A quirky episode on ghosts, hauntings and horror on this week's Mehfil. Two women writers from India and Pakistan interrogate ghostly encounters and how to write about them. Host Amrita Ghosh welcomes Jessica Faleiro from Goa (India) and Sehyr Mirza from Lahore (Pakistan) to explore the writing of ghosts, hauntings and horror on a personal level as well as with regards to collective traumas such as the Partition or colonial histories. The writers speak of childhood experiences with haunted houses, ghostly sightings and collective psychosomatic experiences. They reflect on whether stories of paranormal afterlives create narratives of resistance in the present. Faleiro speaks about her “real” ghostly experience in her grandmother's ancestral house that sent her off on a journey to write about these topics. Mirza also recalls her grandmother's poignant and moving tales from before the Partition as well as horrifying stories during the period of Partition that inspired Mirza to write. Both writers discuss the rich repertoire of the horror genre within the South Asian context starting with the simple traditions of families and friends gathering around to narrate spooky stories. Ghosh asks the writers about their books. Faleiro's book Afterlife: Ghost Stories from Goa excavates Goa's rich history by weaving in the Spanish Inquisition and Portuguese colonialism through paranormal encounters set within the present. Mirza talks about her edited anthology titled The Other in the Mirror: Stories from India and Pakistan in which she takes on the ghost of the Partition that continues to haunt people and that still creates fear of the “other" by continuing to maintain borders and divisions. She also speaks of her own story within that collection, one that instrumentalizes haunting for political symbolism. Faleiro and Mirza also point to new trends in literature and films within the horror genre in India and Pakistan and the possibilities opened up by the rise of digital media. Lastly, the conversations moves to ask if scary stories set us free from our fears or whether they simply serve to make us more afraid.Jessica Faleiro's fiction, poetry, essays and travel pieces have been published in Asia Literary Review, Forbes, Indian Quarterly, IndiaCurrents, Coldnoon, Joao Roque Literary Journal, Mascara Literary Review, Muse India and the Times of India as well as in various anthologies. Her first book Afterlife: Ghost stories from Goa (2012) is about a Goan family and their ‘ghostly' encounters and her second book The Delicate Balance of Little Lives (2018) is a collection of interlinked stories about five middle-class Goan women trying to cope with loss. She won the Joao Roque Literary Award ‘Best in Fiction 2017 for her short story ‘Unmatched.' Faleiro is currently the Commissioning Editor for the Joao Roque Literary Journal. She has an MA in Creative Writing from Kingston University, UK, talks about creativity, and runs creative writing workshops.Sehyr Mirza is a journalist and creative writer based in Lahore, Pakistan. Her work has appeared in The BBC, Deutsche Welle, Dawn, The News International, Outlook India, Huffington Post, The Wire, Pakistan Today and other outlets. She is the editor of an anthology titled The Other in the Mirror: Stories from India and Pakistan published by Yoda Press in India and Folio Books in Pakistan. Mirza has also received fellowships at Atlantic Council, Washington DC, The Swedish Institute and she has been a visiting fellow at Rajeev Circle Fellowship, San Francisco. She was the recipient of Women Waging Peace Award by Kroc Institute for International Peace and Justice in 2019 and holds a degree in English Literature from Goldsmiths, University of London.Amrita Ghosh is Assistant Professor of English, specializing in South Asian literature at the University of Central Florida. Award-winning actor, writer, presenter and comedian Aatif Nawaz has travelled the globe, notably for his work as a cricket commentator for the iconic Test Match Special. But Lahore in Pakistan is where he feels like he's home. Can the city's stunning Mughal architecture and extraordinary array of delicious food and cultural experiences tempt Shaun to Pakistan? Your Place Or Mine is the travel podcast that isn't going anywhere - not until guests can convince Shaun Keaveny it's worth getting off the sofa for. Each week a familiar face will try to persuade Shaun and resident geographer, historian and comedian Iszi Lawrence that jetting off to their favourite destination is worth the hassle. Across the series listeners will be able to figuratively globe-trot to a new destination, as guests share a personal guide to their favourite place on the planet. Iszi will be on hand to check out the facts during the podcast's metaphorical tour of its visitors' much-loved locations. With all the missed travel these past two years, Your Place Or Mine will explore whether getting back on a plane is too much for our wallets and limited carbon budgets, or if seeing the world and experiencing global cultures is something we can't afford to miss. Your Place or Mine is a BBC Audio production for BBC Radio 4 and BBC Sounds. Producers: Proinsias O'Coinn and Jen Whyntie
