Success can be paralyzing.”  – Salome Thomas-EL   Principal EL offers advice for parents and teachers on supporting students while helping them navigate failure and embrace their creativity on a daily basis. Then, he shares the inspiring story behind his book, I Choose to Stay, and speaks to teachers who are entering the profession, considering leaving it, or transitioning to another leadership position in education. During this thought provoking episode, Prof. Yaneer Bar-Yam discusses the nature of complex systems and complexity science. Our discussion covers the cacophony of signals within the information environment and how complexity science provides tools for understanding system dynamics. Prof. Bar-Yam also reports his scientific findings related to the COVID pandemic which he and his colleagues at NECSI have observed. He asserts that values are emergent properties of our cultural and social systems and that values are the West's biggest vulnerability. He unpacks how our value system is being undermined. Ultimately, we are in a war of values. The conversation concludes with Prof. Bar-Yam describing what he believes is the "killer app" for today's world, which consists of a positive valued system of networked  teams of people who care about each other and who counter alienating forces. He believes that complexity science can be a a fundamental capability which undergirds global networks of intentional teams with compassionate, "can do" attitudes. Link to full show notes and resources Guest Bio: Prof. Yaneer Bar-Yam received his SB and PhD in physics from MIT in 1978 and 1984 respectively. Since the late 1980s he has contributed to founding the field of complex systems science, introducing fundamental mathematical rigor, real world application, and educational programs for new concepts and insights of this field. In developing new mathematical methods and in their application he has published on a wide range of scientific and real world problems ranging from cell biology to the global financial crisis. He has advised the Chairman's Action Group at the Pentagon about global social unrest and the crises in Egypt and Syria, the National Security Council and the National Counter Terrorism Council on global strategy, the Chief of Naval Operations Strategic Studies Group about military force transformation, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about delivery of prevention services and control of hospital infections, Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, Congressman Barney Frank about market regulation and the financial crisis, and other government organizations, NGOs, and corporations on using principles and insights from complex systems science. His development of multiscale representations as a generalization of renormalization group addressed the limitations of calculus and statistics in the study of nonlinear and network system dependencies in collective behaviors. His recent work quantitatively analyzes the origins and impacts of market crashes, social unrest, ethnic violence, military conflict and pandemics, the structure and dynamics of social networks, as well as the bases of creativity, panic, evolution and altruism. He is the author of over 200 research papers in professional journals, including Science, Nature, PNAS, American Naturalist, and Physical Review Letters, has 3 patents, and has given 175 invited presentations. His work on the causes of the global food crisis was cited among the top 10 scientific discoveries of 2011 by Wired magazine. He is the author of two books: a textbook Dynamics of Complex Systems, and Making Things Work, which applies complex systems science to solving problems in healthcare, education, systems engineering, international development, and ethnic conflict. He has taught the concepts and methods of complex systems science to over 2,000 graduate students, professionals and executives. He has been a Visiting Scholar at Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at Harvard and the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston. He is currently Research Scientist at the MIT Media Laboratory. The 302 Thoughts segment of our One Thing Series takes a deep dive into our blog post for that particular month. February is dedicated to Black History Month and we thought it was only appropriate to honor and celebrate outstanding Black educators from the past and present. This month we invited our good friend, Dr. Salome Thomas-EL, to join us to discuss his journey as an educator and how the education industry can attract more teachers of color. Dr. Salome Thomas-EL has been a teacher and principal in Philadelphia, PA and Wilmington, DE since 1987. He is currently the Head of School at Thomas Edison Public Charter School in Wilmington, DE. Thomas-EL received national acclaim as a teacher and chess coach at Vaux Middle School, where his students have gone on to win world recognition as Eight-Time National Chess Champions. Principal EL was a regular contributor on “The Dr. Oz Show” and the author of the best-selling books, I Choose to Stay and The Immortality of Influence (Foreword by Will Smith). The Walt Disney Company optioned the movie rights to I Choose to Stay. Thomas-EL speaks to groups across the country and frequently appears on C-SPAN, CNN, and NPR Radio. He has received the Marcus A. Foster Award as the outstanding School District Administrator in Philadelphia and the University of Pennsylvania’s distinguished Martin Luther King Award. Reader’s Digest Magazine recognized Principal EL as an “Inspiring American Icon” and he has appeared on Oprah Radio! And, with Joseph Jones and T.J. Vari, he co-authored Passionate Leadership: Creating a Culture of Success in Every School as well as Building a Winning Team: The Power of a Magnetic Reputation and the Need to Recruit Top Talent in Every School. His new book, again written with the two of us, is available for pre-order, Retention for a Change: Motivate, Inspire, and Energize Your School Culture. What you’ll hear and learn in this segment: Principal EL’s journey into the classroom is nothing short of a calling from above. While working for Prism sports and talking to various athletes, EL realized the tremendous impact that educators had on the lives of the athletes, and he wanted to do the same for others. Listen to why Principal EL decided to teach at the K-8 grade levels and not at the high school level. EL’s explanation of why he decided to introduce students to chess is profound and poses the critical question: in what other ways can we engage students to think critically and have fun simultaneously in schools? The conversation takes a nice turn to how schools must have a culture that supports teachers and attracts future educators into the profession. EL gets very practical on how to recruit teachers of color. Lastly, listen to EL rap and promote the power of an education. This 302 Thoughts was a wonderful follow-up to our latest blogpost, Principal Leadership at TheSchoolHouse302.com: Every School Leader Should Know These 6 Incredible Black Educators–Celebrating Black History Month “Then” and “Now” . We hope to hear from you about your favorite parts of both the blog and the interview. Please follow, like, and comment. Use #onethingseries and #SH302 so that we can find you. Anthony was able to see a previously undiscovered henge and two smaller mounds in a farmer’s field. The postholes were only evident because of the recent drought that Ireland had suffered. Anthony reported his findings and shared the videos with local television and by the next morning, his discovery had moved around the world – featured in the Washington Post, New York Times, NPR Radio and Time magazine.   