Read Online“I tell you truly, this poor widow put in more than all the rest; for those others have all made offerings from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has offered her whole livelihood.”  Luke 21:3–4We must all see ourselves as this poor widow by offering our “whole livelihood” to Christ. Everything we have is a gift from God, and it must be offered back to God, sacrificially, as our gift to Him. The material offering made by this poor widow was two small coins worth very little. The truth is that even if you were the richest person in the world and donated all that you had to God, it would greatly pale in comparison to the gift given to us by our Lord. We are all poor in the big picture of God's grace and His Kingdom. The most any one of us can offer is symbolized by these two small coins.As you look at your own life, how willing are you to give everything you have to our Lord for His glory and service? The only appropriate “offering” we are called to give to our Lord is the “sacrifice” of our entire life. This spiritual truth is something very difficult for those who are very wealthy in the things of this world. Material wealth offers an easy way to live in comfort. Money can provide every modern convenience, entertainment, fun, worldly security and much of what this world has to offer. But money cannot buy fulfillment. It cannot satisfy us in the truest sense. This is why many people who live very luxurious lives are not truly happy.Happiness is found in sacrifice. Specifically, it is found in sacrificial love by which we dedicate everything we are and all that we have to the sole purpose of the glory of God and the furtherment of His Kingdom. Sadly, when one is rich in the things of this world, it is easy to think that offering a portion of their wealth, such as a tithe, means that they can keep and use the rest any way they want. But that's not true. Giving of ourselves completely to God and to His service does not necessarily mean that we donate all of our money to the Church. But it does mean that we offer everything to God. For many, when this complete offering is done every day, God will lead them to use their material resources for the raising of their family, to take care of their basic needs, and, at times, to even enjoy various comforts in life. But the real question is whether or not you truly live as though all you have and all you are is God's and is to be used for His glory and the furtherment of His will.Reflect, today, upon this poor widow. She was greatly blessed to have very little. This made it easier for her to remain detached from money and other forms of material wealth. And in that detachment, she gave all to God. She entrusted all to Him, and Jesus noticed and praised her. Reflect upon our Lord's reaction to you and to the offering of your life to Him. If you are holding back from our Lord, then use the witness of this poor widow to inspire you to daily dedicate everything to the service of God in accord with His holy will. My wealthy Lord, Your riches are all that matter in life. You bestow the riches of eternal salvation and countless other graces upon those who have given all to You. I do give my life to You, dear Lord. I give all that I have and all that I am. We'll often phrase questions about the existence of evil as, "Why do bad things happen to good people?"There's a problem with this question: there are no good people. If we view the problem evil through the lens of our goodness, we will see ourselves as victims. But when we see the problem of evil through the lens of God's goodness, we will see ourselves as victors.Scripture tells us that God is good. James 1:16-17Like the lights in the sky, His goodness is constant. When life is bad, God is good. Don't get mad at God during times of pain, run to God during times of pain. John 10:10God is the solution to, not the author of life's tragedies. Matthew 7:11If your theology has your heavenly Father doing things that we would put an earthly father in jail for doing, you need to change your theology.Why do bad things happen? Bad things happen for three reasons:1. We make badGod didn't create evil, He created the ability to make choices. Evil is not a thing but an absence of a thing, like dark and light. When we "turn down" God, we turn down good and we are left with bad. Every one of us is good at making bad decisions. Romans 5:12Why did God create choice? So we could love Him and love others. You can't love without the possibly of not loving. Joshua 24:15The pain in this world doesn't reflect on God's goodness, it reflects on our brokenness.2. Genetic disorders, viruses, contagions, infections are the natural result of a fallen world.Why doesn't God just stop bad things from happening?1. God isLove does what's best for the other person. Pain is necessary to let us know something is wrong. If God shielded you from your spiritual sickness, you would think everything is fine, and die in your sins before receiving the antidote.2. God is a good . Good parents know that children must experience consequences.How can we fear no evil?1. Deal with . 