Exactly eighty years ago, in the midst of the liberation's chaos, the NIOD (then the RIOD) was founded with a clear mission: to document Dutch experiences of the Second World War. In this special anniversary episode, Anne van Mourik speaks with Jaap Cohen, Eveline Buchheim, Uğur Üngör, and Arvid de Raaij about eighty years of collecting memories, experiences, and stories. They reflect on NIOD's urgent beginnings, its expansion to collect information about conflicts such as Indonesia's War of Independence and the Yugoslav wars, and the ideas and challenges of documenting more recent atrocities, from Syria's civil war to the Yezidi genocide. Why is collecting testimonies of war and genocide so vital? Why does it still matter just as much today? And how to collect digital sources about war and violence, such as the X-posts on the Ajax-Maccabi riots in Amsterdam in 2024? Image: Loe de Jong, 1950 (NIOD archive)

Another curiosity checked off my list. Thanks to Cee the Superior, we finally tackled to Peacock. It's not just NBC that;s proud as a peacock. The peacock is ubiqitous in cosmologies, mythologies, and symbology around the world and across traditions. So, I sent Cee to researching. And research she did! But the unusual happened: I researched too. And acquired someone else's research and actually read it! He's Hera's favorite animal. He's pre-eminent in India. He's associated with Osiris. There's also the Peacock Angel in what we'll call the Abrahamic religions. I learned about the Yezidi who have The Peacock as both creator God and ruler of the world. So, my notion that the Peacock was more important than just being a pretty fella turned out to be true. Come on in and listen.

In 2014, the self-styled Islamic State committed genocide against the Yezidi population in Iraq. To mark the anniversary of the genocide, Dr Inna Rudolf speaks to renowned Yezidi human rights advocate Mirza Dinnayi about what life is like for the Yezidi community 10 years on from the genocide. Inna and Mirza discuss justice and accountability, the geopolitical situation in the Yezidis' ancestral homeland, and what still needs to be done to support the community as they deal with a legacy of discrimination that precedes the atrocities of 2014. This research is being undertaken as part of a project called XCEPT, which is funded by UK International Development from the UK government; however, the views expressed do not necessarily reflect the UK government's official policies. XCEPT aims to understand the drivers of violent and peaceful behaviour in conflict-affected populations – and to find solutions that support peace. Find out more about XCEPT at xcept-research.org.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Yezidi Genocide, a tragic event that has left deep scars. Around 250,000 Yezidis, nearly half of their community, remain displaced, with about a quarter having fled the country. Over 2,600 Yezidi women are still missing, and many mass graves are yet to be uncovered. The security situation in Sinjar and its surrounding areas remains unstable, with approximately 70 percent of Sinjar's infrastructure in ruins. Additionally, the absence of a special international tribunal for ISIS crimes has resulted in a significant lack of justice and accountability. In this sixth episode of season five, we are honored to welcome Ms. Sozan Safar, President of the DAK Organization for Yazidi Women Development.

Hanna Polak's extraordinary film Angels of Sinjar details one woman's fight to find her five sisters, who were abducted and sold into sexual slavery by Isis.   Of all the barbaric acts committed by Isis, the genocide of the Yezidi people stunned the world. In August 2014 Isis carried out an attack in the Sinjar area of northern Iraq, home to the Yezidis. Men and boys who refused to convert to Islam were killed and dumped in mass graves. Thousands of women and girls were forced to become sexual slaves and many remain captive. Polish director, cinematographer and producer Hanna Polak's new documentary follows one woman's fight to be reunited with her five sisters, who were abducted, raped and sold into slavery. It's not Hanna's first foray into telling the stories of those fighting on the fringes - her documentary The Children of Leningradsky about Moscow's streetkids - was nominated for an Oscar and two Emmys. Starting with a discussion of the cult classic "The Eighth Tower," the conversation moves to map Keel's ideas onto the landscape of contemporary lore. We learn that Keel's travels exposed him to the arcane theology of the middle eastern Yezidi people. These so-called 'devil-worshipers' gave Keel the idea of a machine that projects influence over human history in the form of specters, apparitions, and religious manias. Integrating this idea with his own research, Keel proposed that the increasingly bizarre nature of UFO and cryptid encounters might be a sign that unknown occult influencers are in need of a new means of control - the Eighth Tower. This line of speculation leads to a discussion of modern esoterica, including the 'name game', synchronicities, 'dead internet', and whether the world wide web could be a trojan horse for reasserting weird dominion over our haunted planet. The conversation ends with a discussion of the psychic perils of daring to think like John A. Keel.

