Having spent years developing his craft as a live performer and songwriter, touring with the likes of Ali Barter, Husky and Gretta Ray, Melbourne-based musician and producer, Gamilaroi man Tyler Millott found a whole new rhythm with the debut of his solo project, The Terrifying Lows, in 2018. This episode I chat with The Terrifying Lows about is recent single 'Blackout'. We discussed creating moody, broody music, the pros and cons of changing up your sound and what to expect from the next The Terrifying Lows album.
Welcome! My guest today is Melbourne songstress, songwriter + vocal coach Mezz Coleman, mum of 2 children, aged 16 and 11.Mezz grew up with music all around her. Her parents took a leap of faith and began a music therapy business, her siblings played as did her friends. It was so normal to see people make a living from music. Having been immersed in it from a young age, it was quite organic that Mezz would spend her life making music. She began playing the piano from a young age, dabbled in the flute and guitar. Straight out of high school Mezz went to Uni to study a jazz improv course. Her son was born in her final year of Uni, so Mezz has never experienced her music career without having children.Mezz has released 3 studio albums, Parts of You, Parts of Me in 2010, Words in 2015 and a Christmas Album in 2015. Mezz is currently recording her third studio album, a chamber indie-pop record, produced by Rohan Sforcina (Oh Mercy, Kate Miller Heidke, Ali Barter, Ferla)Adored by folk festival audiences around the country and celebrated as “a musical treasure” (Bendigo Blues & Roots Festival), Mezz has a unique ability to conjure worlds, transporting audiences with her powerful vocals and straight-to-the-heart lyrics. Her career has seen her appear on national television on Carols by Candlelight, and open for the likes of Kimbra, multi-award-winning songwriter Sara Storer and iconic Australian artist Shane Howard (Goanna). When she's not performing her own material, Mezz's experience as a backing vocalist and session vocalist, has given her the opportunity to work with many international and national artists including Nana Mouskouri, Brian McFadden, Marcia Hines, Delta Goodrem, Barry Humphries, John Foreman and the Melbourne Gospel Choir. In 2021 Mezz toured as backing vocalist and keyboard player for The Marrollo Project's “Uninvited: The Songs of Alanis Morissette” .Mezz website / music / linktreePodcast - instagram / websiteMusic heard on todays podcast is from Mezz, used with permissionWhen chatting to my guests I greatly appreciate their openness and honestly in sharing their stories. If at any stage their information is found to be incorrect, the podcast bears no responsibility for guests' inaccuracies.
In today's episode, I'm joined by the amazing Ali Barter. Ali began her career in the hospitality industry working deep within the Melbourne café and restaurant scene. In 2008, she went back to University to follow her dream of becoming a touring musician and songwriter. In 2017 she launched Trunk, a company that specializes in group tours and bespoke travel through India. She has over 20 years of experience traveling to India! We spoke with Ali about her travel company "Trunk" in the post-pandemic era and how Australians are ready to travel to India again. Let's get started!

Described as a "DIY experimentalist" and "dream pop queen", Cosette Gobat was signed to her first record label, Decapolis Records, at age 14 in June 2012. Within that first year she released an EP called Moving On, which took off her career as a performer. Cosette started touring the east coast of the US when she was in high school and moved to Philadelphia after signing another contract with the label, KBM Productions in August 2015, with the release of an electronic pop EP, "Blindside". In Philadelphia, she went to pursue a degree in Media Production at Temple University and started playing in local bands. In 2017 she began to self-produce music and released an experimental solo project called "i tried my best" in May of that year. Cosette was working at radio stations as an on-air talent and photographer, and as an audio engineer at recording studios. She began to collect her own clients and worked with well-known artists such as The Wombats, Caroline Rose, Ali Barter, The Beths, Castlecomer, and more. In September 2019, Cosette toured the UK playing shows, primarily in the London music scene. In July of 2020 she released her sonic debut album, Couteau, which captures transformative sounds in a calm, engaging melody. She has now gained much attention for her unique and dreamy sound working with artists and producers across Europe. She released a track with Dutch producer, Van Elst, called 'Daydreamer' in January 2021. Melbourne based Ali Barter, has three EP's and two studio albums under her belt, her track Girlie Bits was voted in at number 58 on Triple J's Hottest 100 of 2017 and her album A Suitable Girl made it to number 17 on the Australian Aria charts. Jesse and Ali talk about getting into the music industry in her 20's, preparing for solo shows, writing her new EP over the internet with her writing partner in LA, learning the bass to play for the first time on tour, they run through her compact pedal board and break down tones from her solo EP Live From the Inside and tracks Girlie Bits and Backseat.
Ali Barter is a rock/pop artist from Melbourne. She joined Homebrewed to discuss how life has been treating her in isolation, the Open Mic Night's that she hosts on Instagram, how she went from a classically trained choir singer to creating fast and loud rock music, and how an incident whilst at uni started an entire female-focused movement for her. Ali also shares some details of her domestic life with husband Oscar Dawson (Holy Holy). This is one of our longest interviews yet, but I'm sure you'll agree it's worth every second. Ali Barter: Melbourne singer/songwriter Ali Barter’s musical career prospects showed promise at a young age, singing with the Australian Girls Choir until the age of 16. After a stint of partying and “running amok” in her early twenties she began to refocus on music releasing her debut EP Trip, produced by Steve Mowatt, in 2012. 2 EP’s followed, working with now partner and longtime collaborator Oscar Dawson, as well as playing the Laneway Festival and support slots for The War On Drugs and Husky. 2016 saw Ali release her debut album “A Suitable Girl” through Inertia Records which gained her huge popularity throughout the country and abroad. Recorded at the Brisbane Festival, Brisbane, 23rd September 2017. Recorded and mixed by Reuben Aptroot. The Cutaways: A relatively new band, The Cutaways have just one release to their name. Their self titled EP was released in September 2016 and the band have been hard at work, performing their impressive live shows ever since. The Cutaways are one to watch for the future.
