Former 'new atheist' Ayaan Hirsi Ali shocked the world when she announced her conversion to Christianity in 2023. Hirsi Ali recently spoke with Dr James Orr for a Trinity Forum Cambridge event about her new faith, her concerns about radicalisation at top Universities, and the need to educate young people about Christianity. Hirsi Ali's story has become a significant milestone in the 'Surprising Rebirth' phenomenon. But does Ayaan see a similar rebirth among her peers? And how does she respond to criticism of her own conversion being 'political'? Justin Brierley was present to ask such questions of Ayaan during the Q&A, and also spoke to some young converts among the audience about their reflections on the rebirth of interest in Christianity. It's the biggest crime—and cover-up—in British history. And most people, at least until recently, haven't even heard of it. Thousands of young girls, mostly children, were systematically groomed and raped by immigrant gangs across the UK over a period of decades. Police turned the girls away. Detectives were discouraged from investigating. Politicians and prosecutors did their best to sweep it under the rug. Journalists skipped the biggest story of their lives. A culture of silence enveloped the United Kingdom. Why? Today, we talk to two women who spoke out years ago about what was happening while nearly everyone looked the other way: the British feminist and author Julie Bindel, and the author and activist Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Both took tremendous risks in highlighting the story while the legacy press largely looked away. Bindel is the author, most recently, of Feminism for Women and writes a popular Substack column. Hirsi Ali, a Free Press contributor, is the author of numerous books on radical islam, including Prey: Immigration, Islam, and the Erosion of Women's Rights, which helped bring attention to the grooming gangs scandal in 2021.  Julie and Ayaan explain today what happened, how these rapes and murders were covered up in the name of preserving “social harmony,” how it's still happening, why Elon Musk is suddenly tweeting furiously about it and how Britain's ruling class is being forced to reckon with a scandal it had, until recently, successfully ignored.  It's a story about “tolerance” run amok, and how a civilized country can convince itself to accept the most uncivilized crimes imaginable. The Heritage Foundation and Alliance Defending Freedom are honored to announce that the renowned author and social activist Ayaan Hirsi Ali will deliver the 2024 Russell Kirk Lecture. Hirsi Ali has received innumerable awards and honors for her courageous opposition to political Islamism and vigorous advocacy of the besieged Western traditions of freedom of religion, inquiry, and speech. Her Russell Kirk Lecture will be an important extension of her thinking to the current upheavals in the Middle East and in Western culture and politics.Ayaan Hirsi Ali was born in Somalia in 1969 and was raised there, in Saudi Arabia, and in Kenya. In 1992, en route to an arranged marriage to a distant cousin, Hirsi Ali escaped to the Netherlands, where she eventually became a leading member of the Dutch Parliament. She came to the United States in 2006, accepting a fellowship at the American Enterprise Institute, and became an American citizen in 2013. Her dramatic life story and the evolution of her political thinking are related in her best-selling books Infidel (2006), Nomad (2010), Heretic (2015), and Prey (2021). She is a prolific essayist, and her recent “Why I Am Now a Christian” (UnHerd, Nov. 11, 2023) has attracted worldwide attention. Presently, Hirsi Ali is a research fellow at the Hoover Institution and founder of the AHA Foundation. The namesake of the lecture, famed scholar Russell Kirk (1918–1994), established the philosophical foundations of the modern conservative movement with his landmark books The Conservative Mind (1953) and The Roots of American Order (1974). He was instrumental in the founding of National Review and Modern Age and was for many years a distinguished fellow of The Heritage Foundation.Kirk's political philosophy, summarized in his “six cannons of conservatism,” emphasized tradition and convention, transcendence and piety, political prudence, and ordered liberty. His application of those canons to contemporary issues, in a steady stream of essays, lectures, and newspaper columns, was always noteworthy and often provocative and controversial. Today, his works and legacy are being preserved and advanced by The Russell Kirk Center for Cultural Renewal. The Russell Kirk Lecture Series recognizes eminent thinkers in the tradition of “the father of American conservatism.” Previous lecturers are Bishop Robert Barron, Robert George, Roger Scruton, Shelby Steele, George Nash, Robert Reilly, David Goldman, Roger Kimball, and Gary Saul Morson. They discussed the nuances of her shift from atheism. Jonathan sets the stage, framing Hirsi Ali's journey as a departure from her traumatic past with the Muslim Brotherhood.Infidel, skeptical of the conversion, sees it as more of a political move than a spiritual awakening. He criticizes the lack of convincing elements in her narrative and views her alignment with conservative Christians as a strategic choice rooted in fear and the search for like-minded allies. Infidel humorously notes the absence of a "Road to Damascus" moment in her story and quips about waiting for "Damascus plus," adding that God has had 2000 years to make a better entrance.Phoebe expresses disappointment, characterizing the conversion as hollow. She finds it devoid of the spiritual depth one might expect and likens it to a 15th-century conversion in the 21st century. Her critique extends to Hirsi Ali's adoption of terminology like "woke ideology" without celebrating any positive aspect of her newfound faith.Cynthia, citing a potential lack of deep theological exploration in Hirsi Ali's essay, questions whether the conversion stems more from trauma than an authentic spiritual quest. She points out the danger of turning atheism into a new form of dogma and emphasizes the diversity of beliefs among atheists.Jonathan weighs in on the oversimplification in Hirsi Ali's narrative, particularly her comparison of woke ideology to Islamist extremism. He expresses sadness over what he perceives as intellectual dishonesty and a willingness to be used by right-wing organizations for their agenda. The panel collectively addresses the intersection of religion and politics, noting the challenges of separating the two in public discourse. They conclude with a sense of disappointment, viewing Hirsi Ali's conversion as a departure from genuine intellectual exploration and a move towards aligning with a particular political ideology. In summary, the panel's discussion reflects a critical analysis of Ayaan Hirsi Ali's conversion, emphasizing the need for authenticity, spiritual depth, and a careful examination of the intersection between personal beliefs and political affiliations. The tone maintains professionalism while conveying nuanced perspectives.

