His coaching program helps speakers define, refine, and present their ideas in a fresh, impactful way. Getting Paid for Speaking: Alan shares practical advice on how to get paid well as a speaker, including the importance of honing a signature speech, speaking consistently, and negotiating fees based on value. He highlights the value of speaking, whether paid or not, in front of your ideal clients to generate new business opportunities. Speaking Opportunities Everywhere: By continuously improving and repeating key speeches, speakers can maximize their impact and create new opportunities for future engagements. Notable Quotes: “When you hear ‘I've got a story for you,' you're already leaning in.” “Our ordinary lives, with their extraordinary emotions, are what people connect with.” “If you can move one person with your TED Talk, you've got a TED-worthy idea.” “The best way to get booked as a speaker is to keep speaking. Well into his adulthood, Alan Samuel Cohen heard a family story that shifted his sense of self, his identity. While sitting together at a family dinner with his adult siblings and aging aunts, one of those older women mentioned a specific violent incident that occurred before the family moved to America. She spoke of it clinically, historically, without anger or emotion, though it involved a violent murder that her father, Alan's grandfather, had witnessed. Being Jewish was always part of his identity, but it didn't seem particularly meaningful until that moment. He and his sisters started to ask questions, and learned more about the incident and the events that took place afterward. It was those stories that shifted Alan's perspective about hate, about racism, and about bigotry of every kind. In this episode of Your Stories Don't Define You, Alan and I discussed the story, how it affected him, and how he's showing up differently now, when it comes to racism and hate. --- From his website: "For over three decades Alan Cohen has worked with business leaders as an executive coach, senior marketing professional, and human resources consultant. He is also a TEDx speaker and has written books on authentic connection in a digital age, and how to manage conflict and difficult conversations in the workplace. Prior to becoming a coach, he worked in PR, marketing and human resources for over 25 years, most notably as the Director of Marketing for Scholastic, where he led the team that was responsible for launching the Harry Potter book series, and as Director of Communications for the Broadway League, where he publicized the Tony Awards. Even as a kid, Alan always wanted to be a publicist.  How does a child know about PR work? Growing up in New York City, his father worked as a publicist for ABC television.  He was surrounded by all the 8x10 glossies of his TV heroes and all he saw was the glamour of the profession. After college, Alan became a successful publicist, working in TV and eventually in publishing where he worked publicizing the Harry Potter book series.  It doesn’t get better than that. As the publishing field changed, Alan made some moves into marketing and communications. Then the financial crisis of 2008 hit. Alan completed his coaching training at the same time and started his coaching business, building upon his insights and experiences as an executive. In this episode we discuss: How Alan currently runs his own business as an executive and team coach, and corporate instructor, coaching leaders and teams at companies like MetLife, American Express, Skadden, Arps, Tiffany’s, NBC, and countless other PR and marketing agencies.  Alan ran the publicity team for the Harry Potter books and describes it as a shining moment for him.  He delivered his first TEDx talk in October 2019 at the Whitaker Center for Science and the Arts, called “The Magical Power of Shared Purpose.” Alan has authored two books, The Connection Challenge: How Executives Create Power and Possibility in the Age of Distraction and Those Difficult Talks for PR Pros. Today's guest is Alan Samuel Cohen, an executive coach and author of the book The Connection Challenge: How Executives Create Power and Possibility in the Age of Distraction. But in the late 90s he was the Director of Marketing at Scholastic, where he and his small team were tasked with the awesome responsibility of turning a first-time author's quirky novel about a boy wizard into a global phenomenon...And that's precisely what they did.I was introduced to Alan through our mutual friend Tim David, my guest on the most recent episode of this podcast, and quickly discovered we were kindred spirits.Alan and I chat about imposter syndrome and the surprising way jealous can actually be force for positive change, the primary function of a leader and how to bring out a team's best qualities, and Alan shares multiple stories of chance encounters with lasting impact, including plenty of good stuff about working with JK Rowling in the early days.RELATED LINKSAlan's WebsiteThe Connection Challenge (book)Connect with Alan on LinkedIn
