In the series Reframing Rest, we've learned that the Sabbath is a rhythm, rooted in creation. A reminder of how God rescued us from our slavery to sin, and a gift that God gives us every single week to enjoy for our good.We learned that we stop on the Sabbath to reveal our trust in God, refuel us for the work of God, and refocus us on what we have in God. That He is enough, and I don't have to spin my life in circles for God to keep the world spinning and in control. And we learned that on the Sabbath, we should do whatever is restful and restorative, whatever causes us delight, and whatever leads us to worship God.We've provided for you a list of some best practices, and even had a panel of people from The Harbor - in different stages of life - sharing how they are seeking to practice the Sabbath in their own life. Now we end our series by trying to answer the question, "What does Jesus think about the Sabbath?" What this short message by Pastor Jeff Maness to see!Click here for Pastor Jeff's Message Notes and a list of resources on observing the Sabbath.________________________________________________________________________Subscribe so you don't miss a thing!Christian Copyright Solutions (CCS, BMI, ASCAP, SESAC)License: #14753Find us on:YouTube: YouTube.com/TheHarborInstagram: Instagram.com/TheHarbor_lifeFacebook: Facebook.com/TheHarbordotlifeWebsite: https://www.TheHarbor.lifeWatch/listen on The Harbor AppNew episode every week!
Throughout this series, we've talked about the benefits and difficulties of observing a weekly Sabbath. We've talked about things we should do on that day and things we should stop for that day. And we've gone over what Scripture has to say about it. This fourth message is a two-part panel discussion with people in different stages of life taking questions from the audience on how they Sabbath. In these two videos, there are questions about Sabbathing in different living situations, like when you have small children and when your spouse doesn't Sabbath with you. The panelists also talk about things like: Can you watch sports on the Sabbath? Can you go to a restaurant? Do you cook on the Sabbath? What about naps? Can you partake in hobbies you enjoy? This is part one, recorded at the 9:00 AM service. After you listen to this, you can click the link below to listen to part two of "This Is How We Do It - A Sabbath Panel Discussion" which was recorded at the 11:00 AM service. Some of the discussion will be similar, but the audience had different questions for our panel which included Pastor Jeff and Sabrina Maness, Ferrin Gillespie, Justin and Mackinzie Ruszkiewicz.Click here to listen to Part Two.Click here for a list of resources on observing a weekly rest called Sabbath.________________________________________________________________________Subscribe so you don't miss a thing!Christian Copyright Solutions (CCS, BMI, ASCAP, SESAC)License: #14753Find us on:YouTube: YouTube.com/TheHarborInstagram: Instagram.com/TheHarbor_lifeFacebook: Facebook.com/TheHarbordotlifeWebsite: https://www.TheHarbor.lifeWatch/listen on The Harbor AppNew episode every week!

While there is an abundance of historical, psychological, physical, and even scientific and medical evidence of the benefits of taking one day off each week to completely rest, the vast majority of people—especially in our modern Western world—fight against this rhythm that God rooted into creation. We're like three-year-olds fighting a nap—knowing we're exhausted but refusing to accept God's pathway to rest. Maybe one of the biggest reasons we fight against it—especially as followers of Jesus—is that we don't truly understand the "why" behind Sabbath rest. And that's what we will reframe in this message, week two of our series, Reframing Rest.Click here for Jeff's Message Notes.Click here for Small Group Discussion Questions.________________________________________________________________________Subscribe so you don't miss a thing!Christian Copyright Solutions (CCS, BMI, ASCAP, SESAC)License: #14753Find us on:YouTube: YouTube.com/TheHarborInstagram: Instagram.com/TheHarbor_lifeFacebook: Facebook.com/TheHarbordotlifeWebsite: https://www.TheHarbor.lifeWatch/listen on The Harbor AppNew episode every week!

