In this episode of 'Shaping Your Pottery' with Nic Torres, he challenges potters to step beyond their comfort zones and try different pottery techniques. Nic discusses how sticking to one technique or method can limit creativity and growth. He presents examples of how exploring alternate methods can broaden the range of styles and techniques a potter can use to develop a unique pottery voice. He encourages wheel throwers to try hand building and sculpting, and for sculptors to try raccoon and other techniques. The main idea expressed is that experimenting with various techniques leads to expansion of knowledge and enhancement of one's pottery skills. Torres includes an offer for a free booklet of 15 questions, designed to help potters discover their unique voice.  www.shapingyourpottery.com/questions 00:00 Introduction and Challenge Announcement 00:18 My Journey: From Wheel Throwing to Hand Building 00:32 Nicole Dacey's Story: A Wheel Thrower's Perspective 01:14 The Pitfalls of Sticking to One Technique 01:33 The Challenge: Try Something New in Pottery 02:21 The Benefits of Expanding Your Pottery Techniques 03:06 Conclusion and Final Challenge 03:15 Bonus: Discover Your Unique Pottery Voice

There's no copy and paste message you can send out to the companies you'd like to partner with, but you can certainly be yourself and share how you'd make a great person to talk about their products. Best of luck if you're thinking about reaching out to some companies for collaborations. Listener QuestionsOn this episode:- Hello, love the podcast and have been listening since the beginning! This is my first question on the show. SO, I was vending a show this past weekend and dealt with a very rude, disrespectful person which was unfortunately one of the other vendors. I've had unpleasant customers before but this was another level especially since it was a vendor. Since then I've been thinking about it and wish I had handled it differently... I was very passive/defensive but wish I went on the offense a bit more. So the question is how do you deal with a toxic person at an event? How do we sort out the money aspect? 50/50? Is there a formula for this? Any experiences you can share that would help would be much appreciated? @blacktoothpottery- How do you track your inventory on consignment at different locations. Are there systems you've found or seen others use that you love? Are there ones you'd avoid like the plague? I've been thinking of trying one next year — a subscription model where members would receive a new pot once a quarter, and they'd be exclusive new work only for members. Problem is, idk how to sell it to people or logistically how to set it up. Pay all at once, or once a quarter when the pot ships? We cover it from a range of scenarios on today's discussion: student age, format of the class, type of studio, teacher communication, etc. Enjoy!Listener QuestionsOn this episode:- So I am a hobbyist.  After 2-3 years of part-time slingin' clay, I am actually finding out that, hey, I can actually make money at this!  I have 2 stores that sell my things on consignment, and its starting to ramp up, especially with one shop begging for more. Ryan, you have talked before in the show about having a DBA, so my question is, is that something I should do also? Ryan Rehm, Little King Pottery- I've been doing some kiln tech work (loading kilns and firing things for other people, mostly students. NOT teaching) and I'm really enjoying it. Sometimes there are some glaze issues like an obvious spot where it will touch the shelf that I just sponge off before loading. I can't catch everything with hundreds of pieces to fire and my heart sinks over the ones I miss, or the ones that act unpredictably, but here's the question - am I robbing someone of a teachable moment with the minor fixes? Disadvantages? I've been invited to participate in a group show with some other Ceramic artists that I really admire. The show is a little over a month long at a gallery in Portland. After saying yes, I find out that they want 10 pieces, but really they only want 2 pieces to be shown at the gallery, the rest would be only virtual. Of course the gallery wants 50% of all of the 10 pieces. It would be still my responsibility to drop ship the pieces to the customer. I think the shipping fee will be added to the order so I don't have to cough that up too. I already sell pretty much 100% of my work virtual on my own website. Although, I don't always sell out on a shop update. Is doing this show or this type of show really going to give me that much more exposure to give up 50%? I'm in such a quandary! Oh and they want to see pictures of all 10 pieces 3 months before the show. @juliannroush - Have you talked about writing artist statements for submitting work to galleries? I had to do one recently and wasn't sure how to approach it. (Also I am thinking Becca probably hates artist statements.

Thanks for listening and enjoy!Listener QuestionsOn this episode:- How do you approach other artists about trades? Trading is talked about often and I'm curious. Not that I feel like I want to trade, I just think I'd be too embarrassed to ask if I ever did want to @thistlemoorpottery- I'm a freelancer and I teach pottery for a few hours every week in a local studio in the city next to mine. I'm a contractor who works on commission basis per student with them . I also have an online business. The studio is asking me to sign a non compete that does not allow me to take up any opportunity that they think it's competition to them (this is the exact wording) it also does not allow me to work with anyone else within 20 miles of the location for one year , basically they are restraining my employability. Is this even possible for studios to ask for non. Competes with their contractors ? Obviously I refused and waiting to hear their response. It will mostly be termination of contract . I live 10 miles away from the studio in another city and I'm a part of the city's art group. I don't want to miss out on opportunities that my city may bring into existence in future. @isanceramics- First of all I want to tell you that I love your podcast and look forward to the weekly drops. Your prices don't have to be set in stone, so be open to changing them when you think it's needed.Listener QuestionsOn this episode:- Do you think the majority of Instagram popular potters fire oxidation rather than reduction? @seuzens- How do you guys handle pricing for larger orders in comparison to wholesale? For example, an order for 30-50 mugs for a restaurant to use. It's not wholesale, but that large of an order seems like it would warrant a discount from standard retail price. What do you guys do? @thepotterymason- Ryan, I am a small ceramics maker. Have you covered "pricing" and working side by side with makers/ceramicists/etc (not necessarily all together)? I've just started and shown at holiday fairs, ceramic arts shows, makers fairs, and I've found the vendors can be very different and pricing can be so different. For instance, selling a mug at a holiday show at $25-40 might be the norm, and then a maker fair it might be $40-70, and then a ceramic art fair might be different. I ask because I showed recently and have had lower prices in the past $25-35 mugs and vendors didn't like that at all - a few even came up to complain to me. Obviously, there's a touch of imposter syndrome and I need to value my work at a higher rate. @bruce.leongSend us questions so we can answer anything you've been thinking about on a future episode. Ryan & Becca answer a couple listener questions today about specific business situations you may find yourself in at some point. One involves pricing your work based on your local market vs pricing higher based on what your time is worth now. The other involves a sticky situation where you may have doubts about a potential partnership with a local business who wants to carry your products.Listener QuestionsOn this episode:- My sister and I started a ceramic business about a year and a half ago. Love the podcast and know you talk a ton about pricing. More specifically, we want to put more work into pieces that we know our market (mostly local), can't bear yet. Should we price them lower and hope they can, over time and popularity, they can increase in price? Or price them for what our time is worth now? We understand as a new business that we don't have a strong following or reputation, and that we may have to “grind” for a while. Mia @the_justuscollective- I was recently contacted by a local business that makes and sells loose teas, and they asked me to make about 10 mugs for them to sell on their website and at vendor markets. I love working with local small businesses, I love tea, and I'd love to do more small commissions for local businesses, so it seemed like a sure thing. But… my husband (who is in the food biz and knows about these things) is concerned that this tea biz is not properly licensed to sell a consumable product, and also makes some claims on their website about healing properties of their products. He thinks that I should not be affiliated with them, in case this becomes a legal issue for them. And it could also reflect poorly on him in his business. So here's my question (sorry so long): What do you think? Have you ever said no to a commission because it was someone you thought could damage your business reputation?
