How long does edge last? What won't you watch Jack Nicholson do? Does realism help or hurt?  And how big should a hotel room be?  In this episode Sean is joined by Timm and Jeremy to talk about 1973's The Last Detail, an adaptation of the Darryl Ponicsan book about 2 sailors assigned to escort a kleptomaniac, junior sailor to naval prison.  Considered at the time to be Jack Nicholson's greatest performance, The Last Detail delivers warmth and humor alongside utter hopelessness in a 104 minute package. email: openmicmovies@latertaterfilms.comwebsite: openmicmovies.buzzsprout.cominstagram: @latertaterfilms

For the last of our offbeat holiday selections this year, we're talking about an instant new classic for us, The Holdovers! This film bridges the no-man's-land time between Christmas and New Year's Day, when time stretches, everything seems a little foggy, and it's easy to forget what day it is. We're thrilled to welcome first-time guest, long-time friend, and Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Sanjay Salomon to discuss this film, which has many personal connections to his own youth growing up in Western Mass, at Deerfield Academy (main filming location) no less! We also talk about Alexander Payne's vision of The Holdovers as a part of the 70s film catalogue that includes some of our other favorite movies like Hal Ashby's Harold & Maude and The Last Detail, the top notch performances from Paul Giamatti, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, and first time film actor Dominic Sessa, Ryan Warren Smith's production design that captures the true spirit of a New England winter, and the amazing score from Mark Orton, which draws heavily on 70s influences like Cat Stevens and somehow perfectly evokes both the time and the place of The Holdovers. Pour yourself a tall drink of your choice and ring in the New Year with us!

We recently lost one of the greats of screenwriting, Robert Towne. His resume is almost cartoonishly good, and his influence on the craft of screen writing cannot be measured. This week, in addition to discussing the career of Robert Towne, we will be discussing his criminally overlooked, "The Last Detail," starring Jack Nicholson as a career Navy signalman on Shore Patrol escorting a prisoner. Let's see how accurate a movie that was criticized because the characters, "swore like sailors," while playing sailors is.

So in honor of Coen's commitment to collaborative comedy, we're revisiting 1987's RAISING ARIZONA, the film that established the brothers' comedic voice following their neo-noir debut BLOOD SIMPLE, and whose madcap escapades and MacGuffin-chasing foreshadow Coen's latest cinematic caper. And in feedback, a returning favorite offers up a connection we missed in our recent pairing of THE LAST DETAIL and THE HOLDOVERS. Daily Emunah Podcast - Daily Emunah By Rabbi David Ashear

The Shomer Emunim writes in his maamar Hashgacha Pratit, perek 13, it is incumbent upon us to believe that everything that happens in our lives comes directly from Hashem, even the smallest, seemingly insignificant happenings. Like the Gemara says, if a person puts his shirt on inside out, or pulls out the wrong change from his pocket, even those are b'hashgacha peratit . The reaction is always supposed to be, “Hashem, I know this was from You and I believe it was for my best.” Sometimes it is so obvious that Hashem is involved in our lives. We need to appreciate how much He cares about every last detail and how He plans everything in advance to be ready for us, right when we need it. A woman told me she was going with her mother to visit a couple of people in the hospital. It was going to be a long day, as the hospital was very far from where they lived. They were in a rush to beat the traffic, and so the mother told this woman to make sure she's by her house at a certain time. The woman saw the time was getting late. She grabbed everything she needed for the day, slipped on her shoes and intended to grab her socks and put them on in her mother's car. But she ended up forgetting about the socks, and by the time she remembered, she was almost by her mother. It was going to be uncomfortable all day without socks but at this point she had no other choice. She got into her mother's car and they started driving. A few minutes into the trip her mother said, “I don't want to forget to ask you. I have had this pair of socks in my car for weeks. I asked everyone about them and no one knows whos they are. Are they yours by any chance?” The woman looked at them and said, “Yes, they're mine. I can't believe you have a pair of socks for me in your car right now.” She later said, “Hashem had these socks for weeks waiting for me for the time that I would need them.” The woman also said, every Friday she makes it a point to do the mitzvah of hafrashat challah . One Friday last year, she went to her freezer and saw there wasn't even a drop of space to store anything. If she would make challah that day, she would only need a few for Shabbat and as usual would want to freeze the rest, but this time there was no option of freezing it. So she debated whether or not to bake the challot that day. A few minutes later, she decided the main thing is to do the mitzvah of hafrashat challah and she would somehow find something to do with all the rest of the challot . When she finally finished baking, it was getting close to Shabbat and she didn't have any time to figure out what to do with the extra challot . She called her sister to see if perhaps she was out and would stop by and bring the challot to somebody in need. Her sister answered the phone and said she didn't have time to talk as she was on the other line with someone who needed chizuk . The woman quickly asked her if she was out and perhaps knew of somebody who could use challot for Shabbat. The sister couldn't believe what she was hearing. She said the person on the other line has been back and forth to the hospital for treatments for the past year. She never had an enjoyable Shabbat since her treatments began. Today, she finally has an appetite and just got home from the hospital. She mentioned a minute before this that she wished she could have fresh challot for Shabbat. They were both in awe of how Hashem put the thoughts in this woman's head to call her sister and how He made it that this sister would be talking to that other woman to find out that she wanted the challot . Every last detail of our lives is orchestrated by Hashem. We have to appreciate His hashgacha and thank Him all the time.

