Clarence Brown's family classic National Velvet is what's on tap in the 662nd edition of Have You Ever Seen. A pre-teen, horse-obsessed Elizabeth Taylor sheds tears from time to time, but she's remarkably optimistic all the same, especially about her beloved equine chum, "The Pie". Anne Revere won an Oscar for playing Taylor's preternaturally calm mom, while top-billed Mickey Rooney was starting to grow out of his annoying "I'm always overdoing it" phase. He's actually pretty good in this, playing a young loner with horse PTSD. They're the main players in this classic sports film, even if the horse-training and the steeplechase sequence at the end represent all the sportiness. So don't be a screechy kid brother. Just walk down an English road to make some friends while you ear up Ryan's one-man-show about the emotionally satisfying National Velvet. Our sponsor: Sparkplug Coffee. Lux Radio Theater "National Velvet" February 3, 1947 CBS starring Elizabeth Taylor and Mickey Rooney
Susan Granger, a product of Hollywood, born into Hollywood ‘Royalty'. A little name dropping here is more than okay. Let's consider that her father, S. Sylvan Simon was director/producer at MGM and Columbia. After his sudden death while filming From Here to Eternity, Susan's mother remarried and her step-father was Armand Deutsch, and MGM producer. Her godfathers were Red Skelton and Milton Berle. Lucille Ball carried her out of the hospital after she was born. Her horse was given to Elizabeth Taylor. Milton Berle set her up on a date with a newly arrived Elvis Presley. He brought her flowers and sang a Frank Sinatra song to her. And Errol Flynn read lines from Romeo and Juliet with her. Having been born into the business, Susan knows it inside and out. Therefore, who better to be a movie and drama critic? A fun and entertaining conversation with Susan: Born in the Golden Age of Hollywood Playing ‘let's pretend' and working with her father King Charles, National Velvet & Elizabeth Taylor A date with newbie Elvis Presley Her stepdad and an honest conversation – actress vs journalist Journalism and Pierre Salinger Why an entertainment critic History of the movie business Women and them movie industry Pandemic and its effect on the industry Factors to look for when reviewing ‘What I looked for are films that would hold up over the years and be new to my children and grandchildren. And as the years go on, they would find them entertaining.' (On how she chose the films for her book.) For more than 25 years Susan has been bringing her unique perspective to the field of communication. Her commentaries, reviews and interviews are distributed around the world. Susan is also the author of 150 Timeless Movies where she reviews classic and contemporary timeless movies. Susan has worked extensively doing speech and presentation coaching for top management and executives in several industries. Her articles have been published in WORKING WOMAN, PLAYBOY, THE NEW YORK TIMES, REDBOOK, LADIES HOME JOURNAL, FAMILY CIRCLE, TRAVEL AGENT, and COSMOPOLITAN…and many others. Susan studied journalism with Pierre Salinger at Mills College. She then graduated with highest honors in journalism with a B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania.

Well, we’re here again with another episode about an ‘00s CW show about an exceptionally bright teen with a very close parental relationship and in a relationship with a rich boy named Logan. Plot twist: It’s Veronica Mars! In Kyla’s latest rewatch of our other fave CW series, she realized this teen detective show loves pop culture refs almost as much as the Gilmores, so we had to do some compare and contrast with how they’re used. We revisit some of our past refs—including but not limited to the Beatles, Casablanca, Citizen Kane, Pretty in Pink, and This Is Spinal Tap—and find other fun crossovers between the series. Other pop culture we ref: Archie Comics, Barbara Eden, Keith Richards, Mommie Dearest, National Velvet, Omar Sharif, Sid and Nancy, The Thomas Crown Affair, Xanadu So it's a show? Mark Gemini Thwaite in conversation with David Eastaugh Thwaite spent part of 1985 living in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, joining Gothic rock band National Velvet, before returning to the UK in 1986. After forming a few bands in the Birmingham area including The First, he relocated to London in 1989. In 1989 Thwaite joined London-based Gothic group The Children (featuring Dave Roberts of Sex Gang Children on vocals), and performed on the 12" single Never Get Out Alive released in 1990.[3] During this time Thwaite was introduced to Kirk Brandon, founder member and vocalist for Spear of Destiny and Theatre of Hate. This began a 3-year collaboration between Thwaite and Brandon. Thwaite performed live with Spear of Destiny in 1990, and replaced original Theatre of Hate guitarist Billy Duffy on the 10th anniversary Theatre of Hate UK tour in 1991. A TOH live album 'Live at the Astoria '91' including Thwaite on guitar was subsequently released by Easterstone records. Thwaite continued as a member of Spear of Destiny, contributing guitars and some bass guitar to their 1992 album Sod's Law and the subsequent tour that same year.

