Riding the success of their albums Bloom & deadheads, Cannibal Kids have garnered millions of streams and thousands of fans worldwide and across the net. Rooting South Florida, Damian Gutierrez (Vocals, Rhythm Guitar), Dustin Diaz (Lead Guitar) and Luke Faulkingham (Drums) have proven themselves to be excellent songwriters, competent producers, and show stopping performers. Gathering major support in Miami with their refreshing tropical-pop sound, enthralling vocal melodies, infectious guitar riffs, and dancey grooves they've left their impact on the music scene and beyond. After getting signed to Shaemax Records in 2016, the band has put out several hit singles like “Troubled Mind”, “Love Girl” and “Voicemail” which have all peaked on college radio and streamed millions of times collectively. The band has been on nationwide tours, shared the main stage with the likes of Young the Giant, Knox Hamilton, Chelsea Cutler and many more. The demand for their shows has only increased over time, selling out Florida performances seven times in the last two years. Inspired by Japanese City Pop, jazz, indie and alternative-rock such as Kero Kero Bonito, Hiroshi Sato, Astrud Gilberto and Junko Ohashi, Cannibal Kids have been able to find a unique tone that thrives off of high energy and groovy tunes. Cannibal Kids are moving up and have no intention of stopping. 2021 will be full of new music, videos and online content. Over the course of the last 25 years, Polyvinyl Record Co. has grown from an idea in the heads of two excitable music fans into one of the more versatile and artistically driven record labels of its kind, working with a roster of well over 100 artists and consistently pushing independent music in new directions. In commemoration of this landmark birthday, we've put together The Polyvinyl Podcast to chronologically tell the story of how Polyvinyl has evolved over the last quarter of a century. With our host Fred Thomas, along with Polyvinyl staffers Natalie Dávila, Andy De Santis, and Seth Hubbard, we sat down and talked to just some of the folks who have been part of Polyvinyl's enduring legacy, conducting dozens of interviews with artists such as American Football, Alvvays, Japandroids, Jeff Rosenstock, Julia Jacklin, Kero Kero Bonito, of Montreal, Laura Jane Grace, STRFKR, Xiu Xiu and many more. With each episode, we'll get deep into every era, moving from DIY beginnings to where the label is at today, and reflect on how Polyvinyl and their family of artists have navigated the ever-changing landscape of the music industry while holding on to core beliefs of positivity, kindness, and good music for all you good people.
The Bugsnax are out of the bag, and we're FINALLY here to talk about them! This week we're discussing last year's smash indie hit Bugsnax, and how this cute Pokemon Snap inspired collect-a-thon about Grumpuses snacking on weird half-bug/half-snack creatures surprisingly has some of the most heartfelt queer representation we've seen in a video game in years! Before that though, we do of course talk for about 15 minutes about our boy Sora from Kingdom Hearts miraculously making his way into Super Smash Bros Ultimate, because how could we not? But once we get that out of our system, it's Bugsnax all the way down baby. Up and coming Brisbane artist Alex Lamont has just released a new EP We're vibing! Why am I not vibing? Alex Lamont is an openly queer and proud Brisbane based artist who took influence from artists such as Kero Kero Bonito, 100 Gecs, and Australia's very own Wiggles to produce their latest comedy bubble-gum pop EP. The EP touches on dealing with mental health and emotions during the love and depression that overcame Alex during 2020. If you had a 2020 like the rest of us and got down to such bops as Hot Potato by the Wiggles when you were younger, this 10-minute EP might just be your new anthem. Alex Lamont is speaking with Rhyan Holt.
The crew makes predictions about E3 2021, Nolan (finally) gets his space-hands on Elite Dangerous: Odyssey's space-legs, and Capcom battles a lawsuit filed by an artist. Its June and you know what that means, Midterms!! Its that time of the year again on My Little Underground where I bring out my big red pen and talk up some of the best music of the year so far! This week its all about the best singles and EPs six months into 2021. Listen to me talk up great singles including the new Lice (Aesop Rock & Homeboy Sandman) MF Doom tribute tune, Ask Anyone (I forgot to give the title in the episode) to the viral, anti-racism single from The Lindas Lindas. 2021 is shaping up to be another great year of EPs from the likes of former MLU guests, Lunarette, Sofia Kourtesis (I butchered her last name, sorry!!), Lord Wardd and Kero Kero Bonito putting out a daring 7 minute track (their songs rarely go beyond 3 minutes)! No more writing show notes in the third person, its weird. Welcome to week 5 of The Spotlight where Sarah Mae and Aaron highlight and discuss their favorite records! This week we highlighted two of our favorite UK bands. First off we talked about the IDLES, a post-punk band from Bristol. We talked about their 2018 record Joy as an Act of Resistance, a record that although uses a very gritty production, lyrically, front man Joe Talbot, talks a lot about masculinity and the toxicity that it holds, love and growth, optimism and the current political climate in the UK. We discuss what the title of the record means to us and how Joe uses his witty lyrics to convey their theme of joy as an act of resistance. We also highlighted the 2016 record 'Bonito Generation' by Kero Kero Bonito a London based band comprised of front woman Sarah Bonito. 'Bonito Generation' their first full length record has a very cute/electronic pop production to it. Lyrically Sarah also sings a lot about optimism and their first sense of exposure into the industry. We also talk about the differences in sound between this record and their most recent 2018 record 'Time n' Place.' Make sure to give these records a listen and let us know what you think! Join us on October 21st live from the studio for Ep. 6 Mondays at 6pm on wgmuradio.com
