written permission to a company that planned to use AI to create a computer image of the model. The contract would show the pay rate and the length of time that the replica could be used. For AI and the fashion business, it is still early. Ziff compared it to a time of lawlessness in the early American West. Alexsandrah said she believes AI is helping her career—with the right rules. But Edmond is not so sure about AI. She said Earth has “a person of every shade, every height, every size. Why not find that person and compensate that person?”

Alexsandrah is a fashion model in London. She has a twin. But her twin is not her sister. The twin is a product of Artificial Intelligence, or AI. Whenever Alexsandrah is not available to work with a photographer, the virtual twin takes her place. When a company chooses to use the AI Alexsandrah, the real-life version gets paid. Alexsandrah said her AI twin is exactly like her. Alexandrah's twin is an example of how computer images are influencing creative industries. Those in favor of using AI in fashion say the virtual models permit companies to show possible buyers how their clothing looks on people of all shapes and sizes. In the real world, it would be difficult and costly to find a model for every skin color and body shape. The companies that make clothing say using AI prevents people from buying their products, trying them on at home, and then sending them back if they dislike them. The problem is that AI models can take work away from human models, makeup artists and photographers. The fashion industry has often been criticized for using models who are only white or tall or who fit one idea of beauty. Activists for including many groups in fashion say some companies could seem like they are employing minorities when they are just using AI models. Sara Ziff is a former fashion model who started Model Alliance, a nonprofit group for workers' rights in the fashion industry. Ziff said the use of AI shows there is a difference between the industry's words and its actions. Levi Strauss is an American clothing company known for its blue jeans. In March 2023, the company said it would be testing AI-generated models from a company in Amsterdam. The aim was to show how its clothing fit people of all sizes. But after criticism, the company said it would not reduce its use of human models. Levi Strauss said it would not “substitute” AI for action toward its “diversity, equity and inclusion goals.” The Associated Press (AP) recently asked some clothing businesses to state their position on the use of AI models. AP asked Target, Kohls, Nieman Marcus, Walmart and Macys. It also asked international companies Temu, Shein and H&M. Some chose not to answer. Others said they do not use AI models. Walmart said it does not use AI models but “suppliers may have a different approach to photography.” Lalaland.ai creates AI models. He started the company when he saw that not many models looked like him – Black and African.Lalaland.ai 创建人工智能模型。 “One model does not represent everyone that's actually shopping and buying a product,” he said. “一个模型并不能代表所有实际购物和购买产品的人,”他说。

In this unique episode of Tukatalks, Ram Sareen shares some of his personal health journey, his philosophy when starting Tukatech, and why he believes that family owned businesses are more resilient than public companies. Toward the end, Sareen shares clips submitted by Tukatech employees sharing how they have grown during their time with the company.Ram Sareen started his fashion technology company, Tukatech, after a short-lived early retirement. At age 45, he'd had a cardiac arrest on a dentist's chair due to excessive anesthesia. He was declared dead, but was miraculously revived. With this second chance came a new perspective on life, people, and the reality that one day we all will leave this world. He decided to leave corporate America and retire early.Just a few months into retirement, Sareen became restless from boredom. He knew he needed more than a life of leisure. He wanted to create something that made a difference, and thus Tukatech was born.Sareen started Tukatech as a passion project, and was determined to avoid the common pitfalls of public companies. Tukatech remains a private, family-owned business to this day. This has given Sareen the ability to run his company his way, and to prioritize the development of his team over quarterly profit goals. This decision recently proved to be a wise one.About 30 years later, in early 2024, Ram Sareen went in for a medical check up before a planned trip to Asia. The doctors discovered multiple blocked arteries in his heart, indicating a looming "silent heart attack," miraculously caught just in time to operate and repair the blockages.Sareen was not allowed to work during nearly 2 months of recovery. Tukatech, however, continued operating and supporting users from all over the world. Some CEOs like to brag that nothing gets done without them. For Sareen, however, this trial proved that no matter what happens to him, his team is what makes Tukatech resilient. If you love Tukatalks, please leave us a five star review on