Are you smack dab in the middle of the Sandwich Years? That precarious time where you're squeezed between the demands of caring for aging parents and still supporting children? We're here for you, and we've got a friend to the show who is living it out in real time, sharing how she's getting through it all. Jenny Hutt was the host of the Just Jenny Show on Sirius XM and is now hosting her own daily podcast–all while dealing with the long-term care of her father (and his recent death) and the launching of her adult children out into the world. Jenny and Jen discuss unique issues relevant to the Sandwich Generation: Learning to re-calibrate your role as a parent in the lives of your newly “launched into the world” kids Dealing with unresolved parent/child issues that sometimes arise with the death of a parent Recognizing generational anxiety and equipping ourselves and our children with the tools to handle it The importance of relying on a strong network of family and friends to draw from during this time (not being afraid to ask for help).  Having the hard conversations with your parents about being prepared for their passing (and also making sure you're taking care of that for your children too) So whether you're managing being part of the sandwich generation right now, or you're mentally preparing yourself for it, or you know someone who is facing it head on, there's something for all of us to take away from this candid and vulnerable convo with Jen and Jenny. * * * Thank you to our sponsors! In this episode of our For the Love of the Middle series, renowned clinical psychologist Dr. Shefali returns to the show to discuss her concept of conscious parenting. Those of us in the middle of life who may still be parenting kids at home, or adjusting to parenting adult children who have just launched out into the world–or in any season of the parenting journey, really–will find much to learn as we look back (and forward) at our parenting patterns. Dr. Shefali provides a step-by-step roadmap to help free parents and their children from toxic patterns and expectations, while building a lasting meaningful bond with them. Using her book as a guide, she will introduce us to the five patterns of ego, show us some varying parenting styles (including helping Jen unpack her own parenting style), develop a mindful focus on self-control, and tips on how we can encourage our adult children to parent themselves. Jen and the good doctor will hit some big topics that will inform not only parents, but those of us who wish to discover how we were parented, and how it impacts us now; including:  Walking through the definition of conscious parenting and the three stages of the parenting map Debunking the notion that as parents we are supposed to create happy, perfect superhumans by following traditional parenting rules Dismissing the notion that there are good kids and bad kids—and how to avoid using these labels   Revealing the five ego patterns parents that parents might not even realize inform their quest to raise amazing children The three reasons why children act out or misbehave and how you can learn not to shame them for it The results of over-parenting and how it shows up in your adult children It's never too late to become a mindful parent and set an intention to allow your children to become centerstage in their own lives. * * * Thank you to our sponsors! They're just this unique combo and they defy labels.” - Dr. Shefali “The good girl taken to the extreme becomes self-sacrificial and she begins to lose her sense of self–it typically happens with girls. Then she's in her mid forties and she's like, ‘who am I?'” - Dr. Shefali  “Conscious parenting is not something you are, it's something you become.” - Dr. Shefali “Punishment, shaming, blaming is never sustainable. Infant and Early Childhood Mental Health: An Interview with Dr. Barbara Stroud Curt and Katie interview Dr. Barbara Stroud on infant and early childhood mental health. We explore what therapists need to know about working with very young children, including the latest brain science and the very earliest developmental stages. We talk about the importance of children being safe, seen, heard, and helped. We also look at the importance of culture and how to support under-resourced families.   Transcripts for this episode will be available at mtsgpodcast.com! An Interview with Dr. Barbara Stroud Barbara Stroud, PhD, is a licensed psychologist with over three decades worth of culturally informed clinical practice in early childhood development and mental health. She is a founding organizer and the inaugural president (2017-2019) of the California Association for Infant Mental Health, a ZERO TO THREE Fellow, and holds prestigious endorsements as an Infant and Family Mental Health Specialist/Reflective Practice Facilitator Mentor. In 2018 Dr. Stroud was honored with the Bruce D. Perry Spirit of the Child Award. Embedded in all of her trainings and consultations are the activities of reflective practice, demonstrating cultural attunement, and holding a social justice lens in the work. Dr. Stroud's book “How to Measure a Relationship” [published 2012] is improving infant mental health practices around the globe and is now available in Spanish. Her second book, an Amazon best seller, “Intentional Living: finding the inner peace to create successful relationships” walks the reader through a deeper understanding of how their brain influences relationships. Both volumes are currently available on Amazon. Additionally, Dr. Stroud is a contributing author to the text “Infant and early childhood mental health: Core concepts and clinical practice” edited by Kristie Brandt, Bruce Perry, Steve Seligman, & Ed Tronick. Dr. Stroud received her Ph.D. in Applied Developmental Psychology from Nova Southeastern University, and she has worked largely with children in urban communities with severe emotional disturbance.  