Prepare to be transported. Destination? Who knows, somewhere peaceful no doubt. Just get ready and enjoy the ride. My guest for this episode is making her fifth appearance on the show—Yasmin Williams (www.yasminwilliamsmusic.com), one of the most innovative and talented musicians I've ever heard. Yasmin is here to discuss her latest album Acadia, released in October 2024. Coming on the heels of her breakthrough 2021 release Urban Driftwood, Acadia establishes Yasmin as a true force in modern music. In this episode, we discuss the making of the new record—her first on a major label—and how she assembled an all-star cast of guest artists. We also talk about how her life has changed since Urban Driftwood and recording with the support of a major label. Mostly, though, we talk about the songs. The breathtaking, dreamy, evocative songs that will transport you to a better place. So sit back and welcome Yasmin Williams back to the show.

This week on Transmissions, return guest Yasmin Williams. On October 4th, she releases Acadia via Nonesuch Records. It's her long awaited follow up to 2021's Urban Driftwood, and like that record, it's beautiful—a showcase for a one-of-a-kind artist. And while the focus remains Williams' fluid and lyrical guitarwork, she's joined by a roster of ringers to help fill out the corners: Aoife O'Donovan, Dom Flemons, Kaki King, William Tyler, and Darklingside and Rich Ruth, whose vocal and synthesizer contributions can be heard on the recently released first single, "Virga." Williams first came back on the show way back in the lockdown days, but life has changed greatly for her since then. She discusses some of those changes, and opens up about her desire to create with Acadia something of a refuge from the chaos of the world. Even though the record finds her joined by an expanded cast, it feels even more personal. In carving out enough space for herself, Williams has opened more than enough for the listener too. Ahead of her fall tour dates with Brittany Howard and Michael Kiwanuka and an appearance at London's Pitchfork Music Fest in November, Williams joins host Jason P. Woodbury for a rousing conversation. Aquarium Drunkard is supported by our subscribers. Brenda Evans - Libbas barnbarnsbarn. Yasmin Williams - musiker och fan. Dom Flemons - musiker, fan och folklorist. Jeff Place - senior archivist, Smithsonian Folkways Recordings. Robert Searing - historiker och curator, Onondaga Historical Association Museum. En dokumentär från 2024 skapad, producerad och mixad av Catharina Jaunviksna, produktionsbolaget RITE.Arkivmaterial från: Southern Folklife Collection - University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Smithsonian Folkways Recordings, “Me & Stella” (33mm film by Geri Ashur, 1978), Library of Congress, Seattle Folklore Society, Incl. the Ralph Rinzler & Alan Lomax archives.

When we last caught up with Yasmin Williams (https://www.yasminwilliamsmusic.com/), her life was just about to change. It was February 2021, the pandemic was slowly but surely starting to ease, and the DC-based acoustic guitar maestro released her groundbreaking album Urban Driftwood. Full of spellbinding, mesmerizing, uplifting acoustic-guitar driven instrumentals, Urban Driftwood took Yasmin from her parent's house to all around the globe, playing festivals, selling out clubs, and doing gigs with some of her heroes. It's been a whirlwind—and two-plus years later, Yasmin is back. In this episode of For Songs Singles, we talk about Yasmin's latest breathtaking tune Dawning. As hypnotic as anything she's written, Dawning is a revelation. It signals a re-awakening of life after a catastrophic pandemic, new love, hope, and, well, pretty much whatever you want. Yasmin had help for this one, including Grammy winning singer/songwriter Aoife O'Donovan. Yasmin gushes over Aoife's magical, soaring vocals and reveals just how much her life is different from just two years ago. So sit back, listen and let the amazing Yasmin Williams take you away.