2 Tim 1:7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear and timidity, but of power, love, and self-discipline.Worry is a fear response when you feel out of control. God's Choice vs Our ChoiceJust as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world,that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love,Ephesians 1:4We have looked at the blessings the Lord has given His children in Christ, even to the point of the promise of “every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ” (Eph. 1:3), which are now ours because of Him. And one of the greatest blessings is being chosen by God to be adopted as His son. Nothing can compete with this. Nothing.Just think, when we were not looking for God or even had Him on our mind, He chose to bring us into His family as His child for no other reason than “the good pleasure of His will” or simply “because He wanted to” (Eph. 1:5,9). And if God wants to do something, who is going to tell Him, no? Not me.So, in Ephesians 1:3, we are introduced to the wonder that we have, past tense, already been blessed with “every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ.” And every means just that, every— or all, each, the entire, in totality, and without exception. In other words, there are no blessings that you have not already been blessed with. You have them all, every one of them, and on steroids. But that doesn't mean you are currently experiencing those blessings. That is another subject altogether, and we'll dig into that when we talk about the life of sanctification at a later time. So hang on.The Sum of Our BlessingsLet's look at just a few of the blessings the Lord reveals to us in the first few verses of this chapter.• Election: Where God chose us before the foundation of the world to become just like Him, holy and without blame in love (1:4).• Predestination: God pre-determined that we would become His son through adoption by Jesus Christ to Himself. And He did this, not because we were worthy or somehow merited sonship. No, He chose us to become part of His family because He wanted to, and for no other reason (1:5).• Acceptance: God, for some reason I'll never understand, chose to accept us into fellowship with Himself regardless of our past or how bleak our present may seem. And He did this because of His Son (1:6).• Redemption: God chose to pay the price for our freedom from the consequences of our sins by the sacrifice of His only Son. He redeemed us and forgave all our sins— past, present, and future, because of the riches of His grace (1:7).• Mystery: And if that wasn't enough, He has made known to us the mystery of His will because, again, He wanted to and it brought Him pleasure (1:9).This we could call, “Our Blessings, Part One.” But it gets even better.The Sum of Our Blessings… Uh, and Even MoreThe book of Ephesians tells us even more about how blessed we are in Him. For example, the sphere of our spiritual blessings is in the heavenlies (our translators added the word places in 1:3). This is where God dwells and where we will spend eternity. So our blessings are not temporal or have an expiration date, like everything else in this life. No, they exist, like God, forever.We are given a glimpse into Christ's present enthronement, which is also in the heavenly places, seated at the right hand of the Father (1:20). And we are then told, since we are “in Christ,” that our present enthronement is also with Him in the heavenly places (2:6). And it is in the heavenly...

I greet you in Jesus' precious name! It is Wednesday morning, the 7th of February, 2024, and this is your friend, Angus Buchan, with a thought for today. We start in 1 Peter 5:8-9: Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Resist him, steadfast in the faith,…” We really need to understand something. The devil is a coward, a bully, and a liar, and he is a thief. His neck was broken on the cross of Calvary when Jesus died, and He said, “It is finished.” He meant it. But the devil tells us lies and if we do not arm ourselves with faith and walk closely with the Lord, he will destroy us by his lies and his accusations. He is like the lion who waits for the stragglers. If you look at the Maasai Mara and the great migrations of the wildebeest. Tens of thousands of them follow after the new grass, and who goes with them? Prides of lions. Those lions will never enter the middle of a herd of wildebeest or buffalo because they know they will be killed. They hang around the outside, waiting for the stragglers, for those that are lame, sick, or young and they pick them off.“Greater is He who is within you that he that is in the world.”1 John 4:4We need to stand together, and understand that we are in Christ. Revelation 12:11: “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.” The devil cannot touch you if you are walking closely with the Lord and if you are walking closely with the brethren. That scripture goes on to say that the same sufferings that you are going through are experienced by the brotherhood in the world. You are not alone. You see, the devil tries to isolate you, and then he tells you you will never make it. It is a lie from the pit of hell. We need to walk together and walk by faith. It was episode 25, way back in January 2020, when Tim last joined us to talk about Athalonz. A lot has changed with the shoe company based in the Phoenix Valley. After they did a fantastic job getting their shoes into the hands of some of the best athletes on the planet, when it comes to the Champions Tour and Long Drive competitions, a little thing called Covid happened. There were a lot of small brands, like Athalonz, that didn't make it through Covid. But as a smaller, direct-to-consumer shoe company with some outstanding tech, they were able to weather the storm.Several years later, they've launched a new shoe, the Mana Mangrove Pro, and have a second version of their successful EnVe line coming.But that might not be the most significant news regarding Athalonz.  