It's Thursday, November 16th, A.D. 2023. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Chinese gov't takes over charities The Chinese Communist Party continues to crack down on anything related to religion. The government is now considering legislation to put charities under its control. Charities have faced regulation since 2016, but have enjoyed some level of freedom from the government. Under the new law though, police and security officials will have direct control over them. Bitter Winter Magazine notes, “It is clear that the Chinese Communist Party is concerned by these Chinese charities that serve as a conduit for exchanges with the charitable arms of religious organizations abroad.”  China ranks 16th on the Open Doors' World Watch List of nations where it is most difficult to be a Christian. Psalm 14:4 asks, “Have all the workers of iniquity no knowledge, who eat up my people as they eat bread, and do not call on the LORD?” California Governor cleans San Fran streets for Commie dictator Speaking of China, the country's president, Xi Jinping, met with U.S. President Joe Biden yesterday for trade talks in northern California.  The two leaders haven't spoke for a year as tensions between the U.S. and China continue to rise.  The meeting occurs on the sidelines of the 30th Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum being held in San Francisco. The 21-member forum includes the economies of the U.S., China, Russia, Japan, Canada, and Australia.  California Democrat Governor Gavin Newsom faces criticism for just now cleaning up the streets of San Francisco, known for widespread homeless encampments and drug users. Apparently, a visiting communist dictator does the trick. House funds part of the government On Tuesday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill to temporarily fund parts of the government into the new year. This breaks with the past practice of passing an omnibus spending bill to entirely fund the government. Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters: “As long as I've been in Congress, we have governed by omnibus bills right before Christmas. It is a terrible way to run a railroad. And the reason that we're in such trouble with our federal debt is because Congress is addicted, obsessed with this deficit spending.” The short-term spending bill is expected to pass in the U.S. Senate as well. 27 GOP Senators to Pentagon: No more tax-funded abortion travel Republicans in the U.S. Senate are calling out the Defense Department for its pro-abortion policy. Twenty-seven GOP senators sent a letter on Monday to Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin. After the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last year, Austin created a travel fund to help military members get abortions. The letter stated, “You have broken your promise to the American people not to politicize the military. … Now taxpayers–many of whom have deeply-held religious and moral objections to abortions–are on the hook to facilitate the very abortions they fundamentally oppose. … Do the right thing. Rescind the Policy now.” Proverbs 24:11 says, “Deliver those who are drawn toward death, and hold back those stumbling to the slaughter.” To write a stern, 2-4 sentence letter to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin III, asking him to stop funding abortion travel for servicemembers and their dependents, send it to 1000 Defense Pentagon, Washington, DC 20301-1000. Church attendance still down 10% from COVID shutdowns Lifeway Research reports that churches have returned to in-person services, but not all churchgoers have. Lifeway found that 100% of U.S. Protestant pastors say their church met in person in August. That number is slightly up from August 2021 (89%) and significantly up since September 2020 (87%). However, only 9 in 10 churchgoers have returned since the pandemic. Pastors report attendance is 89% of what it was in early 2020. Prominent atheist repents And finally, a prominent atheist activist says she is now a Christian.  Ayaan Hirsi Ali shared the news in a recent essay. She was born in Somalia, Africa and grew up under Islam. Hirsi Ali eventually rejected that for atheism and became an important critic of Islam, especially its treatment of women. She was even associated with the leaders of New Atheism such as Richard Dawkins and Christopher Hitchens. However, atheism did not hold the answers she was looking for. Only in Christianity could she find personal meaning and purpose in life. Hirsi Ali also shared how she found hope for civilization. She noted the only thing that can fight the “resurgence of great-power authoritarianism,” “the rise of global Islam,” and “the viral spread of woke ideology” is the Christian tradition: “That legacy consists of an elaborate set of ideas and institutions designed to safeguard human life, freedom, and