Dear Family,
Turning The Tables: Rachel Is Interviewed & Shares Her Family’s Secrets Of Mental Illness, Suicide, Addiction & More

Dear Family,

Rachel Steinman, the host of Dear Family, becomes the guest as her Dear Friend, Benjamin King flips the tables to interview her about her family’s legacy of mental illness, suicide, addiction, and more. Rachel was a psychology major who received her Masters in Education and multiple subject teaching credential from UCLA. She’s taught every elementary school grade, K-6 and has even been the school librarian. Rachel is a writer, essayist, and memoirist who can’t help but self-examine her own life as well as others’. She’s become a fierce and avid mental health advocate and educator working with NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness) as a lead presenter for the “Ending the Silence” program going into high schools to discuss warning signs, resources, and recovery with teens and their parents. To the outside world, Rachel has a picture-perfect Instagram family. She married her handsome and hilarious best friend, is the mother to two accomplished and beautiful teenage daughters, and rescued the cutest puppy. But like all families there are secrets; stories behind the pretty pictures because mental illness is invisible. Rachel is the daughter, granddaughter, and sister of bipolar, depression, drug addictions, ADHD, neurosis, narcissism, and suicide. She’s the half-sister and step-daughter of parents on their third marriages and a third divorce. She’s a mother doing her best to raise daughters growing up in an increasingly anxiety-filled world of social media, insane college applications and tuition. And yet those who know her, say she’s one of the happiest, most grounded, and mentally healthy people they know. But it hasn’t come easy. Twenty-four years after Rachel’s beloved grandfather jumped to his death from his high rise, she found his incomplete manuscript revealing dark family secrets. She became his unlikely ghostwriter to understand her family’s sad legacy of five generations of mental illness resulting in four suicides. With a burning desire to change the legacy her daughters would inherit, Rachel began to soul search and research. Her writing ended up not just helping her understand and forgive her bipolar mom, who came from parents who both died by suicide, it ended up saving her. Rachel has become a true believer we are only as sick as our secrets and that love and connection are the best medicine of all. By sharing her own and others’ personal stories we can heal, find community, and compassion for others and ourselves and we can live a life worth celebrating.   SHOW NOTE LINKS: Adam Kallen’s DF Episode   Benjamin King’s DF Episode   Andy Behrman’s DF Episode   Devorah Heitner’s DF Episode   Rachel’s Essay about Anthony Bourdain   Rachel’s Essay Divorced Parents Don’t Have to Suck   NAMI- National Alliance on Mental Illness   NAMI’s Ending the Silence Program   National Suicide Prevention Hotline     CONNECT WITH US! *Dear Family, Podcast Page *Write Now Rachel Website *Rachel's Blog @Medium *Rachel’s Twitter *Facebook *Instagram   PLEASE JOIN: ***Dear Family Members, the Private Facebook Group       WAYS TO HELP THE PODCAST: *PLEASE Leave a 5-Star Review.        *SHARE with your Dear Friends and Family,.      AND   ***Listen and Subscribe via iTunes!!!  ***Listen and Subscribe via Stitcher!!! ***Listen and Subscribe via Spotify!!!   Thank you! We’re talking about the impact of rural community health centers in Florida with Andy Behrman, the President and CEO, and Ben Browning, Vice President, of the Florida Association of Community Health Centers, Inc. “I know that we have a chance to make sure that at the end of the day, access to care in rural America is not going to go away.” ~Andy Behrman Andy Behrman has been in healthcare in Florida for 45 years, working in multiple areas within the industry. He was the first AHEC center director in the State of Florida before starting at the Florida Association of Community Health Centers. Ben Browning has been working with Andy for almost 10 years now, where they work together to expand community health centers and improve access for patients across Florida. “The increased focus and the strengthened interest in rural communities excites me and I’m hoping it continues its push forward.” ~Ben Browning Andy and Ben have recently been working to address issues stemming from the 340-B program. While the program provides opportunities to save money to reinvest into patients, many organizations have taken advantage of this program. Ben and Andy are both working to bring these issues to the forefront, working with legislators and the Agency for Health Care Administration to address these obstacles.