Dr. Stroud's professional career path has allowed her to work across service delivery silos supporting professionals in mental health, early intervention (part c), child welfare, early care and education, family court staff, primary care, and other arenas. She is highly regarded and has been a key player in the inception and implementation of cutting-edge service delivery to children Prenatal to five and their families; her innovative approaches have won national awards. More specifically, Dr. Stroud is a former preschool director, a non-public school administrator, director of infant mental health services and agency training coordinator. She has held an adjunct faculty position at California State Long Beach and maintained a faculty position in the Infant-Parent Mental Health Fellowship for 12 years. Currently, Dr. Stroud's primary focus is professional training and private consultation from an anti-racist lens, with a focus on social justice, in the field of infant mental health. Dr. Stroud remains steadfast in her mission to ‘changing the world – one relationship at a time'.   In this podcast episode, we talk about mental health services for infants and young children Curt and Katie continue to identify gaps in typical therapist training. One such gap is working with children 0-5. We reached out to Dr. Barbara Stroud, expert in infant and early childhood to help us learn what therapists need to know about this age group.   What is infant and early childhood mental health? “What I often say to parents and providers is, it's our job to be the bigger cortex for the dysregulated midbrain. So, your little kid is not bad, they're not misbehaving, their dysregulated midbrain is doing the best it can. And we have to step in and be the cortex that holds that dysregulation and nurtures them through this process.” – Dr. Barbara Stroud Looking at big feelings and social and emotional development The current brain science that is impacting infant and early childhood mental health How adults impact infant developing brains What are the basics that therapists should know when working with children under 5 years old? The importance of dyadic therapy Parent training Social emotional developmental stages The damage of punishment on the development of an authentic self What infants need to love themselves, have healthy development “Let me give you something that I give parents and I give childcare providers and I give therapists as a way of thinking about one simple thing you can do and always remember that will support your child's social emotional health: keep them safe, make them feel seen, heard, and helped.” – Dr. Barbara Stroud Infants want to be safe, seen, heard, and helped Co-regulation and holding the big feeling with the child The impacts of this work on adults Transgenerational work – we treat the parent in the way that we would like the parent to treat the child How to support parents in healing their own wounds Therapy Interventions for infants and children under five years old Play therapy is complex and advanced and requires training and supervision Before children can think symbolically or have words, play is not effective Attunement and attachment work The impact of the pandemic on social emotional development Developmental delays seen in research of kids related to the pandemic The way children can catch up developmentally The impact of parents' stress responses on availability How the lack of interaction with age-mates impacts development The responses to stress based on these delays Cultural impacts on early childhood development Questions to ask about cultural and family traditions The stories to explore and the importance of stories and practices How to explore areas of inequity and disparities Understanding our power as professionals Interventions for families with very young children “We can take everyday tasks and turn them into not just nurturing moments, but therapeutic moments… take nurturing tasks that parents have to do already (it's already something they're going to do) and turn it into a therapeutic moment.” – Dr. Barbara Stroud Helping families to identify what they are able to do to make changes The importance of predictability for families with a lot of chaos How therapists without kids can work with parents How parenting is an individual journey The importance of loving kids and being emotionally available to kids   Our Generous Sponsor for this episode of the Modern Therapist's Survival Guide: Thrizer Thrizer is a new modern billing platform for therapists that was built on the belief that therapy should be accessible AND clinicians should earn what they are worth. Today's guest, Mercedes Samudio, is a licensed psychotherapist, parent coach, speaker, and bestselling author. She has started the hashtag #endparentshaming and coined the term ‘Shame Proof Parenting' in an effort to show parents that they are already great guides for their children to experience happy and healthy lives. During this episode, you will hear about Mercedes' non-traditional upbringing, which sparked her interest in child-parent