Conor Niland is a former tennis player from Ireland who reached 129 in the world during a career with some strong highlights and lowlights, all captured beautifully in his book, "The Racket. We talk about the book and his life on tour, starting as a College player and ending up playing Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open (and with pretty much everything in between). The Racket is a fascinating read, giving you a deep look into life on the professional tennis tour and I very much enjoyed my conversation with Conor.

How do you overcome ageism in today's society? Corinne Aumen, Ph.D. joins us for a conversation to talk about ageism and her new book, “Keenagers”. She is the founder of Choice Care Navigators based out of Greensboro, NC, where her company is dedicated to helping families navigate the aging process. Her passion lies in helping us reshape how we perceive older adulthood, a vision she has beautifully encapsulates in her book “Keenagers”. She is on a mission to change the conversation around aging. Especially in a culture where many avoid thinking about older adulthood until the last minute, she urges us to embrace aging in a positive light. During our conversation, Corrine explained where ageism comes from and how we have the largest demographic of people over 65 years of age with 10,000 people daily turning 65 and the highest number of people wanting or needing to continue to work.  Research shows that those living a powerful and purposeful life gain a longer life by at least 7 ½ years. If we don't have purpose that is when we start to see that negative downhill effect usually after the 18-month honeymoon phase.  Dr. Becca Levy shares a lot of research and stats on ageism and more about the impact of the 7 ½ years. Corinne urges us to get educated and to better understand that living with purpose helps increase our vitality but also how older generations impact business and healthcare. She speaks with us about stereotypes and how what we say matters. Some of those stereotypes in business might include things like:Older people can't learn.Older workers cost more money.Work is too much for them. But the benefits of keeping older adults include:Maintaining a strong knowledge bank. The social acumen.Etc.If we take an example like technology, the older generation is being left out and with having the largest population ever in an older demographic, this becomes highly impactful. Especially when a youngster is creating apps and algorithms' s that are focused on a specific demographic. And with the acceleration of AI (Artificial Intelligence) it's even more important to influence the knowledge of older generations to help us shape correctly and with fewer biases.Healthcare is another area that is impacted greatly as we will often hear doctors explain things away because of age versus the actual problem at hand. It becomes imperative that you advocate for yourself or at least have someone with you to help advocate and get the answers you need.  Corinne urges us to educate and arm ourselves for the day that each of us will eventually get to, ageism impacts everyone and we owe it to ourselves to prepare and enter it prepared. If you have questions for Corinne that we did not answer in this podcast you can find her on her social feeds on IG, FB, and LI. Want to know who has been on our most recent podcast or want to learn more about our community events, visit us at www.wilempowered.com and sign up for our monthly newsletter. Janet's life seemed like a dream come true, but everything changed when she was diagnosed with a retinal disease that rapidly stole her sight. Her marriage was in turmoil and her hope waning. Then something amazing happened, she met Jesus. She would need him more than she would know. As she continues to share, we'll hear about Janet's unimaginable tragedy. Yet, with unwavering strength and the peace that comes from her trust in God, Janet navigated the darkest of times and learned the power of forgiveness, even towards the man who took her son's life. Throughout this episode, Janet shares how her faith and unwavering belief in God's promises carried her through the most challenging moments of her life. She'll also discuss the importance of having Christ at the center of our relationships and the incredible transformation that can occur when we truly seek God's guidance. Blindness didn't slow her down, nor tragedy stop her. As an author, international speaker, and founder of JC Empowerment Ministries, Janet Perez Eckles gives a new meaning to God-given victory and