This is a 3 minute sample of this week's Patreon episode, a look into the history of naming Bipolar Disorder. In 1980 the name of Manic-Depressive Disorder was officially changed to Bipolar Disorder. Why did they do that? Was it good, bad, or just something that happened? This week's Thistory History dive is a look into the practice of changing diagnostic names, and the clinical social reasons behind that.
Swirltex, the company represented by Peter Christou, develops unique membrane technologies that optimize filtration processes. The company distinguishes itself by manipulating the buoyancy of liquids to enhance filtration efficiency, which is particularly effective in industries where traditional membranes fail. This technology not only reduces energy consumption by up to 70% but also improves flux rates, offering a sustainable solution particularly useful in sectors like oil and gas, mining, and municipal water treatment. In the podcast, Peter Christou elaborates on Swirltex's innovative approach to membrane technology, which is designed to improve filtration efficiency by manipulating the buoyancy of liquids and integrating air flow. This method reduces the energy consumption of membrane systems by up to 70% and enhances flux rates, making it a game-changer in industries where conventional membranes fail, such as oil and gas and mining. The discussion also touches on the broader implications of this technology for environmental sustainability and how it can reshape industry standards for water treatment and reuse.Unique Insights:Swirltex's approach to increasing filtration efficiency by manipulating liquid buoyancy and using air flows represents a significant innovation in membrane technology. The company's focus on industrial applications where conventional membranes are less effective showcases a strategic move to tap unexplored markets.Their technology not only addresses the efficiency but also significantly cuts down on energy use, marking a step forward in eco-friendly industrial processes.Key Ideas:Innovative Membrane Use: Swirltex's technology uses a combination of air and water flow to prevent fouling and improve the efficiency of membrane filtration.Energy Efficiency: The technology significantly reduces the energy required for operating membranes, which is crucial for sustainability in resource-intensive industries.Market Adaptation: Swirltex has successfully adapted its technology for challenging applications like oil and grease-heavy industries, where traditional membranes struggle.Environmental Impact: By improving the efficiency and reducing the energy consumption of membrane systems, Swirltex contributes to environmental sustainability.Cultural and Operational Shift: The technology developed by Swirltex necessitates a shift in how industries think about and implement filtration systems, moving towards more sustainable and efficient practices.Counter-Intuitive Facts:Energy Reduction in Filtration: Swirltex's technology uses air to manipulate buoyancy, which counter-intuitively reduces energy consumption by 70% compared to traditional methods .Application in Difficult Industries: Unlike typical membrane applications, Swirltex successfully operates in sectors with high fouling risks like oil and grease industries, traditionally challenging for membrane tech .Adaptability to Market Needs: Swirltex's strategic focus on non-traditional markets for membranes allows it to tap into new areas, proving that membranes can be highly effective outside conventional settings like municipal water treatment .Full Episode: https://dww.show/how-swirltex-nearly-crushed-its-founder-before-taking-off/Hosted by Ausha. Lauren believes that she's gotten her interest in the philanthropic and not-for-profit industry, from her mother. Rutkin says, "I do think that I learned that from my mom. My mom was always someone who gave back." Thinking back of what her home life was like after her parents divorce, Lauren says "my mom was present, but not in the way teenagers need, -in the critical ways, she wasn't present."Unfortunately, mental illness played a big part in Lauren's mom's inability to properly care for her daughters. Later on, under the care of her doctor, medication helped and she was very good at her job at Head Start. "She did feel like her life was saved in some ways by some of these medications. She was able to raise her adopted daughters very effectively," says Lauren. Lauren believes her mom had a gift though she was very troubled.Lauren's mom definitely had some limitations and problems but she had a huge heart and worked very hard as a social worker.Unfortunately, Gail's two biological daughters suffered after the divorce because Gail was unable to give them the crucial things that her girls wanted. Yes, their mom was present, but not fully and that was very hard for Lauren to understand.Head Start and Early Head Start programs are free, federally funded programs designed to promote school readiness for infants, toddlers, and preschoolers from families that meet income eligibility requirements. Early Head Start programs support pregnant women and families with children younger than age 3 years. There's so much more to Lauren's story. It wasn't until her late twenties that Ellen Forney noticed that her friends couldn't really keep up with her. Ellen had boundless energy that took the form of dancing for long stretches at home, smoking a lot of pot, vibrating with intense sexuality, and latching on to new friends who were just as unrelentingly intense as she was. But to Ellen, this was just her living her best life. It wasn't until these episodes were followed by intense, debilitating crashes of depression that she thought something might be wrong here. A psychiatrist walked her through the various symptoms of bipolar disorder and, despite a heap of early denial, Ellen arrived at an understanding that this was a condition she had. From there, it was a long road of treatments to get her stable.Ellen Forney tells her story and the plan she developed for herself and others to take care of mental health. It involves a monster named Smedmerts (she is a cartoonist so of course she drew Smedmerts), whose name is a helpful acronym.Get your copy of Rock Steady: Brilliant Advice From My Bipolar Life, as well as Marbles and Ellen's other books, by visiting her website, EllenForney.com. Sara & Nicole have an unexpected guest that they usually try to keep at an arm's length - their feelings.