dignity.” Close And that's The Worldview in 5 Minutes on this Thursday, November 16th in the year of our Lord 2023. Subscribe by iTunes or email to our unique Christian newscast at www.TheWorldview.com. A new experimental university committed to free speech called the University of Austin drew mockery on Twitter when it was first announced, but the place is no joke: The college got 3,500 inquiries from professors in its first week, and has since raised $100 million dollars. Nancy and Sarah can't help feeling invigorated by this kind of innovation (even if Sarah is confused by the name, since it's pretty close to her alma mater, the University of Texas at Austin). We share our admiration for a recent speech given by founding trustee and journalist Bari Weiss at the university's inaugural event, where she diagnoses our current malaise and dares to be optimistic — even patriotic — about what comes next. How do we conserve the best of American values while creating new things? Speaking of innovations, we discuss a recent New Yorker essay about a “hook-up app for the emotionally mature,” which caters to alternative sexualities, ethical non-monogamy, and kink. Nancy is reminded of Sarah's observation that each generation tries to hack sex; Sarah is fascinated by the popularity of the app's “Fantasy Bunker,” exclusively for virtual sexting and folks who prefer the safe sex of the cloud to IRL action. As technology gives us more choices for expressing our desires, we wonder: Can pleasure really be engineered?

Vad driver Hirsi Ali i hennes värv? Hur är det att möta en helt främmande kultur som ung migrant? Och hur ser hon på den politiska utvecklingen i sitt nuvarande hemland USA?

It takes a spine to say, “Being white doesn't make you a white supremacist.” But that's Ayaan Hirsi Ali for you. She has experienced Islamist supremacy and lived to tell others the truth. Her life story is remarkable. Born in Somalia, she lived through indescribable hell, including forced genital mutilation when she was five years old. She later fled to Holland, eventually becoming a member of the Dutch parliament. Now, she serves as the exact cultural commentator we need. Her latest book, Prey: Immigration, Islam, and the Erosion of Women's Rights, reveals the threat that Islam poses to women's rights and Western liberal democracy. The Left has led a concerted campaign against Ms. Hirsi Ali. But these days, that's a badge of honor. On this episode, Glenn and Ms. Hirsi Ali talk about Afghanistan, genital mutilation, and the transgender craze overtaking America's youth. Critical race theory. Woke ideology. And politics. Identity politics has completely destroyed the Left's high moral standing with themselves. Where is their outrage about homophobia and misogyny in Afghanistan? GLAAD is all too happy to focus its activism on bakeries and bathrooms. Meanwhile, LGBTQ people are dying in Afghanistan and it's crickets. As Ms. Hirsi Ali sums it up: “I don't think of politics as a pleasurable activity.”   This Week's Sponsors: AR500 Armor - Plan now for how to protect yourself and your family. Mrs. Hirsi Ali spent her youth in Somalia, Saudi Arabia, Ethiopia and Kenya before seeking asylum in the Netherlands. In that country, she received the refugee status and fought her way to Leiden University where she studied political sciences. She became a protagonist in the fight for (Muslim) women's rights, including the fight against forced marriages and female genital mutilation. Starting at the Dutch Labour Party (PvdA), she soon switched to the People's Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD) where she was elected to parliament to continue her fight. In 2004, she received worldwide media attention when the Dutch film and documentary maker Theo van Gogh was shot and stabbed to death on the Linnaeusstraat in Amsterdam after he helped her making the controversial Islam-critical documentary Submission. A note stabbed on Mr. Van Gogh's chest constituted a death threat to Mrs. Hirsi Ali. Two years later in 2006, a documentary by the Dutch tv-show Zembla ‘exposed' that Mrs. Hirsi Ali had lied during her application process for the refugee status. This made the Minister of Integration at that time – Rita Verdonk – take away her passport before giving it back after negotiations with Prime Minister Balkenende. These occurrences eventually led to the fall of the second Balkenende cabinet. Since 2006, Mrs. Hirsi Ali has lived in the United States where she started working for the American Enterprise Institute, founded the AHA Foundation and became a common guest at American national media. Nowadays, Mrs. Hirsi Ali is a fellow at Stanford's Hoover Institution.During our interview, we will touch upon Mrs. Hirsi Ali's incredible past, her current views on socio-cultural and political issues and her ideas on the future for both the western and Islamic world.

