Milwaukee leaders denounce arrest of Judge Hannah Dugan by Milwaukee Independent
In this conversation, we explore a poem by Wendell Berry which calls us to wake up from the numbing effects of conventional life and practice living with true aliveness. We begin by reflecting on how Berry's invitation to "do something that won't compute" challenges us to question the systems and habits that keep us trapped in unconscious patterns - the quick profit, the ready-made, the fear of death - and instead to embrace practices that cultivate genuine freedom and connection with life. We delve into the tension between the familiar and the unfamiliar, discussing how our natural tendency to create predictable cycles can both build stable communities and wall us off from deeper truths. Through Berry's provocative lines, we consider how systems try to predict and control us, and how deliberately cultivating 'eccentricity' - living at least partially outside the dominant cultural expectations - can be a path to a kind of aliveness and responsibility for life. We examine how laughter, loving what seems undeserving, and asking questions without answers can shake us from our sleepiness, while also acknowledging that not all disruptions are equally valuable - suggesting that we measure new possibilities against what would satisfy someone bringing life into the world. Ultimately, we see Berry's manifesto as an invitation to practice deliberateness through conscious engagement with life's full complexity rather than waiting for life to wake us through crisis. You can find out more about the Thirdspace Professional Coaching Course 2025-26 on the Thirdspace website wearethirdspace.org This week's conversation is hosted, as always, by Lizzie Winn and Justin Wise of Thirdspace. Episode Overview 00:00 Introduction to Turning Towards Life 02:52 Exploring Wendell Berry's Manifesto 05:54 Eccentric Perspectives 09:52 Nature and Connection in Wendell Berry's Work 14:54 The Invitation to Question and Reflect 19:49 The Familiar vs. The Unfamiliar 24:38 Finding Sources of Truthfulness in Life 29:35 Conclusion and Reflection on the Conversation Here's our source for this week: Manifesto: The Mad Farmer Liberation Front Love the quick profit, the annual raise, vacation with pay. Want more of everything ready-made. Be afraid to know your neighbors and to die. And you will have a window in your head. Not even your future will be a mystery any more. Your mind will be punched in a card and shut away in a little drawer. When they want you to buy something they will call you. When they want you to die for profit they will let you know. So, friends, every day do something that won't compute. Love the Lord. Love the world. Work for nothing. Take all that you have and be poor. Love someone who does not deserve it. Denounce the government and embrace the flag. Hope to live in that free republic for which it stands. Give your approval to all you cannot understand. Praise ignorance, for what man has not encountered he has not destroyed. Ask the questions that have no answers. Invest in the millenium. Plant sequoias. Say that your main crop is the forest that you did not plant, that you will not live to harvest. Say that the leaves are harvested when they have rotted into the mold. Call that profit. Prophesy such returns. Put your faith in the two inches of humus that will build under the trees every thousand years. Listen to carrion – put your ear close, and hear the faint chattering of the songs that are to come. Expect the end of the world. Laugh. Laughter is immeasurable. Be joyful though you have considered all the facts. So long as women do not go cheap for power, please women more than men. Ask yourself: Will this satisfy a woman satisfied to bear a child? Will this disturb the sleep of a woman near to giving birth? Go with your love to the fields. Lie down in the shade. Rest your head in her lap. Swear allegiance to what is nighest your thoughts. As soon as the generals and the politicos can predict the motions of your mind, lose it. Leave it as a sign to mark the false trail, the way you didn't go. Be like the fox who makes more tracks than necessary, some in the wrong direction. Practice resurrection. Questions about whether pretending to denounce your faith to save your life will cause you to lose your salvation, whether lying to save others' lives is comparable to lying about your faith to save yourself, and advice for someone struggling with crippling intellectual doubts. Can a Christian pretend to denounce his faith to save his life so that he can continue to live his life for God, or will he lose his salvation? If lying to save others' lives is acceptable, is denying your faith to save yourself or your family acceptable when you don't mean it? Do you have any advice for someone struggling with crippling intellectual doubts?