Vegan diet eases arthritis pain, finds new study Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, April 4, 2022 A low-fat vegan diet, without calorie restrictions, improves joint pain in patients with rheumatoid arthritis, according to a new study conducted by researchers at the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. Study participants also experienced weight loss and improved cholesterol levels. “A plant-based diet could be the prescription to alleviate joint pain for millions of people suffering from rheumatoid arthritis,” says Neal Barnard, MD, lead author of the study and president of the Physicians Committee. “And all of the side effects, including weight loss and lower cholesterol, are only beneficial.” (NEXT) Researchers Discover Cannabis-Mushroom Combination That “Kills Over 90% Of Colon Cancer Cells” Cannabotech Integrative (Israel), April 1, 2022 For the last several years, scientists with Cannabotech, a biomedical company developing oncological products using cannabis, have been developing an “Integrative-Colon” product they say kills over 90% of colon cancer cells. According to Cannabotech, they have concluded a study using not only cannabis, but a unique combination of cannabinoids and mushroom extracts, which they tested on various colon cancer subtypes, representing different molecular changes common in these colon cancer subtypes. Their results of the cell model study were astounding, showing that its “Integrative-Colon” products killed over 90% of colon cancer cells — and they attribute this to to the mushroom and cannabis combination. Given the fact that the survival rate for colorectal cancer is just 65%, the idea that an easily grown plant and fungus could be used to save hundreds of thousands of lives, is inspiring to say the least. Humans share more DNA with mushrooms than we do with plants, a lot more. (NEXT) Vitamin C could help reduce toxic side effects of common cancer treatment University Nove de Julho (Brazil), April 4, 2022 A study conducted in rats suggests that taking vitamin C may help to counteract the muscle atrophy that is a common side effect of the chemotherapy drug doxorubicin. Although clinical studies would be needed to determine the safety and effectiveness of taking vitamin C during doxorubicin treatment, the findings suggest vitamin C may represent a promising opportunity to reduce some of the drug's most debilitating side effects. “Our results suggest vitamin C as a potential adjunct therapy to assist in the management of peripheral muscle disorders after treatment with doxorubicin, thereby improving functional capacity and quality of life and reducing mortality,” said Antonio Viana do Nascimento Filho, a master's student in medicine at University Nove de Julho (UNINOVE) in Brazil, first author of the study. Nascimento Filho will present the findings at the American Physiological Societyannual meeting during the Experimental Biology (EB) 2022 meeting, held in Philadelphia April 2–5. (NEXT) Stress markers high, antioxidants low in breast cancer patients University of Lahore (Pakistan), April 4 2022. Research revealed blood inflammatory and stress marker variations between women with breast cancer and those who did not have the disease. The study compared 498 women with breast cancer with an equal number of age-matched women without the disease. Serum samples were analyzed for matrix metalloproteinases, interleukins, heat shock proteins, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-a, a proinflammatory cytokine), nitric oxide, inducible nitric oxide synthase, malondialdehyde (MDA, a marker of oxidative stress), vitamins A, C and D, the antioxidant glutathione, and antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase. Compared to women who did not have breast cancer, breast cancer patients exhibited overexpression of the inflammatory marker matrix metalloproteinase 9, the proinflammatory protein interleukin-1, heat shock protein 27 (which can be protective as well as destructive), TNF-a, nitric oxide, inducible nitric oxide synthase and MDA. Women with breast cancer had low levels of vitamins A, C and D, glutathione, catalase and SOD.