relationships. She talks about the impossible standard of perfection for parents or children, how our lack of understanding results in parent shaming, and why it is so powerful to ask how a parent has developed their values and beliefs in order to have them reassess how they are parenting their children. We discuss the identity changes that occur when you become a parent and with each additional child, and Mercedes explains that the reason for parents becoming overly permissive or restrictive is not about bad parenting, but comes down to internalized beliefs from their own experiences. You'll also hear Mercedes' thoughts about managing screen time, and her reassuring belief that being a good parent is not about being perfect, but you should always be mindful. She explains how the past year has changed her perspective on technology usage and tells us what she often advises parents: it's about being intentional and not mindless about usage. Mercedes suggests using your child's preferred technology platforms to connect and spend time together, and describes how to set guidelines and offer your child alternatives. She urges listeners that being mindful about technology needs to be for the whole family, not just the kids, and recommends that you set benchmarks according to how your family uses technology, not how a coach says you should. Leveling the playing field with anti-racist practices is an essential element of modern parenting. She is an advocate for admitting what you don't know and then doing the research to educate yourself and your child. She also emphasizes the importance of modeling diversity in your own life in order to pass this principle along to your child. Mercedes reassures us that the goal is not to be perfect, but to be a full human and to show your child how to be a full human too. We hope you join us!Key Points From This Episode:Why it is important to acknowledge what you know and don't know. How she asks clients what they know about themselves in order to share with their family. Why you should take advantage of online resources to research and educate yourself. What she tells parents she works with: as you teach your child the basics of life, teach them the basics of body parts, cultures, and more. How you should be honest with your children about what you don't know. Modeling diversity in your own life before you teach your child about differences. Realizing what you are not modeling is an opportunity for you to change. Why it's not about being perfect, but being mindful about your own life. Why the goal is to be a full human and to show your child how to be a full human as well.Tweetables:“Just like with everything else I talk to parents about, you teach your child about their nose and their mouth, teach them about their body parts. During this mini conversation, she tells us about The Parental Identity Development model she has created that asks the question ‘how do you know what kind of parent you want to be?' through the lens of watching your child grow. Mercedes Samudio, LCSW is a parent coach, speaker, bestselling author, and founder of the Diversity in Parenting conference who helps parents and children communicate with each other, manage emotional trauma, navigate social media and technology together, and develop healthy parent-child relationships. She started the #EndParentShaming movement and coined the term Shame-Proof Parenting — using both to bring awareness to ending parent shame. Mercedes is on a mission to empower parents in believing in their innate ability to guide and raise healthy, happy children.    In this episode, Mercedes Samudio and I discuss: Mercedes and I go back about 4 years and we’ve witnessed transformations in one another. As I’ve watched Mercedes root into all that she is professionally today her message has stayed consistent, how she embodies and delivers that message, however, has deepened and matured. Her confidence has evolved as she’s shed layers of who she thought she was suppose to be to become who she is.  Her passion, wanting to help families, is deeply tied to her own healing and her ability to reconcile healing her inner child and how not being scared to discuss her own healing has enabled her to feel more connected to and assertive of her overall message. Healing our own inner children is a critical topic that seems to come up in every episode of this show. Dispelling the myth that once you become a parent you’re something/someone else. Parents come with their own internal struggles to heal their own childhoods and it floods back in parenthood and how we don’t tend to give parents the space to heal, which is the same space we heal intergenerational traumas.  Parenting Identity is all the stuff that comes with the term parenting that you’ve created and held throughout your life: the parents you had, the people you watched parent, what culture and research says about parenting, what society says about parenting… and why it’s so important to reckon with these messages. The ongoing struggle to sit with our own imperfections, to-do lists, navigate parenthood and hold it all everyday and how to manage the complexities of deepened awarenesses.  We’ve bought into the myth that parenting has to mean something and the guilt, shame and fear that comes with that.  Her book, Shame Proof Parenting, and the journey that writing the book has taken her on. There is no A-Z process of raising a human because there is no A-Z process to being a human. And how the book is starting to shift mindsets.  