When Yasmin Williams plays guitar, it looks like she's trying to play something else. With the instrument laying on her lap, she attacks it from above with both hands, producing a kaleidoscopic array of sounds. Williams is also a fan of Earth Wind & Fire, and inspired by them she's added the kalimba, or thumb piano, to her music. By taping the kalimba to the body of her guitar, she's able to play both instruments at once; her distinct style also leaves her tap shoe-wearing feet available for her to make beats. Yasmin Williams performs her new soundtrack to Charlie Chaplin's silent film The Kid remotely, for the Soundcheck Podcast, from Brookfield Place.
Eli Winter returns! Previously appearing in a short chat for ep 47, he's back for a full length interview and an amazing new self-titled album. On this week's Talkhouse Podcast, we've got the guitarist-singer of a great young-ish band from Minneapolis in conversation with a hotshot guitarist who's just starting to make a name for herself: Nathan Stocker of Hippo Campus and Yasmin Williams. Hippo Campus formed just under a decade ago, while Stocker and his bandmates were still in high school. They came out of the gate just as you might expect: eager and excited, releasing a series of EPs followed by a bang-bang pair of excellent albums and inspiring crowds at pretty much every festival you could think of. After touring behind 2018's Bambi, Hippo Campus took some time to stretch their legs, with each member heading off into side projects of various sounds and sizes. But the band reconvened with fresh motivation and a clearer-eyed outlook last year, and they came up with a powerhouse of an album with the simple title of LP3. It's slightly more mature in the best ways, but still incredibly catchy and true to their sound. There's a lot of inward looking existential lyrics, but wrapped in fantastic hooks. It was Stocker's idea to chat with guitarist Yasmin Williams, who he had recently come across via NPR's long-running, always reliable Tiny Desk concert series. That performance was particularly captivating, because you're not just hearing what Williams can do with an acoustic guitar, but you're seeing it as well. She takes the foundation built by fingerstyle masters like John Fahey and Michael Hedges but brings a modern sensibility to it: In this conversation, she talks a lot about her love of metal and math-rock, bits of which you can almost hear in her beautiful playing. Williams has released two albums so far, and as you'll also hear in this chat, she's working on a third. The latest is Urban Driftwood. Williams and Stocker didn't know each other at all prior to this chat, but it turned out that she's a Hippo Campus fan. The two talk about gear nerd stuff, YouTube videos by Andy McKee, being in competition with yourself, and of course the inspiration for Williams' interest in music to begin with: a little game called Guitar Hero 2. Enjoy. This episode was produced by Myron Kaplan, and the Talkhouse theme is composed and performed by the Range.

The Newport Folk Festival is back with a passion. In this episode we talk to the talented Yasmin Williams, a virtuoso composer and musician who has been praised by the New York Times as “one of the country's most imaginative young solo guitarists,” and who is set to make her Newport debut this year. She will join fellow ASCAP members performing, including Beck, Grace Potter, Bonny Light Horseman, Kevin Morby, Vagabon and many others. Williams shares her feelings about joining the Newport tradition, her journey to mastering the guitar, pushing herself to learn new instruments and experimental approach to recording her gorgeous, acclaimed new album, Urban Driftwood. We also check in with Jay Sweet, Executive Producer of the Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals, about why Newport has endured as two of the oldest and most meaningful music festivals, why supporting music education is more important than ever and the joy he feels in evolving the legacy of an organization whose mission makes an impact far beyond the stage. Hearing Yasmin Williams's compositions is immediately transfixing--and then you see her play, and it's like you're seeing someone invent how to play guitar. Yasmin's most recent record, Urban Driftwood, is a masterpiece. It evokes a wide range of emotions and mirrors experiences that are somber, joyful, angry, and hopeful. We had the great pleasure of chatting with Yasmin for the RLR podcast. In this reflective conversation, Yasmin takes stock of where she is now, after a year in which she put out Urban Driftwood and is now bringing it out in the world. She talks about processing protests for racial justice through her music and how she moves from unconscious playing to conscious crafting. We hope you enjoy this podcast episode and thanks to Yasmin for taking time!By Ken Templeton

Hljómsveitin The Vintage Caravan var að senda frá sér frábæra pltötu á föstudaginn ? kraftmikla rokkplötu sem heitirMonuments.

