Ever wish there was a cheat sheet on exactly what to look for in your employees? Fred Meyers has cracked the code on how to hire, develop, and retain great team members. As the founder of Queensboro, Fred is an early pioneer and 40+ year veteran of the custom logo apparel business, selling directly to small and medium-sized businesses. As technology evolved, from 800 numbers and fax machines to personal computers, the internet, and mobile devices, Fred navigated each marketing shift. From small print ads and direct mail to catalogs and digital campaigns, he adapted using custom-built software, often developed on tight budgets. The 4P System A few years after recovering from the 2008 recession, Fred had a realization that to build a truly great company, he needed a great team. From that moment on, building and developing his team has been the highest priority. He realized that great employees had four characteristics in common: what he calls the 4P's. The first P is for productivity: the person can do their job, and they have the basic skills. The second is that they're positive and bring good energy to the group. They're easy to communicate with. The key to communication is trust. It's not just about what they say, but their actions too. The next P is for principled, which is how they engage with others. Do they treat other people the way they want to be treated? The final P is for proactive: they're always seeking to improve and take responsibility for whatever comes across their path. They have a growth mindset and love learning. Recruiting based on the 4P's has led to a compassionate, non-traditional group of people on Fred's team. Instead of looking at where someone went to college or what credentials they have, they hire based on what kind of person they are. Enjoy this episode with Fred Meyers… Soundbytes 8:27-8:51 “I've always seen the way people have their favorite articles of clothing, the favorite garments, you know, and they the way they feel about these, these pieces of clothing, are far greater than what they should based on the fact that it's some cotton, it's a couple of buttons, maybe a little bit of color. But there's some magic that goes on there, and I saw potential for that magic.” 18:27-18:56 “Why aren't we doing better? Why aren't we doing better? And I'm on lap 50, and I think I was 50 at the time when it happened, and just thinking about that too, and I hit the wall, and I said, Ah, we're not doing better because we're not better. We're actually performing to our level of ability.” 39:21-39:38 “We've got a lot of really compassionate and somewhat nontraditional people here, because we're not looking as much for credentials or where do you go to college, that kind of thing. But what's in your heart?” Quotes “I try to model the way I lead and be a boss based on the environment that I would want to work in.” “You're doing as good as you should be doing, so how do you do better?” “We're not looking as much for credentials or where you went to college, but what's in your heart?” Links mentioned in this episode: From Our Guest Website: https://www.queensboro.com/ Connect with Fred Meyers on LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/fred-meyers-12250b3/ Connect with brandiD Download our free guide to learn 16 crucial website updates that attract more leads and convert visitors into clients: https://thebrandid.com/website-tweaks/ Ready to elevate your digital presence with a powerful brand or website? We're going to bring you an inside look into a local apparel maker turned investment holding firm. Founded in 1951, Sing Lun started as a textile trading firm along Circular Road and has seen its business transform over the decades. For one thing, the firm expanded into apparel manufacturing in 1968 when the second generation owners took over. Over the years, Sing Lun evolved to become the manufacturer for top outdoor and sportswear brands such as The North Face, Puma and Under Armour. And its annual revenue – a whopping US$185 million as at 2016. But as people say, change is the only constant, and Sing Lun has yet changed once again. It merged its textile manufacturing business SL Global with Crystal International Group in Hong Kong in 2016 to become the second largest apparel manufacturer in the world. Today, Sing Lun Holdings is known as a privately-owned investment holding company with business interests worldwide. Its portfolio includes three main verticals: real estate holdings, industrial and business services and investments and private equity. But what were the reasons behind the move to divest SL Global and what does the divestment of its apparel manufacturing mean for the firm? What is the firm focusing on next? On Under the Radar, The Evening Runway's finance presenter Chua Tian Tian posed these questions to Mark Lee, CEO, Sing Lun Holdings.