You'd be hard-pressed to find a mother who hasn't experienced parent shaming or mom guilt. Today's guest, Mercedes Samudio, is a licensed psychotherapist, parent coach, speaker, and bestselling author. She has started the hashtag #endparentshaming and coined the term ‘Shame Proof Parenting' in an effort to show parents that they are already great guides for their children to experience happy and healthy lives. During this episode, you will hear about Mercedes' non-traditional upbringing, which sparked her interest in child-parent relationships. She talks about the impossible standard of perfection for parents or children, how our lack of understanding results in parent shaming, and why it is so powerful to ask how a parent has developed their values and beliefs in order to have them reassess how they are parenting their children. We discuss the identity changes that occur when you become a parent and with each additional child, and Mercedes explains that the reason for parents becoming overly permissive or restrictive is not about bad parenting, but comes down to internalized beliefs from their own experiences. You'll also hear Mercedes' thoughts about managing screen time, and her reassuring belief that being a good parent is not about being perfect, but you should always be mindful. We hope you join us to hear from this inspiring psychotherapist today!Key Points From This Episode:Why she believes the best way to provide a healthy environment for children is to stop shaming the people who are caring for them. How the standard of perfection for parents creates impossible standards for children. The Parental Identity Development Model that looks at what type of parent you want to be.How an identity shift happens every time you bring a new child into your parenting space. Why parent shaming occurs when we don't understand what it means to be a parent. How there is a disproportionate focus on the child, leaving parents unequipped. An example of a parent who felt fear about her teenage child expressing her womanhood because of an underlying fear of sexual assault. The power of asking how a parent came to have the values and beliefs that they have. Why parents becoming overly permissive or restrictive is not about bad parenting, but internalized beliefs from their own experiences.Identity changes that occur as your children's identities change. How seeing the world through your child's eyes is an opportunity to reparent yourself.Separating your parental identity from your identity as a whole to combat parent shaming. How a child acting out is not always a sign of ADHD or mental health, but often reflects what is going on with the family.Introducing your children to different cultures in order to raise non-racist kids. The power of telling your children you don't know the answer and researching it together. The goal of becoming a full human and showing your child how to be a full human as well.Links Mentioned in Today's Episode: Mercedes Samudio on LinkedInMercedes Samudio on InstagramShame Proof ParentingShame Proof ParentingMom, Slow Down!TMAC Fitness. 20 Minute Home Workouts Beginner and Advanced Workouts. Her confidence has evolved as she’s shed layers of who she thought she was suppose to be to become who she is.  Her passion, wanting to help families, is deeply tied to her own healing and her ability to reconcile healing her inner child and how not being scared to discuss her own healing has enabled her to feel more connected to and assertive of her overall message. Healing our own inner children is a critical topic that seems to come up in every episode of this show. Dispelling the myth that once you become a parent you’re something/someone else. Parents come with their own internal struggles to heal their own childhoods and it floods back in parenthood and how we don’t tend to give parents the space to heal, which is the same space we heal intergenerational traumas.  Parenting Identity is all the stuff that comes with the term parenting that you’ve created and held throughout your life: the parents you had, the people you watched parent, what culture and research says about parenting, what society says about parenting… and why it’s so important to reckon with these messages. The ongoing struggle to sit with our own imperfections, to-do lists, navigate parenthood and hold it all everyday and how to manage the complexities of deepened awarenesses.  We’ve bought into the myth that parenting has to mean something and the guilt, shame and fear that comes with that.  Her book, Shame Proof Parenting, and the journey that writing the book has taken her on. There is no A-Z process of raising a human because there is no A-Z process to being a human. And how the book is starting to shift mindsets.  Representation — the parenting world is predominately made up of White women and many modern parenting methods require you to be a part of a culture that sees you. When BIPOC, Adoptive, LGBTQ and Special-Needs mothers try to enter popular modern parenting realms, she may be the only one there, and the only one in her family/community that’s doing it and it can be really difficult to continue on in a space where there is no one else there that looks like you/understands your struggle.  We talk about how frustration fueled Mercedes to create the Diversity in Parenting Conference and what the conference is all about: if you’re a parenting or mental health professionals who is looking for more skills in how to work with diverse parents and family populations.  Deeper messages about why representation matters to help everyone feel validated and seen.    RESOURCES: Find Mercedes at shameproofparenting.com  Learn more about the Diversity in Parenting conference September 13-14, 2019 in Anaheim, CA at diversityinparentingconference.com (early bird tickets available through March 2019). Mercedes Samudio LCSW is a parent coach who is changing the world with the End Parent Shaming movement. She is on a mission to inspire Shame Proof Parents and counter the way that feedback from other parents, extended family, schools, and organizations so often diminishes a parent’s own inner knowing about their kids.   When someone says “I’m failing my children,” it’s almost always because an external party is telling them they’re doing something wrong. The End Parent Shaming philosophy asks us to become aware of how we look at parents, understand that each parent has their own story, and step away from the deeply ingrained human propensity to judge others.   Mercedes introduces us to the idea a “parenting identity” and we talk about how it’s formed. “Shame” is a recurring word in this conversation. Mercedes credits Brene Brown for helping her frame how shame influences parents. There’s the external pressure to fit into boxes in order to look good in the moment rather than to understand one’s own parenting identity. We talk about how family therapist Terry Real’s work reveals that shame and grandiosity share the same energy. Both are reflections of contempt.   We dive into our relationship with technology as parents and as individuals. We talk about the “digital pacifier” and what is it like to parent in the digital age when we don’t have a village to support us. Mercedes challenges us to consider our kneejerk reaction to “technology bad.” Ultimately, it’s about looking at what we’re modeling and how we’re pacifying ourselves.   Mercedes bring us into her own origin story of why she’s passionate about ending parent shaming. She helps us see parents through a different lens so we’re able to understand where they’re coming from. Mercedes doesn’t have children and does not plan to. She does this work because she wants to speak for the children and fully understand their perspective. Drawing on Brene Brown’s use of Teddy Roosevelt speech about the arena. She is in the arena with her parents, but she is wearing a different armor and shield. She stands beside them, dedicated to understanding the perspective of the kids.   We close the conversation by examining what our role is out in the world when we’re bystanders. Helping parents build enough reserves to recover from being shamed. She doesn’t necessarily believe we can be shame-free, but we can be resilient if and when others do judge our parenting.   Mercedes’s brand new book, Shame Proof Parenting that was just launched this week! Mercedes Samudio, LCSW runs a practice and brand called The Parenting Skill. Over time, Mercedes realized she wanted to coach and empower her parents – she didn’t necessarily want to do therapy with them. Parents really need to learn how to connect with their child and still be a full human, while making sure that their children are safe, growing and developing. She helps parents learn their own unique skills. An important tool for Mercedes is empathy. She understands that each person is different and each parent will parent differently. “You don’t have to wait until you’re an expert, because each and every single one of us is technically an expert in understanding our perspective and our philosophies.” Another important tool that Mercedes has embraced is live video. Live videos allow her to show off her passion and show up as her genuine self. Being genuine helps others do the same, and it brings the clinician and the client to the same human level. Many of the problems that parents experience can be traced back to the expectations and shame associated with certain roles. Those norms create barriers to our own growth and the shame obscures our genuine self. Mercedes’s coaching can empower someone to overcome shame and limiting beliefs. Mercedes is working on a book titled Shame-Proof Parenting. It explores how to identify shame in your life, in your family and in your parenting, and what you can do to shame-proof your life.