On November 12, unionized nurses at Ascension St. Agnes Hospital in Baltimore held a rally in front of the Marriott Hotel downtown, where the US Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) was holding a meeting. St. Agnes nurses rallied with supporters from around the city, and they were even joined by fellow Ascension nurses who traveled from Wichita, Kansas, and Austin, Texas.According to a press release from National Nurses Organizing Committee / National Nurses United (NNOC-NNU), the purpose of the rally was to “highlight how Ascension has failed to follow USCCB directives to Catholic health care organizations to both serve and advocate for patients ‘at the margins of society' and ‘treat its employees respectfully and justly.'... Baltimore nurses have been in negotiations since Feb. 2024, following a successful union election in November 2023. Ascension has failed to bargain in good faith with Saint Agnes nurses on language that would improve safe staffing and protect patients from cuts to services, lawsuits for billing disputes, and surprise billing or excess charges.” In this on-the-ground episode, you'll hear speeches and chants from the Nov. 12 rally, and we speak with Gideon Eziama, a registered nurse with over 20 years of experience who has worked at Ascension St. Agnes for the last six years, and Lisa Watson, a registered nurse at Ascension Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita, who traveled to Baltimore to stand in solidarity with her coworkers at Ascension St. Agnes. When Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, many countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America didn't join the United States and Europe in jumping to Kyiv's defense. Their leaders wondered why they should oppose Russia's aggression after watching Washington get away with decades of military interventions from Iraq to Libya, raising the question of whether opposing the use of force somewhere necessitates opposing it everywhere. The Rich Zeoli Show- Hour 2: 4:05pm- Times Demand Serious Economic Ideas: In response to Kamala Harris's announced “price gouging” policy proposal, The Washington Post editorial board writes: “Vice President Kamala Harris's speech Friday was an opportunity to get specific with voters about how a Harris presidency would manage an economy that many feel is not working well for them. Unfortunately, instead of delivering a substantial plan, she squandered the moment on populist gimmicks…Ms. Harris says she'll target companies that make ‘excessive' profits, whatever that means. (It's hard to see how groceries, a notoriously low-margin business, would qualify.) Thankfully, this gambit by Ms. Harris has been met with almost instant skepticism, with many critics citing President Richard M. Nixon's failed price controls from the 1970s. Whether the Harris proposal wins over voters remains to be seen, but if sound economic analysis still matters, it won't.” You can read the full editorial here: https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2024/08/16/harris-economy-plan-gimmicks/ 4:30pm- In a recently resurfaced clip, Kamala Harris states that the president has the power to confiscate patents held by private citizens and business if the government believes the patents are not being used properly. Wouldn't this policy stifle research/development and innovation? Harris made the comment in November of 2019 while campaigning for president in Muscatine, Iowa. 4:40pm- Matt tries Chicago deep-dish pizza, Rich injures his wrist being super manly (and definitely not while swimming on a floaty raft), and Mama Zeoli says you shouldn't leave the hotel in Chicago—it's too dangerous! Plus, why doesn't Rich have bodyguards like Sean Hannity? 4:50pm- Kamala Wants to Stop Kroger-Albertsons Merger: C. Jarrett Dieterle of Reason writes: “Amid all the competing headlines of the 2024 election, there may be no more bread-and-butter issue—literally—than how much Americans are paying to put food on their tables. The GOP is gearing up to attack the Biden-Harris administration for escalating grocery store bills, while presumptive Democratic nominee Kamala Harris has now responded with her own plan to fight higher food prices. One of the hottest items in this political food fight is unquestionably the ongoing litigation from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) attempting to block the Kroger-Albertsons grocery store merger. A host of Democratic lawmakers recently joined the legal fight, arguing that any potential merger would raise prices, increase food deserts, and disproportionately hurt unionized labor.” You can read the full article here: https://reason.com/2024/08/17/harris-joins-the-ftcs-food-fight-against-kroger-albertsons-merger/

In light of recent events, it is incumbent on all champions of freedom to denounce violence in all its forms. Reasonable people can agree that the Capitol riots on January 6, 2021, were a tragedy that should never have happened. But this acknowledgement shouldn't prevent us from seeking the truth about what really happened that day. Matt Kibbe is joined by independent journalist and BlazeTV contributor Steve Baker, who was at the Capitol on January 6 and captured most of that day on film. Among the many things that still require explanation is why the Capitol Police did not provide more security for the event and why certain members of the force have been caught lying in front of Congress.
Many have said that denouncing Greek organizations is a trend. it isn't. It is a move of God that requires the destruction of evil altars. The political rhetoric against the Supreme Court reached new highs this week, after the Justices ruled that the presidency has immunity for official actions. But look at the statistics: 45.8% of cases in the 2023-24 term were unanimous, including some big cases, and only half of the High Court's 6-3 decisions this year were split along ideological lines. Yet voters won't hear those figures from Joe Biden, as he runs against Donald Trump, and the Supreme Court, in November's election. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