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When it comes to growing your customization business we often talk about 'finding a niche.' What is a product / customer that you can focus on. This could be new moms, or local small businesses or tourists. However, you will find a point where growing that business becomes harder. This is why you will find a candle company that starts selling soaps, or why Bath and Body works sells 99 different ways to make your house smell good.Diversifying your product lines is a great way to level up your business and make more moneyYou can sell to current customersYou can find a new customer baseYou can become more stable (as one product line slows down, another might grow)Types of business diversificationProduct diversification: you primarily sell clothing but you want to expand into other items that will create value for your customer like home goods and accessoriesMarket diversification: you have a local business and start selling online or you open a new location across townIndustry diversification: take you knowledge to a different industry or target a new nicheService diversification: you may only offer finished products, but may want to start doing training on how to make those productsMerge or Acquire: a business that has a different product, service, market or industryWhy you would want to diversify:Want more revenue.Core business is in decline or getting saturated.Less economic riskIncrease competitiveness – offer a wider range of products to attract new customers and reach new markets that competitors can't or don'tExamples:Amazon used to be an online bookseller, then moved on to sell video games and other multi-media and before long, they sold computer electronics, software, homeware, toys, and moreApple was on the verge of bankruptcy in the 90's and launched the iPod and iTunes software and a few years later the iPhoneSteps to Diversify:Do your research – have your customers suggested diversifying? Are they asking for more products or services? What can you do better than your competitors in your current or new markets? What type of diversification would suit your business?Assess your risks – while diversifying can help generate sales and increase your market share, you have to find a crucial balance between finding the time and resources to focus on the new venture without neglecting your core business. Diversifying with similar products in a familiar market may carry less risk than developing a brand new product for an unknown market, but both would create a safety net which will allow you to recover if one of your products or services fails.Audit your resources – what do you have and what do you need to invest inPlan – in many ways it is like starting a new business. You will need to understand your new market, your customers, competitors, and the new dynamics just as you would for any new business*What does your equipment do?**You have an embroidery machine. a) Do you sell hats? b) Patches? c) Uniforms? You have a DigitalHeat FX printer? a) Ever used hard surface paper? b) Printed on cardstock?*What adjacent equipment you can add?**If you have a a sublimation printer, adding a hat press is an easy upgradeIf you do digitalheat fx, might be good to ad a sub printer or a cutterIf you do embroidery, going to a cutter and press.

Tori sits down with Susan Hess, Founder and Head Designer at Golftini, a luxury brand of fashionable and functional women's golf apparel. Listen in as Susan looks back on starting Golftini in 2004, motivated by her own annoyance that women's golf wear at the time was either functional or fashionable, but never both! The first skort she ever designed, for herself, instantly caught the attention of the other women at her club, and for the next year she made and sold product to her peers with no intention to make a “real” business out of it. That was until she was invited to set up a booth at a PGA Tour a year later in 2005. She went home with a $70,000 check, and she never looked back. Susan shares how she learned the ropes of business ownership, gaining almost all of it from practical experience in the trenches day by day as the brand grew. And the name “Golftini”? She says it came to her almost on a whim amid the martini craze in mid-2000s New York. She wrote the name, along with the martini logo, down on a napkin, and it stuck! Key Moments ● (32:03) Susan talks about her Spring and Fall lines and what to expect in upcoming seasons. ● (39:13) Learn which skort lengths Golfini offers and what length to expect based on your size. ● (41:44) What does Golftini offer tennis and pickleball players? ● (44:14) Susan explains what makes Golftini products so high-quality and long-lasting. ● (46:48) Why is women's golf apparel so expensive, and why aren't there larger sizes? ● (54:07) Susan shares why there are currently no plans to go exclusively ecommerce. ● (56:10) What would Susan tell her 2004 self, and to other moms? Sewn products manufacturers box themselves into thinking they are "pants manufacturers," or "dress manufacturers," or "shirt manufacturers." The reality is that most products require similar processes, people, and equipment to manufacture.Clothing businesses in Canada must be versatile manufacturers, due to the relatively small population size spread across a large geographical area. This requires innovative process engineering to adapt the same people and machinery to whatever the next order requires. There is no room to waste time, talent, or material. In this episode, Ram Sareen shares how to make changes to your apparel production processes that will produce measurable and visible results:✓ ZERO buffers✓ ZERO pre-inspection of fabric,✓ ZERO fabric relaxation✓ ZERO ticketingTukatalks is the show where fashion industry experts share what NOT to do.NOTE:This episode of Tukatalks discusses how the use of technology eliminates processes in apparel manufacturing. Post in comments section of this video!About This Video:In this episode of Apparel Success, Rob talks about how print on demand isn't for every type of apparel business. The print on demand t-shirt business is great for social media influencers looking to monetize their audience with a Shopify merch store. Otherwise, print on demand in 2022 still comes with delayed shipping times, limited product options and lower margins. If looking to run a private label clothing brand with long term customer base, then print on demand may provide you with some negative consequences.
