What a pleasure it was to conduct this fascinating interview with a humble leader, pioneer, and USPTA Hall of Fame recipient, Dr Jack Groppel. Emma has followed Jack's career over the years, watching him present live many times and he has always openly shared his secrets to success. In this episode, Jack talks about the 3 C's (and an extra leadership quality) when it comes to being the best coach you can be. He talks about his early career from studying wildlife biology to those 17 words that one of his professors said, which ultimately changed the direction of his life. He talks about what the business world can learn from sports and how it is important to be humble in your success. Check out some of the highlights below; 1.31: Worst coaching moment: Know when to refer your client to someone else. You can everything to everyone. Sometimes you need to eat humble pie. 2.58: Best coaching moment: Working with Michael Chang - then he goes on to win the French Open three months later. Be humble and be careful what you credit for. Your players still need to execute. 6.56: Sliding Doors: From wildlife biology to having a mentor that believes in you. Dr. Charles Dillman, associate professor of kinesiology, told Jack these 17 words after only one semester that ultimately changed the trajectory of his career: ‘If you really apply yourself, you could become a pioneering leader in the science of tennis performance.' 11.35: What makes a Great Coach? (Connection, Character, and Curiosity) Connection: No one teaches us how to listen - true connection allows for this. Character: Who are you at your core? Why do you coach? Curiosity: What are you deeply curious about? 15.39: Why are more people not curious? Be careful not to get set in your ways and don't just coach the way that you were coached because it worked for you. Find solutions to problems. 17.07: Why do you do what you do? (Do not judge your answer but know your WHY) 18.19: What matters most RIGHT NOW? 20.03: Tennis saved me. 22.00: What can the Corporate world learn from tennis? Focus on the 3 pillars: Physiology - how the brain lights up when you move. (Microbursts) Psychology - What is productive behavior? Nutrition - Food is a drug - how are you eating? 23.55: Agape love - unconditional love (to love thy neighbor in the workplace) Late 80's early 90's - Purpose was important but no one was talking about it. If you were in the workplace prior to 1995 - you were non-contactable. But now we are accessible 24 hours, 7 days, 365 days a year. But my greatest memory is of Dr. Charles Dillman, associate professor of kinesiology, telling me these words after only one semester: ‘If you really apply yourself, you could become a pioneering leader in the science of tennis performance.' “That was all it took. “I went straight through my MS degree, studying and writing about tennis science, went to Florida State for my Ph.D., then got hired as the men's tennis coach at Illinois and a professor in kinesiology. There are so many ways to introduce Barbra Schulte. You could start with the incredible work she does coaching riders, helping them develop mental strategies to get the best out of themselves and their horses. Or you could talk about her many outstanding accolades in the cutting horse arena, including her induction in the National Cowgirl Hall of Fame in 2012. But what I love most about Barbra is the warmth, love and kindness she exudes and the way she's shows up in the world. Beyond everything, that is what impresses me the most. I was fortunate to meet Barbra relatively recently, at the Journey On Podcast Summit in November of 2022. Listening to her talk, and then later having conversations with her, I instantly fell in love. I was so thrilled to have her agree to come on the podcast because there were things I wanted to talk about with her that extended beyond her work, her horses and what she teaches. Coach Carla McKenzie is one of the nicest and kindest people I know in the tennis world with a passion for helping others and a gift for coaching. She is the Director of Tennis at The Shore and Country Club which has an incredible membership base of passionate tennis players and Carla has been instrumental in growing the program by 300% since her arrival. She has had wonderful mentors along her journey (whom she credits in this episode). Carla is clear on her coaching philosophy, what makes a great coach and leader, and what she looks for when recruiting tennis coaches. She is a self-confessed "educational junkie" who was recognized as the Profesional Tennis Registry (PTR) Coach Developer of the Year in 2019. She believes that a great coach is passionate, a great listener, and can adapt especially when they are under pressure. As a leader, Carla would never ask her team to do something that she is not prepared to do herself. We hope you enjoy this episode. TFFI T – Topic This is the issue. Assume positive intent and check-in first; is this a good time or block out a time to meet. What I want to talk to you about today is… F – Facts What I have observed is, the facts are… F – Feelings This is how I feel, or this made me feel upset, this made me feel really frustrated… I – Impact Here's the impact on the team, organisation, the business… When you get through the first part of TFFI, briefly pause and take a deep breath. It's not easy to have this type of conversation and this is not an opportunity for them to respond. Remember to assume positive intent, show that you care and continue to move through the entire formula before asking them for their reflections. We Can Fly WE: WANT – This is what I want, here are the options, provide some solutions, moving forwards… CAN: CONTRIBUTE – This is where I acknowledge how I have contributed to the situation, and take responsibility for my role in the issue. Note that this is how you take responsibility and acknowledge your contribution to the situation, to really open up some healthy dialogue. FLY: FORWARDS – So moving forwards, this is what I am proposing... The authors bring a fascinating combination of experiences, vast knowledge, and deep insights to this work.  