Andy Behrman is a larger than life personality, a nonfiction writer, and a national speaker. Andy was the subject of a New York media scandal for counterfeiting the Modern Art of Mark Kotsabi, the same art he once sold, putting him in federal prison for five months. Andy spent numerous sleepless nights fueled by drugs, had anonymous sex, traveled aimlessly, went on midnight binges and was even a male hustler. But before all of that, Andy had a happy childhood growing up in New Jersey, a golden boy who went on to graduate from Wesleyan University. Because he was never comfortable in his own skin he sought a high wherever he could find one and went on to change jobs the way some people change outfits, becoming a filmmaker, PR agent, stripper, or whatever made him feel invincible and bright. For years he was misdiagnosed by psychiatrists and psychotherapists, which only fueled his out-of-control euphoric highs and tornado-like rages of depression. At his most psychotic, Andy imagined himself chewing on sidewalks and swallowing sunlight. He was finally diagnosed when he was 29 with having bipolar disorder. After trying over 45 different medications, he decided to try electroconvulsive therapy, formerly known as electric shock treatment. Afterall Ernest Hemingway did ECT and Andy thought it was glamorous. Nineteen treatments later, Andy wrote Electroboy: A Memoir of Mania.  Andy lives in Los Angeles with his two beautiful teenage daughters. He doesn’t believe in true recovery for bipolar but rather feels lucky to be alive and manage his disorder by taking it one day at a time. One thing is for sure, Andy is outspoken, lively and controversial.     Show Note Links: Andy Behrman's Book, "Electroboy: A Memoir of Mania" Andy Behrman's Twitter Mark Kostabi- Modern Artist Kay Redfield Jamison's book, "An Unquiet Mind: A Memoir of Moods and Madness" Elizabeth Wurtzel's book, "Prozac Nation: Young and Depressed in America" Pressured Speech Definition Stephen Fry's Youtube Video about Andy Behrman's Electric Shock Therapy Suicide Prevention Hotline Dear Family, the Podcast

For years Andy hid his raging mania under a larger-than-life personality. He sought a high wherever he could find one, and changed jobs as some people change outfits -- filmmaker, art dealer, hustler; whatever made him feel like a cartoon character, invincible and bright. Electroboy is about living life at breakneck speed. Andy hopped on flights from New York to Tokyo and Paris at a moment's notice, spent $25,000 without a bit of thought on a huge shopping spree and stayed awake nights exploring the underworld of nightlife in Manhattan or whatever city he happened to be visiting, in search of the perfect high. But when Andy turned to art forgery, he found himself the subject of a scandal lapped up by the New York media, then in jail, then under house arrest. And for once he didn't have a ready escape hatch from his unraveling life.  Andy was misdiagnosed by more than eight doctors and even when he was finally diagnosed with this chronic illness, he was treated unsuccessfully with any regimen of medication. Ingesting handfuls of antidepressants and tranquilizers, he felt his mind lose traction. With no hope of his condition stabilizing, he turned to the last resort: electroshock therapy also known as electroconvulsive therapy (or ECT). Andy underwent nineteen electroshock treatments over the course of about a year and a half.  Electroboy is currently being made into a major motion picture. Not only is Andy working on a sequel to Electroboy, but he is also writing a self-help book for sufferers of depression and bipolar disorder. A lot of manic depressives already display the early signs of their disorder while they were still young. Andy Berman was no different. At the age of seven or eight, he was already obsessive compulsive who loved to do constant counting, checking, and cleaning. Yet it was completely undiagnosed, as the people around him saw him perfectly fine.    It was already in the 1980s when he went to college in Wesleyan University. That's when he started to spiral out of control. The easy access of drugs, sex, and alcohol only worsened his condition as he experienced a lot of manic episodes. When that happened, he was the star of the party, one of the best people to be with. He was bursting with energy that anyone easily gravitated toward him. Nevertheless, the bipolar disorder was also leading him the wrong directions that he almost failed in school.   READ FULL STORY...

In its debut podcast, PEERS focuses on one of the most covered stories of the summer, the Casey Anthony trial. Three years after the death of two-year-old Caylee, a jury found the 25-year-old Florida woman not guilty of the murder of her daughter. Shortly after the verdict was announced, those still in disbelief of Anthony's innocence struggled with how and why a mother could allegedly kill her child. Many trying to make sense of the terrible act were quick to question the subject's mental state. Noticing the prevalence of the term "bipolar" in online forums about Casey Anthony around the globe, mental health advocate and writer Andy Behrman decided to write about the issue in the About.com article, "The Casey Anthony Trial Adds to Misunderstanding Mental Illness." Responding to others' questions about whether he thought Anthony had bipolar disorder, Behrman writes about the stigmatization of the condition. In the very first PEERS podcast with host Jenee Darden, Behrman discusses his thoughts on the Anthony issue and his perspective on the high use of psychiatric medication in the U.S., including why he quit acting as a spokesman for the drug Abilify. Behrman authored a memoir about his early journey through bipolar disorder called Electroboy: A Memoir of Mania, and is currently working on a second book that exposes how major pharmaceutical companies operate.