Demand manufacturing doesn't have to mean "made-to-order," or "small batch." Rather, keeping inventory digital until a customer order comes through actually allows fashion businesses to offer MORE options (colors, sizes, etc.) for their products, without maintaining physical inventory.Ram Sareen explains how attention to fit inspired the concept of demand manufacturing in the apparel industry back in 2012.EPISODE LINKS:Ram Sareen's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tukatech/Ram Sareen's Twitter: https://twitter.com/RamKSareen1CONNECT:- YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/TUKATALKS- Twitter: https://twitter.com/tukatalks- LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/showcase/372...- Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/tukatalks/- Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tukatalks/#fashionpodcast #fashiontechnology #whatNOTtodo
In this week's episode of Latina Lifestyle Legacy, Reyna and Ashley sit and chat with the owner of Chingona Inc. A clothing apparel business that was created to celebrate the chingona and spanglish culture. Viridiana felt that there was no brands out there that she could fully relate to, so she created her own. The journey of creating her own brand, started with her wanting to purchase a sticker that said, "Chingona", and when she didn't find one she liked, she created her own. Her experience with graphic design allowed her to create the sticker she wanted and she was able to upload it online for herself to purchase. Her well thought out designs have been noticed by many people, which allows her to now be her own boss and work for herself and have the freedom to create designs she likes. She created a Loteria game for all the many women out there, so they can feel represented as well. Like many business owners, she battled some limiting beliefs of not being good enough and shares what she does for herself when she has those thoughts come up. For many fashion businesses, MRP simply means calculating approximately how much fabric is required, adding a margin on top of that, then booking the fabric order. Marker making is seen as a parallel, but separate process, and little thought is given to the handling of the fabric in the cutting room.Instead, apparel companies should have a dedicated person whose sole responsibility is managing materials from planning to cutting. With proper implementation, your Materials Manager could save your business 5% or more in fabric utilization.Tukatalks is the show where fashion industry experts share what NOT to do.EPISODE LINKS:Ram Sareen's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/tukatech/Ram Sareen's Twitter: https://twitter.com/RamKSareen1CONNECT:- YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/TUKATALKS- Twitter: https://twitter.com/tukatalks- LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/showcase/372...- Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/tukatalks/- Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tukatalks/#fashionpodcast #fashiontechnology #whatNOTtodo

For all the new technologies and buzzwords in the fashion industry, there are still too many samples and garments being made and later thrown away. Maybe an apparel business has implemented technology, but does that mean that they are really being innovative?Ram Sareen breaks down the difference between "renovating" an apparel business model and actually "innovating" with a new paradigm. Today on the podcast we are joined by Rémi Clermont - founder of Café du Cycliste: a premium cycling apparel company, designed in France and built for road cyclists and beyond. Remi started Café du Cycliste on a belief that cycling can make us happy and not all cyclists wanted to look like pro cyclists. This is not a neat entrepreneurial story. Leaving a job in marketing at an IT firm, he went all in - only to find that he had to turn it back into a side project for a year while the brand gained momentum.Cafe Du Cycliste then became a full time business - opening a concept store in Nice, and then a store in London and in Majorca. They have since been recognised as one of the fastest growing French companies for three years in a row, they have been featured in Vogue, Esquire and GQ and they have been stocked in fashion retailers like Mr Porter. This is a must listen if you're building fashion or e-commerce projects. We also discuss why being an outsider can be a competitive advantage, how to decide whether to be stocked in retailers, what is really required from an entrepreneur to succeed and whether starting your own business makes you feel more free.