Whatever your impression is of Bipolar Disorder, today's guest, Kenton Hall, will disrupt it. We travel to the UK to chat with him about his new book and his life. His book, Bisection: A More or Less Accurate Account of Bipolar Parenting and Twin Wrangling, has been critically acclaimed. He writes that though there have been countless tomes on mental health and raising children, only his and Harry Potter have similar themes, and his story is shorter and contains fewer owls. His reason for writing it is not to give the reader self-help, and not only to entertain, but to help people to understand mental illness and to offer hope for others living with Bipolar Disorder. He gives an unflinching account of his life, from boyhood in Canada with a father eventually diagnosed as Manic-Depressive and being made to live in a cult, to his penniless flight to the UK, where his talents as an author, actor, musician, director and parent blossomed, as well as his Bipolar Disorder.
Dr. Hanson and Forrest continue their ongoing series on “Who Am I” by focusing on a subset of the depressed mood states which we covered in our last episode in this series: bipolar disorder, formerly known as “manic depressive.”This episode explores:What distinguishes bipolar disorder from “typical” clinical depression? The different types of bipolar disorder. The range of symptoms that might accompany bipolar. What bipolar disorder “looks like” in an everyday sense.Depression and depressed mood are major problems for many people, and the material we’re going to get into today will be sensitive in nature. If things start to feel uncomfortable, feel free to skip around or turn it off altogether. I met Paul Mort in a business mastermind almost a decade ago. At the time, he was a personal trainer running boot camps in England and had built it up to 17 locations. He was brilliant — but at the same time — crazy, and a roller coaster. Throughout the years we became close friends as I watched him build and sell companies, all while struggling personally with bi-polar disorder – which wrecked havoc on his health and family. This all came to a climax when in 2014 he was on the edge of a cliff ready to jump and take his own life. What happens next is not only incredible, but also inspirational. As Paul took the step back, he made the decision to turn his life around in every way. He has since became unstoppable in the areas of business and fitness. He also saved his marriage and family. Today he is off the lithium medication and helping other men turn their lives around. Paul came and visited me in Slovenia to hang out for three-days and we decided to shoot this podcast because his story is too powerful — and full of lessons that I believe will help others transform — not to. Let's go. IN THIS EPISODE YOU’LL LEARN: What stopped Paul from jumping off the cliff – and the question that could turn your life aroundWhen you’re feeling down or depressed, the steps to change that “state” which helped Paul breakthroughHow to get out of the movie that you’re playing in your head by asking yourself THIS series of questionsWhy things don't turn out great when you start a sentence with, “I feel like…”, and what you should say insteadHow to create avoid creating a strategy that ends up making you feel like crapThe happiness list and how to instantly improve your daysHow to know when you’re being true to your vision of success as opposed to chasing someone else version of itHow to match up 'what's behind the scenes' and what you're actually putting up on stageHow Paul was able to scale his business with ONE marketing platform and build a million dollar businesses. In these crazy-making times, more people than ever think about seeking help, but some hesitate because of stigma. Today's guest, Edward M. Hallowell, M.D., a renowned psychiatrist, takes us on an unflinchingly candid tour behind the scenes with his new book, Because I Come From a Crazy Family: The Making of a Psychiatrist. As a boy, he heard the call to become a psychiatrist. His childhood was surrounded by dysfunction, which he later identified as mental illness. His father was manic-depressive, his mother was an alcoholic and his stepfather was abusive. Later, when asked “Why do you want to become a psychiatrist?” he would answer, “Because I come from a crazy family.” Dr. Hallowell's desire to become a psychiatrist came from a place of love–he loved his family and wanted to help them. He credits his love and connection to his family, friends and mentors, as the thing that helped him beat the odds and build a happy, successful life, even if it was seasoned by many harrowing moments.