Some of you might not know that Tim Markison is a successful, no, VERY successful Patent Attorney with hundreds of patents. Many of which are involved with Athalonz. And one of the major brands in the shoe business is using their patented technology in their shoes. This was incredibly interesting, and we are eager to hear the outcome of the litigation when it starts in March. “I tell you truly, this poor widow put in more than all the rest; for those others have all made offerings from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has offered her whole livelihood.” Luke 21:3–4We must all see ourselves as this poor widow by offering our “whole livelihood” to Christ. Everything we have is a gift from God, and it must be offered back to God, sacrificially, as our gift to Him. The material offering made by this poor widow was two small coins worth very little. The truth is that even if you were the richest person in the world and donated all that you had to God, it would greatly pale in comparison to the gift given to us by our Lord. We are all poor in the big picture of God's grace and His Kingdom. The most any one of us can offer is symbolized by these two small coins.As you look at your own life, how willing are you to give everything you have to our Lord for His glory and service? The only appropriate “offering” we are called to give to our Lord is the “sacrifice” of our entire life. This spiritual truth is something very difficult for those who are very wealthy in the things of this world. Material wealth offers an easy way to live in comfort. Money can provide every modern convenience, entertainment, fun, worldly security and much of what this world has to offer. But money cannot buy fulfillment. It cannot satisfy us in the truest sense. This is why many people who live very luxurious lives are not truly happy.Happiness is found in sacrifice. Specifically, it is found in sacrificial love by which we dedicate everything we are and all that we have to the sole purpose of the glory of God and the furtherment of His Kingdom. Sadly, when one is rich in the things of this world, it is easy to think that offering a portion of their wealth, such as a tithe, means that they can keep and use the rest any way they want. But that's not true. Giving of ourselves completely to God and to His service does not necessarily mean that we donate all of our money to the Church. But it does mean that we offer everything to God. For many, when this complete offering is done every day, God will lead them to use their material resources for the raising of their family, to take care of their basic needs, and, at times, to even enjoy various comforts in life. But the real question is whether or not you truly live as though all you have and all you are is God's and is to be used for His glory and the furtherment of His will. Reflect, today, upon this poor widow. She was greatly blessed to have very little. This made it easier for her to remain detached from money and other forms of material wealth. And in that detachment, she gave all to God. She entrusted all to Him, and Jesus noticed and praised her. Reflect upon our Lord's reaction to you and to the offering of your life to Him. If you are holding back from our Lord, then use the witness of this poor widow to inspire you to daily dedicate everything to the service of God in accord with His holy will. My wealthy Lord, Your riches are all that matter in life. You bestow the riches of eternal salvation and countless other graces upon those who have given all to You. I do give my life to You, dear Lord. I give all that I have and all that I am. Please receive the offering of my life and use me in accord with Your holy will. When they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are not wise. We, however, will not boast beyond proper limits, but will confine our boasting to the sphere of service God himself has assigned to us, a sphere that also includes you. (2 Corinthians 10:12-13)We're in a series exploring four biblical ways to escape the comparison trap—our tendency to weigh ourselves against others until we feel improperly superior or inferior to them.We've already explored two ways to escape the comparison trap. First, confess your pride. Second, thank God for the goodness he has shown to you and to others. Today's passage shows us the third way to escape: Ask yourself if you're even playing the same game as the person you're comparing yourself to.The context of today's passage is that the Corinthians were comparing Paul to some false preachers (see 2 Corinthians 11:5). Commenting on this passage, one theologian explains that apparently, “Compared to secular orators, Paul was not as entertaining, dramatic, or engaging.”But Paul refused to compare himself to those other preachers. Why? Because he wasn't even playing the same game as they were. They were there to preach “a different gospel” (see 2 Corinthians 11:4). Paul was there to preach the one true gospel of Jesus Christ. And so, he said, he would “confine [his] boasting to the sphere of service God himself [had] assigned to [him].”You and I do the opposite of Paul all the time. Let me give you just one personal example.My friend Cal Newport writes incredible business books like Deep Work and Digital Minimalism. And he writes for a very broad audience—for Christians and non-Christians alike. A couple of years ago, I found myself falling into the comparison trap and growing jealous of Cal. By God's grace, I realized how ridiculous this was, because “the sphere of service God himself has assigned to” me is far narrower than Cal's. I am called to help Christians connect the gospel to their work. And so, my total potential audience is way smaller than Cal's. So it makes absolutely zero sense to compare myself to him! Because we aren't even playing the same game.Lebron James wouldn't compare himself to Tiger Woods. Similarly, you and I should realize the foolishness of comparing ourselves to others with different callings.If you're comparing yourself to someone else today, Paul shows you one way to escape. Ask if you're even playing the same game. If you're not, knock it off. If you are, access some of the other escape routes we've already explored in this series or the final one we will unpack next week.