A road trip through a chilly New England winter represents only one section of Alexander Payne's THE HOLDOVERS, but the film's overlap with Hal Ashby's THE LAST DETAIL goes beyond that narrative echo. As in Ashby's 1973 film, one of the examples of 1970s cinema Payne drew on for the look and feel of THE HOLDOVERS, a central triumvirate of two adults and their younger charge have a funny but imperfect bonding experience that avoids simplistic found-family conclusions. We talk through the ways THE HOLDOVERS finds nuance in its different permutations of that trio before turning back to THE LAST DETAIL to compare these films' versions of “showing the kid a good time” in spite of bitter cold and absent parents. And in Your Next Picture Show we stick up for LAST FLAG FLYING, Richard Linklater's little-loved “spiritual sequel” to THE LAST DETAIL. Alexander Payne has cited Hal Ashby's THE LAST DETAIL as one of several 1970s movies informing the look and feel of THE HOLDOVERS, but there's narrative resonance there as well, particularly in the films' central threesomes: two disaffected older adults and their troubled teenage charge, each navigating a chilly East Coast winter, a road trip, and a series of disappointments and discoveries. We begin this week by focusing on THE LAST DETAIL's trio of military-prison-bound sailors: what defines and distinguishes each of them, how their relationships change over the course of the movie, and whether the lack of resolution the film provides them is a feature or a bug. And in Feedback we respond to some alternate readings of a couple of our other favorite films of last year, BARBIE and MAY DECEMBER. The Last Detail Its part 11 of 12 celebrating 1973 and we have good old Jack Nicholson to smile and raise an eyebrow through the whole of this episode. Yes its the 1973 film The Last Detail also starring a very youn (and sane) Randy Quaid and Otis Young.  The film is a journey from Navy base to Navy prison as Signalman 1st Class Billy Buddusky and Gunners mate 1st Class Richard Mulhall escort young prisoner seaman Laurence Meadows to his final destination (well for 8 years) due to him attempting to steal $40. They get into some scrapes but ultimately its buddy movie in the cold. Please do share our podcast and come and join us on Facebook as we have a great group of people to join in with quality chat.

