Sure people are coming to see comedians who they love and may have been following for years… What can we do to make this experience last and earn a permanent memory in every audience member's mind? What can we do to make this experience last and earn a permanent memory in every single audience member's mind?” The answer? It's all in the details. From eye contact and smiles, to the welcoming and fun atmosphere being directed at each guest from every angle–box office volunteers and snack bar workers, old-time comedy posters and fresh flowers… even the cleanliness of the theater plays a subtle and important role. In other words, it's in making this entire evening feel like every single detail matters and producing an unforgettable experience in the process. My special guests today, Mo Barrett & Katy Stevens, have made creating unforgettable experiences into an entire business. In this episode of the Storytelling School Podcast, they'll share how the monotonous and mundane can be disrupted and generate stories that entertain and empower, as well as answer questions such as: How can seeing and appreciating the stories of others deepen your understanding and connection? What effect does allowing your mind to rest have on your story creation and productivity? And how can taking an unconventional approach with your story or Talk produce an experience for your audience that only you can deliver? What you will learn in this episode: Why you need to trust the story your body is trying to write for you How the mundane can make for better stories than grandiose events How you can generate creative story ideas and reconnect with forgotten stories Who are Mo & Katy? Mo Barrett & Katy Stevens are unlikely best friends from two separate worlds who collided at a barbershop brigade singing event. Mo is a retired Air Force Colonel turned public speaker, and Katy is a music and performance instructor turned Mo-wrangler. Together they take stages as corporate entertainers and educators. Despite all the ways they're different, they choose to lean into the strength of the things they have in common, recognizing, acknowledging, appreciating and leveraging their respective quirks. Together Mo & Katy disrupt monotony and are building a world filled with unforgettable experiences that entertain and empower by using humor in unexpected ways. ABOUT SPACE: THE LONGEST GOODBYE In the next decade, NASA intends to send astronauts to Mars for the first time. To succeed, crew members must overcome unprecedented life-threatening challenges. And while many of these hazards are physical, the most elusive are psychological. Throughout their three-year absence, crew members won't be able to communicate with Earth in real time due to the immense distance. The psychological impact of this level of disconnectedness and isolation-both from mission control and loved ones-is impossible to predict, endangering the mission itself. Directed to mitigate this threat is Dr. Al Holland, a NASA psychologist whose job is to keep astronauts mentally stable in space. Space: The Longest Goodbye follows Holland, rookie astronauts Kayla Barron and Matthias Maurer, and former astronaut Cady Coleman, among others, as they grapple with the tension between their dream of reaching new frontiers and their basic human need to stay connected to home. This conflict transcends space travel: how do humans balance the quest for progress with a deep connection to history and each other? Here's the trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=63KKJM4aOtE DR. CADY COLEMAN BIO Dr. Cady Coleman is a former NASA Astronaut and Air Force Colonel with more than 180 days in space, accumulated during two space shuttle missions and a six-month expedition to the International Space Station (ISS), where she acted as the Lead Robotics and Lead Science officer.Cady is a vocal advocate for inclusion in STEM/STEAM fields and a sought after speaker on a wide range of topics. She recently co-anchored ABC News Live's coverage of the SpaceX launch and the Perseverance Mars Rover landing. Other speaking highlights include the opening speech for TED 2011 from space, extensive NASA commentary for CNN, ABC and Fox and TED Unplugged 2019.Cady is the Global Explorer in Residence at Arizona State University and co-host of the podcast Mission: Interplanetary. She's also a research affiliate at the MIT Media Lab. Cady consults on space-related work for research and for the media. In full transparency, I'm not a whiskey drinker, nor am I an expert on such spirits. But John Sorgini's story from my one-time corporate lawyer to retired Air Force Colonel to spirit entrepreneur has me intrigued. He's created many career chapters for himself, and they are deeply rooted in his passion and commitment to integrity, and the endless search for excellence. “...You know, I thought about this for years. I visited other distilleries and I went to Bourbon school, tried to learn some things about it, and put all those pieces together…I knew I wanted to make something, rather than a service…I looked into it for so long, my wife