It's the biggest crime—and cover-up—in British history. And most people, at least until recently, haven't even heard of it. Thousands of young girls, mostly children, were systematically groomed and raped by immigrant gangs across the UK over a period of decades. Police turned the girls away. Detectives were discouraged from investigating. Politicians and prosecutors did their best to sweep it under the rug. Journalists skipped the biggest story of their lives. A culture of silence enveloped the United Kingdom. Why? Today, we talk to two women who spoke out years ago about what was happening while nearly everyone looked the other way: the British feminist and author Julie Bindel, and the author and activist Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Both took tremendous risks in highlighting the story while the legacy press largely looked away. Bindel is the author, most recently, of Feminism for Women and writes a popular Substack column. Hirsi Ali, a Free Press contributor, is the author of numerous books on radical islam, including Prey: Immigration, Islam, and the Erosion of Women's Rights, which helped bring attention to the grooming gangs scandal in 2021.  Julie and Ayaan explain today what happened, how these rapes and murders were covered up in the name of preserving “social harmony,” how it's still happening, why Elon Musk is suddenly tweeting furiously about it and how Britain's ruling class is being forced to reckon with a scandal it had, until recently, successfully ignored.  It's a story about “tolerance” run amok, and how a civilized country can convince itself to accept the most uncivilized crimes imaginable. Can Feminism and Gender Ideology Co-Exist?

Over the past year, I've spent countless hours studying the intersection of historical feminism and modern day gender ideology. I've interviewed numerous feminists, journalists, and academics who believe that the word Woman is defined by biology, not an identity… and that any change to this canonical definition is harmful to the categorization and protection of women at large. In my attempt to better understand gender ideology, I've interviewed numerous members of our trans community, as well as the many activists and liberal progressives who believe in the immutable and unbendable mantra that Trans Women are Women. And therein lies the rub. Today, I moderate our first T30 debate with two former guests, Julie Bindel and Brit Abney. During our time together, we attempt to answer the question, Can Feminism and Gender Ideology Co-exist? As you will soon hear, Bindel and Abney debate what it means to be a woman, a feminist, and a TERF. Bindel is a storied journalist and feminist who co-founded the law reform group, Justice for Women, and once served as the assistant director of the Research Centre for Violence, Abuse, and Gender Relations at Leeds Metropolitan University. She is also the author of Feminism for Women, The Real Route to Liberation, a book published in 2021 to much international fanfare. Abney is an academic, activist, and progressive intellectual who passionately lobbies on behalf of our trans community here in America. My hope with bringing Julie and Brit back on the show was to prove that polite conversation is not only possible today…it's preferable… if our collective goal is to find compromise on the topics that divide us the most. I hope you learned as much as I did today. Thanks for listening!Watch Episode:True Thirty is a reader-supported publication. What is a feminist? Journalist, author, and English badass Julie Bindel has opinions, informed by decades of work in the Women's Liberation movement. We discuss women who aren't feminists being mistaken for feminists, women denouncing feminism, far-right incursions into feminism, male protectionism, Political Lesbianism, kicking men in the nuts, separatism, homosexuality, butch-femme nonsense, bodyguards, Patriarchy, incels, and fake leftist men. Bindel passionately, intelligently, and articulately voices a Feminist position that will satisfy supporters, while supplying substance and heft for detractors to push against. If you've just heard of the word “TERF” (it stands for Trans Exclusionary Radical Feminist) it was probably because of Dave Chapelle's new Netflix special, “The Closer.” The comedian declared himself “Team TERF.” But what does that really mean?  