Jim is a world-renowned performance psychologist, Co-Founder of the Human Performance Institute, and author of eighteen books, including The Only Way to Win. He also co-authored the national bestseller The Power of Full Engagement.  Sheila is a behavioral geneticist. She is a Senior Scientist at the Institute for Applied Research in Youth at Tufts University, a Visiting Assistant Professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Education, and an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. Early on, Jim was intoxicated with psychology, earning his master's and a doctorate in psychology and specialized in community mental health. Two years later, he was offered a job as chief psychologist and executive director of a large community mental health center system that served central and southern Colorado. Jim felt he reached the pinnacle of his career. Then, he met exercise physiologist Dr. Joe Hill, an Olympic track and field legend who urged him to launch a new area of psychology in human performance. Jim studied under the Jimmy Connors United States Tennis Center for two years and for six years, set up a research institute. Eventually, Jim and Joe established the Human Performance Institute, to apply science, and sports to the arena of human performance.  Sheila is a former professional tennis player. She earned a B.S. in Finance from the University of Colorado, Boulder, obtained a Chartered Financial Analyst designation, and held an investment career as a Portfolio Manager. She then earned a doctorate in Behavioral Genetics from the Social, Genetic, and Developmental Psychiatry Centre at King's College London. My name is Chris Michalowski. I am a USPTA Tennis Professional and Director of Tennis at the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa (click here to see) in one of the most pristine areas of Northern Michigan. Next to my faith, wife and family, tennis is a passion of mine that I hold dear to since I started playing, seriously anyway, at the age of 13. Tennis really broke me out of my shell and gave me confidence in many different areas of my life. I became a ranked junior player and was one match away from winning a state championship in high school. Three years after I started playing, I started teaching at the Midland Community Tennis Center, in Midland Michigan. It is known as one of the top clubs in the nation and recently, Midland won the “Best Tennis Town” by the United States Tennis Association. I loved to teach and wanted to learn as much as I could about the game (it helped my playing too). I knew that teaching was in my future, but my coach at the time encouraged me to stay in Architecture, my other career consideration , because of the long hours and the toll tennis takes on the body. I was accepted into the University of Cincinnati's architecture program, which was rated very high at the time, but the long hours in the studio kept me from playing and teaching. While at Cincinnati, the Ferris State University coach called and informed me that he wanted me to play on the team and take part in their new Professional Tennis Management program, the first ever, endorsed by the United States Professional Tennis Association. I was all over it. I walked through the doors and from there, never looked back. I was a member of the varsity mens team and when I wasn't hitting, I was absorbing all I could to become the best possible teaching professional that I could be. I am still that way and it drives my wife crazy sometimes. But to be honest, I feel that you can never stop learning and becoming even better at what you love to do. I have remained at the resort for 25 years as the director and was a director in the summertime (for 4 years) at one of the most prestigious country clubs in the Midwest at the time. Two jobs was a lot to handle so I decided to stay here where I feel like I was called to be. Thankfully, I stayed or I would not have met my incredible wife and parent four great kids we have been blessed with. One thing that I will always stand by, just like playing a match, is that when you are up 5-2 in the set, remember how you got there and keep doing the things that got you there in the first place. Don't change your game style at a critical time, especially when you are so close to winning the set The same goes for my outlook on teaching and my career. I still average close to 40 hours a week on the tennis court, manage a staff of 12 teaching professionals/instructors and stay active building tennis in my community with sore knees and all. I love being out there and that is what got me to where I am today, so why change things at 5-2 in the set? Do I consider myself an expert? The industry has said yes, but it is not that simple because tennis has changed over time and keeps advancing in exciting ways. I feel that it is important for teaching professionals, like myself , to stay in tune with sport science, new trends and teaching techniques, technology and new ways of teaching the game so that I can stay on top of “my game.” If I taught the same way I did 