Representation — the parenting world is predominately made up of White women and many modern parenting methods require you to be a part of a culture that sees you. When BIPOC, Adoptive, LGBTQ and Special-Needs mothers try to enter popular modern parenting realms, she may be the only one there, and the only one in her family/community that’s doing it and it can be really difficult to continue on in a space where there is no one else there that looks like you/understands your struggle.  We talk about how frustration fueled Mercedes to create the Diversity in Parenting Conference and what the conference is all about: if you’re a parenting or mental health professionals who is looking for more skills in how to work with diverse parents and family populations.  Deeper messages about why representation matters to help everyone feel validated and seen.    RESOURCES: Find Mercedes at shameproofparenting.com  Learn more about the Diversity in Parenting conference September 13-14, 2019 in Anaheim, CA at diversityinparentingconference.com (early bird tickets available through March 2019). It’s time to reimagine therapy and what it means to be a therapist. We are human beings who can now present ourselves as whole people, with authenticity, purpose, and connection. Especially now, when therapists must develop a personal brand to market their practices. To support you as a whole person and a therapist, your hosts, Curt Widhalm and Katie Vernoy talk about how to approach the role of therapist in the modern age. In this episode we talk about: We reflect on our experiences during the conference as well as share perspectives from a wide array of participants and fellow exhibitors: Amelia Mosley, Amethyst Kianipur, Arlen Grajeda, Boonie Sripom, Felician Douville, Frances Robbins, Jennie Steinberg, Karin Matthews, Katrina Watkins, Kenneth Rudnicki, Khali Koetting, Mercedes Samudio, and Robyn D’Angelo, Amanda Schaeffer (Good Therapy), Anita Avedian (Anger Management 818), Dana Schwartz (Center for Discovery), Heather Potter (Thera-Link), Howard Spector (SimplePractice), Jo Muirhead, Nancy Milazzo (CAMFT), Nicol Stolar-Peterson (Therapist Court Prep), and Perry Rosenblum (Brighter Vision) Topics discussed: #ModernTherapistProblems #EvolveMore And how amazing and rejuvenating it can be to go to the Evolution of Psychotherapy Conference and connect with other clinicians!   Resources mentioned: We’ve pulled together any resources mentioned in this episode and put together some handy-dandy links. No specific resources this episode, but stay tuned because we have a couple more special episodes from this conference coming this week! Who we are: Curt Widhalm is a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist in private practice in the Los Angeles area. He is a Board Member at Large for the California Association of Marriage and Family Therapists, a Subject Matter Expert for the California Board of Behavioral Sciences, Adjunct Faculty at Pepperdine University, and a loving husband and father. He is 1/2 great person, 1/2 provocateur, and 1/2 geek, in that order. He dabbles in the dark art of making "dad jokes" and usually has a half-empty cup of coffee somewhere nearby. Katie Vernoy is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, coach, and consultant. As a helping professional for two decades, she’s navigated the ups and downs of our unique line of work. She’s run her own solo therapy practice, designed innovative clinical programs, built and managed large, thriving teams of service providers, and consulted hundreds of helping professionals on how to build meaningful AND sustainable practices. In her spare time, Katie is secretly siphoning off Curt's youthful energy, so that she can take over the world. A Quick Note: Our opinions are our own. We are only speaking for ourselves – except when we speak for each other, or over each other. We’re working on it. Our guests are also only speaking for themselves and have their own opinions. We aren’t trying to take their voice and no one speaks for us either. Mostly because they don’t want to, but hey.   Stay in Touch: www.mtsgpodcast.com https://www.facebook.com/therapyreimagined/ https://twitter.com/therapymovement https://www.instagram.com/therapyreimagined/   Credits: Voice Over by DW McCann https://www.facebook.com/McCannDW/ Music by Crystal Grooms Mangano http://www.crystalmangano.com/

Welcome to episode 85 of the Therapy Chat Podcast with host Laura Reagan, LCSW-C. In this week's episode, I’m delighted to welcome back the first ever guest of the podcast; Mercedes Samudio who speaks to me about parent shaming, how culture plays into what we view is ok and not ok and the need to help parents and not label them as bad people. Mercedes Samudio is a parent coach who supports parents and children to communicate with each other, manage emotional trauma, navigate social media and technology together, and develop healthy parent-child relationships. As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with a private parent coaching practice, Mercedes has worked with adoptive families, foster families, teen parents, parents navigating the child protective services system, and children living with mental illness. Mercedes seeks to empower parents to believe that they are already great guides for raising healthy and happy children. Being raised by someone who was not her biological mother (but who she called mom) really shaped how she saw myself, how she saw families, and how she saw