As a model, a writer, and a broadcaster, Munroe Bergdorf has already achieved so much! But it's herwork as an activist that she feels most passionately about. As a black trans woman, Munroe says her greatest achievement is continuing to live a happy life as her authentic self, and in the process, she's proving to others that they can too.Munroe speaks about the impact that Section 28 had on her as young person, what and who has made her the activist she is today, and why she feels compelled to leave behind a better world than the one she inherited. Tom and Munroe also talk openly about their experiences growing up queer, and the moments they realised there was true happiness waiting for them on the other side of the shame being projected onto them. This is a powerful and poignant chat, but it's also a very positive one! Munroe is ever hopeful, and more committed than ever to making real change for all trans people. She also speaks about getting her fun back, and why now feels like the right time for her book Transitional: In One Way or Another, We All Transition to be out in the world.Below are some links to charities, events and people which Munroe mentioned in this podcast:MermaidsGood Law ProjectLondon Trans+ PrideUK Black PrideChase Strangio on InstagramLady Phyll on Instagram Hosted on Acast. TW: rape, racism and transphobiaI have admired this woman from afar for many years and was so honoured when she agreed to sit down with me for How To Fail. Munroe Bergdorf is impossible to summarise: she is an activist, model, writer and broadcaster but those words can't accurately convey how much she has done to shape our culture. In her UTTERLY BRILLIANT new book, Transitional, Munroe draws on her own experience to reveal just how deeply ingrained transitioning is in human experience. It's a book that explores change and the fluidity of identity and relationships, sexuality and gender and it's so, so powerful. She joins me to talk about the long journey to live her truth and how she overcame a lack of self-worth to understand she was worthy of healthy relationships. We talk about how she navigated PTSD, panic attacks and anxiety and about her refusal to play by the rules. It is an extraordinary conversation, as befits an extraordinary person. But please do be aware that we cover some traumatic territory, including Munroe's violent rape at the hands of a stalker. I am so grateful to Munroe for her courage in talking about it. Such stories are urgently necessary to share in order to attack misplaced stigma and shame, and Munroe emerges from everything she talks about with strength, grace and integrity intact. This is not a story of being defined by trauma, but of overcoming it - and of continuing to fight for change.--Transitional by Munroe Bergdorf is published tomorrow and availabe to order here.--How To Fail With Elizabeth Day is hosted and produced by Elizabeth Day. Floss is LIVE! Happy Monday Floss fans! If you're UK based we hope you had a lush long weekend. If you're not, don't worry, we have a treat for you that will make Monday feel like saturday. Model, activist, and now author, Munroe Bergdorf, joined Floss live at the podcast show for a Floss' Five followed by a scintillating exploration of life, love and their illustrious careers. Munroe is a cornerstone of the UK queer community, is a wildly successful model and is a trailblazing voice for social justice, defending the rights of people of colour and marginalised genders. Munroe exemplifies abundance and tells Floss about why she extends the ladder behind her, as well as delivering some wise words on creating space, falling in love, personal growth journeys and maintaining both authenticity and boundaries with the public. Munroe has an incredible podcast called “ The Way We Are” and is one of the most visible transgender people in the UK. As a queer, black, trans woman she stands herself at the intersection of many multiple identities and uses her platform to advocate for other marginalized people. She is a patron of the charity Mermaids, an advocate for UN Women UK, and last year, she was added to L'Oréal's Diversity and Inclusion Advisory Board; mending her relationship with the cosmetics giant after they controversially dropped her from a campaign in 2017 for calling out white privilege and racism. Her achievements and accolades are really quite mind boggling. This week on Exactly we're joined by the ray of sunshine that is Stephanie Yeboah. She's smart, funny and fabulous and chats with Floss about how fat-phobia and white supremacy are basically evil twins. In her book Fattily Ever After: a Black Fat Girl's guide to living life Unapologetically, Stephanie shares stories of how misogynoir, the experience of both misogyny and racism, interact with fat-phobia. She discusses the role of black women throughout history, while touching on fetishization, loneliness and how black women have been marginalized in the media, even within the body positivity movement that they started. Stephanie generously shares personal anecdotes and gives us a history lesson on the colonial origins of our beauty standards, exploring desirability politics and how conversations around weight and size often ignore the significant role mental health has on how we relate to our bodies. We hope you all listen to this episode and go on to write a love letter to your body, thanking it for keeping you alive! Exactly is coming to you live on 26th May. In Part 2 of Seek to Speak's Pride Podcast Special, we will be exploring and most importantly, debunking popular myths and misconceptions around LGBTQ persons. We will be exploring the hopes that local queer communities have for the future and their message to young LGBTQ youths. We will end this episode on allyship, how you can help and what you can meaningfully