Julie Bindel would know. She has been physically attacked; her work has been banned; and she's been disinvited from lectures all because of the accusation that she is a TERF. Bindel isn't new to the culture wars. The self-proclaimed radical feminist has been active in the movement since 1979. Today she breaks down the battle raging inside the feminist movement and makes me wonder: am I a feminist? After two years, Thistle Pettersen went back into the studios of WORT 89.9 FM, the community radio station in Madison, to interview Meghan Murphy LIVE on the Access Hour and to play a pre-recorded interview she did with Julie Bindel. Thanks to WORT's Access Hour for allowing these interviews to be broadcast from the station. Ms. Pettersen was banned from the station's premises in January 2016 due to transactivist complaints about her previous LIVE interview with Sheila Jeffreys in 2014 and the broadcasting of Ms. Pettersen's radio documentary of the Last Michigan Womyn's Music Festival in 2015. The ban was lifted in February 2016, but she did not feel comfortable going back to the station until 2018. Even now, there are staff and volunteers at the station who believe that what you will hear in this program, and in any of the programs that Ms. Pettersen produces is "hate speech." Thankfully, the mission of the Access Hour slot in particular, allows for differing points of view on women's liberation politics to be aired on Madison's community radio station, WORT 89.9 FM In these two interviews with Murphy & Bindel, learn more about Ms. Bindel's book, the Pimping of Prostitution and why taking a stand for abolishing prostitution and sex trafficking is the most feminist stance one can take. In addition, hear what Meghan Murphy of Feminist Current has to say about current gender identity legislation and why she testified before the Canadian Senate against it. 2017 Rothko Chapel Óscar Romero Award Pre-Program Double Jeopardy: Women and the Criminal Justice System Conversation with Julie Bindel and Dr. Andrea Link, moderated by Lise Olsen Women of sex trafficking face the dual realities of being victims while also being prosecuted as offenders. Julie Bindel was joined in conversation with Houston advocate Dr. Andrea Link and Lise Olsen, investigative reporter with the Houston Chronicle as they explored this topic from both local and global perspectives. The local awardee for the 2017 ORA, Kathryn Griffin Griñán, provides direct service and counseling to victims of sex trafficking in Houston. In her most recent book “The Pimping of Prostitution,” Bindel takes the debate on prostitution legislation head-on, exposing the lived realities of women in contrast with the dominant discourse in current academic and liberal feminist debates. Based on more than 250 interviews with people involved in and affected by prostitution around the world, Bindel exposes the harms of the global sex trade and documents the emergence of the exciting and vibrant survivor abolitionist movement – leading us to question when the policy makers, politicians and international human rights organizations will start to reject the mythology around prostitution, hold sex buyers accountable for the damage that they do, and truly begin to fight for the human rights of women around the world. This program was followed by a public reception and book signing with Julie Bindel on the plaza. About the program participants: A renowned investigative journalist, Julie Bindel has written extensively on a range of topics including violence against women, the international surrogacy trade, mail order brides, trafficking, and unsolved murders. She writes regularly for The Guardian, New Statesman, The International Business Times, and The Spectator, and frequently appears on the BBC and Sky News. She was Visiting Journalist at Brunel University, UK (2013 - 2014) and is now on the Advisory Board of Byline.com. Dr. Andrea Link is a physician who did her medical training and residency at Stanford University School of Medicine. She developed and implemented Healthcare for the Homeless Houston’s award-winning Healthy and Whole program at Angela House, which provides women exiting prostitution and incarceration with comprehensive trauma-informed health and wellness programming. Dr. Link also researches the psychosocial and medical issues involved in street-level prostitution and lectures on the subject at both the local and national level. She is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Family and Community Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine and is the Program Manager for Healthy and Whole. Lise Olsen is deputy investigations editor and senior investigative reporter at the Houston Chronicle. Olsen has more than 20 years' experience specializing primarily in crime, corruption, worker safety and human rights. Her work also has appeared in documentaries “The Eleven” (A & E -2017); “Ruben Cantu: The Wrong Man?”(CNN-2015) and in Texas Monthly. Her series on a Houston-based human trafficking ring that for years kept importing girls from Mexico and selling them in local cantinas was published in the Chronicle and in Borderline Slavery: Mexico, United States and the Human Trade.
