Meghan Murphy is a freelance writer and journalist, and is the founder and editor of Feminist Current. It's a $97 billion global industry that has made its way into mobile phones, video games and laptops. Never before has porn been more accessible, and offered more variety, than the present day. And yet, some feminists want to revisit the question of whether it should exist at all. They say pornography exploits young women and creates unrealistic expectations in the bedroom. So many of society's worst problems – from pedophilia, to sexual assault, to gender inequality – are amplified by porn use. And with the advent of the internet and video streaming, children are able to access hardcore porn with few guardrails, leading to a generation of young men who are getting their sex education from unrealistic and exploitative sexual relationships portrayed onscreen. On the other side of the debate are those who see value in porn: research shows that men who watch porn value female pleasure more, couples who watch porn together have better sexual relationships, and LGBT folk report a greater sense of community acceptance. Porn, its defenders argue, is being used as a distraction when many of the problems related to the industry are already systemic in our everyday lives. And finally, attempting to ban porn would only drive it underground and increase the risk of exploitation. In their view, it's time to put the decades long debate over porn to bed, once and for all. How does life transform after questioning everything you thought you knew about the world? As we grow into adulthood and consider the axioms we live by, we are sometimes left to adjust to a world we see radically differently than before, and must find new ways of being. After almost a year of organizing, Jaclynn Joseph and Neo Yao have founded Taiwan's first gender critical, female-centric organization — Taiwan Women's Association (TWA/Chinese 臺灣女性協會) — which has been officially recognized by the government. Originally from Hawai'i and now based in Taiwan, Jaclynn Joseph is a university lecturer, Ph.D. candidate in the field of feminist philosophy, and the Taiwan country representative of the feminist organization Women's Declaration International (WDI). A guest writer for Feminist Current, she was the first to shed light on the infiltration of gender identity ideology in Taiwan through her articles. Neo Yao was born and raised in Taipei, Taiwan. He has been a human rights and LGB activist for more than fifteen years, and a women's rights activist for more than six years. He began focusing on Women's sex-based rights in the past several years, and along with Jaclynn, formed the Taiwan Women's Association in late 2022 as a founding member, where he currently serves as an executive council member. Some founding members of TWA, including Jaclynn, also work with an organization called No Self-ID Taiwan (NSIDT). NSIDT is the only website in Taiwan dedicated to pushing back against gender ideology and tracking changes in related legislation. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/womens-voices/message

Today I have the pleasure of having freelance writer and journalist, Meghan Murphy on the show. Meghan has a master's degree in the department of Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies at Simon Fraser University, and has been writing about feminism since 2010. Known for going against the grain, she was the first to publish a critique of Slutwalk, back in 2011, and was one of the only popular feminist bloggers to publicly articulate both a radical feminist and socialist position against the sex industry. Meghan's critiques of third wave feminism, burlesque, self-objectification in selfies, gender identity politics, and choice feminism have brought both acclaim and attacks, but most of all recognition as a writer who isn't afraid to say something different, despite what progressive and mainstream media deem to be the party line. Meghan has spoken around the world about the issue of gender identity legislation and women's rights, including at the Canadian Senate and Scottish Parliament. Meghan was also featured in our documentary film Trans mission: What's the Rush to Reassign Gender. Most recently, Meghan is the is the founder and editor of Feminist Current, Canada's leading feminist website where you can find a unique perspective on gender, women's rights and many other issues that are often underrepresented or misrepresented by mainstream, progressive, and feminist media sources. She is licensed and certified to practice in her state of residence and provides clinical services to a diverse population in an outpatient setting. She experienced gender dysphoria and identified as transgender while in college, and identified as a trans man, watching several of her friends undergo radical mastectomies and hormone therapies. Intensive talk therapy led to recovery from gender dysphoria and acquisition of coping skills that were more supportive than a binder and less harmful than surgery. Now she is exposing the predatory, profit-driven harms of modern gender medicine.