success. She overcame not only the loss of her eyesight at 30, but endured the loss of her youngest son to violence as well as the acquittal of the man responsible. But rather than sink as a victim, each episode from which she rose above showcases the value of faith, forgiveness and tenacity. Though her life includes tragedy, her message and her books showcase God's power to restore any setback, heal any heartache and calm any storm. Without physical eyesight, but with a clear vision, she travels across the U.S. and internationally to empower her English- and Spanish-speaking audiences. In addition to her own five books, her writings include 32 stories in Chicken Soup for the Soul titles, Guidepost Magazine, dozens of anthologies, Crosswalk.com and hundreds of print and online magazines. The media captures her compelling story as she's been featured on the cover of Hispanic Woman Magazine, 700 Club, Desperate America (Good Morning America), Lifestyle Magazine and Focus on the Family as well as dozens of national and regional media. This book awarded author Josie Shapiro the Allen & Unwin Prize for Commercial Fiction. She says she was inspired by the feeling of pushing herself physically through amateur running and wanted to capture that feeling in words. "I wasn't like my character Mickey, I wasn't an amazing, fantastic champion and I was never as fast as she is. But I love that feeling of pushing myself physically."  LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Before Jacquie Abram began her journey as an Author and Anti-racism Consultant, she had a lucrative career in higher education that she was very good at & that she enjoyed. A career that spanned nearly two decades & by any measure should've been a successful career. But it wasn't. Because throughout her career, she experienced racism in the workplace, not the kind you see in a lot of movies, books, and TV shows about racism that occurred decades ago during a time when it was more overt & easily spotted, but the kind of racism that is more covert, hidden, & harder to prove. And so, her career was derailed multiple times by multiple employers & she suffered racial trauma that, to this day, she has not fully recovered from. And when the same thing happened to others including both of her girls after they began careers of their own, she pulled herself out of corporate America, wrote HUSH MONEY: HOW ONE WOMAN PROVED SYSTEMIC RACISM IN HER WORKPLACE AND KEPT HER JOB, a book inspired by true events & co-authored by her girls, & began selling it from the trunk of her car in March 2021. There's an old saying...one person's weed...is another person's flower. The Nature Conservancy of Canada is asking Canadians to hold back on mowing their lawns for a while. Next month a group called Asist-NL will be training people in suicide intervention protocols in Happy Valley-Goose Bay. Gerry Dooley is with the organization and he talks about the training plus some best practices to help someone who is struggling. A warning to listeners that Dooley talks in detail about suicide. Author Andrea Procter speaks with us about her book 'A Long Journey: Residential Schools in Labrador and Newfoundland' which has received an Atlantic Book Award for scholarly writing, among many other accolades. We also speak with Annie Evans of Makkovik, who was one of those who shared her account of residential schools back in April of 2018. The family of the late Ryan (Ernie) Nuke of Sheshatshiu says it's been a long nine months of waiting as the RCMP have finally laid charges in the hit-and-run that led to his death last August. Herman Montague, Nuke's uncle, shared what these charges mean for the family. The price of iron ore has hit an all-time high....Paul Gray is the vice-president of iron ore markets for Wood Mackenzie, a global researching company, and he discusses what he is seeing and how Labrador fits into that. What do high oil prices look like right here in the province? Michael Furlong, president of USW Local 5795, says it's an exciting time in the industry. This construction season in Makkovik will see a continuation of a 20- lot subdivision plus a new playground. AngajukKak Barry Andersen speaks to the plans. Meanwhile Postville Inuit Community Government is working to keep its landfill free of recyclables by recently voting on a recycling program. We reached out to AngajukKâk Glenn Sheppard. Finally, mass vaccination and home testing to slow and hopefully stop the spread of Covid-19? To tell us what's available and how this might work, Dr. Peter Lin chats with us!