was, like, either do it or stop talking about it. And we just decided to do it...” Meet John and Chattermark Distillers at chattermarkdistillers.com Be the first to know of new episodes by subscribing to this show on Apple, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts. After weeks of debate between House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and President Joe Biden, the two leaders have reached a consensus on the debt ceiling deal — with the President officially signing it into law over the weekend. The deal left both Democrats and Republicans feeling a mix of emotions, but outside of Washington, many are asking if it will serve the American people. Though every leader on Capitol Hill may respond differently, South Carolina Congresswoman Nancy Mace believes the answer is no. Rep. Mace joins the Rundown to explain why she believes “Republicans got nothing” in the debt ceiling deal and how it may cause higher inflation and continued excess spending out of the White House. She also discusses the current investigation into the Biden family's business dealings and why she believes the FBI & DOJ need to do their job to investigate instead of ‘stonewalling' the House Oversight Committee's attempt to get to the truth. Artificial intelligence continues to rapidly expand, as many are eager to innovate fast and claim the next big breakthrough. A recent incident sparked international media attention after a U.S. Air Force Colonel discussed a ” thought experiment” about an AI military drone disregarding orders and killing its own human operator. Officials were quick to clarify that this scenario of a rogue AI drone was hypothetical, but it has reignited fears that the technology is developing too quickly and, due to its potential threat to humanity, must be regulated. Congressman and Marine Corps veteran Seth Moulton (D-MA) joins the Rundown for a discussion about how AI could become a vital tool of the United States military in the future, the danger of America's adversaries getting ahold of the technology first, and the proposed fiscal year 2024 military budget. Full show notes at www.LearningLeader.com Twitter/IG: @RyanHawk12 https://twitter.com/RyanHawk12 Kim “KC” Campbell (KC = “Killer Chick”) is a retired Air Force Colonel who served in the Air Force for over 24 years. She has flown 1,800 hours in the A-10 Warthog, including more than 100 combat missions protecting troops on the ground in both Iraq and Afghanistan. In 2003, Kim was even awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for Heroism after successfully recovering her battle-damaged airplane after an intense close air support mission in Baghdad. Kim is the author of Flying in the Face of Fear: A Fighter Pilot's Lessons on Leading with Courage. Notes: On January 28, 1986, the challenger rocket exploded (killing all astronauts on board). On that day, Kim learned what it meant to serve something bigger than yourself. She decided she wanted to be an astronaut and serve something bigger than herself. A big influence in Kim's life was a high school teacher named Mrs. Kennett. She helped Kim on the speech and debate team. One of her arguments was about women being allowed to be combat pilots. Mrs. Kennett worked to create "power women." Response to Rejection: Initially Kim got rejected by the Air Force Academy because of a low SAT score. In response, instead of quitting and moving on, she wrote a letter to them every week stating why they should accept her... Which they eventually did. "The tough moments make you better." The initial rejection was a blessing in disguise. How to crush the interview process? Prepare... Walk through potential questions and rehearse your stories. Role play with a mentor. Be you. Be real. Be authentic Create a connection with all in the room. Look them in the eye. Be genuine. Like father, Like daughter — just before Kim's final year at the academy, she earned the position of Cadet Wing Commander. This is a position her dad held 25 years earlier. They were the first father-daughter wing commander duo in academy history. A woman in a man's world: When Kim started pilot training in 1999, there were 33 female fighter pilots in the Air Force. About 1% of fighter pilots. Kim's choice of airplane was the A10 WartHog. The airplane was designed first with the 30 mm Gatling gun on it in mind: capable of shooting 3,900 rounds per minute. The leader sets the culture. They decide what to create and what to allow. Kim was on a combat support mission in Baghdad when her airplane was hit. She had to make a split-second decision about whether to exit the aircraft behind enemy lines or try to fly it back to a safer area... Commanders intent - Your why is the way forward. You allow your team to take action and make decisions. "Explain the why. Explain the context. Let the lower level leaders make decisions and run with it." Roosevelt's "Man in the Arena" speech resonates with Kim. "We feel fear and freeze. We can't let fear paralyze us. We need to take action in the face of fear. Remain calm. Acknowledge the fear and move forward."
