American comic book artist and writer
POPULARITY
A year ago, Scott Morse found himself adrift, severed from a stable income and a defined creative path. Panic was an option. So was fear. Instead, he chose collaboration and creation. This Ink Runs Cold: Short Stories from the Space-Crime Continuum smashes two of his favorite genres between its pages. It's an anthology of one-page pulp stories written by 89 different writers, all drawn by Scott Morse and colored by José Villarrubia. Many of these writers are seasoned comic veterans, animators, and filmmakers. The table of contents includes Mike Allred, Brian Michael Bendis, Jorge Gutierrez, Derek Kirk Kim, Dave McKean, Fábio Moon, Scott Mosier, Eric Powell, Stan Sakai, and on and on and on. Even better, for our purposes anyway, This Ink Runs Cold includes numerous comic book newcomers, including us - Brad and Lisa Gullickson! As of this writing, This Ink Runs Cold has one week left on Kickstarter. Scott Morse and Allen Spiegel Fine Arts offer two editions: the Full-Color version featuring José Villarrubia's wizardry and the limited Black and White Noir version, showcasing Scott Morse's beautiful brushwork. Having knocked out some stretch goals, those backing the Bookplate and Noir/1-2 Punch tiers will get an extra book, The Brush-Offs. This is a 24-page bonus book featuring unused art, abandoned pages, scripts, an alternate prologue/epilogue, and an analysis of this unique writer/artist collaboration. We're beyond honored to contribute one page to This Ink Runs Cold; we're practically in disbelief. Today's podcast is the first time we have featured a story we helped create, and it's an incredibly emotional experience. We're grateful to Scott Morse for coming on the show, explaining how This Ink Runs Cold grew from a mini-devastation, and why this intense injection of collaboration reinvigorated him. We also had the opportunity to explain what our short story "The ADHD P.I." means to us and how it helped us process some anxiety and self-loathing. Working with one page was ridiculously challenging, and what's most exciting is seeing how 88 other writers tackled that challenge and used that finite space in infinite ways. We also start this week's episode with our recent trip to WonderCon and an LAX nightmare we will never forget. If you're here only for the Scott Morse chatter, we won't begrudge you for skipping ahead, but you'll miss out on another outlandish story. This Week's Sponsors: You wake in a hospital bed. Your hand feels heavy, there's a ringing pain in your head. Machine parts have replaced what could not be repaired with flesh. Did the doctors save you, or strip you of your humanity? This is the question facing Adam in Futility Shapes, a one-shot comic live on Kickstarter now! Created by Edward Kane and Dave Fowler. Futility Shapes is a weird blend of The Terminator, The Machinist, and Mass Effect. What shapes you? Visit EdwardKane.net (spell out the name for ease) We're also sponsored by the sponsored by 2000 AD, the greatest comic you're not reading! Within its pages is a whole universe of characters, from Judge Dredd and Strontium Dog to Rogue Trooper, Shakara, Halo Jones, and the poor sods slogging across the Cursed Earth in The Helltrekkers. Get a print subscription at your door every week - and the first issue is free! Or subscribe digitally, get free back issues, and download DRM-free copies of each issue for just $9 a month. That's 128 pages of incredible monthly comics for less than $10. Plus, the Beyond the Cape Podcast. If you enjoy Comic Book Couples Counseling, you'd undoubtedly enjoy their show. Beyond the Cape is a laid-back talk show in which every episode highlights their love of this beautiful comic book medium, their personal journey with it, and the respective artists they feature on each podcast. This June will mark their second anniversary, which we certainly recognize as a massive accomplishment. Yes, we have THE Mike Allred: father of Madman, creator of Doop, iZombie, and so many others, artist extraordinaire, and lover of comic books! If you didn't know, Mike started out in broadcasting, first on the radio and then as a TV reporter in Europe. But soon he's back in his native Oregon, chewing up the independent comics scene with graphic novels like Dead Air, Graphique Musique, and Grafik Muzik, as well as contributions to Creatures of the Id. One of those stories featured Frank Einstein, who Mike would go on to mold into his iconic Madman character. After Madman-ing it for a decade, Mike made for Marvel next, where he collaborated with Peter Milligan on X-Force (later X-Statix), then Matt Fraction on FF, and Dan Slott on Silver Surfer. He even found time to create and launch iZombie, which was adapted in a TV series. Now, he's at DC, tackling the big boys in Superman: Space Age and Batman: Dark Age (both with Mark Russell).Go back The Marvel Art of Michael Allred on Kickstarter here: http://kck.st/3YykYum. Or, more specifically, we did X-Force issues #116-129, after which the team changes their name to X-Statix because... ya know what, just listen to it, we break it all down! It's Adam's turn to pick an all time favorite creator for us to dive into, and no surprise here: it's MIKE ALLRED! And to really dive right into the deep end immediately, we're swimming through the technicolor madness that is Madman Comics 1-11! It's simultaneously an ode to zany 60's superhero comics, a time capsule to the indie comics scene in the 90's, and a timeless pop-art masterpiece. We talk at length about how off-the-wall bonkers it is, while still maintaining accessibility to new readers. Support Tales From The Short Box by joining our Patreon! patreon.com/BraveNewWorldsComics

