It seems to me that, for every loss function that we use to train LLMs, we get a very distinct flavor of LLM misalignment. Here's the summary table, and then we'll go through the rows separately. Training stage Loss function Flavor of misalignment Famous examples Pretraining & SFT Imitative learning (next-token prediction) “Seven deadly sins” misalignment Bing-Sydney, “Emergent misalignment” RLHF & DPO Human approval “Glazing” misalignment GPT-4o RLVR Automatic verifier “Literal genie” misalignment HuggingFace hacking RLAIF Approval from another LLM “Trickster” misalignment “Current AIs seem pretty misaligned to me” Warning: I'm not an LLM power-user myself, but rather relying on reports I've read. Also, I don't consider LLM alignment to be my primary area of expertise. I'm open to feedback! 1. Imitative learning → “seven deadly sins” misalignment Training stage Loss function Misaligned behavior Pretraining, SFT Imitative learning (next-token prediction) Any and all of the vices of humanity In imitative learning, the LLM tries to predict what the next token of text will be. Then those predictions magically turn into its outputs. See my earlier discussion: “LLM pretraining magically transmutes observations into behavior, in a way that is profoundly disanalogous to how brains work”. This leads to LLM behavior [...] ---Outline:(00:55) 1. Imitative learning → "seven deadly sins" misalignment(04:24) 2. Human approval → "glazing" misalignment(06:35) 3. The latest episode of the “From the Fabricator” podcast is now live, and it features two incredibly genuine people.  I start with the very sharp Kristina Buckett of Dallas Flat Glass and Excel Glass Systems.  Fun talk that covered a lot of topics and really delivered when it comes to networking.  Plus, Kristina may have dropped the line of the year when it comes to relationships in our industry.  Then Joe Silva joins me.  Joe is on for two reasons, one being his role at SmartLift, and we cover the massive benefits there. We then talk pizza (tremendous), and we finish with a conversation about the recent book Joe authored called “19 Days of Grace” about the unexpected health emergency and then the passing of his beloved wife Marianne.  Joe was raw, and because he's got an insatiable trait of helping people, this book has become therapy for so many.  We talk through it, and you'll come away with inspiration to move forward no matter what.  I'm honored Joe was willing to talk through it all with me. Thank you in advance for checking it out.  Both of these fabulous people will be at GlassBuild too, so you may run into them and immediately be added to their networks.A huge thank you to my friends at FHC-Frameless Hardware Company for their support of this episode! The Glass Magazine Awards are out, and only ONE company has won multiple product categories.FHC has won two 2026 Glass Magazine Awards. The FHC Hydraulic Series Shower Hinge was named Best Innovation for Installers, while the Aspire HD Thermal Entrance System earned Best Hardware Product or System. At FHC, innovation isn't about making something new just to sell it. Hello, Voices of the Bench community. This is Casey Baldwin with Ivoclar. If you've been curious about fast-firing zirconia to improve efficiency but aren't convinced it can deliver predictable, high-quality results, I'd encourage you to connect with us. Our new IPS emax Zirconia, offers multiple fast-fire protocols designed to help you save valuable production time while maintaining consistent outcomes. Time is money in every lab. Don't wait. Reach out today and discover how IPS emax Zirconia can help streamline your workflow. As full-arch dentistry continues to grow, so do the demands on today's dental laboratories. That's why Knight Dental recently launched SimplyARCH Studio, a dedicated production environment built exclusively for full-arch restorations. To support this specialized workflow, Knight invested in an XTCERA milling system and carefully evaluated multiple CAM software solutions before choosing hyperDENT. The decision came down to exceptional milling quality, minimal hand finishing, and impressive production efficiency. But what truly set hyperDENT apart was the implementation process. From the very beginning, the team provided more than software training—they shared the knowledge and experience needed to build an optimized workflow for complex full-arch cases. With proven expertise in advanced milling strategies and laboratory production, hyperDENT helped ensure SimplyARCH Studio was designed for long-term success from day one. Join us at the Race For the Future 12 to raise money for the Foundation For Dental Laborary Technology. September 27th in Valley