In this interview Anthony shares information about the discovery and what it possible tells us about the ancient people who lived there.      Anthony Murphy on NEW henge discovery   Video that captures the new discovery THE NEW HENGE OF NEWGRANGE - A ONCE-IN-A-LIFETIME DISCOVERY   Additional video regarding the new discovery THE NEWGRANGE HENGE: A PRELIMINARY INVESTIGATION OF POSSIBLE ASTRONOMICAL ALIGNMENT   Mythical Ireland - Anthony Murphy – website   Mythical Ireland: New Light on the Ancient Past New book by Anthony Murphy (amazon ink)  For autographed copy, purchase from Anthony’s website https://www.mythicalireland.com/   The New Henge of Newgrange: A Once-in-a-Lifetime Discovery – blog post by Anthony Murphy on the new henge he and a friend discovered in July 2018     Anthony Murphy YouTube Channel – Mythical ireland   Anthony Murphy Amazon Author Page   Mythical Ireland Facebook Page   Newgrange and Bru na Boinne – World Heritage Site     SEGMENT 5 - CONCLUDE     Thank you for listening to the Thin Places Travel Podcast. Get ready for the 4th of July with Beer & BBQ pairing tips Just in time for the mid-week (don't you hate that?) holiday, The Beer Sommelier Matt Simpson and Smyrna Beer Market owner Brandon King join us to offer up tips on pairing your backyard BBQ with some tasty brews. Simpson is Siemens/Doemens Bier Sommelier Certified, a Kansas City Barbecue Society certified judge, former instructor of Beer Education at Atlanta's Emory University, and craft beer consultant.  His expertise has been featured on The Today Show, Fox Business News, NPR Radio and through many other TV, radio, and magazine appearances.  More information on his experience and services can be found at TheBeerExpert.com. King is the owner of Smyrna Beer Market by The Stout Bros. and has spent many years in the restaurant industry including co-owning a BBQ restaurant.  He also serves as a consultant to the food-service industry for menu development and beverage programs. On this week's show, we learn the difference in barbecuing vs. grilling, how to choose a beer to pair with you favorite meats including beef, pork, chicken, and turkey.  Our experts also offer advice on other fare from fish and seafood to vegetarian options like a grilled portobello cap, and even dessert beers.  We also dip into how the rubs and sauces you choose can impact your pairing selections, and how one beer might be perfect in a sauce but not as a pairing choice. The show couldn't be contained in the allotted time this week so we have an unprecedented 5th Segment for our podcast listeners.  We go freestyle in the 5th and talk about how carbonation levels impact pairing, sour beers and BBQ, Devo, Thanksgiving dinner, gravy, "New Wave" beers and whether they are even a reak beer style, aging your beers, and Brian gets a date with one of our guests. Huge shout out to Loyal Q and Brew for providing an awesome spread of BBQ for our "research."  We enjoyed ribs, brisket, smoked turkey, baked beans, mac & cheese, and some awesome banana pudding.  Give them a follow or drop by one of their Atlanta-area locations.  I can highly recommend the smoked turkey. [Running time: 45 minutes]. This is the first third of an interview recorded by Skype on December 10, 2011.  News Item:  This is the six year anniversary episode of The Future And You.  Six years ago (on December 15, 2005) the very first episode of The Future And You became globally available for public enjoyment. Back then it was in a magazine format with many guests which made the show very long. Too long some listeners said, which is why I changed it to the current shorter format. Sound quality back then was also less than it is today, since I was doing phone interviews through a traditional land line telephone instead of Skype or Google Talk.  Despite their age, I am pleased to say that my decision to keep all past episodes up and available indefinitely has proven to be a good one. All the past episodes, even the very earliest ones, continue to be downloaded at a rate that I find both surprising and pleasing. I'm also pleased at the global nature of the show's popularity. While the USA makes up about 60 percent of the audience, I have listeners in over 130 nations around the world. China tops the foreign countries, followed by all the English speaking nations (in order of population), then the developed countries in Europe and Asia and the Americas, followed finally by what seem to be all the nations that have access to the Internet.  One nice thing about doing this show is that it gets my name in front of people I could never reach otherwise. For example: The largest English-Language Technology magazine in the nation of India emailed me unexpectedly and asked me to write a feature article for their tenth anniversary issue. Digit Magazine is a slick glossy technology monthly with a circulation of 250,000.  Yeah, a quarter of a million people read this magazine. The June 2011 issue contains my article entitled "When Diamonds are no longer Precious." The editors were kind enough to include (on the same page as the article) a three inch tall color photo of me. That was nice of them. Another example: This year I was asked to contribute one of my articles to a college text book. The text book called About Philosophy (eleventh edition) by Robert Paul Wolff has just come out and contains my article "Real Discrimination against Digital People." The article could be classified as investigative journalism since I interviewed a dozen or more people to find incidents of discrimination inside virtual worlds such as Second Life and World of Warcraft. The article was originally published in H+ Magazine and can still be read online. I'd like to thank everyone who has helped to make this show a success: both those who listen and those who have let me interview them. The desire to hear and the desire to share ideas and opinion about the future is what keeps this show going. Thank you all, I appreciate your help.
