The arts have that capacity to be powerful broadcasters, conveyors of messages, invitations to celebration, reflection, storytelling, narrative building and so on. There's a vital role here for the arts. But like the rest of society, frankly, whether it's the banking system or government we're simply not doing it well enough that we could say we're satisfied with how much is happening and everything's going to be okay. It's not. If we just stopped now, chaos and worse are due. It's not to say that we can hold up the arts and say, if only you were doing your job, everything would be fine. No, we all have, no matter what sector, so much to do.This is my second conscient conversation with social innovator and former CEO of McConnell Foundation, Stephen Huddart. The first took place on June 17, 2021 in Montréal, episode 58, and this second took place on September 24th, 2024 in Victoria BC. I've condensed all of this rich conversation down to my new format of 15 minutes – not an easy edit - so what you'll hear highlights from our exchange about the vital role of art, social innovation, relations with indigenous peoples, the panarchy cycle, Stephen's leadership role with the Victoria Forum (co-hosted with members of the Canadian Senate) and more.Action pointsNurture the capacity of art to be powerful broadcasters, conveyors of messages, invitations to celebration, reflection, storytelling, narrative building, etc.Increase the vitality and role of art at the local level to contribute to a more dynamic civic cultureCreate more configurations to present, invite, engage, dialogue, contemplate, discuss the artsSee, hear and deeply hear others perspectives.Nurture the power of art to serve as a catalyst for inspiration and communityShow notes generated by Whisper Transcribe AIStory PreviewWhat if art holds the key to unlocking our collective future? Highly processed vegetable oils, derived from seeds and beans, have become a dominant part of modern diets despite significant health concerns. Historical biases in nutrition science, influenced by the vegetable oil industry, have promoted these oils despite evidence from controlled studies showing negative health outcomes. These oils are unstable, prone to oxidation, and can create toxic byproducts, particularly when exposed to heat, contributing to inflammation and chronic diseases. Although they can lower LDL cholesterol, studies have shown that this reduction does not necessarily improve heart health and may increase risks for other conditions like cancer. In contrast, traditional fats like extra virgin olive oil and omega-3-rich foods offer more stability and health benefits, emphasizing the need for a balanced, minimally processed approach to dietary fats. In this episode, I talk with Nina Teicholz and Max Lugavere to explore the health impacts of different types of fats and oils, debunking misconceptions around cooking with extra virgin olive oil and emphasizing the dangers of industrial vegetable oils. In less than two months on the job for Noah Shack, the interim CEO of the Centre for Israel and Jewish Affairs (CIJA) has had to speak out after someone shot at a Jewish girls' school in Toronto; decry a repeated arson attack on a Montreal-area synagogue; and oversee the response in Winnipeg after five swastikas were spray-painted on a community centre in a Jewish area during the final days of Hanukkah. But none of those moments marked his true national introduction, which came on Jan. 27, when he delivered a televised speech from Ottawa's Holocaust monument as part of the official ceremony to mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. Shack—who spent nearly 15 years working for CIJA in Ottawa and Toronto—has now risen to become the organization's public face, following the exit of Shimon Koffler Fogel, who managed Jewish government relations in the capital for approximately 40 years. Insiders have told The CJN that CIJA's board wanted a change of leadership ahead of an expected change in government in the coming federal election. Shack is also clear that CIJA is eager to combat anti-Israel policies, such as federal funding for the UN-backed Palestinian relief agency UNRWA—but insists CIJA isn't hitching its wagons to the Conservative party. On today's episode of The CJN Daily, Shack sits down with host Ellin Bessner to explain why he took the job, why he's calling for unity among Canada's Jewish organizations, and why he hopes Jews soon won't need to think about fleeing Canada for their own safety. In 2018, the Tommy Douglas Institute at George Brown College in Toronto welcomed then Senator and former head of the Truth and Reconciliation of Canada, the Honourable Murray Sinclair