In this episode we talk to Zoé Samudzi. Dr. Samudzi has a PhD in Medical Sociology from the University of California, San Francisco. Her dissertation was about German colonialism, the Herero/Nama genocide, and the afterlife of that genocidal structure in the present. Her writing has appeared in Art in America, The New Republic, The New Inquiry, Jewish Currents, and other outlets. She is co-author of As Black as Resistance, which we spoke with her and co-author William C. Anderson back in 2018. In this conversation we talk about a range of topics related to settler colonialism and colonization in Africa, specifically in modern day Namibia, Zimbabwe and South Africa. Zoé shares with us some of the historical fights between European nation states, and European settlers in Southern Africa. She also shares a little bit of history on the Nama/Herero genocide and how it was utilized by the British to undermine the German Empire. Josh and Zoé explore the relationship between colonialism and fascism. And Zoé also shares some thoughts on the film Exterminate All The Brutes and challenges US exceptionalism in relationship to our analysis of settler colonialism and genocide.  Finally, Zoé talks about museums as ongoing sites of colonial violence and we discuss this in relationship to the recent revelations about the U Penn museum and U Penn and Princeton’s use of the remains of Delisha and Tree Africa, two MOVE children killed in the 1985 bombing, whose remains were taken from their families without consent or notice. MOVE has an event scheduled for May 15th in recognition of the 36th Anniversary of the MOVE bombing. You can also see their press conference addressing U Penn.  And there’s a petition for the repatriation of the remains of Tree and Delisha, and financial reparations to the affected families.  Suggested readings from Zoé Samudzi: - Mobilizing Black Germany by Tiffany Florvil - The Problems of Genocide by Dirk Moses  - Potential History: Unlearning Imperialism by Ariella Aïsha Azoulay  - The Brutish Museums by Dan Hicks  - Multidirectional Memory by Michael Rothberg - Exterminate all the Brutes by Sven Lindqvist - Alabama in Africa by Andrew Zimmerman May is a really busy month for us, beyond this great conversation we have a number of other exciting new episodes planned. If you are able to become a patron of the show, you can do so for as little as $1 a month.

On April 21, 2021 author Abdul-Aliy Muhammad wrote an article in the Philadelphia Inquirer breaking the story of Penn and Princeton have held the remains of 1985 MOVE bombing victims  #TreeAfrica and #DelishaAfrica without permission. Since then it has been a whirlwind of action, additional reports, and discovery as more information about the depth of the injustice at the hands of these institutions continues to be brought to light. In this episode, Mike is joined by his father, former political prisoner Mike Africa Sr., and the person who broke the story Abdul-Aliy Muhammad to discuss what they know so far, what has happened since the story came out, and just how they're feeling knowing that their MOVE family members are still not at peace. MOVE's demands are as follows:The immediate return of the remains of Delisha Africa and Tree Africa to The MOVE Family. An immediate apology by the University of Pennsylvania, Princeton University, the Penn Museum, and Coursera to The MOVE Family and the Black community of Philadelphia for this racist and abhorrent behavior.Financial reparations to The MOVE Family for the continued harm and trauma caused by Princeton University, the University of Pennsylvania, the Penn Museum, and Coursera, for the profits made by the use of our relatives as teaching tools and research objects. The termination of Janet Monge from her role as curator at the Penn Museum and faculty in the department of anthropology. The creation of a transparent, public investigation led by a MOVE-approved investigator and funded by the Universities, into how these remains ended up in the Museum's possession over the past 35 years. We need everyone's help to make sure this doesn't fade into the background. No team has won back-to-back WNBA championships since the 2001-2002 Los Angeles Sparks. That means incredible championship teams like the Detroit Shock, Phoenix Mercury, and Minnesota Lynx have not been able to pull it off. Our guest on this week's Dishin & Swishin was part of that Sparks team that defeated the Charlotte Sting and then the New York Liberty to win back-to-back titles, DeLisha Milton-Jones. It is a pleasure to welcome Milton-Jones back to Dishin & Swishin.  Why is it so dfficult to repeat?  What is different in the second year than the first year? Do the 2017 Sparks have what it takes to repeat?  Do the 2002 Sparks celebrate when a defending champion gets knocked off like the 1972 Miami Dolphins celebrate being the last team to go undefeated? Insightful conversation with a person who has played with and against many of the important players and the coaches in this year's WNBA finals. Milton-Jones gives you some key things to look for early in the series. Will this be the year? Enjoy the podcast!
