Relationships are more transactional than we admit. Psychologist Orion Taraban explains what men and women actually want versus what they say! [Pt 1/2]Full show notes and resources can be found here: jordanharbinger.com/1212What We Discuss with Orion Taraban:People often can't accurately describe what they actually want in relationships. Women may say they want kindness and safety, but these qualities only matter from men they're already attracted to. The key insight: watch what people do, not what they say they want.According to Orion Taraban, people are always in relationships with their perceived best available option. This involves both emotional connection and practical value calculations. While this framing may feel uncomfortable, it helps explain why purely psychological dating advice often falls short.Contrary to popular belief, there aren't different strategies for short-term versus long-term relationships in modern dating culture. Since sex typically precedes commitment, the path to long-term relationships requires first succeeding at short-term attraction dynamics, then maintaining those behaviors over time.Men tend to cheat while staying in relationships (often due to opportunity rather than dissatisfaction), while women are more likely to cheat as a way to transition to better relationships. Women may also engage in "consecutive cheating" — ending one relationship and immediately starting another, which technically isn't infidelity but serves a similar function.Focus on attraction first, everything else second. The most practical takeaway is understanding that attraction must be established before other relationship qualities matter. Whether you're looking for casual dating or marriage, you need to first master the fundamentals of becoming attractive to your target demographic. This means being honest about what actually creates attraction rather than what you think should create it. Stay tuned for the second part of this two-part episode (airing later this week), where we'll dive deeper into specific strategies for building and maintaining this attraction in both short and long-term contexts! And much more...And if you're still game to support us, please leave a review here — even one sentence helps! Why what isn't said can communicate more than what is spoken. We often speak in hints and half-truths, not because we can't be direct, but because subtlety protects our relationships. “An awful lot of the time, we don't just blurt out what we mean,” says Steven Pinker. “We hint, we wink, we beat around the bush — counting on our listener to read between the lines, connect the dots, catch our drift.”Pinker is the Johnstone Professor of Psychology at Harvard University, a celebrated linguist and cognitive scientist, and the author of twelve influential books. His latest, When Everyone Knows That Everyone Knows: Common Knowledge and the Mysteries of Money, Power, and Everyday Life, explores how our shared understanding of awareness — what Steven refers to as common knowledge — and the way we signal it, governs everything from friendships to authority to negotiations. “Common knowledge is what ratifies or annuls social relationships, and that's why blurting something out that contradicts the assumptions of the relationship can blow everything up and be deeply awkward.” In this episode of Think Fast, Talk Smart, Pinker joins host Matt Abrahams to discuss why humans lean on innuendo, euphemism, and strategic ambiguity. They examine how culture and context shape what we hear, why our social fabric depends on more than just literal meaning, and offer practical ways to refine our communication by paying attention not just to what we say, but to what others know we know.To listen to the extended Deep Thinks version of this episode, please visit FasterSmarter.io/premium.Episode Reference Links:Steven PinkerSteven's Book: When Everyone Knows That Everyone KnowsEp.91 Um, Like, So: How Filler Words Can Create More Connected, Effective CommunicationEp.225 Speaking Fluent Internet: How Algorithms Are Changing the Way We Speak  Connect:Premium Signup >>>> Think Fast Talk Smart PremiumEmail Questions & Feedback >>> hello@fastersmarter.ioEpisode Transcripts >>> Think Fast Talk Smart WebsiteNewsletter Signup + English Language Learning >>> FasterSmarter.ioThink Fast Talk Smart >>> LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTubeMatt Abrahams >>> LinkedInChapters:(00:00) - Introduction (02:23) - Why We Speak Indirectly (06:39) - The Role of Context (10:35) - Cross-Cultural Perspectives (11:51) - Hypocrisy as Social Glue (13:43) - Clarity, Conciseness, & Grace (17:07) - Metaphors We Live By (20:06) - The Final Three Questions (24:02) - Conclusion ********Thank you to our sponsors.  These partnerships support the ongoing production of the podcast, allowing us to bring it to you at no cost.Build a better website with Squarespace today. He delves into the historical significance of Zanzibar, its cosmopolitan nature, the Omani influence in East Africa, and the slave trade's impact. First, we touch base on my opinion about what I believe is the best course of action for people with platforms during politically volatile times. I also discuss what it means to be American to me. After, we talk about the difficulties of taking the high road when people create multiple potholes for you along the way. At the end of the day, you can never expect people to perform higher than the level they show you that they're at. If someone negatively impacts your energy, you should still take the high road but learn how to gate it and maintain social courtesies.