as its keynote speaker. Through his poignant address about the impacts of Canada's colonial history and the residential school system on the lives of Indigenous Peoples and the meaning of reconciliation, we experienced first-hand the brilliance, integrity, kindness and humour of this truly remarkable individual. The Honourable Murray Sinclair passed away on the morning of November 4, 2024. In his memory, we bring you his 2018 keynote address on Community, Education, Change: Indigenous Ways of Knowing. Reflecting on reconciliation, Sinclair said: “Reconciliation is a process which is building. It's not a spectator sport. It involves everybody. And everybody is implicated in it .. No neutrality exists here. .. And understanding it is part of the educational process. And understanding the implications it has for you is part of the challenge that we also need to face. And all of that has to do with knowledge. All of that has to do with dialogue as well, and developing consensus and agreement about where we're going to go as a country… We have to talk about what kind of relationship we're going to have going forward. . And that means we have to think differently. We have to think better. ” rabble had previously shared this keynote address here. Welcome to HashTag Trending, the weekend edition. I'm your host Jim Love. I can understand if many of you get frustrated about politics. What we see for the most part is a lot of BS. Ask a politician a simple question and you'll get a lot of non-answers, talking points ways that their political opponents have it wrong. Yes, that's true even in Canadian politics. So what do we do? We can get involved and try to change the process. I've certainly done that. I've worked for every political party at one point. I've worked for the NDP - Neil Young - not the musician and Bob Rae, I've worked to support the Liberals under Stephane Dion, one of the most incredible people I've ever met, I've been a riding president of a Progressive Conservative riding which led me to meet and grown to like Joe Clarke for the authentic person he is. I know what you are thinking. What's wrong with this guy? Can't he take a side? And the clear answer is no. I can't take sides. There is only side - and that's what's best for Canadians. So I've never been a believer in party labels. I wanted to work with authentic people who wanted to make Canada a better nation and make a future for our children. And the need was never greater. Canada is in crisis. Our productivity numbers are plummeting. Regardless of what you get fed from government sources, we are not a leader in AI, or in digital government. But equally, the stuff that the opposition parties are feeding you - that's nonsense as well. The reality is if you strip away the party lines, if you talk to the smartest people in Ottawa, you'd know the truth. We are in crisis. Our future standard of living is in real jeopardy. And yet, we are an incredibly resilient people, we have so much going for us, that if we could get it together we could fulfil that quote of Wilfred Laurier - the 21st Century belongs to Canada. But what do we do? Fortunately, we have a structure in our Government where parties don't really have to matter. It's called the Senate. For my American listeners, you have a Senate as well - it's called the body of “sober second thought.” The difference in Canada - our senators are actually sober. I say that in jest, but in our Senate, and I'm not taking political sides, but credit where credit is due, our Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, said he would no longer make political appointments to the Canadian Senate. He would appoint knowledgeable people and challenge them to “challenge the government's thinking.” In other words, he would try to make the Senate truly a “body of sober second thought.” A place where non-partisan citizens would join with only the best interests of the country at heart. A place where people who weren't politicians could offer their experience and expertise to the governance of our nation. There's nobody you will meet that embodies this more than my guest, Colin Deacon. Senator Deacon is a serial entrepreneur and someone who knows technology and knows how to build businesses that export to the world in a digital economy. And we're lucky to have him - both in the senate and for this interview. I met Senator Deacon at the Digital Governance Council, another group of non-partisan, business and government leaders who also have one objective - to help Canada become a leader in the digital economy. I was totally impressed by him and asked if he's sit for an interview with us. I hope you'll be as inspired by it as I was.