parenting. And, it also put her on the path to figuring out how to support and heal families. Whether you are a biological parent or not, being in a family system is complicated. As she healed her own relationship with her mother (a relationship she talks about in her book), and as she began to work with more and more families professionally, she realized that so many parents crumble under the pressure of being shamed, not knowing if they’re doing this parenting thing right, and struggling to connect with themselves and their children. Mercedes Samudio LCSW is a parent coach who is changing the world with the End Parent Shaming movement. She is on a mission to inspire Shame Proof Parents and counter the way that feedback from other parents, extended family, schools, and organizations so often diminishes a parent’s own inner knowing about their kids.   When someone says “I’m failing my children,” it’s almost always because an external party is telling them they’re doing something wrong. The End Parent Shaming philosophy asks us to become aware of how we look at parents, understand that each parent has their own story, and step away from the deeply ingrained human propensity to judge others.   Mercedes introduces us to the idea a “parenting identity” and we talk about how it’s formed. “Shame” is a recurring word in this conversation. Mercedes credits Brene Brown for helping her frame how shame influences parents. There’s the external pressure to fit into boxes in order to look good in the moment rather than to understand one’s own parenting identity. We talk about how family therapist Terry Real’s work reveals that shame and grandiosity share the same energy. Both are reflections of contempt.   We dive into our relationship with technology as parents and as individuals. We talk about the “digital pacifier” and what is it like to parent in the digital age when we don’t have a village to support us. Mercedes challenges us to consider our kneejerk reaction to “technology bad.” Ultimately, it’s about looking at what we’re modeling and how we’re pacifying ourselves.   Mercedes bring us into her own origin story of why she’s passionate about ending parent shaming. She helps us see parents through a different lens so we’re able to understand where they’re coming from. Mercedes doesn’t have children and does not plan to. She does this work because she wants to speak for the children and fully understand their perspective. Drawing on Brene Brown’s use of Teddy Roosevelt speech about the arena. She is in the arena with her parents, but she is wearing a different armor and shield. She stands beside them, dedicated to understanding the perspective of the kids.   We close the conversation by examining what our role is out in the world when we’re bystanders. Helping parents build enough reserves to recover from being shamed. She doesn’t necessarily believe we can be shame-free, but we can be resilient if and when others do judge our parenting.   Mercedes’s brand new book, Shame Proof Parenting that was just launched this week! Mercedes Samudio, LCSW runs a practice and brand called The Parenting Skill. Over time, Mercedes realized she wanted to coach and empower her parents – she didn’t necessarily want to do therapy with them. Parents really need to learn how to connect with their child and still be a full human, while making sure that their children are safe, growing and developing. She helps parents learn their own unique skills. An important tool for Mercedes is empathy. She understands that each person is different and each parent will parent differently. “You don’t have to wait until you’re an expert, because each and every single one of us is technically an expert in understanding our perspective and our philosophies.” Another important tool that Mercedes has embraced is live video. Live videos allow her to show off her passion and show up as her genuine self. Being genuine helps others do the same, and it brings the clinician and the client to the same human level. Many of the problems that parents experience can be traced back to the expectations and shame associated with certain roles. Those norms create barriers to our own growth and the shame obscures our genuine self. Mercedes’s coaching can empower someone to overcome shame and limiting beliefs. Mercedes is working on a book titled Shame-Proof Parenting. It explores how to identify shame in your life, in your family and in your parenting, and what you can do to shame-proof your life. Family Confidential: Secrets of Successful Parenting with Annie Fox, M.Ed.

Parents are very tuned in to other parents. When we see something in public looks like "bad" parenting, our impulse to judge may be to strong to resist. But a snapshot of a situation doesn't often tell the whole story. You don't know what came before, and you don't know what's going to happen after. Rushing to judgment doesn't help child or parent. It takes a village to raise a child, but what's a concerned villager to do? "Instead of me assuming that (the parent under pressure) needs parenting help, and that I know what you need, it's better to say to come in with curiosity," says parent coach, Mercedes Samudio. "You might say to that parent, 'Hi. How are you doing? What do you need?' That gives the parent a chance to tell you what (if anything) he or she might need in the moment. And if you can help. Great!" Annie talks with Mercedes about ways to help other parents in need rather than rushing to judgement and parent shaming.