do to move the needle. We'll hear from local queer advocates, individuals, and just generally brave souls who have decided to share their stories today. We hope to build a connection through these stories, and in the process, build awareness and create empathy between our local communities. While we do not claim that the views shared here are representative of the wider LGBTQ experience in Malaysia, the stories here are true and real to the people who shared them. Here is a trigger and content warning on what we will discuss today, which does touch on issues surrounding LGBTQ discrimination, common misinformation on queer folk, and a discussion on mental health, and in particular, conversion therapy. Should you find this type of content triggering, please don't listen to this episode and come back when or if you're ready. We invite you, our listeners, to keep an open mind and encourage you to talk about these issues in a meaningful and productive way. Remember, It takes a lot of courage for the people on this episode to come out and tell their stories, so we hope you feel as deeply as we do when we heard them. Working class lecturer and filmmaker Deirdre O’Neill discusses the possibility and potential of working class filmmaking today as she highlights her experiences in the British film industry and the eclipse of the working class behind and in front of the camera. Arguing that “class is not an identity,” O’Neill considers the relationship between the forces of production and the paucity of analysis today amidst the myriad identities fighting for their visibility while class is entirely eclipsed from the debate. Criticising feminism and identity politics noting the damage they have inflicted on class politics, O’Neill debates the effects of the open letter she co-authored with Julian Vigo directed at the British Film Institute’s platforming of Munroe Bergdorf during its Woman with a Movie Camera summit noting that Bergdorf is neither a woman nor a filmmaker. O’Neill details her work in cinema in the UK and in Venezuela noting the kinds of films that are made today, who has access to having their work produced, and the types of cinema that superficially addresses working class issues today. Systemic racism is deadly. We need to put in the work to educate ourselves and start to proactively dismantle destructive organizations and unquestioned assumptions. Here's how to register and here's how to find when they are and who's running. Merriam Webster improved and clarified the definition of racism. The protests are working. Minneapolis will disband the police force. Other areas are discussing defunding their police forces. "Breonna's Law" outlaws no-knock warrants in Louisville. The Louisville police chief was removed from his post after an unrelated shooting by police officers-- another unarmed black citizen, this time at a protest. Louisville's mayor has issued a request for proposal for a comprehensive, top-to-bottom review of the entire Louisville police department The officers who killed Breonna are on administrative leave. (The question of their firings or prosecutions come after the investigation.) Keep it up. Redlining is an example of deliberate, institutionally-deployed racism. We still deal with its repercussions today. The Tulsa Race Massacre of 1921 is just one of many attacks on thriving African American communities throughout history. Read The New Jim Crow about racial discrimination in law enforcement and the rise of mass incarceration. Finally New York State has a special prosecutor's office to investigate cases where a person dies while in police custody. Previously, these investigations were done by local district attorneys. This old system was crippled by built-in conflicts of interest, since local district attorneys have to work with cops on their other cases. A good article about armed cops in schools aka "school resource officers". Remember that stupid whitewashed Stonewall movie? At least the Marsh P. Johnson character appeared onscreen for four seconds. Kath is always talking about asymptotes: things approaching zero, always getting closer to it but never quite getting there.

Munroe Bergdorf invites Abby Hollick for a Duvet Day on her sofa. She explains how she's learnt to love her bedroom again after the trauma of sexual assault, but why it's still off limits for visitors. She describes growing up in the middle of nowhere and not fitting it, being bullied for being effeminate at school, and being written off by her teachers. The model, DJ and activist opens up about how she finally learnt that being trans doesn't mean you can't be happy, deciding who she wants to be and how learning to talk about her feelings has helped in her recovery from an eating disorder. Plus, she explains why she's fed up with explaining how people can be better allies to the trans community. If you have been affected by issues discussed in this episode such as eating disorders, emotional distress and sexual violence, help and support is available via the BBC Action Line: https://www.bbc.co.uk/actionline/ Presenter and Producer: Abby Hollick Executive Producer: Mike Hally Assistant Producer: Rosie Stopher Composer: Ian Kellett Duvet Days is a Square Dog Media production
We couldn't talk about 'Gender' without getting this trailblazing voice of the trans community on the podcast. Her eloquence is only outshone by her passion for society's acceptance of all genders, and I learnt so much from our conversation. I've walked away from the episode knowing how we can all open our world to things we don't understand. We might be scared of saying the wrong thing, but Munroe tells us to embrace the discomfort, because “being uncomfortable spurs growth”. So, block out the outside world and listen to this voice of inspiration and exceptional wisdom.