Preparing for Lent: The Journey – Day 1 of 3 MESSAGE SUMMARY: On Wednesday, March 3, many Anglicans, along with many other denominations and churches around the world, began their observance of the Christian season of Lent with their Ash Wednesday services. Beginning today and the two days following, A Word from the Lord is providing three videos, through Gafcon Global Anglicans, with the hope that they will help you to continue to prepare your hearts and minds as you walk with Jesus in your journey this Lenten season. Gafcon's videos have included people, songs, cultures, and images from around the World so that you can be encouraged and equipped to consider your own mortality within the context of God's Grace of Eternal Life given to us through Jesus' suffering and death on the cross and His Resurrection on Easter at the end of Lent. There is a broad range of practices that Anglicans and other Christian denominations and churches follow during the Lenten season. In an age of increasing instant gratification, the practice of Lent, leading up to Easter, runs against the tide in many cultures. With these three-days of videos from Anglicans round the World, we see the Anglican diversity in the practice of Lent from many cultures, languages, and races. What is Lent about and what are some songs of worship which can, as Reverend Canon Wes Jagoe says, "...help us slow down and focus on our relationship with the Lord"? Also, Rev. Jodie McNeil of Australia, shares, "I've started to see that it is good to synchronize my calendar with Christian brothers and sisters from all tribes, tongues, and nations because everyone needs to choose a calendar to follow...but as we live as foreigners and exiles, it seems like a good thing for Christians to celebrate together the rhythm of our church calendar." Andrew Lumbuye of Uganda, discusses his Lenten perspective and how it provides him a context for selecting songs for Lent, “Lent is a period of soul searching, reconnecting of getting back to the Lord . . . the songs that I have chosen are those that help us to empty ourselves; that help us cry out ourselves to the Lord . . .” Archbishop Miguel Uchoa of Brazil discusses the Church's mission for lent within the Gospel of John, “Lent is the time of reflection and nothing better to reflect on than the mission of the Church . . . when they {the Apostles Andrew, John, and Peter} learn about Jesus and who Jesus was, they want to spend time with Him – learn from Him. That must be our objective.” Preparing for Lent: The Journey, Day-1 Includes: The Reverend Canon Wes Jagoe, former USMC Platoon Leader in Afghanistan and Iraq and now an Anglican Priest serving as the Chaplain to Archbishop Foley Beach, introduces and provides a background to Lent Jodie McNeil, Senior Minister at Jamberoo Anglican Church in Australia, discusses a Global positioning of the Lenten season. Also, he introduces and sings a song, “Ancient of Days”, that he is teaching his church for Lent The Sayuni Choir, from the Anglican Church of Burundi St. Marks Parish Nagara, shares a song – “Jesus Loves Us” A Worship Team, from the Chapel of St. Stephen and All the Martyrs in Lahore Pakistan, shares a song – “Come to the Waters” TODAY'S PRAYER: Keeping the Sabbath, Lord, will require a lot of changes in the way I am living life. Teach me, Lord, how to take the next step with this in a way that fits my unique personality and situation. Help me to trust you with all that will remain unfinished and to enjoy my humble place in your very large world. In Jesus' name, amen. Scazzero, Peter. Emotionally Healthy Spirituality Day by Day (p. 129). Zondervan. Kindle Edition. TODAY'S AFFIRMATION: Today, Because of who I am in Jesus Christ, I will not be driven by Anger. Rather, I will abide in the Lord's Forgiveness. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in Me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing.” (John 15:5). Welcome to the first episode of the IMGUK Podcast. Meet one of my partners in crime Dr. Mujtaba Hasnain Nadir. We talk about his memories of his city, his time in the UK and how he felt moving to a new country. Or in his own words: "How do you mourn a city? Or more accurately your memory of it? The lights still flicker on the streets of Lahore, but do the flicker the same as they did in your youth? Rhythmic, predictably unpredictable, too bright at the Liberty roundabout but not ever quite bright enough in the streets of Heera Mandi. Our full bellies and empty hearts. The inviting call to prayer at the beautiful Badshahi mosque. So many memories, so rich and fragrant. You can close your eyes and taste Butt's Karhai and almost