Back to close out the first week of the year with lots to uncover on all of the latest and greatest in the world of sports. On deck: (2:50) We've just about reached the final hurdle of the NFL season. Week 18 begins on Saturday as teams are looking to punch their ticket to the playoffs. I'll keep you up to date on who's set, who controls their destiny, who needs help, anything and everything that you need to know about what to expect this upcoming weekend. I'll get into a few of the major storylines (Ravens resting Lamar Jackson, AFC/NFC South division up for grabs, Bills win or go home in Miami?) as we wrap up this sprint of the past four months and gear up for a highly anticipated postseason. (24:32) The National Championship in college football is set. Michigan slayed the semifinal beast in eking out a win against Alabama, while Washington hung on at the end to beat Texas. I'll review both games and have an early look at the title game on Monday night. I'm a few days late, but I'll spend two minutes on the embarrassment that Florida State put forth in the Orange Bowl loss vs. Georgia. (36:44) Are the Oklahoma City Thunder ready to take that next step and be a contender in the West? Even if they're a year or two early? What about the Lakers? They're going in the opposite direction as they've lost 8 of 10 and have been relatively healthy this year. At 17-18, are there any concerns about the short and maybe long term future of this team? I'll check on whatever else is happening throughout the Association as we get closer to the midway point of the season. (47:07) Maple Leafs sniper, Auston Matthews is having an MVP caliber year as he scored his 30th goal in 35 games with the OT winner last night in Anaheim. Is he the frontrunner as the league's best player to date? I'll take a trip around the ice as I'll peek at who's been hot (Oilers, Hurricanes & Kraken) and who's not (Wild) at this juncture. (51:36) The power is still down on the MLB Hot Stove as we're waiting for some of the game's best players (i.e. Blake Snell, Cody Bellinger, Matt Chapman, etc.) to sign on the dotted line. The Red Sox inking pitcher Lucas Giolito for two years doesn't cut it. It's almost time to get festive and celebrate another holiday season, but before that there's plenty of sports talk to get into as the latest podcast has arrived. On deck: (2:59) As steady, and at times, spectacular this season that the Dallas Cowboys have been, they've been bad in a big spot on the road. Further evidence was yesterday in Buffalo where they were drubbed 31-10 by the Bills. Do you trust this Cowboy team on the road against a stout opponent? They have another shot where they go down to Miami on Christmas Eve to see if they can silence the critics, including yours truly. There's an interesting development with both Souths in the AFC & NFC. You have the Jaguars, who have hit the skids with a three game losing streak, now tied with the Texans and Colts for first place in the AFC South. The Buccaneers impressed and won a huge game in Green Bay, while the Saints keep pace with Tampa after beating the Giants at home and Atlanta (after a bad loss on the road in Carolina) are only a game behind both teams for the top spot in the NFC South. I'll share my disgust with the Steelers effort over the past three weeks, rumors about the possible end of Mike Tomlin as coach. I'll uncover all of the up to the date playoff scenarios in each conference, other news throughout the league (i.e. Chargers firing coach Brandon Staley. Is Bill Belichick not far behind?) as we're down to the final three weeks of the regular season. NOTE: I made a mention of the 49ers losing Super Bowl LIV to Miami, not in Miami. Of course, they lost to Kansas City. My apologies for the faux pas. (32:05) A few records were snapped and came to a halt in the NBA. Steph Curry had his streak of 268 games of making at least one three pointer ended in a win vs. Portland. Kings guard Keegan Murray made eleven straight three point shots (an NBA record) in a win vs. Utah. And Bucks forward, Giannis Antetokounmpo got the game ball he deserves as he's the all time leader in franchise history when it comes to rebounding. Also, the sad passing of former big man, Eric Montross who succumbed to cancer at the age of 52. I'll keep you abreast of what the latest is throughout as the Clippers have been scorching, the Spurs snap their 18 game losing streak and the Pistons have lost 23 consecutive games and counting. (44:09) The NHL has been rather low key, although you have a big loss with Dallas Stars goaltender Jake Oettinger out with a lower body injury for the foreseeable future. How will that impact them in the short term? Plus, whatever else is happening on the ice. (48:30) MLB's Hot Stove has been cool for the most part, but the Dodgers continue to reload as they've traded for Rays pitcher Tyler Glasnow and gave him an $136 million dollar extension. Is Japanese pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto on their radar to complete an enormous offseason of transactions?
