“Part of it simply is the tone from the top and walking the four corners. Early on there would be people who would walk up to me and say in the 10 years or 15 years, I've worked here, I've never spoken so much with the CEO”, says Todd. “I do love a good chat with folks and talk about their lives and their futures and we continue to work on that.”Todd and Susan talk through their career journeys from M&A Lawyer and Corporate Banking to joining Atlanta-based Builders Insurance Group as President & CEO and Chief of Staff respectively. They discuss the structure of the business, its growth through acquisition and how they are transforming a once siloed, fractured culture in to a strong, united place to build an insurance career. “It did need some significant cultural change very quickly. Folks needed to know they had a good safe place to be and the company was going to change fundamentally. It was a long listening tour of what matters to people.”Susan gives an insight in to three themed employee resource groups – Diversity, Equity & Belonging, Green Team and Builders Gifts Back – and their impact internally and on the wider community. One of the key impacts on the business has been a reduction in staff turnover from 20% to less than 1%. “One of the things we looked at was a global reset of titles and compensation. We worked very hard and spent a lot of time to get that right. We reset the entire company and made that statement to our people that we can't say we're a great place to work unless we live by the things that get us there.”Attracting a younger generation of talent has been another benefit of the culture reset, transforming Builders from a retirement destination company to a recognized employer of choice. Todd and Susan share their advice on retaining talent and empowering the next generation of leaders, including sponsorship of the National African American Insurance Association scholarships.“Make it part of your routine to stop and talk to someone briefly. It's truly is toned from the top. Being genuine, being humble and knowing your people is a crucial skill for any leader. That translates down to the next generation that we can foster into leaders in their own respect.”Connect with Todd Campbell and Susan Graham on LinkedIn or find out more about Builders Insurance Group The Insurance Coffee House Podcast is hosted by Nick Hoadley, CEO, Insurance Search, the Executive Search Consultancy for growing Insurance and Insurtech businesses around the globe. To discuss identifying & attracting the very best talent to your team or being a podcast guest, reach out to Nick via nick.hoadley@insurance-search.com Copyright Insurance Search 2023 – All Rights Reserved.

Synopsis As the season begins, we offer you this “Autumn Music” — a woodwind quintet by American composer Jennifer Higdon. Higdon says she wanted to write a companion piece to another famous woodwind quintet titled “Summer Music” by Samuel Barber. Higdon's “Autumn Music” was commissioned by Pi Kappa Lambda, the national music honorary society, and premiered at their 1994 national convention in Pittsburgh. “Autumn Music,” says Higdon, “is a sonic picture of the season of brilliant colors. The music of the first part represents the explosion of leaves and the crispness of the air of fall. As the music progresses, it becomes more spare and introspective, moving into a more melancholy and resigned feeling.” Jennifer Higdon was born in Brooklyn in 1962, and teaches at the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. Her chamber and orchestral pieces have been performed by ensembles coast to coast. She's also active as a performer and, as she explains, as an enthusiastic member of the audience: “I love exploring new works — my own pieces and the music of others — in a general audience setting, just to feel a communal reaction to new sounds. Music speaks to all age levels and all kinds of experiences in our lives. I think it can express anything and everything.” Music Played in Today's Program Jennifer Higdon (b. 1962): Autumn Music –Moran Woodwind Quintet (Crystal 754) On This Day Births 1875 - Lithuanian composer Mikolajus Ciurlionis, in Varena (then the Kaunas province of the Russian Empire; Julian date: Sept. 10); 1933 - Spanish composer Leonardo Balada, in Barcelona; 1961 - American composer Michael Torke, in Milwaukee, Wisc.; Deaths 1989 - American song composer Irving Berlin, age 101, in New York City; Premieres 1869 - Wagner: opera, "Das Rheingold," in Munich at the Hoftheater, Franz Wüllner conducting; The opera was performed at the Bavarian emperor Ludwig II's request, but against the