Jerry Carita (last seen on Hungry Trilobyte in Episode #185) returns for our milestone 200th episode! Tonight, we're talking about The CloakRoom, an anthology series born out of a writing course by Scott Snyder. There's so much to cover here-- the value of anthology fiction (particularly anthology GENRE fiction), Scott's work with the Batman universe, and the opportunities new writers can take to have their work seen. As a fun aside, Jerry and I wrap up with a granular look at how Superman works at a writer's level, and he gives me a chance to brag on a great discussion I had with Billy Mays III in Episode 88! — See Show Notes at www.AaronBossig.com Follow me on BlueSky & Instagram - @AaronBossig

Once the Heroes had regrouped, they looked up to the large seating platform. The fantastically dressed man looked down at them with utter disdain. Their antics had removed all of the other competitors. Not only that, the creatures in the cages had been subdued by the small skeletons before they could even be set loose. The entire spectacle had been thrown into chaos. There could be no further rounds of competition. The Jester pointed at the fantastically dressed man, as if asking for him to award them their prize. What he received in response was not the large red jewel, but the fantastically dressed man storming away shouting. This was immediately followed up by the sound of loud horns. These were not triumphant, but rather a gathering of guards. They flooded the arena, quickly surrounding the Heroes. The Heroes readied their weapons once more, facing down dozens of guards. The Female Combatant nervously readied her damaged axes, unsure of how they would get through this new predicament. She knew the Heroes were strong, but fighting an unorganized group of mercenaries and arena hopefuls was much different than an organized royal guard. As the guards began to close in on the Heroes, a loud cracking sound could be heard from just outside the arena. The crowd erupted in a wave of panic, their joyous cheers for the battle turning into terrified screams as the first signs of danger rippled through the arena. Spectators in the stands scrambled to their feet, pushing and shoving, desperate to escape the impending catastrophe. As they made way, a large blast shot through the stands sending pieces of debris falling onto the arena. One unfortunate combatant was hit across the face with. piece of stone, sending blood and the remainder of both of his teeth flying into the dirt. A massive hole had been blown into the arena from the outside. As the dust cleared, the Heroes saw a figure standing in the newly formed gap. The Warrior Hero triumphantly walked into the arena, happy to see his old friends again. As he did so, other shadows emerged behind him. Old friends that the Heroes had met on their journey had joined the Warrior Hero on his trek, eager to assist those that had helped them. It was a sight to behold, and the crowd watched on in terror. Though they feared for their safety, they could not look away. The ragtag gang made their way into the arena behind the royal guards, ready for combat. The royal guards had been sure of their position, but now found themselves outnumbered. They threw down their weapons in defeat. Thank you so much to Jerry for the conversation! More than any other episode in our 275 plus now, this one hits home for me and is the most personal version of me you are likely ever to get on the show. If you've listened to our commercials over the month of September, you should already be familiar with the UnSeen/UnHeard Anthology on Kickstarter, a 64-page anthology that collects 12 new comic short stories about dealing with disabilities or being neurodivergent. I fall into both those camps and rarely get to chat with comics creators who do so it should be no surprise that I'm excited to talk with today's first time guests, co-editors Aubrey Lyn Jeppson and C.K. Carpenter. The challenges that creators with disabilities face is numerous, I've personally turned down quite a few comics projects as a colorist I'd love to have worked on because I didn't want to commit and ultimately let people down and regular listeners will know that from time to time I have to take a break and Jimmy kindly makes sure to keep us on a regular release schedule here on the podcast. These are our stories and this is a unique window into a rare opportunity many disabled creators have to tell them. Please consider backing the project at the link below. unSEEN/unHEARD Anthology on Kickstarter Need a PFP? Make sure to hit up Lane Lloyd Synopsis From the editors that brought you Scott Snyder Presents Tales from the Cloakroom vol. 1 and the Ringo-nominated creator of Etheres comes unSEEN/unHEARD: Disability & Neurodivergence, a 64-page anthology that collects 12 new slice of life, romance, sci-fi, fantasy, and horror short comics about dealing with disabilities or being neurodivergent. It was vital to us that stories about neurodivergent people and those with disabilities be told by people with those conditions. Similarly, creators with these conditions often find it difficult to make comics consistently, from financial barriers to constant interruptions to the creative process because their energy must go to simply...existing. As such, we wanted to produce this anthology to give those who might not usually get to tell their stories a platform to do so. The anthology covers a wide spectrum of conditions: AuDHD, Ankylosing Spondilitis, Traumatic Brain Injury, Dyslexia, Spinal Cord Injury, Misophonia associated with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Tourette Syndrome, Blindness, Fibromyalgia, CPTSD, and more. Furthermore, intersectionality and representation of other marginalized communities is a pillar of Unseen Alchemy Publishing. As such, expect to see 2SLGBTQIA+ and BIPOC representation in our stories. Anas Abdulhak, Aubrey Lyn Jeppson, and C.K. Carpenter comprise the editorial team. All three of us either have a disability ourselves or are neurodivergent, which was important to us in the formation of this anthology. All three have experience running crowdfunding campaigns: Aubrey Lyn Jeppson and C.K. Carpenter produced the first volume of Scott Snyder Presents Tales from the Cloakroom, and Anas Abdulhak has handled campaigns for such comics as Kill My Boyfriend and Objects in the Mirror. Our episode sponsors From Within on Kickstarter From Within is a martial arts revenge graphic novel about a slave fighting his way through a deadly tournament where the rules shift at the whims of a tyrannical emperor. It's a mash-up of the high-impact action sequences of Bruce Lee's films with the paranoid thriller undercurrent found in Ed Brubaker & Sean Phillips' Sleeper series. Late pledges are enabled if you happen to hear about it after the campaign officially ends. Arkenforge Play TTRPG games? Make sure to check out our partner Arkenforge. In it's infancy, drummer Jason Gagovski's band Sweet Cobra, was always a 4 piece unit; a giant, crushing, throbbing and roaring missive of urgent importance. The move from 4 to 3 piece however was not their decision, as Matt Arluck had cancer that ultimately took his life, leaving them at a loss for a moment until deciding to move forward as a trio. Sweet Cobra's sound has historically been a highly evolved echo of the giants that came before them. And they are still are that, albeit one that has grown it's sound exponentially on their new record Threes (Hawthorne St), where melody and nuance and reverb state their case boldly and successfully. Jason is the engine behind the band and is not only a talented drummer but a gifted graphic designer who freelanced for a long time before landing his current gig at the Field Museum here in Chicago. In addition to maintaining Sweet Cobra, Suicide Note before it, touring with Cloakroom, creating a side project with Sarah Olmsted called Rows Arc, he's also a proud father of young man that has highlighted and augmented his entire reality and that clearly is evident on this new record of his.