Our guest this week is ‘Rob', who works in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq as a language consultant with the overall goal of helping plant Kurdish churches and get the Bible completed in Northern Kurdish.  Rob has found the Kurds, though they are mainly Muslim and some Yezidi, love the Psalms, and often out of instinct pull out their mobiles to start videoing him when he reads them a Psalm in their heart language! He often proclaims Christ from the book that speaks so movingly of his sufferings and victory, and longs to see Kurdish believers develop more Psalm-singing to help them, in Christ, to make sense of their sufferings and be strengthened with hope. He shares from the remarkable history of Psalm-singing in the Punjab, 100 years after the death of Shahbaz the poet who put the Psalter into metrical form for the Punjabi churches. Might there be someone in your church who could help collect and annotate Kurdish folk tunes and use them with metrical forms of the Psalms? He also explores the ethnic identity of the Kurds - one of the largest people groups in the world without a state of their own - who are spread across Turkey, Iraq, Iran & Syria. As inhabitants of the Zagros Mountains, they are descendants of the Medes, who feature in the OT and were at the Day of Pentecost. In troubled times for the Kurds, Rob makes the point that it is not secular nationalism that gives the Kurds a secure future, nor the Western powers who divided up the Middle East after WWI to serve their own interests, but God's unbreakable covenant with Abraham, which ensures that all nations will receive God's blessing. God will ensure that the Kurds, along with people of every tribe and language and people and nation, through Christ's redeeming blood, will be part of his eternal kingdom. You can watch www.bit.ly/plan4medes to explore this biblical theme further. If you want to try singing Psalms in English, the Sing Psalms app is a great resource. Interview with Judit Neurink, an independent journalist who lived and worked in the Middle East. Trust is of great importance in her field of work. When training young journalists in Iraq she warned them that if they lie to their public, people will lose their trust. But many had no choice, as they worked for party media only interested in the truth of the party. Talking to Yezidi victims who escaped from the Islamic terror group ISIS, she was appalled to see some international colleagues breaking the trust the young women showed by talking about their ordeal. It had direct consequences for other journalists too, as many women no longer felt like talking to them. This problem she currently encounters is a result of the distrust fake news has sowed towards journalists and regular media. As a result, people become less well informed, so less able to make the right decisions. She concludes that now, plain and simple, honest and trustworthy information that is not biased or opinionated is more important than ever.

Skanda worship was popular during the Vedic Times and Murugan in Tamil. Murugan's oldest Temple dating to 300 BC has been found in Tamil Nadu and Murugan worship is spread throughout the world including Malaysia. Now there is evidence that Murugan was worshipped in Iraq, then called Mesopotamia. There is tribe  Yezdis, which scholars believe to have descended from the Tribe of Murugan. The God is worshipped in the form of a Peacock, which is the vehicle of Lord Muruga. ” The Yezidis are a very ancient people from Iraq with their calender being 6764 yrs old. About 5000 years ago Yezidis migrated from India to Afganistan, Iran, Iraq and middle east. At that time they were called children of Melek Taus same as Murugan, a God found in south of India. The religion of Yezidis share much in common with Vedic Hindus. Yezidis believe in reincarnation. Peacock finds a special place, which is worshiped as Melek taus/Murugan. No  peacock is found in Iraq or the middle east but is native to India. The language in which the Yezidi holy books are written is Avesta which is thought to be same language of Sanskrit. Lord Rama is also one of the Yezidi Gods. The temple tops of the Yezidis look much like the Hindu temples. The serpent is the totem of Melek Taus/Murugan and symbolizes the Kundalini released.” Since their founding many thousands of years ago in India, these people have always been known as the Yezidis or Yazidis. According to Eszter Spat in The Yezidis, the name is derived from ez Xwede dam, meaning “I was created by God.” Some Yezidis maintain that it translates as “Followers of the true path.” The term Yezidi or Yazidi is also very close to the Persion/Zoroastrian word Yazdan, meaning “God“, and Yazata, meaning “divine” or “angelic being“.https://ramanisblog.in/2015/01/26/murugan-peacock-murugan-tribe-in-iraq/ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ramanispodcast/message