composer's wishes; 1938 - Webern: String Quartet, Op. 28, at South Mountain, Pittsfield, Mass., during the Berkshire Chamber Music Festival; This work was commissioned for $750 by the American music patron, Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge; 1964 - Jerry Bock: musical "Fiddler On the Roof" opens on Broadway: It would run for 3,242 performances before closing; 1971 - Barber: "The Lovers" for solo voice and chorus (after a poem by Pablo Neruda), in Philadelphia; 1989 - Bernstein: "Arias and Barcarolles" (orchestrated version prepared by Bright Sheng), at the Tilles Center of Long Island University with the New York Chamber Symphony conducted by Gerard Schwarz and featuring vocalists Susan Graham and Kurt Ollmann; The first version of this work, for soloists and piano four-hands, premiered on May 9, 1988, at Equitable Center Auditorium in New York City; 1990 - James MacMillan: "The Beserking" (Piano Concerto), at Henry Wood Hall in Glasgow by pianist Peter Donohoue and the Royal Scottish Orchestra, Matthias Bamert conducting; 1990 - Christopher Rouse: "Jagannath" for orchestra, by the Houston Symphony Orchestra, Christoph Eschenbach conducting; 2000 - Philip Glass: “Tirol Concerto” for piano and orchestra, by Dennis Russell Davies (piano and conductor) with the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, at the 7th annual Klangspuren Festival in Schwaz, Tirol (Austria); 2000 - Zwilich: "Millennium Fantasy" for piano and orchestra, by the Cincinnati Symphony, Jesús Lopez-Cobos conducting with soloist Jeffrey Biegel; Others 1937 - During the Spanish Civil War, Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas conducts his 1935 composition “Homage to Federico Garcia Lorca” in Madrid while the city was under siege by Spanish fascist forces; The Spanish poet Lorca had been killed by the Falangists; Links and Resources On Jennifer Higdon On Barber's "Summer Music"

I programmet medverkar även Karolina Bengtssons sångpedagog, professorn och världssopranen Barbara Bonney i Salzburg, altsångerskan Anna Larsson i Stockholm, svensk-ungerska sopranen Clarry Bartha i Tyskland. Synopsis Some classical music snobs look down their nose at film scores, considering them less “serious” than “art” music written for the concert hall. Aaron Copland, for one, deplored this attitude. He admired the work of composers like Bernard Herrmann, Alex North, David Raksin, and Elmer Bernstein, whose successful Hollywood careers earned them financial rewards on the West Coast, if not the respect of the snootier East Coast music critics. Copland himself had spent some time in Hollywood, and knew what was involved in completing a film score on time AND on budget. On today’s date in 1940, at Grauman’s Chinese Theater in Hollywood, the press was invited to a special preview showing of a new film version of Thornton Wilder’s popular stage play “Our Town.” To match Thornton Wilder’s nostalgic play about American life in Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire, Copland’s score employed harmonies suggestive of old New England church hymns. For once, audiences AND the critics were impressed, and Copland quickly arranged an “Our Town” concert suite, which premiered on a CBS Radio broadcast in June of 1940, and reworked this suite for its first public performance by the Boston Pops and Leonard Bernstein in May of 1944. Dr Susan Graham is intent on tackling the biggest challenges of our day. Learn how her young team of audacious problem-solvers maintain an attitude of persistent positivity while staring down our planet's dramatic loss of biodiversity, and two billion hectares of degraded land. Dr Graham sees this mass degradation as an enormous opportunity. She is intent on solving for the mismatch of scale when it comes to rate of degradation to rate of restoration. An entrepreneur from a young age, Susan has learnt to balance urgent action with deep thinking. Studying both medicine and engineering, she says "I wanted to scale beyond my hands." Where engineering has enabled scalable impact – Dendra became not only the first company to ever plant trees with drones, but as well, to dare to undertake species level analytics of complex biodiverse ecosystems –  Australian directness means the team get to the nub of the matter really quickly. There is a compelling tenacity to Susan's confidence to ask 'What's next? How can we change carbon markets?' for example. We hope you enjoy this conversation with Dr Susan Graham, and clearly hear her call to action to know that today is our day. Now is the time. The need for each of us to play our best game is urgent.