feel your tongue scald when you take a bite of Gulab Jamun dripping with hot Sheera. But was it ever real? Or is this just primed romanticism, I sit here and wonder, some five thousand four hundred miles away." Masa Sih???? Environmental degradation reduces the environmental capacity to meet social and ecological needs of societies, which is exacerbated by natural hazards and extreme climate events, and often intensify existing vulnerabilities. Marginalized groups in cities, particularly women and poor, are disproportionately at risk to face negative consequences of such environmental stressors. To better understand relationship between women empowerment and environmental degradation in cities, researchers Ammar Malik and Amit Patel surveyed 1,199 households in 12 informal settlements of New Delhi (India), Dhaka (Bangladesh), and Islamabad and Lahore (Pakistan). Today on CID’s Speaker Series podcast, Ghazi Mirza, student at the Harvard Graduate School of Education, interviews Ammar Malik and Amit Patel, who tested several linkages between empowerment and measures of environmental degradation and found many significant associations. CGP Director of Governance in Muslim-Majority States, Dr. Kamran Bokhari speaks with Dr. Moeed Yusuf, Associate Vice President of the Asia Center at the United States Institute of Peace, about the unprecedented escalation in the conflict between India and Pakistan. Yusuf, author of “Brokering Peace in Nuclear Environments: U.S. Crisis Management in South Asia,” notes that the ebb and flow of tensions between the two South Asian rivals is nothing new. The last true paradigm shift between India and Pakistan, Yusuf says, was with the advent of nuclear weapons. Since 1998 the two countries have continually tested each other’s limits while remaining below the nuclear threshold. Responses to recent attacks have included the use of air power. Yusuf notes that a land incursion between India and Pakistan could lead to rapid escalation because the border region is so heavily populated. For instance, he says, about 5 kilometers from the border is Lahore -- Pakistan’s second-largest city. Airstrikes are less risky, because they can target relatively isolated areas and serve as symbolic actions. The tensions between India and Pakistan have created fertile ground for terrorist organizations, Yusuf says. Groups such as Daesh, al Qaeda, Jaish-e-Mohammed or other Kashmiri militant outfits could seize this moment to build momentum even as Pakistan faces continuing pressure to move terrorists out of its territory. Pakistan has a terrible reputation globally, Yusuf says, and the only way to clear it is to deal with terrorist groups operating on Pakistani soil. In the meantime, Yusuf says it is important for India and Pakistan to stop using third parties to resolve issues and begin holding direct strategic discussions with each other. He notes that in the early 2000s, the United States helped the two countries craft a peace plan, and peace was nearly achieved when the Mumbai attacks occurred. The best way to get India and Pakistan to talk to each other directly, Yusuf says, is for a third party to facilitate direct talks and then back out of the process, leaving the traditional rivals to talk with each other.

Pastor Saeed Zahid has a mission to help all of those who have lost their homes (and lives) in the city of Lahore Pakistan and other areas due to terrorist activity. Last year if we remember Hillary Clinton went on Pakistani TV to denounce a film believed by Muslims to defame Islam-re-affirming American commitment to the tolerance of religion. The day was marked with violence. Recently, the city of Lahore has suffered an attack in which 178 lost their lives and many houses were burned. Pastor is calling for our help around the world. He is chairman of Christian Welfare Trust http://www.cwt-vision.com/home.htm . We are calling for your prayers. Dr Aasim Yusuf talks to ecancer at the 2012 National Cancer Institute Directors Meeting in Lyon about the current state of cancer care in Pakistan. The large differences in cancer care in Pakistan compared to the United Kingdom and the United states revolve around the focus on primary care rather than diagnostics. At the moment the large majority of hospitals do not have the facilities or the trained staff to handle the increasing number of cancer cases each year. As Pakistan’s life expectancy has risen in the past decades from 35 to 65, more and more cases present with only around 150-trained oncologist for the whole of the country. Dr Yusuf advises that to tackle the situation there must be a push in training in vital areas like diagnostics.