Apple podcasts, or wherever you listen to podcasts. For over 20 years, Alan has led technology teams at some of the world's most recognizable brands. He has a wealth of insights into how next-generation technology can transform customer experiences and improve business processes. In this conversation, Alan shares how H&M uses technology for sustainability, his insights into the ways startups can best collaborate with enterprises, and details about how smart mirrors piloted at H&M are now in use at both H&M and COS to enhance the customer experience.Editor's note: This episode was recorded in 2022 when Alan was still CTO of H&MQuick hits from Alan:On leveraging data locked in clothing tags to enhance customer experience: “There's a lot of RFID data locked in tags on garments. We decided to lift the data out of our core warehousing systems and we created a data layer in the store that now mimics what's in the warehouse. By using 5G readers embedded in the ceiling and RFID readers in the walls, we can get 99% accuracy of everything that's in the store at the same time. When you pick a garment up and walk around the store, we know which are going into the fitting rooms and which ones are being left behind. Which ones are being tried on which ones are being returned to the rack. We can create an experience for you with a mirror [using that data]. By lifting the data out and making it available using artificial intelligence and machine learning, it becomes more predictive.”On the global nature of innovation: “The way we have to look at innovation is that it comes from anywhere and everywhere in a corporation and around the world. It's not bound by any geography anymore.”On how startups and corporations can best collaborate: “Corporations tend to define their problems too tightly and they're looking for specific solutions; [doing so] loses the creativity of the startups. You lose the intellectual capital that the startups bring, on top of their technology and services if you try to focus them too much. [As a startup], you want to present a business problem, and instead of telling [a corporation] how to solve it, ask them what they can bring to the table in order to make it work and make it solvable.”Recent Book Recommendation: Everybody Wants to Rule the World by R “Ray” Wang--Like what you hear? He started his career eleven years ago with a brand called Religious Expressions, selling t-shirts through multiple brands. Over the last three years, 3:16 Collection has made about 6 million in sales, transitioning from brick and mortar to ecommerce. Through Million Dollar Brands, Jaylen teaches people how to identify problems and create solutions through their clothing brands, emphasizing the importance of community building. 3:16 Collection has gone from selling just T-shirts to a full-scale clothing line including joggers, backpacks, jewelry, accessories and (soon to release) sneakers. He emphasizes that he wanted something unique to him as a believer and fashion lover, and something on the next level. He believes that his brand stands out from other Christian t-shirt companies due to the quality of the garments and the unique design process. The clothing industry is the last trillion-dollar sector that hasn't been fully automated.  Many apparel makers have also been hesitant to talk about automation because of the ramifications and possible loss of jobs.  Still, there is a quiet effort underway to develop machines that can automate some parts of jeans factories and hopefully bring more manufacturing back from overseas.  Tim Aeppel, reporter at Reuters, joins us for how robots are coming for your blue jeans.   Next, as more of Gen Z enters the workplace and communications increasingly happen online and in text formats, something is getting lost in translation.  Older colleges are having a hard time keeping up with Gen Z's use of emojis, slang, and even punctuation. Danielle Abril, “Tech at Work” writer at for the Washington Post, joins us for how workplace language is changing with younger employees.   Finally, when is a bumblebee a fish?  When a unanimous ruling by a California state appeals court deems it so.  Public-interest groups had asked the state to include four types of bumblebees on its list of endangered species, but the 50-year-old law only applied to birds, mammals, fish, amphibians, or reptiles.  Because the legal definition of a fish was vague and had been used to include other animals in separate instances, the bee was added to the list. Matt Grossman, reporter at the WSJ, joins us for the legal wrangling it took to get there.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Instagram marketing and TikTok marketing efforts will ONLY work if your clothing business clearly expressed identity, has social proof, and has a high quality looking website. Social media marketing becomes relatively easy when these foundational components of your clothing brand are sorted out. This info applies to your clothing brand, clothing line, fashion brand, fashion line, streetwear brand, streetwear line, t shirt business, print on demand (POD), dropshipping and beyond!

