Mediaite editor Aidan McLaughlin speaks with Ryan J. Reilly, who covers the Justice Department and federal law enforcement for NBC News— he's been as tuned into the fallout of the Jan. 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol as anyone. His conversation on Press Club comes just after President Trump, on his first day in office, issued sweeping pardons to more than 1,500 individuals arrested in the Jan. 6 riots— people Reilly has been closely watching since 2021. He speaks on the astounding manipulation of public perception on Jan. 6 by Trump and his supporters, how Jan. 6 "broke the U.S. Justice System", and if he believes Trump will face any real consequences. In the second half of the episode, Mediaite founding editor Colby Hall speaks with Fox News White House correspondent Peter Doocy about his coverage of the Biden White House, and how he plans to cover Trump.

ABC chair Kim Williams has been slammed for recent comments made about broadcasters like Joe Rogan, as the national broadcaster undergoes a wave of structural changes. During his first Press Club address, Kim Williams took aim at the podcaster, saying commentators such as Rogan “prey on fear”. Mr Williams was there to deliver a speech calling for greater investment in the ABC, which he said had lost $150 million a year over the past decade, and to talk about the importance of public broadcasting in an age of disinformation designed to sow division. Williams' tenure as ABC chair comes at a time of deep disruption for the broadcaster, with the departure of many beloved presenters sparking questions about the competency of management. Today, ABC chair Kim Williams on what's ahead for the broadcaster, and whether he's in the right job. IT'S ALIIIIIVVVEEEEE!!!!! In honor of my parents and halloween being a good time to reconnect with a past life, I'm getting the Terpene Therapy Tomato Tent up and running again! I figure here's a good place to consolidate my lore expansion from this episode, I used to grow "tomatoes" with them at the house I grew up in before my mom's cancer progressed and she required advanced treatment in Texas. The traveling made it to where the grow fell apart; it simply was not a priority and cannabis didn't seem help her particular type of cancer. Certain, rare, types of cancer don't respond well to cannabis treatment. That being said, it's time to get back into it. This week we're germinating the Amnesia Lemon Hashplant from Superfluous Strains out of VA. This strain is the most similar one in my collection to the Amnesia Haze that I used to grow with my parents. Besides the nostalgic aspect, this strain should also exhibit similar rhythms to my Amnesia Haze runs. I started them in an AC Infinity Humidity Dome Germination Kit with LED Grow Light Bars using New Earth Organics Custom Seed Starting Mix and clean spring water! Aiming for 80ºF and 88%RH on a 18/6 light cycle to promote growth. Excited to see what I find! This week's session was brought to you by The Press Club! This week we're at the Terp Table/Laboratory in KY some Lime Pop living soil cured flower and some Greasy Cat Freeze Dried Flower! Pressing flower takes me back to my roots of learning to press the Amnesia Haze that I used to grow with my family. I did a Double Bag 25u at 188ºF press with 10g of the lime pop as well as a Single Bag 25u at 180ºF press to compare quality/yield! The freeze dried flower was pressed at 170ºF and yielded less than the other presses; likely because I didn't have a whole lot of material to start! Mike Burgess is the director general of ASIO. But the thing about Mike is he's actually a cybersecurity guy. He joined ASD, Australia's NSA, back in 1995 when it was still the Defence Signals Directorate. He was there for 18 years before he bounced out to the private sector for a while to work as the CISO for Australia's largest telco, Telstra. In 2017 he returned to ASD to run it, and in 2019 he was appointed director general of ASIO. Back in April, Burgess made a series of comments on the topic of encrypted messaging during a Press Club speech in Canberra. Our right to privacy, he said, is not absolute, and he implied that if certain providers didn't start helping Australian authorities out a little more, he'd use some of the provisions in Australia's Assistance and Access bill to force them to provide access to certain content. So I reached out to organise this interview to get some more detail from him about exactly what sort of cooperation he's seeking and why.

