What's the problem with antibiotics anyway? On this episode of Vitality Radio, Jared passionately answers this question. There is no antibiotic that doesn't cause harm. That's not to say they don't have their place, but as Jared explains, they are almost never necessary and almost always prescribed for common problems like UTI's and sinus infections. You'll learn why many infections don't need, and won't respond to antibiotics, the ramifications of even a single dose of antibiotics, and how antibiotic superbugs are a real problem. Jared delves into why antibiotics are overused, side effects of particularly dangerous forms, and the effects on mental health and the immune system. This show will be followed with one on antibiotic alternatives and ways to rebuild your microbiome after antibiotic exposure.Additional Information:#264: Emotional Vitality: Jen's Story Part 1 - From Addiction and Mental Illness to Vitality#266: Prescribing Poisons Part 2. I was on a second opinion call with a runner. She developed a stress fracture in her accessory navicular bone. If that wasn't enough, she then started having pain in her arch in the tendon that pulls on her big toe. That tendon is called the Flexor Hallucis Longus Tendon, or FHL Tendon. Can an accessory navicular stress fracture cause flexor hallucis longus tendinitis in a runner? Well, the short answer is yes, and I am going to explain how in today's episode of the Doc On The Run podcast.
In this episode, Cathy and Chris discuss the relatively common condition of bicipital tendinitis in the dog or inflammation of the biceps tendon at the shoulder joint. This comprehensive overview covers the following:Anatomy of the forelimb, specifically the shoulder and biceps muscle/tendonCauses from overuse/repetative stress to traumaClinical signs such as lameness, tenderness, reluctance to exercise and atrophyDiagnosing via physical exam, imaging, and joint fluid analysisTreatment options from conservative rehab/modalities to injections to surgeryPrognosis and potentially prolonged treatment and activity restrictionPrevention via weight management, proper conditioning & cross training, and minimizing risksAlthough recovery can be frustrating at times, the key is to catch bicipital tendinitis early and abide by appropriate treatment protocols for a swift recovery. Active dogs may require long-term care and preventative measures to reduce the likelihood of recurrence.Support the showDisclaimerCheck out VitalVet.org for all PetAbility Podcast episodes related to rehabilitation as well as a plethora of other resources and product information.MedcoVet (show sponsor) - the next generation in laser therapy by putting healing in the hands of the pet owner! Today's episode comes from a comment on one of the YouTube videos on peroneal tendinitis. A limping runner asked the question: “Can peroneal nerve tendinitis cause fifth metatarsal to be tender to the touch and when walking, I am not sure if I have a stress fracture.” When I read this comment, I became confused because I am not sure what is going on with this runner, but I am going to try to explain and answer the question as best I can in this episode. Can peroneal nerve tendinitis cause fifth metatarsal pain? Well, that is what we're talking about today on the Doc On The Run Podcast.

We all know that injuries are the biggest impediment to our continued progression and improvement. The longer you can get in uninterrupted training, the more consistently you'll improve. That said, there's a lot we can do (or at least should be doing) to modify our training to reduce the risk of injury. To help us dig deep into exactly what these elements are, we're interviewing Ethan Paster. Ethan is a Doctor of Physical Therapy and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and has extensive experience working with runners one-on-one to keep them healthy and build back safely from existing injuries. We're going to cover… When it's okay to run through and injury and when it's not (and how to go about it safely) The most important modifications you can make to your training to decrease injury risk How to deal with pain management when returning from an injury And much more. Welcome to Wednesday Q&A, where you ask questions and we answer them!In this Wednesday Q&A, we answer your questions about bursitis and tendinitis in the hip, mouth taping, and why we don't do seated forward folds in LYT. Your questions:1. I have a yoga student that was diagnosed with bursitis and tendinitis in her left hip. She's 33 years old. She had a scan three weeks ago, then had a cortisone shot just after that. The cortisone shot has not given her any relief at all. She has been in a lot of pain. Both sitting and standing. Has seen a physio on a few occasions and has been given exercises but unable to do them due to too painful. Her previous exercise included gym work with weights and some cardio. Lately, she has been doing quite a bit of lifting and moving heavy objects around as she has a little business with pots and ornaments. She was advised to ice it, but she has found that heat has given her a small amount of relief. She's going back to her doctor next week for further advice. I would appreciate any suggestions you can give at this stage to help her.2. What do you think about melt tape for sleeping? I sleep with my mouth open, suffer from dry mouth at night and was thinking of trying it thoughts. Good, bad?3. Can you speak to why we don't practice traditional seated forward folds in the lip method? Achilles tendon injury on one leg and a calf muscle strain on the other leg? Talk about a bummer: 2-for-the-price-of-1 overtraining injuries! Yes, it is possible to get similar running injuries on opposite legs, at the same time. Today I had a conversation with a runner who has developed both of these injuries from running. These are actually just opposite ends of the same biomechanical spectrum at work. During the call I was explaining to him how it can happen, and how he could make some simple changes to prevent it from happening again in the future. How can running on the road cause Achilles tendinitis in one leg and calf strain on the other? Well, that's what we're talking about today on the Doc On The Run Podcast!