The fashion industry contributes 10 per cent of annual global carbon emissions - that's more than all international flights and maritime shipping combined. And over 80 per cent of what we wear ends up at landfill here in New Zealand - or about 220,000 tonnes. If you thought PK Beans $BEAN is just a children's clothes retailer, you'd better think again. Whereas children's clothes retailers simply stack, rack and sell on volume, $BEAN is bringing the kind of innovation to the space that we once saw from the likes of Apple. Just as Apple did back in the day, $BEAN is creating a complete experience out of their products that includes the use of Augmented Reality stories with characters that carry great messages while showcasing their products. More than just a cool idea, $BEAN innovation is creating some eye-popping KPI's in it's very early pivot such as: 10,000 customers 62% returning customer rate $29 on every $1 of ad spend 18,000 + orders in 2020 55% increase in online visitors $1.5M + in 2020 sales .... and much more Beyond Augmented Reality, $BEAN has also incorporated a second-hand resale and sustainable initiative that, combined with the fact it is Canada's only public company with a board dominated by women, is quickly becoming a great ESG company. Why is that important? ESG investing (Environmental, social and corporate governance) is a very big trend in the United States, where BEAN is expanding to next! Last week, we heard from Liz Rickett, co-founder of the OR Foundation, and we had a conversation that I hope brought some nuance to your understanding of the global second-hand industry, including the industry in Accra, Ghana.  Today we’re joined by four Ghanians: David, Sammy, Yayra and Kwamena. All have different stories to tell in the second-hand sphere. First up, you’ll hear from David Adams. David’s family has run a second-hand clothing business in Kantamanto Market in Ghana for over thirty years. After finishing his degree, David took the helm of the business in 2014. He told us a bit about his business at Kantamanto, and what his day-to-day as a reseller looks like. Since David’s family has been in this industry for so long, I also wanted to get his perspective on how things have changed in the last 30 years. You’ll hear all this and more coming up on the show. Then, we have Sammy. Sammy is graduate of Radford University of Fashion, and today he’s a fashion designer and member of the Board of Fashion Ghana. His sustainable streetwear brand utilizes upcycled clothing from Kantamanto Market. Finally, we have Yayra and Kwamena of The Revival and Afro District. These two are vintage wizards. They have spent years sourcing gems from Kantamanto for resale, repair, upcycling and styling. So...how did a husband and wife come to be here, making and selling clothing?Well... It all began with a Volkswagon Van.Adventure. Risk. Excitement. Growth.Stepping off of the Cliff. Finding out what this planet has to offer. Allan and Julie met over a VW Van - his, to be honest. He'd pieced it together from two or three old vans. She loved it, and found him to be equally engaging and exciting. She hopped in, swooned by his kiss and promise of adventure, and off they went to travel the world and create beauty together. (corny but true)20 years (and several vans) later, they are still jumping off cliffs. The most recent being the creation of Kaikuna, a clothing company founded with the simple goals of following passions, supporting the betterment of a healthy planet, and giving back.Wear Ever You Go: Be yourself. Fast fashion focuses on speed and low cost delivering new ‘collections' of clothing for every season of every year inspired by the latest catwalk looks or celebrity styles. But this low-cost, disposable way of buying clothes is having an impact on the environment. This often includes growing the cotton (land use and chemicals), huge amounts of freshwater use, toxic chemicals in the manufacturing process and the impact of endless clothes filling landfills. Rapanui is a clothing company that has always had the environment at the center of their business, using renewable energy, organic cotton and recycling all the water they use. And their latest idea is a circular economy t-shirt which can be sent back over and over cutting down many of the environmental impacts of disposable fashion. In this interview I speak to one of the two brothers who founded the business Mark Drake-Knight about the company, this product and the exciting idea of Tee-Mill a platform they created which helps anyone set up a circular economy fashion brand.