Joe Sessel found his purpose serving an 11 year term in Federal Prison. From age 19 to 30. In prison Joe found a love for books, sought out mentors, developed his physical fitness and refined his focus to add value to the world. For Joe prison became a limitless library and training ground to become his best self. Today he uses the skills, knowledge, and wisdom acquired from his prison days to be a serial social entrepreneur, a supply chain professional, and real estate investor in Topeka, Kansas. Raised by a single Jewish mom in Topeka, Kansas, Joe was a bright but troubled and rebellious child. He was first convicted of criminal activity at age 10 when he joined older kids breaking into a Catholic school. Failure to play by the rules and obey the law was a pattern for Joe in adolescence. His behavior earned him multiple stays in short term mental hospitals, diagnoses of everything from Acute Paranoid Schizophrenia to Manic-Depressive to Anti-Social Disorder. He was committed in 1995 for an indefinite period at Saint Francis in Salina, Kansas and spent 9 months in a mental ward in the middle of nowhere. Joe began selling drugs his freshman year in high school, and by the time he was 19 years old he was selling about $1 Million dollars of meth a month in Northeast Kansas. During this period, Joe was also a public speaker for the Shawnee County Teen Pregnancy Prevention Program and a choir singer and soloist in many choirs, including a performance of Gustav Mahler’s 8th symphony with the Kansas City Symphony Choir and Washburn University Choir. On May 7th, 1999, 3 days after his 19th birthday, Joe was arrested for possessing $172,000 of meth in a federal investigation called “Operation Heartland”. During the 11 years he spent behind bars, he was able to focus on himself and find purpose. Using his brain and his skills for good became a focus of his life after asking the question “who am I and what kind of person do I want to be?” He was 21 years old the first time he considered these questions seriously. An autodidact with an abundance of time, Joe pursued studies in Philosophy, Literature, Language, Communication and Intelligence theory, Law and Medical Science, Business, Real Estate Investing, and Neuro Linguistic Programming. Today, Joe is on the path of searching for meaning among his fellow humans. He wants to create more value in the world than he consumes, and that is a basis for his actions. His frame is one of lifelong learning. He believes that things aren’t good or bad, but instead that all events are opportunities for learning. “What is the lesson?” is always the question. Joe is dedicated to using his communication skills as a conduit for sharing what he has learned on his journey and helping people to see more and better choices in life. He believes that he has more in life than he could have ever hoped for and hopes that his gratitude and enthusiasm for life are contagious. Listen as we talk about: Why discomfort is the beginning of change Why the safe path leads to stagnation His unique perspective on the relationship between a person’s resources and their ambition Why time is such an underrated and valuable resource How to think about balancing patience with urgency and ambition Why the whole world is a prison and how to find out whats available within your boundaries How stoicism and the serenity prayer give you the power to understand what you have the power to change How to become a free man in prison by recognizing available options How leadership helps you to make up your own mind How reevaluating your premises allows you to understand something you didn’t know Why utility value is more important than truth Why being restricted in prison helped him to seize increasingly greater opportunities Why he doesn’t believe in altruism How to use your talents to create more value than you take Why you can know who Joe is through his favorite games - chess and poker How his purpose has made him a very successful real-estate entrepreneur How to maximize the opportunity to learn from somebody with talent How reframing and reexamine helps you recognize your gratitude ------------Resources Mentioned:-------------- Dune - Frank Herbert I am That - Osho Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion - Robert Cialdini The Game: Penetrating the Secret Society of Pickup Artists - Neil Strauss Count of Monte Cristo - Alexandre Dumas Brothers Karamazov - Fyodor Dostyvskey Epictetus Mr. Money Mustache Join our purpose seeking podcast community at... https://www.facebook.com/peopleofpurposepodcast/ https://www.instagram.com/peopleofpurposepodcast/ https://www.facebook.com/groups/370599930049519/?source_id=146822282503735 https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdBygSu2TxVoHXaVPgkQcsg To Contribute your Patronage to the Podcast please visit: https://www.patreon.com/PeopleofPurpose