Lauren is off to the races this month with National Velvet. In this early starring role for Elizabeth Taylor, we see the bond between a girl and her horse break new barriers. We also get to witness a ton of intense horse crashing, young man Mickey Rooney plays a thief with a heart of gold, and Greg simply doesn’t understand Horse-Girl culture. Nearly thirty years after its release, the film, Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken, is still discussed in rapturous terms by its mostly female audience, who came of age during the 1990s. Perhaps not since National Velvet had another film so popularly captured the unique relationship that exists between adolescent girls and the horses they ride. In this episode, Karen and Janet discuss the film’s wholesome appeal, its puzzling timeline, and the mythical albeit short-lived career of actor Michael Schoeffling (aka “Jake Ryan” from Sixteen Candles).

Listen, National Velvet, you have to listen to this episode. The Kyla and The Taylor are talking THE Elizabeth Taylor in National Velvet. This movie has a lot of animal-obsessed kids, and we’re digging in to how they connect with Lorelai’s pony obsession as a kid. The Kyla and The Taylor also debate if this movie was good, the varying shades of Mickey Rooney performances, and how the decorator of the Dragonfly Inn may or may not be like THE Elizabeth Taylor in this movie. Correction: Kyla references the movie All the Beautiful Places starring Elle Fanning and Justice Smith. The title is really All the Bright Places. Other pop culture we ref: The Yearling, Artie Shaw, Casablanca, Gaslight, Angela Lansbury, Strike Up the Band, Breakfast at Tiffany’s, The Barefoot Contessa, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, All the Bright Places, The Black Stallion, Fred Astaire So it's a show? Ask the right people - Rob & Carrie's kids, that is - and they'll tell you that there's not going to be any bigger film this autumn than My Little Pony: The Movie. We're certainly not going to call that kind of insight into question, which is why we celebrated that film's release by taking a look at our favorite movies about horses, and the strong bonds they form with humans. Be they stone-cold classics like National Velvet, modern crowdpleasers like Seabiscuit, or whatever the hell Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron is meant to be, horses have been part of cinema since its very inception, and we're happy to celebrate that long history. In Worth Mentioning, Tim and Rob go share their My Little Pony: The Movie date, Carrie talks about the new Netflix release of Stephen King's Gerald's Game and Tim shares some child's play with Cult of Chucky.
Janet Ellis talks about the books that have inspired her writing: The Golden Treasury of Poetry, National Velvet, The Bad Seed, Strangers on a Train, Good Behaviour and Candia McWilliams What To Look for In Winter

National Velvet is the story of a girl, Velvet Brown, who attempts to ride her horse to victory in the Grand National steeplechase. The fictional horse which Velvet Brown trained and rode in the National is called "The Pie". Velvet Brown is an awkward teenager living in a small English village, dreaming of one day owning horses. Her mother is a large taciturn woman who was once famous for swimming the English Channel; her father owns a butcher shop. One day when Velvet is sent on a delivery for her father, she encounters a man who, after a brief conversation with her, leaves all his horses to her in his will, then commits suicide. Velvet and her sisters manage to feed and keep the horses, and they have moderate success entering in local gymkhanas. Meanwhile, Velvet wins yet another horse in a local raffle - an ungainly, strong-willed piebald gelding known as The Pie (short for "The Piebald"). This is the horse she falls in love with; together with her father's apprentice, Mi Taylor, she starts dreaming of entering the Grand National. After scraping together the entry money and figuring out how to conceal Velvet's gender, Velvet and Mi take the trip to compete in the race. Go To GoDaddy, use the promo code blu19 and save 10%