“Food has become a battleground where spurious marketing labels and misinformation are used to cajole, manipulate, even shame consumers about their eating choices.”So writes Michele Payn ('93 B.S., Animal Science; '93 B.S., Agriculture and Natural Resources Communication) in her third book, Food Bullying:  How to Avoid Buying B.S., (Morgan James, 2019), recipient of the Independent Publisher Book Awards (IPPY) Gold Medal in Health, Medicine and Nutrition.Armed with science, compelling personal stories, and a lifetime on the farm, Payn challenges the way we think about food.  “I believe deeply in choice, especially when it comes to food.  I wrote Food Bullying to help people first become aware of the subtle, sophisticated, often devious ways they are manipulated and then to develop strategies for making guilt-free food choices based on their own ethical, environmental and health standards.”  Payn, also a nationally acclaimed public speaker and consultant, began her business, Cause Matters, at age 30.   “When I was at Michigan State, I knew I wanted to work in the agricultural industry and I would someday launch a business.  But I never imagined I would do that at age 30.”  One of the salient themes running through all Payn's  work is the importance of dialogue among agricultural producers, consumers, doctors, nutritionists and other key influentials in the food industry.  “Communication among knowledgeable professionals ensures that science-based information becomes the key component of food purchasing decisions—rather than marketing claims or testimonials from organizations with special agendas.”  Payn grew up on a dairy farm outside Jonesville, MI and attended Litchfield High School.  “Because of frequent visits to the beautiful MSU campus for 4-H and FFA events, there was never any doubt where I would go to college.”  Her passion for dairy cows continues as a Registered Holstein Breeder on her farm in central Indiana.  The dual degree program was challenging, Payn recalls, but the blending of the animal sciences and communication provided the career preparation she sought.   Her advice to MSU students interested in working in the food and agriculture industry:  “Despite the recent tough economic times, people in the industry are resilient; we will get through this, and there will continue to be excellent career opportunities for Michigan State graduates.”“One of many things I learned at MSU is that nothing builds strength like overcoming difficulty.   Keep your mind open to possibilities; don't limit your dreams.  And avail yourself of all the wonderful opportunities MSU offers, especially the faculty and staff whose support and guidance will prove invaluable.”    In addition to her commitment to family and career, Payn volunteers for a number of organizations, including Big Sisters, Boone County 4-H, and National FFA.  She is also past president of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources Alumni Board. Payn's work has been featured in USA Today, Food Insight, and Food & Nutrition Magazine, on CNN and NPR and many other media outlets. She is also the author of No More Food Fights! and Food Truths from Farm to Table, also an IPPY award winner in Health, Medicine and Nutrition.  MSU Today airs every Sunday morning at 9:00 on 105.1 FM, AM 870, and however you stream at home. The Matter of the Heart - Lisa Boucher - Author of the Award Winning Book - Raising the Bottom, Making Mindful Choices in a Drinking Culture , Alcoholism and Alcoholics Anonymous Lisa lived with her alcoholic mother for several years and this manifested her passion to write her book. She was also a registered nurse for 25 years and for the most part never saw a healthy approach for the treatment of alcoholics in hospitals. Most of the alcoholics were given consistent medication without a treatment for the cure. What are the signs of an alcoholic? Why do some have resistance for treatment? Carol explores the psychology of the patient with Lisa. What is a functional alcoholic? Why does Lisa believe that AA is the best form of treatment? What are some of the psychological reasons that contribute to an alcoholic? Why is a person's self esteem so vital for recovery and how does Alcoholics Anonymous foster this with their group sessions? Is a group session a replacement from a genetic family, enhancing a bond and compassion for one another? Lisa reviews some of the steps starting from the alcoholics life which has become so unmanageable to the twelfth step believing in a higher power. According to Lisa, some methods for healing could be journal writing, taking note of any childhood trauma that occurred in the person's life. Loving energy in the program can be monumental for healing. Support also creates a sense of security and inner peace. This is a fascinating podcast of how a woman learned the hard way and then gave back to mankind!