Jeanne Sarson & co-author Linda MacDonald are feminists who have written, Women Unsilenced: Our Refusal to Let Torturer-Traffickers Win!" Have any of you good women and men ever known misogynists to be happy when good women refuse to shut up? So, this is more reason to invite you to travel with Linda and I and all the women who successfully and proudly journeyed with us throughout the pages of our book. I write about our book because it's very much a part of who I came to be, how my life journey unknowingly prepared me to be able to tackle Unsilencing the Truth about the violent lives of Girls & Women while exposing the MO of those who thought they could forever manipulate society – they didn't know that I learned at age three how to understand the manipulation tactics of a violent father. So, this is my story. Linda MacDonald, I have been fighting patriarchy since before I was born. My father kicked my mother down a flight of stairs when she was pregnant with me. I survived! My youngest memory is of me at age two knowing my father hurting my mother and I the night before was wrong. This little girl awareness set me on a path of fighting violence against women and girls for my whole life. I will be speaking out till my last breath! Today I stand with Jeanne Sarson as we expose the grave form of violence and human rights violation of non-State torture (NST) – the torture and trafficking of women and children by the everyday perpetrator. Jeanne and I have learned much about the MO of these so far mostly invisible torturer-traffickers. If you are curious at all join Jeanne and I as we share what we have learned and the solutions, we suggest. You can read more about our work in our first book, Women Unsilenced Our Refusal to Let Torturer-Traffickers Win. Listen in, be that Fly on the Wall…

Last week, Elon Musk offered to buy Twitter for over 41 billion dollars. This came on the heels of his purchase last month of nearly ten percent of the company. This activity has invited speculation that the platform might shift away from what some users see as infamous censoriousness and into more free speech direction. That's why Meghan invited Meghan Murphy onto the podcast. In 2018, Murphy, an independent journalist and blogger, was permanently banned from Twitter for, as she sees it, a few banal tweets about who counts as a woman, a man or anything else. She was never told what exactly was wrong with her tweets and she lost her appeals to be reinstated on the platform. In this conversation, Murphy talks about rebuilding her professional platform after losing access to most of her audience and why Twitter is especially crucial for independent creators. The two Meghans also talk about whether it's easier for them to speak up about controversial subjects because they don't have spouses or kids who might face repercussions. Guest Bio: Meghan Murphy is a Canadian writer, the founder and editor of Feminist Current, and the host of the Feminist Current podcast. She was permanently banned from Twitter in 2018 for questioning gender identity ideology and for referring to a male as "he." She hosts The Same Drugs podcast on YouTube and Anchor.fm. Follow her work on Substack: https://meghanmurphy.substack.com/ and Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/meghanemilymurphy. She is currently based in Mexico.
Meghan Murphy, journalist, and founder of Feminist Current, a feminist web site and podcast, sits down with Bridget to discuss the real world consequences of speaking out about gender identity, ideology & legislation, specifically as they pertain to women's rights, and the loss of safe spaces for women in our society. Meghan talks about being deplatformed, receiving death threats, not being published, losing friends, and ultimately moving to Mexico from Canada as a result of her public stance on this issue. They cover why gender roles and stereotypes do matter, taking feminism for granted, defending women's basic sex-based rights and protections, how women are being silenced and shunned for speaking up and men are being lauded and building audiences discussing the same topic, and how many feminists have been tricked into believing "women" is a dirty word.

Then the motivation and process of creating the website, Gender Dissent, the women who are part of the team, the types of articles we post. We post two types -- investigative journalism, and items that show Canadians resisting the imposition of gender ideology. Finally, how we are being received. Meghan Murphy is a freelance writer and journalist, as well as the of founder Feminist Current and host of The Same Drugs podcast. Meghan was thrust in to the spotlight after getting kicked off Twitter in 2018 for using male pronouns to describe a man. Her work addresses a wide range of topics including free speech, pop culture, politics, and various underrepresented issues. In this episode Meghan and I get into the obstacles of not fitting in to the confines of the modern feminist collective and ‘wave feminism,' taking up the task of combating insular conversations, and weighing the financial and social risks of speaking out. We also discuss some of the factors putting mainstream feminism in a tough spot as well as accepting some hard truths about men consuming women as an industry. My guest on the show this week is the proprietor of the Feminist Current website and the Same Drugs video podcast, Meghan Murphy. Meghan is well known as a feminist who comes from the left. However, with her evolution over recent years, she has come to realize that as some of her stances change, it's better to avoid political labels altogether. While some of her principles remain unchanged, many of her "labels" have been tarnished by others. As you know, some of my labels have been tarnished over the years as well, so I really relate to Meghan on this. We discuss feminism, prostitution, COVID, the patriarchy, Meghan's relocation to Mexico from Canada, and much more. This was a really enjoyable conversation for me, and I think you'll enjoy it too. On this bonus episode, not only do I have a great guest in Megan Murphy, but I have a co-host in Bobby Pearson! Meghan Murphy is back on the show to discuss how elements of the left will not stand for her pure version of being a feminist. Meghan is very well known in the feminist movement, having started Feminist Current in 2012, Canada's leading feminist website. She now speaks to large crowds and is often protested by people within the trans community who try to shout her down for standing her ground and speaking up for women and free speech. Over the last several years, transgender activism has made sweeping gains. Proponents of this ideology have succeeded in positioning "gender identity" as the social justice issue of our day. But are the claims made by these activists actually true? What does it mean to say that people can be "born in the wrong body"? Does the concept of “gender identity” break down stereotypes about the nature of men and women, or does it reinforce them? And what about the rights of women and girls? On February 1, 2020, the US-based organization Women's Liberation Front hosted a panel event called “The New Misogyny.” Three women's rights campaigners, Meghan Murphy, Saba Malik, and Kara Dansky, presented a critical analysis of gender identity and made arguments for sex-based women's rights. The event took place at the Seattle Public Library in downtown Seattle, Washington, despite protesters inside and outside the building. This is the talk given by Meghan Murphy, a Canadian journalist and founder of Canada's leading feminist website, Feminist Current.

