Mark Joshua Epstein is a gifted storyteller and artist. If you want a great evening, hang out with Mark and talk about what you are working on and be prepared to laugh and think differently about what you have created. Born in Rockville, Maryland, Mark spent his early school years at a conservative Jewish Day School and his summers at a progressive camp learning about Third Wave Feminism. This duality in his formative years hints at his later exploration for a new and alternative space in his work. Something that pushes back and asks why it must be one way or another, both or neither. He achieves this by stacking fiberglass shapes to create new forms that function as a shaped canvas but also protrude slightly to make you question if it is also a sculpture. What is the line? Is there a line and if so, should it be there?   This questioning also arises in the pattern that is applied to the work. Some of the pattern points to op-art while other areas remind us of the hand and tools making the piece. In Nothing Matters When We’re Dancing, Ink splotches are dripped onto the surface and encapsulated by a line forming a circle. This pattern radiates out and brings to mind cells in the body.  His knack for storytelling comes through in his titles such as Small Talk at the Salad Bar. These titles add another level to his work. The seemingly abstract pieces begin to shift just enough for us to see a figure, or what could be a stand in at least, challenging us to wonder, does the piece have to be either or?   Mark Joshua Epstein is an artist, educator and curator. He received an MFA from the Slade School of Fine Arts, University College London, and a BFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. One painting’s title, Finding refuge in inefficiency (2021), nods to the pleasures found in the laborious and time-consuming nature of pattern-making exemplified in these recent works. And, as with earlier paintings, these works continue to challenge a viewer’s sense of taste and orientation.   Recent photographs, stemming from an interest in index and documentation, further emphasize my painting process. The images reproduce hand-made cut-outs, created from scraps of paper, which I often use to generate repetitive patterns within my paintings. Dr Manijeh Daneshpour is a   systemwide director and professor of marriage and family therapy in the department of couple and family therapy at Alliant International University in Irvine, California and a licensed marriage and family therapist with over 22 years of academic, research, and clinical experience. She is from Iran and identifies herself as a third wave feminist. KATHLEEN HANNA is a bad ass. As one of the very first women in the punk scene, Hanna led the way and inspired musicians, from Carrie Brownstein to Kurt Cobain. Proudly a feminist, Hanna quickly won a loyal fan base starting when she was the lead singer of Bikini Kill. Smart, fun, and a formidable presence, Hanna has reinvented herself through out her career and currently performs with The Julie Ruin. Hanna is the subject of the documentary The Punk Singer, which is currently out in theaters. I hope that every school ensures kids watch the documentary Punk Singer as it reveals how the Riot Grrrl Movement greatly influenced Third Wave Feminism and for the first time in history (pun intended) gave a voice to the legal, psychological and social ramifications of sexual violence and sexual harassment. Special Guest: Rebecca Walker is the author of the original Third Wave primer To Be Real: Telling the Truth and Changing the Face of Feminism; the bestselling post-civil rights memoir Black, White, and Jewish: Autobiography of a Shifting Self, winner of the Alex Award from the American Library Association; and What Makes a Man: 22 Writers Imagine The Future. Rebecca's memoir, Baby Love: Choosing Motherhood After a Lifetime of Ambivalence was published in March 2007 to acclaim in the New York Times, People Magazine, the Washington Post, Babble, and on the KTLA Morning Show, NPR, and many more. Her latest collection, One Big Happy Family, explores the explosion of non-traditional family configurations in the US, and includes perspectives on polyamory, transracial adoption, househusbandry, and single motherhood. Rebecca may be best known for her role as the original leader and founder of Third Wave Feminism, the movement, and the co-founder of the Third Wave Foundation, a non-profit that works through grant-making, leadership development, and philanthropic advocacy to support young women ages 15 to 30 working towards gender, racial, economic, and social justice. Rebecca is the daughter of Pulitzer-prize winning novelist Alice Walker and esteemed civil rights attorney Mel Leventhal.