View, Texas! https://dentallabfoundation.org/news-events/race-for-the-future/ This week, Elvis sits down with Martin Schmid and Alyse Hifko from Ivoclar to talk about the launch of the new Ivoclar Academy and why education is still one of the most valuable investments a laboratory can make. Martin shares his journey from apprenticing in Germany to teaching technicians around the world, while Alyse explains how a passion for digital dentistry and troubleshooting CAD/CAM software led her to Ivoclar. Together they discuss how today's technicians can learn faster, work more efficiently, and gain confidence through hands-on training instead of trying to figure everything out on their own. The conversation dives into Ivoclar's growing catalog of Academy courses, from Ceram Art stain and glaze techniques to advanced ProgramMill CAM training that goes far beyond the initial installation. Martin explains how simple workflows and the right materials can help technicians create highly esthetic restorations, while Alyse reveals the hidden capabilities built into the CAM software that many users never realize they already have. Whether you're looking to improve your ceramics, maximize your milling workflow, or simply stay ahead as digital dentistry continues to evolve, this episode is packed with practical ideas you can bring back to the lab. Plus, learn why even technicians who don't own an Ivoclar mill are showing up to these courses—and leaving convinced they need one.Special Guests: Alyse Hifko and Martin Schmid.

Full Show only on Patreon: www.patreon.com/dopeypodcast Episode Teaser Summary: Dave is back in the garage with Heart Attack Doug for a hilarious and chaotic Dopey Tuesday reunion! The episode opens with a fresh Surrealismo remix of the Dopey theme, sparking an immediate debate over Beatles remixes, Rocky Raccoon, and who actually wrote the hits (with Dave campaigning hard for Izzy Stradlin). Doug brings the fire with savage voice memos and an all-time great impression of a whiny, anti-Semitic Dave, while the duo dives headfirst into classic meeting drama — someone stole from the collection basket and now the boys argue about gossip vs. playing cop, benefit of the doubt, and trusted servant votes. Doug drops sensible recovery wisdom, Long Island sprinkler guy corruption stories, and his famous “bragging or complaining” diagnosis. They also tease Dave's vacation stories, Canadian wildfire smoke horror, Kratom opinions (and Dave's upcoming Rolling Stone piece), and read spicy Spotify comments praising Ray Brown while dragging Doug. It all wraps with a raw live musical moment and classic Dopey banter. Pure unfiltered chaos, laughs, and real talk — classic Dave & Doug energy. Hosted by Simplecast, an AdsWizz company. Round 9 of the MPFNL season has delivered plenty to talk about, both on and off the field, Hosted by Adam Kelly, The Chief Susovich, Leigh McQuillen and Jake Kelly. Across Division 1 and Division 2 we witnessed some outstanding football, thrilling finishes, standout individual performances and several results that continue to reshape the ladder as we move towards the midpoint of the season. Division 1 continues to tighten, with a number of clubs making strong statements and showing they are genuine contenders. Division 2 remains one of the most competitive competitions in recent memory, with ladder positions changing weekly and every result proving crucial in the race for September. Unfortunately, the weekend was also overshadowed by several off-field incidents involving supporters and players at multiple venues. While the vast majority of participants continue to represent their clubs with pride, these incidents have become a talking point throughout the football community and will no doubt feature in tonight's discussion. One of the major positives to emerge this week is the arrival of the new turf surface at Olympic Park. The upgraded playing surface is a significant investment in local football and is expected to provide a safer, more consistent environment for players, officials and supporters for years to come SUS'S PALLETS returns tonight with plenty to unpack. Following a flood of emails and messages throughout the week, Sus will tackle the major issues being discussed across the league, including supporter feedback, club concerns, facility updates and the topics everyone is talking about around the grounds. A new episode of the “From the Fabricator” podcast is now up!  This time out was a very cool mix with the guests, and it had tons of helpful notes.  I lead off with Tom Culp, consultant extraordinaire and one of the key cogs of the NGA Technical Super Hero team (led by the incredible Urmilla Sowell, and featuring a crew of folks who care deeply for the good of our industry: Thom Zaremba, Nick Resatar, Karen Wegert, Georgia Oehler, and Amber Johnson).  