To start, Death Ratio'd…man this is a work of genius. Where did you start with this scary look at a social media nightmare future? How do you personally feel about social media?Do you feel like this is where we're heading? Laci's art reminds me of Steve Pugh's in a way, which makes me wonder, do you look for a certain kind of art style when you have the chance to find a collaborator? What do the sight gags - giant carrot, Fruit Coffin - look like in the script? Is there a theme or question you keep coming back to in your work? Why?If Death Ratio'd were a song, what would it be and why?Elliot SmithBatman: Dark Age has launched, your follow up so to speak to Superman: Space Age, how would you say these two titles are similar, how are they different? Was it daunting recontextualizing and rejiggering Batman's origin?Mike Allred…thoughts?Marvel listed FF: Life Story to prepare for the new MCU FF movie, any thoughts on what they might be pulling from your work?Speaking of Marvel, you're writing a story in Blood Hunters, what can we expect?
KAY EYE ESS ESS EYE EN GEE! Another excellent week for comics as Will reads Carnage Reigns, Thor by Donny Cates vol 6: Blood of the Fathers, Doctor Strange by Jed MacKay vol 1: The Life of Doctor Strange, and Extreme Venomverse. Steve reads two very different intersections of mutants and celebrity culture with Uncanny X-Men: Poptopia (#394-398) and the first issue of Peter Milligan and Mike Allred's X-Force (#116).
30 year comic veteran Mike Allred sits down with Dave for an extensive conversation about comics, music and film. Mike shares stories about his early encounters with comics and talks about the critical role that family plays in his career. The two discuss Barry Windsor-Smith, Neil Gaiman, Star Wars, the Original Art Expo, all things Batman - past and present - and discover that they agree on most things, even the weather. www.youtube.com/westcoastdavengers

I met Ben Dewey (Autumnlands, Beasts of Burden, Namor, Vampirella, The Tragedy Series, etc. etc.) about 20 years ago when we worked together on a Roller Derby comic. He's been one of those guys in comics that I'm always happy to chat with when I get a chance ever since. He picked Dan Slott and Mike Allred's Silver Surfer run to discuss. Mike Allred is one of the greats and Dan Slott... well, he's fine, too. Find out why Ben picked this run, and hear him compare drawing comics to being a musician in more ways than one. For their image to be carried swiftly around the globe, many have paid a terrible price and many will again. Dignity, privacy, humanity, everything for sale just so long as a person in line at the grocery store knows their name. Fame and celebrity name a ritual act, a sacrifice. They are the keys to the kingdom, a means of ascension. But also a gateway to omnipotent madness. "For someone who calls himself Mr. Sensitive, that was totally tactless."

We have a special treat for you today. I'm sitting down with comics creator Nick Cagnetti to talk about his break out series Pink Lemonade from Oni Press. Pink Lemonade is one of the most unique things I've read in quite some time and it couldn't drop at a more relevant juncture as Nick examines the exploitation in comics and more broadly in all our entertainment mediums in the book. It's got a real throwback quality to it that evinces the illustration styles of Jack Kirby mixed with the zaniness of Mike Allred's Madman. I loved this book. We also talked about Nick's contribution to the Xino anthology also from Oni, a weird surrealist science fiction series that reminds me of Black Mirror. I hope you enjoy this episode and make sure to pick up a copy of the Pink Lemonade trade in stores now. You can find more of Nick's work on his website, Instagram, and Twitter. There are many things we, as the Word Bros enjoy. Ice cream, puppy dogs, a fire on a brisk fall evening, and Pink Lemonade. Not the tasty summer drink but the amazingly original comic created by cartoonist Nick Cagnetti. Hang on! Dan Slott joins Comic Book Couples Counseling for an epic, in-depth conversation about his Silver Surfer run, which he did in collaboration with Mike Allred and Laura Allred. No other comic has had as profound an impact on our relationship as this one, especially when you consider that Dawn Greenwood and Norrin Radd were the inspiration for the podcast. In many ways, we've spent our entire time on this show preparing for the deep-dive chat you're about to hear. In creator corner conversations, we usually do our best to avoid spoilers. However, this is an intensive exploration of the Slott/Allred Silver Surfer run. We encourage you to read the entire thing before venturing within as we start with the end and work our way backward. We promise you that Dan Slott has never discussed this series in this much detail or from this particular angle. Slott offers a second opinion on the Dawn & Norrin romance. We throw at him the lessons we learned throughout our five previous Silver Surfer episodes, and he reflects a few ideas and rejects some others. He walks us through his emotions while creating the series, and his dreams for what more he could have said if given a few extra issues. Yes, we discuss several deleted scenes. A new printing of the Silver Surfer omnibus from Marvel Comics arrives on March 7th. Make some space on your bookshelf, because you don't want to miss out on this one like you did the first one.