Yasmin Williams is your new favorite guitarist! She plays the type of music she'd want as a soundtrack for hiking, which is funny to think when you consider her initial inspiration for picking up the guitar. When she was in junior high, she beat the video game Guitar Hero 2 (on expert level!). She was clearly very good at it and thought that she would also be good at the real thing. Her musical parents agree and she got an electric guitar in 8th grade. She dove right into learning songs by Jimi Hendrix and Nirvana, but realized that shredding was not for her. She got more interested in acoustic guitar and started watching many YouTube tutorials and began getting really good.In our conversation, Yasmin talks about transitioning from the Guitar Hero game controller to an actual guitar and how that continues to impact the way she plays the instrument. She also talks about the differences she observed in the way a male might play versus a female. Rhythm is a big part of her sound and she explains why it's so important. Her latest album, Urban Driftwood, is filled with instrumentals that expressive themselves lyrically without using lyrics. Yasmin has found her voice in songwriting and has taken on themes of COVID, the Black Lives Matter movement and nature. I also love her reasoning for the album name: Urban Driftwood. Don't sleep on this special musician who is also my new style icon: her bright outfits are incredible. Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brands
In this episode, Sean and Jake discuss the last few months in life in general and in music. Music covered in this episode includes Yasmin Williams, Playboi Carti, Chuck Johnson, Floating Points and Pharaoh Sanders, Home is Where, Arm's Length, Wild Pink, Nick Cave, Cassandra Jenkins, Jazmine Sullivan, and more. Programming Note: Starting with this episode, we've changed the format of the podcast a bit. We've been at this for 5+ years now, and we've learned that as we've gotten older and our lives and interests have changed, the things we enjoy about doing this podcast have changed too. The post-show discussion (which has always centered around life in general, pop-culture, sports, and pretty much anything else that came into their heads) has been moved right into the show itself! Rather than focus strictly on music, the Listen-In Pod is now a mostly-music podcast that branches out into other interests and areas of our lives. We hope you enjoy it!
You know what's cool? Watching a truly innovative and talented musician start getting her due. Yasmin Williams, the brilliant guitarist from Northern Virginia, is getting noticed by some of music's biggest media outlets—Rolling Stone. NPR. Pitchfork. The Washington Post. Yep, the world is getting to hear what we've known all along—that Yasmin Williams is one of music's most singular young talents. Her guitar work is breathtaking and her songwriting is hypnotic. And her newest album, Urban Driftwood? It's a revelation. On this episode of For Songs, Yasmin and I chat about four tunes from Urban Driftwood—Sunshowers, Swift Breeze, Adrift and Jarabi. In this her third appearance, she talks about what it's like to see her music taking off. We also discuss her expectations for touring in 2021, and of course, those beautiful songs. Listen in and welcome back Yasmin Williams to For Songs.
This is the first episode in a long time with no black metal. The only metal is some massive doom. But there's also some wind harp drone, weirdo Japanese disco, the Inanga queen, the new solo acoustic master Yasmin Williams, and some snapshots of the civil rights movement.

The #election is here! So let's dig into some of what I think is the best political songwriting of our day. In this episode, we feature four songs by different artists, each taking on different elements related to politics and these times we live in. We explore racial justice, social justice, and how we can create a better, more humane world. We've got three returning guests—Scott Miller, Yasmin Williams, and Mark Andersen—and making her first appearance is Australian-born, UK-based singer/songwriter Emily Barker. From urgent punk rock to beautiful instrumentals, and everywhere else in between, we cover it all. On this episode we feature Emily Barker's “Machine,” the Clash's “Three-Card Trick,” Yasmin's brand-new “After the Storm,” and Scott Miller's “The People Rule.” Each is distinct in its message and its sound, but they are all exemplary examples of great political songwriting.
In this episode, Ciaran chats to actor Yasmin Williams. Since graduating from the University of Wales Trinity St David, Yas has worked as a trainee producer at the Other Room Theatre in Cardiff. She has also been involved in the development of 'Small Fry' by Hannah Lloyd, in which she performed. She is currently studying an MA at the University of South Wales in Cardiff. Here she chats about her creative career so far!
When I was in high school learning the guitar, I wanted to be a shredder. I wanted to play as fast as Living Colour's Vernon Reid, Joe Satriani, Hendrix, Steve Vai—you know, the guitar maestros who could tear up the fretboard. No dice. Couldn't come close. And interestingly enough, Yasmin Williams never wanted to reach those heights. She was influenced by Nirvana and other grunge-rock bands. Then she beat the video game Guitar Hero 2 as a teenager, convinced her parents to buy her a guitar, and the rest is history. After getting bored with the electric guitar, she picked up an acoustic, learned some incredible picking techniques and continues to innovate to this day. Check out our interview where she talks about her styles, how she learned different techniques, and how she writes such hypnotic, peaceful, and beautiful songs.
YASMIN WILLIAMS is an acoustic finger style guitarist with a nod to the great MICHAEL HEDGES. Growing up in northern Virginia, her music has been commonly described as refreshing, relaxing, and unique and has been called some of the most imaginative guitar music out today. She utilizes various techniques including alternate tunings, percussive hits, and lap tapping in her music to great effect. She has won various local talent shows, was a finalist in the Rolling Stones Young Gun guitar competition, was the Grand prize winner of New York University's Ultra Violet Live talent show, and won the grand prize in Culpeper Has Talent. She was recently featured on NPR's Weekend Edition Saturday show. EMILY WOLFE transcends the ranks of ordinary musicians. Her creative songwriting keeps her fans aglow thanks to her strong, powerful lead vocals and dominating guitar style. This Austin, TX's resident rocker has shared stages with the likes of Heart, The Pretenders, Peter Frampton, Billy Gibbons and Gary Clark Jr. Wolfe a self-taught guitar player starting at the age of 5, has honed her craft over the past 22 years and has been described as a sonic merging of PJ Harvey and Jack White. Featured by the Wall Street Journal, MTV, NPR, and American Songwriter, Emily Wolfe is definitely one to watch. She released a debut self-titled, full-length album earlier this year.