The year is 2000 and Brad Garoon and Jake Ziegler have swapped movie recommendations, resulting in wildly varying degrees of satisfaction. Jake asked Brad to watch Wonder Boys, Curtis Hanson's charming film about Michael Douglas getting a third (or perhaps fourth or fifth) chance at love (with Frances McDormand) if he can only get over his bad habits and help his misfit friends and students. Said circle of friends is played by Robert Downey Jr., Tobey Maguire, and Katie Holmes. They talk about the terrific cameos present, Douglas's rare turn as a nicer guy, and where this ranks in Downey and Maguire's filmographies. Brad then assigns Jake Bring It On, and Jake isn't happy about it. They discuss how Peyton Reed's movie fails when compared to other high school snapshots of the era, and how Gabrielle Union and Kirsten Dunst don't "bring" the level of quality we've come to expect of them. Can you guess which scene Brad thinks belongs in Tommy Wiseau's the Room? Other movies discussed in this episode: The Last Detail (1973), Wall Street (1987), Clueless (1995), Election (1999), GAEA Girls (2000), Princes and Princesses (2000), Almost Famous (2000), Keeping the Faith (2000), Shadow of the Vampire (2000), High Fidelity (2000), The Contender (2000), Memento (2000), O Brother, Where Art Thou? The Holdovers is set in the early 1970's at a New England boarding school where a few students have to stay on campus over the winter holidays. Cranky ancient history teacher Paul Hunham (Paul Giamatti) has to stay and supervise. Slowly, the curmudgeonly teacher, the school's head cook Mary Lamb (Da'Vine Joy Randolph), and the one remaining student, Angus Tully (Dominic Sessa), form a family-like bond. Eigil Bryld is an accomplished Danish cinematographer, known for his work on In Bruges, House of Cards, Ocean's 8 and much more. He thinks of cinematography as a kind of performance art. Making a movie means working with different people across departments who have complex and artistic personalities, and interacting with actors who are responsible for playing different characters. All these human elements of a movie must then be orchestrated in the best possible way and captured on film at one single point in time. Eigil found it a true delight to work with director Alexander Payne on The Holdovers. Payne has a great sense of humor and is genuinely interested in people and their lives, which is always a thread in his movies. Eigil had known Payne for a few years, but this was the first movie they have worked on together. He loved the script and found himself laughing out loud several times, while also finding the characters rich and poignant. The Holdovers is a 1970s period film, so Eigil and Payne had lengthy discussions of how it should look. Eigil referenced films from the early '70s, such as the Hal Ashby movies The Last Detail and The Landlord. “The problem was that everyone has an idea or recollection of what the '70s looked like, but that's probably very far from what movies ACTUALLY looked like back then,” Eigil says. “One of the things we tend to forget in the '70s, they would do everything to avoid grain. I mean, it's ironic nowadays, everybody's fighting to have grainy images. Back then they would fight to have the best possible lenses and now there's this gold rush for old lenses with lots of mistakes and half of it is not really in focus.” He and Payne went through a testing process to find the right 1970's look. At first, Eigil tested period lenses and cameras, but realized it was more about capturing the spirit of the time- early '70s mid-budget movies had a kind of freedom to them, using lots of handheld shots and mostly available light. He tested 16 and 35mm cameras, but ended up shooting digital on an ARRI Alexa Mini and worked with the colorist to create a LUT with lots of yellow tonality in the highlights. Eigil shot The Holdovers with just one camera, and was also the sole operator. Camera placement was very important, with many of the shots in the movie framed portrait-style. The Holdovers is currently in theaters. Two episodes in a week?! What a treat. Brad Garoon & Jake Ziegler are back with a look at the films of 1973. The two movies discussed come from different countries and represent popular film movements coming out of each. Jake assigns Brad Hal Ashby's The Last Detail, a road movie starring Jack Nicholson, Otis Young, and a very young Randy Quaid. They talk about subcultures of the time, and the style that many New Hollywood-era films were interested in. And by the way, when Brad says God of Carnage in this conversation, he means Carnal Knowledge.  Brad then throws it to Jake to watch Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart to Hades. They talk about this bloody, exploitative martial arts film and the deluge of similar films that came out of Japan around this time. They talk about its influence on modern franchises like Star Wars, and the clear (and admitted) influence it had on Quentin Tarantino.  Other movies discussed in this episode: The Tale of Zatoichi (1962), Blood Feast (1963), Easy Rider (1969), Carnal Knowledge (1971), Lone Wolf and Cub: Sword of Vengeance (1972), Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart on the River Styx (1972), Lady Snowblood (1973), Fantastic Planet (1973), Robin Hood (1973), The Last of Sheila (1973), Live and Let Die (1973), Magnum Force (1973), The Exorcist (1973), Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart in the Land of Demons (1973), American Graffiti (1973), The Sting (1973), Mean Streets (1973), Badlands (1973), Paper Moon (1973), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003), Last Flag Flying (2017).