Strengthening the Skills that are Fundamental to All Others—Lindsey Biel –Occupational Therapist and Author of Award-Winning Book, Raising a Sensory Smart Child

Fine and gross motor skills, visual perceptual skills, and self-regulatory skills all play an important role in a young person's ability to participate in learning, playing, and socializing, but as an occupational therapist working with children, adolescents, and young adults, Lindsey Biel focuses on what she says underlies all of these skills and serves as the foundation for them: sensory processing. She provides the listener with an image of a paper plate that holds a hot dog, then a handful of chips, followed by some coleslaw; it isn't until it's asked to hold just a little bit of potato salad that the whole plate falls apart. “Teachers and parents need to figure out how much you can put on a person's paper plate before they fall apart, and as a therapist, I need to start building a stronger paper plate,” says Biel. She goes on to explain how she goes about doing that, which is a process that always begins with a thorough assessment of the individual's strengths and challenges.   Biel explains that sensory sensitivities exist on a continuum, with what most people would consider “pet peeves” on one end and extreme, disabling sensitivities on the other. She also discusses the relationship between sensory sensitivities and autism, examples of the range of sensitivities people can experience, a growing body of science that points to the potential causes of sensory sensitivities, and how stress impacts an individual's already compromised ability to self-regulate.   Having been in the field for over 20 years and authored two books, Raising a Sensory Child and Sensory Processing Challenges: Effective Clinical Work with Kids & Teens, Biel is a wealth of knowledge on the subject.    Visit sensorysmarts.com for a downloadable sensory checklist, information on strategies for sensory difficulties, webcasts, and magazine articles, and check out Amazon or your local bookstore for her books.

Mark Sisson is back this week with host Brad Kearns to bring you yet another essay style podcast. This time Mark will be reading you a special excerpt of The Primal Connection. This follow-up to The Primal Blueprint goes far beyond diet and exercise; delving into lifestyle factors like sleep, sun, and play and their contribution to optimal gene expression. Since it's publication, The Primal Connection has won numerous awards, including the bronze medal in the Health category from Foreword Magazine's IndieFab Awards, two silver medals (Health and Body, Mind, & Spirit) from the IBPA Benjamin Franklin Awards, and lastly, The Eric Hoffer award for best self-published book from The Eric Hoffer Project. The Primal Connection has also experienced a resurgence during a promo earlier this month, skyrocketing it to #4 on Kindle and subsequently landing it on the Wall Street Journal bestseller list.Today's excerpt is titled “Primal Thrills,” and dives into the importance of getting more excitement out of life. How could life for a hunter-gatherer be anything but an adventure? Just as our ancestors ventured to the edge once in a while, our genes expect the same from us. When you honor these impulses, you return to ordinary life refreshed and deeply appreciative of your secure surroundings, a warm shower, a nourishing meal, a group of friends to regale with your tales of adventure. We are indeed a species that thrives in dichotomy. This excerpt will guide you on how to incorporate Primal Thrills into your life with some modern day suggestions. Mark recommends a variety of different activities to try out as a source of Primal Thrills—anything and everything from slack lining to night hiking to scavenger hunts, and even amusement parks! After the excerpt, Mark even admits that it's been a while since he followed his own advice, and he and Brad discuss the importance of “avoiding stupid mistakes" when seeking out Primal Thrills.

I met with Phil Hall, whose latest collection of poems, Killdeer, has just won the Canadian Governor General's Literary Award for English Poetry. It's a sensitive, engaging, revealing work that incorporates narrative essay, life philosophy and literary criticism into its stanzas. In sharp contrast to  the arrogant, impenetrable and solipsistic, Hall's poetry is humbly presented, accessible, beautiful, pastoral, reflective and at times profound. Listen here as we talk about brown speckled eggs and fiddle tunes, imbalance and literary prize juries, lying, distraction, pain, what's important, plus theatre and spectacle,  truth and doubt.

Richard Greene's Boxing the Compass recently won the Governor General's Award for English Poetry.  Here's how the jury saw it: "Richard Greene's Boxing the Compass leaves us feeling unmoored, adrift across time and voice. The matchless long poem at its heart pulls us back to our always-moving selves, on an always-moving earth. We follow him in his offbeat but strangely familiar travels." Here's my review of the book in the Globe and Mail Originally from St. John's, Newfoundland, now living in Cobourg, Ontario, Richard is not only a poet, he's also a biographer, critic and professor of English at the University of Toronto. He edited Graham Greene: A Life in Letters (2007) and has written a biography of British poet Edith Sitwell.  Boxing the Compass is his third collection of poetry.