If you missed it, make sure to go back and listen to our part 1 episode with Hoynes, who has been covering Major League Baseball in Cleveland for more than four decades: https://evergreenpodcasts.com/press-box-access/paul-hoynes-part-1-im-sweating-bullets-shaking-trying-to-calm-myself-down#episodeContent Hoynes has been a Guardians/Indians beat writer since 1983 for The News-Herald (1983-84), The Plain Dealer and Cleveland.com (1985 to present). We're surrounded by uncertainty and we don't like the feeling of not knowing. But there's often hidden strength in some things that make us uncomfortable. Maggie Jackson's new book explores the research that shows that uncertainty is not a weakness, but instead can be a powerful tool for navigating complexity with creativity and adaptability. Maggie Jackson joins us from Rhode Island to discuss her new book Uncertain: The Wisdom and Wonder of Being Unsure and why we should embrace uncertainty as a catalyst for curiosity - and more. ________________________ Bio Maggie Jackson is an award-winning author and journalist known for her prescient writings on social trends, particularly technology's impact on humanity. Her new book Uncertain: The Wisdom and Wonder of Being Unsure has been lauded as "remarkable and persuasive" (Library Journal); "trending" (Book Pal); "incisive and timely-triumphant" (Dan Pink); and "both surprising and practical" (Gretchen Rubin). Nominated for a National Book Award, Uncertain was named a Top 10 Social Sciences book of 2023 by Library Journal and a Top 50 Psychology book of the year by the Next Big Idea Club. The book inspired Jackson's recent lead opinion piece in the New York Times on uncertainty and resilience. Her acclaimed book Distracted: Reclaiming Our Focus in a World of Lost Attention sparked a global conversation on the steep costs of our tech-centric, attention-deficient modern lives. With a foreword by Bill McKibben, the book reveals the scientific discoveries that can help rekindle our powers of focus in a world of overload and fragmentation. Hailed as “influential” by the New Yorker and compared by Fast Company.com to Rachel Carson's Silent Spring, Distracted offers a “richly detailed and passionately argued … account of the travails facing an ADD society” (Publishers Weekly) and “concentrates the mind on a real problem of modern life” (The Wall Street Journal). The book is “now more essential than ever,” says Pulitzer finalist Nicholas Carr. Maggie Jackson's essays, commentary, and books have been featured in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, New Philosopher, on National Public Radio, and in media worldwide. She wrote the foreword to Living with Robots: Emerging Issues on the Psychological and Social Implications of Robotics (Academic Press, 2019) and has contributed essays to numerous other anthologies, including State of the American Mind: Sixteen Leading Critics on the New Anti-Intellectualism (Templeton, 2015) and The Digital Divide: Arguments For and Against Facebook, Google, Texting, and the Age of Social Networking (Penguin, 2011). Her book, What's Happening to Home? Balancing Work, Life and Refuge in the Information Age, was the first to explore the fate of home in the digital age, a time when private life is permeable and portable. Jackson is the recipient of numerous grants, awards, and fellowships, including a 2016 Bard Graduate Center Visiting Fellowship; Media Awards from the Work-Life Council of the Conference Board, the Massachusetts Psychological Association, and the Women's Press Club of New York. For a National Public Radio segment on the lack of labor protections offered to child newspaper carriers, she was a finalist for a Hillman Prize, one of journalism's highest honors for social justice reporting. Jackson has served as an affiliate of the Institute of the Future in Palo Alto; a Journalism Fellow in Child and Family Policy at the University of Maryland; and a Scholar-in-Residence at the Museum for Art in Wood in Philadelphia. Her website has been named a Forbes Top 100 Site for Women three times. Jackson is a sought-after speaker, appearing at Harvard Business School, the New York Public Library, the annual invitation-only Forbes CMO summit, the Simmons and other top women's leadership conferences, and other corporations, libraries, hospitals, schools, religious organizations, and bookstores.

This is the first of a 2-part conversation with Paul Hoynes, who has covered Major League Baseball in Cleveland since 1983. We hit some of the “Hoynsie” greatest hits, including the Hawk Call and the tale of two belts. He tells us about working in hometown, competing (and laughing) on the beat with friends, and riding the rush of deadline. Hoynsie puts us in cavernous Municipal Stadium when the stands were mostly empty and the team was awful in the 1980s. Hear about advice he took from Joe Carter, scuffling with Mel Hall, and sailing the choppy waters around Albert Belle. We even work in a football story: Red Right 88. Sorry, Browns fans. Part 2 comes out April 24 and that episode will pick up when the Indians, now known as the Guardians, began their glorious run in the 1990s. Hoynes has been a Guardians/Indians beat writer since 1983 for The News-Herald (1983-84), The Plain Dealer and Cleveland.com (1985 to present). His “Hey Hoynsie” column has been a longtime favorite of readers in northeast Ohio. Founding Futbol is a year-long exploration of the critical moments that have led to soccer's emerging popularity in America. Before there was Beckham or Messi coming to America to play for Major League Soccer Franchises, there was Pelé and his stint with the New York Cosmos. From 1975-1977 the world's most recognized footballer spent the twilight of his career helping this country fall in love with the beautiful game.  His time playing in the North American Soccer League (NASL) provided a blueprint for what success could look like for the sport in this country. It boosted the NASL to previously unseen heights. Unfortunately, Pelé's (second) retirement also showed the continued vulnerability of America's top flight professional league. This episode explores the many layers of his time in New York and it's long-term impact on the game in the US. Our guest on this episode is Front Row Soccer editor Michael Lewis; he has covered 13 World Cups (eight men, five women), seven Olympics and 25 MLS Cups. He has written about New York City FC, New York Cosmos, the New York Red Bulls and both U.S. national teams for Newsday and has penned a soccer history column for the Guardian.com. He also was the soccer columnist for the New York Daily News for 22 years. Lewis, who has been honored by the Press Club of Long Island, New Jersey Society of Professional Journalists and United Soccer Coaches (formerly National Soccer Coaches Association of America), is the former editor of BigAppleSoccer.com. He has written nine books about the beautiful game and has published ALIVE AND KICKING The incredible but true story of the Rochester Lancers. He is also a member of four Halls of Fame, including the Eastern New York Soccer Hall and Long Island Soccer Football League Soccer Hall.