In this episode of Waking Up Bipolar, Chris Cole speaks with Andy Behrman—author of Electroboy: A Memoir of Mania, published by Random House and translated into six languages. Behrman is a mental health advocate and speaker who promotes mental health awareness and suicide prevention, speaking to college audiences, mental health care professionals and local and national mental health support groups. Andy's writing has been published by The New York Times Magazine, New York Magazine and he is a frequent contributor to mental health websites. Behrman has appeared on Anderson Cooper 360, NPR Radio and on the cover of Bipolar Magazine. He was interviewed by Stephen Fry for his documentary, “The Secret Life of a Manic Depressive” which aired on the BBC, and he will appear in a documentary called “In His Own Mind,” a film which traces his illness over a period of decade directed and produced by Brian Cresto. Andy lives in Los Angeles with his two daughters who are ten and twelve years old and never dreamed he would attend a Parent Association Meeting. His newest projects are the feature film version of Electroboy, which is currently in development, as well as a written sequel to his book. Andy’s work is near and dear to my heart for multiple reasons. He is a male voice for mental health and shares intimate, often painful details of his life—adding disarming humor and wit—in order to increase visibility for his own life and those he serves today. As a father with two little boys, I look up to Andy as someone who trail-blazed before me and is balancing fatherhood and activism. For more with Andy, visit electroboy.com and follow him on Twitter @electroboyusa JOIN THE DISCUSSION at FB.com/groups/wakingupbipolar Chris Cole hosts the Waking Up Bipolar podcast, focused on the intersection of bipolar disorder and spiritual awakening. I am starting out recording a #personaldaily as part of #audiomo this month. In this one I expand on the idea I mentioned in yesterday's recording about the link between entrepreneurship and depression. I mention a few links/articles: http://www.inc.com/magazine/201309/jessica-bruder/psychological-price-of-entrepreneurship.html http://www.amazon.com/The-Hypomanic-Edge-Between-Craziness/dp/0743243455 And the documentary I refer to with Stephen Fry is entitled, "The Secret Life of the Manic Depressive".

Linda Naomi Katz born on March 21, 1969, by the name of Linda Naomi Baron, raised as a modern orthodox Jew, where mental illness became a factor throughout her life. It had started with her mother when she was in the fifth grade. Her mother had suffered a nervous breakdown and was diagnosed with acute depression. This gave Linda and her family a huge amount of stress. As she was growing up into adulthood, her mother's illness affected her in ways that she too would become a depressed person. Linda had difficulties making friends, developing positive relationships, and maintaining employment. After she graduated college, she also suffered from a mental illness and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Through the years she was faced with challenges that were difficult to overcome, but worked hard to achieve recovery. As part of her recovery from mental illness, she became active and volunteered for a variety of mental health organizations. Linda became a member of NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness or formerly called National Alliance for the Mentally Ill) and published articles about her life in New York City Voices, a newspaper for people with mental illness to share their personal recovery stories. Both of these agencies helped fight against stigma and other issues pertaining to mental illness. Soon after, Linda found employment working for agencies that help others with mental illness reach their goals and dreams. Today, Linda is happily married, an author who has published a book titled Surviving Mental Illness, My Story which won a Silver Medal Award by Readers Favorite for best non-fiction/autobiography and came in First Place and won the Life Journeys Award for best memoir/biography from Readers Views.