Welcome to another insightful episode of Father and Joe! I'm Joe Rockey, joined by Father Boniface Hicks, as we delve into the profound meaning of the 4th Commandment: "Honor your mother and father." In this special episode, we address a listener's question about what it means to honor your parents, especially when their guidance might seem flawed as you grow older.Father Boniface explains the virtue of piety, a subset of justice that acknowledges our inability to repay our parents for giving us life, just as we cannot repay God. "Our parents have always given us something that we can never repay them for," Father Boniface shares, emphasizing that this honor holds true even in difficult circumstances. He acknowledges the complexities of parental relationships, especially for those who have experienced abandonment or abuse, and offers a compassionate perspective on how to navigate these challenging situations while still adhering to the biblical commandment.Father Boniface highlights the importance of reverence towards parents, stating, "As we grow, even in healing and forgiveness, ultimately the movement towards heaven is that we start to see the good in everything." He also discusses the evolving nature of the parent-child relationship as children reach adulthood and become independent.Drawing from the example of Jesus and the Holy Family, Father Boniface illustrates how Jesus honored His earthly parents despite being greater in dignity. "He followed the family business and went along with the flow," showing that honoring parents includes recognizing their role and sacrifices. We also explore the broader implications of the commandments and their order in the Bible. The first three commandments focus on our relationship with God, while the fourth emphasizes honoring those who gave us life, highlighting a divine structure in these sacred guidelines. As Joe notes, "There is an order, and there's something interesting to ponder in this."Throughout the episode, we strive to provide practical and compassionate advice for those seeking to live out their faith in their relationships with their parents. We acknowledge the difficulties and offer insights into maintaining a balance between honoring our parents and not indulging their wrongdoings.Join us in this heartfelt discussion that aims to enrich your understanding of the 4th Commandment and its application in our lives today. Billions of people in the world are missing out on the New Testament message of abundant living. Human reason, including non-biblical ideas of “human love,” continues to lead the world toward suffering, confusion, and disaster. What is the true way to love and peace in the world? Most professing Christians know the answer, Matthew 22:37. Jesus Christ gave these two principles to be obeyed by every human being: “‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.' This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.” [Matthew 22:37-40] My friends, this is the way to true life, meaning, and fulfillment. But why do so few enjoy this true life? Because human beings do not like to be told what to do. These are “commandments” and humans resist commandments, including the Ten Commandments. But many would rather remain ignorant, because it suits their selfish desires. Aldous Huxley, the famous English author, expressed this perspective well: “Most ignorance is vincible ignorance. We don't know because we don't want to know. It is our will that decides how and upon what subjects we shall use our intelligence.” (Ends and Means, p. 312). But there IS a God, and He commands us to love Him! The First Great Commandment to love God is defined by the first four of the Ten Commandments, and the Fourth Commandment of the Ten emphasizes a weekly action in loving God. Exodus 20:8–10, “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God.” Which day is the Christian Sabbath? On today's program we'll be offering a free study guide, by that title: Which Day Is the Christian Sabbath? Be sure to write down the contact information to order your free copy! My friends, will you love God? Will you obey the Fourth Commandment? You need to know the true Christian way of life and the true Sabbath of Jesus Christ!

We take a look at what the Catechism teaches about the Church in relation to political communities. Every institution has their own vision of what it means to be human, which shapes their policies. Because the Church knows the truth, that every person is made in the image and likeness of God, the Church must weigh in to ensure that the dignity of the human person is at the forefront of political decisions and policies. Today's readings are Catechism paragraphs 2244-2257. This episode has been found to be in conformity with the Catechism by the Institute on the Catechism, under the Subcommittee on the Catechism, USCCB. As citizens of a nation, we have certain responsibilities in accordance with God's Law. The Catechism provides parameters for contributing to society, welcoming the foreigner, refusing obedience, and resisting oppression. Fr. Mike helps us better understand our role as co-collaborators in society within the lens of our world today. Today's readings are Catechism paragraphs 2238-2243. This episode has been found to be in conformity with the Catechism by the Institute on the Catechism, under the Subcommittee on the Catechism, USCCB. Today, we read CCC, 2232 - 2257 and discuss the fourth commandment: "Honor your father and your mother." It is through marriage and family that we can - as children of our mothers and our fathers - receive the gift of life, the gift of faith, and the gift of ongoing formation. That formation - that sanctification and, God willing, salvation - comes through "self-denial, sound judgment, and self-mastery" and through "generous and tireless [forgiveness of] one another..." What a blessing and what a beautifully difficult task we have ahead of us! To view/listen to the homily given by Fr. Mike Schmitz referenced in this episode, go to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SDdf22MLPe0 To join us in praying the Our Lady Undoer of Knots Novena, view my videos on Instagram each day (from Thursday, 9/21 - Friday, 9/29), and, for the novena prayers, go to: https://www.praymorenovenas.com/mary-undoer-knots-novena This podcast is powered by Pinecast.
By Greg Thomas in Cleveland, OH - June 24, 2023 - As you know, I have been covering the 10 Commandments… one-by-one. A few months ago, I began a discussion of the 4th Commandment and instruction to remember the Sabbath. In part 1 of that Sermon given on April 22nd, we covered a number of key points regarding the Sabbath Day. Today, we will look at Scriptures written by the Apostle Paul that are typically “twisted”… or taken out of context in an attempt to show that the 7th day Sabbath is now obsolete or changed to another day.
"Honor thy Father and thy Mother." We know from our youth that we are called to obey our parents as commanded by the 4th Commandment. But what about once we're grown and out of their home? Today Fr. Mike doles out some advise for adult children on what obedience and respect for one's parents looks like and what the Catechism of the Catholic Church has to say about this relationship.