Charisma is a word we hear all the time, but what does it really mean? Why are some leaders able to draw people in, while others push us away? I've been fascinated by this for years, wondering why we're drawn to certain people, what makes us follow, and how charisma shapes our lives in ways we don't always notice. In a culture where stories and leaders are constantly competing for our attention, understanding charisma feels more urgent than ever. That's why I'm excited to talk with Molly Worthen. Molly is a historian and journalist whose new book, Spellbound, digs deep into the history of charisma in America. She traces how charisma has played out from the era of the Puritans and prophets, through conquerors, agitators, and experts, all the way to today's age of gurus and influencers. Each era reveals something about what we long for—and what we risk—when we put our trust in charismatic leaders. In this episode, we explore what charisma actually is, how it both unites and divides, and how these waves of charismatic movements have shaped our culture and our faith. We'll talk about the stories that draw us in, the identities we build, and how to stay grounded as followers of Jesus when everything around us feels like it's shifting. If you're trying to figure out who to trust, how to stay rooted, or just want to make sense of all the noise, this conversation is for you.Molly Worthen is a professor of history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a freelance journalist. She teaches courses on North American religion and politics, global Christianity, and the history of ideas. She writes on these themes for The New York Times and has contributed to The New Yorker, Slate, The American Prospect, Foreign Policy, and other publications. She has also created video and audio courses on the history of Christianity and the history of charismatic leadership for the Great Courses and Audible. Voices of VR Podcast – Designing for Virtual Reality

Walkabout Mini Golf is really an incredible accomplishment of VR design with its fusion of worldbuilding, compelling physics-based gameplay, the unique social dynamics and community it's able to cultivate, and over 4 1/2 years of consistent DLC courses every 8 weeks or so. They have launched 33 total courses, and just recently announced that they're bumping the price by $10 and adding 6 DLC courses into the base game so that is now 14 courses for $24.99. It's still an incredible deal, especially considering that there are still 19 DLC courses available, which has helped earn the #20 spot on Meta's best-selling Quest apps of all time. During my trip to SXSW, I had a chance to speak with the original solo developer of Walkabout Mini Golf, Lucas Martell, who has since grown the Mighty Coconut Studio team to 35 people. We talk about how their design process for courses starts with worldbuilding, but also how his script-writing background has helped to inform how they tell the story of each of these worlds through the evolution of game mechanics and shape language that each course is exploring. After I had a chance to interview Martell, I was given access to all 33 of the courses, which I have played through over the past week in order to provide a bit more context on what they've been able to accomplish with Walkabout Mini Golf. It's certainly an achievement within VR design that combines the best part of immersive worldbuilding, convincing gameplay, and compelling social dynamics that keeps players coming back again and again.Be sure to check out the table below which lists the timeline of the release of the 33 different courses that are now available. Talking in-depth with writer, linguist, and anon AMRX Mark II, a dissident voice from the Pacific on escaping the cults of ideology, the yearning for identity in a "no place" like Hawaii, and what it means to walk away from ideological affiliations. Political beliefs as personal alibi, the sickness of escapism, the craving for heroes, identity formation and linguistics, cultural alienation and mimicry. Objectivism and disillusionment, the false theatre of Hawaiian sovereignty movements, the psy-op of Mauna Kea, the flattening hybridization of Pidgin, and Hawaii as a laboratory of empire. We talk about Substack as a space for intellectual deprogramming/engineering, the ritual of purging belief systems, and the existential loneliness that drives the search for meaning. Code-switching, mirror languages, sovereignty as theatre, linguistic education, the bridging importance of Sanskrit, to finally becoming your own guru—no cope, no hero, no group—emphasizing self-improvement and personal responsibility.ExcerptsHawaiian Local Identity Here is where cultures seem to come to die. I see everyone around me losing their heritage. Like all the kids I grew up with they're all children of immigrants and they did not identify with their parents' languages or cultures at all. In many cases they couldn't speak their parents' language and they, were trying, they were like me.They were trying to find some alternative identity and so we were all alienated. And I think that's quite common here, but people just don't talk about it.On Hawaiian Pigeon Pidgin is a very complicated thing in Hawaii because people have this strange relationship with it. People use it as a marker of local identity, but it's also something that they're ashamed of…As a thought experiment for decades now, I've thinking about how pidgin can become like this new fusion identity in Hawaii. And one idea I had for a stack was writing about how the Hawaiian sovereignty movement here totally rejects pidginOn Mauna Kea as Psy-op I think purpose of the psy-op was to distract from the military operations going on near Mauna KeaOn The Role of Social Dynamics in Political AffiliationsOne of the major reasons I got sucked into all of this was just social, really. That's the sad thing. I am an extreme introvert, and I find it very difficult to talk to people. The thing about all these different cults is that if you believe that everyone, you deal with, is on the same page as you, then socialization becomes very easy. Affiliations as Surrogate Identity I've noticed that a lot of Objectivists are in the same, are in a similar position to me. There's like these Objectivists who come from non-white backgrounds and they want to be some sort of weird and some sort of new thing.Ayn Rand herself and her own inner circle, they were all Jewish, but they were, they wanted to be something other than Jewish. They were trying to run away from it. And I was like them. I see that in hindsight now. I didn't wanna be Japanese. I wanted to be like this weird like new, what I've called new objectivist man, that was, not Japanese, not Asian, not anything. So all these ident, all these cult identities were attempts to run away from who I was and I just regarded so as just so cringe now, not that I embrace who I am, I still have identity issues, but I don't think signing up for a group and is really the answer anymore. But it, it was just so easy.So I poured all my energy into learning Japanese and I went to university in Japan. And that was just a complete disaster. Because I realized I really did not fit in there. The language is not the problem. I could do the classes I could do the tests, I could write the papers. That was not the issue. I, it made me realize how superficial my idea of Japanese identity was just because I could speak, read and write Japanese didn't mean I really belonged there. And I realized, yeah, this is just not for me anymore. And then I started doubling down on the Objectivist stuff, because as I just mentioned, objectivism is like a, is like for non main, like people of color…like this weird surrogate identity.AMRX Mark II Get full access to Leafbox at leafbox.substack.com/subscribe