Collaborative pianist, teacher, and vocal coach Chris Foley is the author of CollaborativePiano.com, one of the most popular classical music blogs that turns 10 years old in November, 2015. What is "collaborative piano"? Ah, great question! It happens to be the type of piano playing that both Chris and I specialize in, but I'll let Chris answer that question himself! Chris and I have known each other virtually for many years, but we've never actually spoken directly until this interview. So it's a real delight for me to introduce Chris Foley, who is an accomplished collaborative pianist based in Toronto Canada. A hallmark of Chris Foley's career in classical music has been his ingenuity, constant state of evolution and drive to pass on the rich legacy of chamber music, art song, opera and contemporary music as a dedicated teacher to new generations.  His wide-ranging career has spanned the academy, stage and even TV as pianist and singing coach on the sleeper hit on Bravo!Canada award winning reality show "Bathroom Divas".  A seeker of the cutting edge, this month Chris celebrates the 10th anniversary of his blog, The Collaborative Piano, which is one THE most popular classical music blogs out there. Happy 10th birthday, Chris! What an incredible accomplishment and amazing resource for classical music and collaborative pianists worldwide! Musical Selections: Die Schöne Müllerin, D.795 – 1. Here's The Thing with Alec Baldwin

This week Alec talks with opera singer Renée Fleming, whose singing voice has been described as "double cream." Fleming remembers her professional debut -- “I was just jelly at the end of the first rehearsal” -- and celebrates her long association with The Metropolitan Opera. Fleming talks about performing and the challenges of being heard, without amplification, over an orchestra, but also about the pleasure of being in the audience “where I have literally been sobbing at the end” of an opera. Music excerpts included in Here's the Thing's conversation with Renée Fleming (in order of appearance): “Glück, das mir verblieb (Marietta's Lied)” from Korngold's Die Tote Stadt (Live performance from the Met's 125th Anniversary Gala, March 15, 2009; Conductor: James Levine) “I'll Be Seeing You” (Renée Fleming with the Eastman Jazz Ensemble/”Arranger's Holiday” recorded Fall 1981 (archive tape courtesy Renée Fleming; special thanks to Ed Fleming) "Contessa, perdono!" from Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro, Houston Grand Opera. Conductor; Christoph Eschenbach. 1991 “Glück, das mir verblieb (Marietta's Lied)” from Korngold's Die Tote Stadt  (Live performance from the Met's 125th Anniversary Gala, March 15, 2009; Conductor: James Levine) “Dis-moi que je suis belle” from Massenet's Thaïs (Live Met performance, December 20th, 2008; Conductor: Jesús López-Cobos) “Hab' mir's gelobt” from Richard Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier (Live Met performance, January 9, 2010, with Susan Graham as Octavian and Christine Schäfer as Sophie; Conductor: Edo de Waart) “Mio caro bene” from Handel's Rodelinda (Live Met performance, January 1, 2005; Conductor: Harry Bicket) Finale from Tchaikovsky's The Queen of Spades (Live Met performance, March 26, 2011; Conductor: Andris Nelsons) Finale from Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro (Live Met performance, February 12, 1994, with Dwayne Croft (Count Almaviva), Marie McLaughlin (Susanna), James Morris (Figaro), Jane Bunnell (Cherubino), François Loup (Dr. Bartolo), Judith Christin (Marcellina), Michel Sénéchal (Don Basilio), James Courtney (Antonio), and Korliss Uecker (Barbarina); Conductor: Julius Rudel) Special thanks this week to The Metropolitan Opera and the Houston Grand Opera for providing archival musical excerpts. In particular, thanks to Peter Clark, Mary Jo Heath, Brent Ness, Sam Neuman, Elena Park, and Claire Vince. And thanks to Paul Batsel at the Office of Renée Fleming.