20 years ago, things would be very different for me right now and I would not have the opportunities and successes that I have been blessed with. Even as a USPTA Midwest Tester, I still learn something each time we administer the teaching exam to new tennis professionals. So what does all this mean? It means that through the use of technology and my knowledge and relationships that I developed with experts from around the world, I hope to be able to have a relationship with you and help in any way that I can to take your game to the next level. How do we handle a toxic employee? How long have we noticed their behavior and never addressed it? Is it hard for owners to let someone go that they hired and thought would be a great fit for the team? Dr. Dave Weiman, psychologist, and owner of Weiman Consulting explain the behavioral background of a toxic employee. Every business owner needs to listen to this episode! Key Talking Points Toxic employees- they know other people will pick up their slack and don't care. It is almost impossible to change toxic behavior, but you can almost always change the production level on a positive team player employee. Toxic people have excuses for their behavior Red flags during hiring- behavioral questions, not following instructions in process.  “Tell me about a recent success that you were directly involved in, what happened and why was it successful?” “Can you tell me about a recent professional disappoint and why it didn't go well?” Do they only give themselves credit for success? Do they blame others for disappointment?  You risk other employees leaving because you as an owner, are tolerating toxic behavior 20% at top of business- follow all the rules, self-motivated. 20% at the bottom- unhappy wherever they are, complain, “problem children,” 60% in middle that can be drawn up or down What are people doing outside of work? What do they value? “How do you pick the guys that go on Seal Team Six? Because they're the best of the best of the best.” Graph: On one side (y-axis) is performance. On the other side (x-axis) is trust. A high performance & low trust person is a toxic leader and a toxic team member. Coachability- take in feedback and change, are they giving excuses? Through 50 years in tennis, Kim has mentored and led athletes and coaches both on the court and in the classroom. She had on-court success as a Division I All-America player at the University of Florida, and has coached at the high school, Division I college, and Club levels. She has been a mental toughness and performance coach for 10 years, as well. Kim holds a Masters of Education in Positive Coaching and Athletic Leadership from the University of Missouri, a B.S. in Finance from Florida, and has achieved certifications from the Human Performance Institute as a Mental Toughness Specialist; from Peak Performance Sports as a Mental Game Coach and from Notre Dame University as an Executive in Leadership. The Professional Tennis Management program at UF is Kim's latest passion project. She has created an opportunity for all lovers of the game to pursue their education while learning how to create and manage a tennis program that will set them on an upward-leaning career path. Near the end of today’s episode our guest tells us that, “My Purpose is to bring hope to every employee of Johnson & Johnson.” We have no doubt at all he means it—and what makes this even more interesting is that he’s working in an $85 billion enterprise that many see as being one of he very first American brands to publicly commit to Purpose. The company is, of course, Johnson & Johnson, a brand founded in 1886 that develops medical devices, pharmaceutical, and consumer packaged goods, and the individual we’re speaking to about Purpose is its Global Head of Talent Development, Clint Kofford. Today, we’re going to delve into what Clint means by his statement—as well as how Johnson & Johnson’s Purpose statement, its famous Credo, feeds into what he and all of its other 135,000 team members do every day. As you may know the Credo, written in 1932, lays out how, among other things, it is “responsible to our employees who work with us throughout the world” and that managers must always strive to “provide an inclusive work environment where each person must be considered as an individual”—but just as importantly, “When we operate according to these principles, the stockholders should realize a fair return.” Amazing stuff for 1932; still pretty cool—which is why we knew J&J had to be a big part of Season 7, where we’re working with the smart gals at RedThread Research to understand Purpose in modern American business… and why Clint is convinced the Credo’s more than just a moral compass, but a recipe for business success. And we do, I think, but really through a great dialog with him, not from a line-by-line analysis of any Purpose statement. Bryan started his career at the University of Missouri Department of Physical Therapy in 2012. Before this, he served as a strength & conditioning coach at the University of Missouri since 2004, and before that at Arizona State University, University of Tulsa, and Missouri State University. Mann is internationally renowned for his work in autoregulation of strength training, specifically with Velocity Based Training and the Autoregulatory Progressive Resistance Exercise method (APRE). Mann splits his time between teaching, researching in sports performance enhancement, working as the Research Director for the Human Performance Institute, and working as the Director for Performance Research with the Department of Athletics.