When a lot of us think about psychedelics, we think about magic mushrooms - and hallucinatory drug trips. But the concept of psychedelics as a tool in therapy is making its way into the mainstream. Online stores have popped up selling psilocybin capsules promising to boost focus. And on a more official front, the Canadian Senate recently recommended fast-tracking research into how psychedelics can help veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). But research also suggests psychedelics - including psilocybin ("magic mushrooms") and MDMA - can help heal racial trauma. In today's episode, Vinita speaks to clinical psychologist and University of Ottawa psychology professor Monnica Williams, about how psychedelic-assisted therapy can help with those dealing with this type of trauma, which usually encompasses ongoing experiences of what Williams calls "insults to your person." But it doesn't end there: With racial trauma, Williams says, therapists are also looking at events beyond an individual's lifetime such as "historical trauma, that may have happened decades or even centuries ago, that is still associated with the person's cultural group." And while psychedelics show incredible promise in treating this type of trauma, many challenges remain. Part of it has to do with legalization and the lack of clinical trials. Another part has to do with the terrible track record institutions have when it comes to communities of colour and drugs. There is a long and ugly history of using Black and racialized bodies without consent for medical experimentation, including drug testing. And we can't ignore the racial roots of the war on drugs and the devastating impact it had - and continues to have - on Black and racialized communities. Williams tackles these hurdles in her work. And in this episode, she shares her thoughts about how we can open up the healing properties of psychedelics to racialized people in need in a way that works with them, rather than against them.

When it came time to choose the first woman to sit in the Canadian Senate, Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King chose a relatively unknown woman named Cairine Wilson. I was very pleased to have the opportunity to speak with Senator Leo Housakos. Leo was appointed to the Canadian Senate by Prime Minister Stephen Harper, in 2008.Leo is Chair of the Standing Senate Committee on Transport and Communications, which is overseeing Bill C-11, a very controversial act that will grant the federal government overreaching power and control over the online content that Canadians consume. We talk in great detail about the concerns of Bill C-11, and the impacts it would have on Canadians, as well as the following other topics:- The reasons why C-11 is flawed and dangerous for all Canadians- Dangers of censoring voices with C-11- Why government leaders are purposely creating more division between Canadians- The $54 million ArriveCan disaster, and wasted spending in government- Why it's time for new leadership in CanadaFollow Senator Leo Housakos on Twitter: https://twitter.com/SenatorHousakos
With rain now coming to B.C., what are some of the things to keep in mind as we try to prepare for possible flooding? The Canadian Senate says B.C. is in need of a flood management plan. Today I have the pleasure of having freelance writer and journalist, Meghan Murphy on the show. Meghan has a master's degree in the department of Gender, Sexuality, and Women's Studies at Simon Fraser University, and has been writing about feminism since 2010. Known for going against the grain, she was the first to publish a critique of Slutwalk, back in 2011, and was one of the only popular feminist bloggers to publicly articulate both a radical feminist and socialist position against the sex industry. Meghan's critiques of third wave feminism, burlesque, self-objectification in selfies, gender identity politics, and choice feminism have brought both acclaim and attacks, but most of all recognition as a writer who isn't afraid to say something different, despite what progressive and mainstream media deem to be the party line. Meghan has spoken around the world about the issue of gender identity legislation and women's rights, including at the Canadian Senate and Scottish Parliament. Meghan was also featured in our documentary film Trans mission: What's the Rush to Reassign Gender. Most recently, Meghan is the is the founder and editor of Feminist Current, Canada's leading feminist website where you can find a unique perspective on gender, women's rights and many other issues that are often underrepresented or misrepresented by mainstream, progressive, and feminist media sources. Currently, Meghan is working on a book project of her own, which takes a critical look at third wave feminism. Khaled Barakat is a Palestinian-Canadian activist and writer, currently based in Vancouver, who was recently subjected to a media and political campaign aimed at silencing him and those fighting for Palestinian rights in Canada. Attempts to criminalize Barakat originated in an article published in the right-wing newspaper The National Post, and quickly became subject of debate in the Canadian Senate, with a conservative senator going so far as to asking the government to expel Barakat, a Canadian citizen, from the country. The campaign against Khaled Barakat is one of many smear campaigns being launched against pro-Palestinian voices, a phenomenon that seems to be increasing nowadays. Security in Context is a podcast project from the research network of the same name, aimed at promoting new thinking on security from a global perspective. The Security in Context podcast features discussions about key questions on peace and conflict, the political economy of security and insecurity, militarism, and geopolitics particularly as they intersect with the processes of climate change, population movement, and the reorganization of global powers. In order to delve into these topics, we interview writers, researchers, activists and professionals from inside and outside the Security in Context network. Our ultimate goal is to provide a critical representation of security related issues, paying special attention to the Global South, often misrepresented in mainstream media coverage.