After two years, Thistle Pettersen went back into the studios of WORT 89.9 FM, the community radio station in Madison, to interview Meghan Murphy LIVE on the Access Hour and to play a pre-recorded interview she did with Julie Bindel. Thanks to WORT's Access Hour for allowing these interviews to be broadcast from the station. Ms. Pettersen was banned from the station's premises in January 2016 due to transactivist complaints about her previous LIVE interview with Sheila Jeffreys in 2014 and the broadcasting of Ms. Pettersen's radio documentary of the Last Michigan Womyn's Music Festival in 2015. The ban was lifted in February 2016, but she did not feel comfortable going back to the station until 2018. Even now, there are staff and volunteers at the station who believe that what you will hear in this program, and in any of the programs that Ms. Pettersen produces is "hate speech." Thankfully, the mission of the Access Hour slot in particular, allows for differing points of view on women's liberation politics to be aired on Madison's community radio station, WORT 89.9 FM In these two interviews with Murphy & Bindel, learn more about Ms. Bindel's book, the Pimping of Prostitution and why taking a stand for abolishing prostitution and sex trafficking is the most feminist stance one can take. In addition, hear what Meghan Murphy of Feminist Current has to say about current gender identity legislation and why she testified before the Canadian Senate against it. Here is Madeline Schwartz in conversation with Feminist Current host Meghan Murphy. Human trafficking is recognized as a modern day version of slavery. It has a tremendous impact on the poor. But human trafficking affects all of us, not just the people directly involved. Ali Abunimah is a journalist and the founder of the electronic intifada. That's an independent online news publication and educational resource focusing on Palestine, its people, politics, culture and its place in the world. In the days after the recent ceasefire in Gaza, he joined rabble.ca's Redeye podcast to share his viewpoint on the conflict and the ceasefire. Host Mordecai Briemberg began by asking him about why he thought Israel attacked. An international boycott of businesses profiting from illegal Israeli settlements is needed. Dr. Richard Falk made that assertion in a report to the United Nations this October. His recommendation for a boycott led Canada, the United States, and Israel to call for his resignation. Dr. Falk is a professor emeritus of International Law at Princeton. He is also the special rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian Territories for the UN. And Dr. Falk has not resigned. rabble.ca's Redeye podcast has been covering the conflict in Gaza over the last month, and they invited him to join them on their podcast. Here he is, explaining why he made the call for a boycott. You've had a few weeks to recover from the U. S. presidential election coverage. It's safe now to pull your fingers out of your ears as the 24-hour-a-day horse-race coverage is thankfully over. Now is the time for a little more reasoned coverage. Kevin MacKay is a professor of social sciences at Mohawk College, and executive director of the Skydragon Co-operative is a non-profit worker-coop dedicated to the goals of progressive social and environmental change. Here he is, speaking with Riaz Sayani-Mulji from rabble.ca's Progressive Voices Podcast about the difference between the parties. Rape jokes, creepshots, and a slut memes about 12 year olds. They're all there on Facebook. Talk about Facebook privacy concerns abounds in the media. But there's not much in the news how the site deals with misogyny. Soraya Chemaly writes for Alternet, Fem 2.0, The Feminist Wire, and the Huffington Post, which is where she took on Facebook's failure to shut down misogynist posts and pages. Here she is on rabble.ca's Feminist Current podcast, after host Meghan Murphy asked about when she first noticed Facebook's misogyny problem. It comes up in many conversations about feminism. This comment: “I'm not a feminist, I'm a humanist.” But what if a person could be a feminist AND a humanist? It's a radical thought. Dr. Sikivu Hutchinson is one person who believes that it is both possible, and necessary. She calls it radical humanism. Hutchison is the founder of the Black Skeptics Los Angeles and a senior fellow with the Institute for Humanist Studies. The F Word collective invited Dr. Hutchinson onto their podcast to talk about faith, feminism and radical humanism. When rabble radio produced our 100th episode, we thought it would be a good idea to check in with a centenarian. Anne McPhee was 100 at that time, and she graciously agreed to talk with me about her life and the changes a century had brought to Nova Scotia. Anne McPhee died this month. She was 103. McPhee was well-known in Nova Scotia. She had a head for business and for years she ran a clothing store in Mulgrave. Here she is, talking about changes to the business and life in the Maritimes.