Movie Menu RANTS Podcast: A new podcast ranting in support of Robin Williams Episode #01: In Memory of Robin Williams Hosted by: Alexander Z, Dan "The Man" Muñoz, and Mike Stand Sound Engineer: Mike Stand and Alexander Z Movie Menu Reviews moviemenureviews.com facebook.com/moviemenureviews twitter.com/moviemenureview Instagram.com/moviemenureviews YouTube Channel- Movie Menu Rant: Before I begin, I’d really like to mention that while Robin Williams wasn’t the only death in 2014, his was the most significant because of the type of outlash that came against him and his family. And it’s a testament to his life that we have had so many movies to discuss on Reviews and Rants because he worked in Hollywood since 1969. He was that crazy uncle that came over and showed us a story on our screens… made us cry from laughter, saddened by his struggle, and amazed that he could scare us. In the days after the news of Robin Williams suicide, I still can’t believe what’s happened. It feels like that bad joke that’s told by many and unfunny because of it’s tragedy: In the 19th century, a doctor who was what we’d call a psychiatrist today – back then, they were called Alienists – had a new client call on him. The man was haggard and had bags under his eyes. He said he was exhausted. He couldn’t sleep, he was nervous and worried all the time, and he was afraid he was becoming too depressed. The doctor suggested his patient needed some distraction to snap him out of his funk. “I went to the music hall last night, and it has a great line-up. This one clown, named the Great Garabaldi, had me in stitches! Go see Garabaldi, and by the time you’re done laughing, you’ll have forgotten all your worries!” His patient looked at him, and quietly said, “I am Garabaldi.” How could a man with so many names: Mork, Popeye, Genie, Zevo, Doubtfire, Kosevich, Perrish, Adams, just to name a few, beloved by the world, find himself in such a situation that led to this terrible outcome? One of which even he advocated against in a movie. To be honest, none of us knew him personally except for his family and none of us can claim that he was, as many people on the internet have stated: a coward, a selfish asshole, chickenshit, or someone who made a bad choice. The latter comment coming from a fellow podcaster and several of them from FOX news and other outlets. And this is what really drove me up the walls: to hear about a man who suffered from severe depression and anxiety. Let alone his wife coming out and saying that he had early onset Parkinsons. Not just because I’ve studied psychology or have been affected by family members with depression and suicide, but because I’ve studied the link between comedians and depression passionately for the past 8 years. If you listen to the podcast “WTF with Marc Maron” you’d know exactly what I mean, Comedians whether you like or not are damaged people who seek redemption from the audience, so it comes to no surprise that the biggest celebrity suffered from depression. Many comedians suffer from bouts of mental disorders: Conan O’Brian, he openly talked about it on his show just recently, Stephen Fry presented a show called The Secret Life of the Manic Depressive, Dave Chappelle left because of anxiety, Chris Farley, Mitch Hedberg, Sam Kinison, and so on and so on, Mark Maron has 524 episode currently diving into their lives and they all seek something that ultimately drives them off the road. So Robin Williams’ death came as a shock, but it most certainly wasn’t a surprising. We looked away and forgot about our uncle and it hurt us. But, Depression is a DISORDER that is entirely separate from what you and I have when we get sad… sadness goes away. Depression stays on for months upon months, sometimes years and the affects from it can overwhelm you: Writer Andrew Solomon at the TED talks explaining what anxiety and depression feels like. So in summary, just because you feel angry with someone taking their lives, especially someone as close to our hearts as our uncle Robin Williams, don’t rush to judge him for that small act. I’m sure if you could hear him again, he’d tell you not to worry about why he did it but you should live your life as wild and crazy as him… And then he’d tell you a dick joke and make you laugh one more time. We all have the same 24 hours to work with. But there are lots of ways to get more out of those hours. We’ll give you some tips to make the job easier. Whether you work from home, work in an office, work for yourself, or for someone else, there is a tip out there that will organize, streamline, or enhance your process. 1. Stay away from social media. Don’t get sucked into a Twitter hole when you’re supposed to be working. Stay off Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, all of those while you’re supposed to be working. 2. Figure out when you best work. Some of us are larks and some are owls. Forcing yourself to get up an hour earlier to get things done is useless if you’re nodding off. Structure your day so the most important tasks get tackled when you’re at your peek. 3. Learn how to say no. Whether it’s an invitation, a phone call, or taking on a project when you already have too much on your plate, say no. Once you’ve finished, then you’re free to accept those things. 4. Exercise, eat and sleep properly. You’re brain and body can’t function if you’re poorly nourished, tired, and immobile. 5. Get organized. Clutter and mess are distracting. Tidy your work area. Our personal tips: 1. Drink coffee. Or your stimulant of choice. 2. Wear headphones. Especially if you work in a loud office, get some noise cancelling headphones to block out the distracting noise. Music or podcast optional. 3. Mailbox. Manage your e-mail faster and more effectively. 4. To do list. It should be short but detailed with everything you need to accomplish each task to hand. 5. Set time constraints. Set a timer and when it goes off, you’re done. The limited window will force you to get things done. 30/30 is an app designed for this. 6. Rescue Time. The Mint for your time. See how much time you’re wasting on Reddit. We’ll put a lot more ideas into the show notes for you. Even using one of our tips or tools will make your day easier. Show Notes Wise Bread: A great resource for personal finance information and frugal tips. College Info Geek: Our buddy Thomas’s guide to getting the most from your college experience.