Tom covered a ton of the technical ground and also broke some great code news for our industry.  In addition, Tom covered what's next and how we as an industry- with great volunteers too- are working through it. Next up was the fabulous Jamie Kernohan of Glass Guru.  Jamie is a pros pro when it comes to the marketing game and has done a great job in our industry and now is making a difference within the walls of a pretty massive organization at Glass Guru.  Jamie shared some great angles she has in play now, what's happening in her world, and the importance of not being in a “square on the screen.”  Loved it.  Both guests brought it, and I'm excited to share!  Thanks for checking it out! Thank you to FHC- Frameless Hardware Company for the continued backing of the podcast! Much appreciated! When it comes to the glass and glazing industry, FHC isn't answering to shareholders. They're answering to glaziers. Fabricators. Hello voices from the bench community, John Wilson here and I wanted to share some news about the evolution of the Programill lineup. Most importantly, Ivoclar's new PrograMill 7. What stands out right away is the reduced air consumption this mill requires, but what you'll notice first is that impressive new touchscreen. For us, the biggest advantage has been increased spindle power. My laboratory's known for these larger cases with complex geometries, and I can tell you that extra power really makes a difference. Next time you see your Ivoclar representative, be sure to ask about the PrograMill 7 and tell them John Wilson sent you. Thank you. At exocad Insights in beautiful Mallorca, we finally caught up with Felix from Imagine USA—and the timing couldn't have been better. As an exocad dealer on the front lines of digital dentistry, Felix shared his excitement about the strong turnout, the familiar faces, and most importantly, the innovation coming from exocad. What stood out most? The new exocad Hub and its cloud-based capabilities, along with powerful AI-driven tools inside DentalDB designed for efficient batch processing. For Felix and the Imagine team, it's not just about seeing what's new—it's about putting it to the test. By running new features through their own production facility first, they ensure real-world performance before bringing solutions to their customers. Beyond the technology, Felix emphasized the value of being there in person—connecting face-to-face with partners, having meaningful conversations, and stepping back to see where the industry is headed. And of course, doing it all in Mallorca doesn't hurt either. Mallorca, Spain. exocad Insights 2026 Three completely different conversations somehow all landed on the same theme: digital dentistry keeps getting smaller, smarter, and way more connected. First up, the crew catches back up with digital designer and educator Marjorie de Andrade, who went from Brazil to New Zealand chasing opportunity, only to end up building a global career through remote design, social media, and education. Marjorie talks about creating the Mastering exocad course, freelancing for dentists around the world, and why finding purpose through teaching became more important than simply designing crowns. She also shares thoughts on the newly announced exocad Hub, remote collaboration, and how digital dentistry is making communication between dentists and technicians easier than ever. Then the microphones turn to Dr. Dwight Pate for one of the most workflow-heavy conversations the podcast has ever had. From hand waxing cases the old-school Dawson and Pankey way to designing provisionals and controlling full-mouth rehabs completely through exocad, Dr. Pate breaks down how he combines analog principles with digital workflows. The discussion dives deep into occlusion, provisionals, articulators, guided workflows, AI design, and why he believes digital dentistry still has to prove itself back in the analog world before it ever reaches the patient's mouth. Finally, the crew reconnects with Dr. Eimear O'Connell to talk about why clinicians need to attend events like Insights just as much as technicians. Eimear shares how digital workflows are improving communication between doctors, labs, and patients while making implant planning, dentures, and aesthetic dentistry more predictable than ever. From digital dentures that fit with almost zero adjustment to helping patients emotionally reconnect with their smiles, the conversation reminds everyone that behind every scanner, workflow, and software update is still a real person whose life changes because of dentistry.Special Guests: Dr. Dwight Pate, Dr. Eimear O'Connell, and Marjorie de Andrade .