Welcome back to a new season! With Covid-19 restrictions still in place, we bring you another Zoom panel! For this reason, the audio quality will be a little different to our usual studio sound. This week, we are joined by Sophie Chao, who we interviewed previously about her use of multispecies ethnography during her time with the Marind People and our very own Deanna Catto! Firstly, our guest this week Sophie Chao [01:49] starts us off by thinking about what we do as anthropologists in relation to the global pandemic. Sophie has had to alter her ethnographic practices because of how things have become “suspended” in the face of Covid-19. She asks us to consider how we as ethnographers and anthropologists need to adapt our methods and our ethics to suit this strange new world. How have you had to adapt your ethnographic methods? Simon [06:49] then reflects on human difference through exploration of the Yezidi creation stories. The Yezidi people are an ethnic and religious minority in Northern Iraq who have two different creation stories which result in two different “peoples”. Simon poses questions of how we, as anthropologists, are able to work with people who have varying world views about themselves and their relationship to others. How do we navigate working with people that have different world views that might be contrary to our own? Deanna [11:36] reflects on how Covid-19 has affected shared spaces, such as her dojo where she practises Karate and how her practise has been forced online. She mentions Durkheim's Collective Effervescence and how she has been able to train online with Karate masters who ordinarily are invited to large yearly gatherings. The group reflects on how Dee's virtual dojo has created an “e-effervescent” landscape. Have you had to do the awkward goodbye at the end of a zoom call? Finally, Alex [16:45] discusses the problems with field notes. He notes that as time progresses, the memories, the sights and the sounds attached to his field notes start to fade. Alex also discusses how easy it is to plant false memories. Dee mentions that even the memories of our interlocutors can be flawed and that we need to be aware of how we as anthropologists are seeing the world. Artist, Hannah Rose Thomas, began a journey of healing when she was asked to organize an art project for Syrian refugees in 2014. She went on to continue this humanitarian work of art and empathy and had the privilege to hear the stories of women in Northern Iraq and Nigeria who had survived incredible trauma and violence. She taught them to paint their own portraits which became a process of healing in restoring their own personhood, something they said was of their highest value. Many of the women painted themselves with tears of gold coming down their face and Hannah has since began compiling her portraits of the women into a book with that very title, Tears of Gold. She describes her work as giving a voice to the voiceless and uses the paintings as tools of advocacy to bring about change. Her work has been shown in Houses of Parliament, European Parliament, Scottish Parliament, Lambeth Palace, The Saatchi Gallery and Durham Cathedral.  Three of Hannah’s paintings of Yezidi women were chosen by HRH The Prince of Wales for his exhibition Prince & Patron in Buckingham Palace in 2018. April 21, 2016 | To many Americans, ISIS is a terrorist organization responsible for deadly plots in Paris and Brussels, for beheading Westerners, and for threatening America's security. The U.S. government has also recently declared the group a perpetrator of genocide. In the summer of 2014, ISIS committed genocide and crimes against humanity against ethnic and religious minorities in Ninewa province in Northern Iraq. The group forced more than 800,000 people from their homes and deliberately destroyed shrines, temples, and churches and kidnapped or killed hundreds, likely thousands, of people. ISIS decimated millennia-old communities, irrevocably tearing the social fabric of the once-diverse region. Distinguished experts in law and human rights discussed the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum's latest Bearing Witness report on Iraq, which documented crimes against Yezidi, Christian, and other ethnic and religious populations in Northern Iraq. Drawing on decades of experience, author and historian Peter Levenda turns to the novel as the best and perhaps only way to tell a story that has to be told – that hidden within the tales of America's most iconic writer of gothic horror, H.P. Lovecraft, runs a vein of actual terror. Gregory Angell, the present-day descendant of George Angell in Lovecraft's “Call of Cthulhu,” is summoned by a nameless covert agency of the US government to retrieve a sacred book from the grasp of an Islamist terror network operating out of northern Iraq, in the land of the Yezidi. Peter explains where all this comes from and how he had to continually update the book in light of current events.

Sedona: City of the Star People reveals the esoteric history of Sedona, Arizona, which author Pinkham says was known in very ancient times as Palatkwapi, the “Red House.” According to Hopi legend, Extraterrestrial Star People built Palatkwapi as a glorious city of sacred wisdom. It was here that the migrating Hopis learned their sacred rites and dances, as well as many mysteries of the universe.Since 1987, author Mark Amaru Pinkham has been blessed with the ability to envision Palatkwapi as it exists now?an interdimensional city that co-exists with the physical town of Sedona. Many of Palatkwapi’s temples continue to exist physically within Sedona in a water-worn condition, and on higher dimensions they survive in their original perfection. In Sedona: City of the Star People Mark recounts his first experiences with the temples of Palatkwapi in Boynton Canyon, the largest of the four major vortexes of Sedona, and then he shares his experiences during the following 27 years as he continuously returns to study their design and function. The book culminates in Mark’s discovery of a royal court composed of red rock temples that he now identifies as the ancient seat of the Hopis’ King of the World, the Star Being known as Masau’u. Through his direct study with the Yezidi priests of Iraq, Mark has further discovered that Masau’u is another name for the Yezidis’ King of the World, Tawsi Melek, the Peacock Angel, and that the planetary monarch is due to soon make his presence known among the masses. Could it be in Sedona?