Hello, and welcome to the twelfth issue of Bright Morning! Thank you to everyone who listened to and shared our podcast last week. For those who have not yet had a chance to listen, the link to our conversation can be found here. We had a lot of fun with last week's episode and we received some excellent feedback as well. We will be sure to record more long-form discussions in the very near future. In the meantime, we have a lot to cover this week, and so we will not waste any more of your time. Let's do this. | POLITICSSkin in the Game: The Roman Baber StoryThe Nitty Gritty:Canadian politician, Roman Baber, displayed testicular fortitude by introducing a bill that wold reduce the salaries of parliamentarians to the stimulus level that fellow Canadians receive after their businesses are shuttered by government lockdownsLast month, we wrote about Roman Baber, the Ontario MPP who was ousted from the Progressive Conservative Party for his heretical criticism of Premier Doug Ford's Church of Lockdown. Normally, when political controversies occur, those who are at the center will fold like a cheap carpet, walk back on everything that they said, and humiliate themselves as they post endless faux-apologetic Tweets. Such was the case with Ontario's former Finance Minister, Rod Phillips, when he was busted for sipping pina coladas in St. Bart's while the rest of the province was told to “stay home, stay safe, and save lives.” Fortunately, Roman Baber is not that cheap carpet. In fact, he is a leader who says what he means and means what he says. It really is a refreshing breath of fresh air in Canadian politics. Last week, Baber introduced a bill to slash the pay of parliamentarians to CERB levels so long as lockdown orders remained in place. The bill, called the “We Are All In This Together Act,” (well done) would have reduced the wages of all MPPs from approximately $2,240 per week to $500 per week. Prior to introducing the bill, Baber explained that “it's easy to pass laws that destroy people's livelihoods when you're on government salary. My PMB will encourage MPPs to fully appreciate the consequences of their actions, when many Ontarians can't afford to put food on the table.” Even if one is in favour of lockdowns, it is hard to disagree with Baber's argument. If we truly are all in this together, then should it not be the case that our leaders receive the same level of pay as those who are forcibly prevented from working? Perhaps Ontario's “top doctors,” David Williams and Eileen de Villa, have scientific explanations against this argument. Now, if there was ever a testament to the character of our elected officials, the following reaction from parliamentarians would be it. After his bill was introduced, government house leader Paul Calandra countered with a motion to have only Baber's salary reduced to $500 per week. Then, Calandra's counter-motion was passed with unanimous support. That's right. Everyone in the PCs, the NDP, and whatever is left of the Liberal Party voted in favour of Calandra's motion. Instead of debating the clear asymmetry where elected officials earn upper class wages while an overwhelming number of Ontarians are out of a job, all of the MPPs turned the debate into a joke. But why did the NDP vote in favour of this? Aren't socialist parties supposed to be advocating for worker's rights? Perhaps Baber wasn't intersectional enough. Nonetheless, proving that he was literally prepared to put his money where his mouth is, Baber also voted in favour of Calandra's motion. Of course, the motion was not passed because salaries are determined by legislative statute and cannot be amended by motion. But the message is clear: elected officials are not interested in considering the ramifications of their support for lockdowns. A wise, bald, loud-mouthed statistician by the name of Nassim Nicholas Taleb once wrote a book called Skin in the Game. In the book, Taleb explores hidden asymmetries in everyday life and argues that “bureaucracy is a construction by which a person is conveniently separated from the consequences of his or her actions.” It is hard to imagine a sentence that captures the current state of Canadian governments better than this. As we approach the one-year anniversary of “two weeks to flatten the curve,” we see, each day, how our elected officials willingly separate themselves from the consequences of their actions. Therefore, when someone like Roman Baber, who demonstrates “skin in the game,” comes along and exposes this asymmetry, it is not surprising to see our parliamentarians rush to cover it up, only then to go on lecturing the public about how “we are all in this together.”| CULTURE?Genocide? What Genocide? Ahhh China. The land of the unfree and the home of dictatorial communist rule, forced abortions, comepelled speech, concentration camps, and other daily human rights violations. Sounds pretty awful, right? Well, not according to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and President Joe Biden. According to these two wonderful, progressive, and empathetic leaders, human rights violations in China can just be chalked up to “cultural differences.” In other words, who are we to judge? Last week, Erin O'Toole, leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, wrote an op-ed for the Toronto Star arguing that Canada should call upon the International Olympic Committee to relocate the 2022 Olympics out of Beijing. O'Toole argued that it is imperative for Canada to take a stand against China because “there is genocide going on in Xinjiang. The Chinese embassy in Washington bragged on social media about forced sterilization measures being undertaken, going so far as to refer to Uighur women as ‘baby-making machines.'” O'Toole cited other human rights violations, such as the police state in Hong Kong and the kidnapping of two Canadians who have been held hostage for two years (which Trudeau has done nothing about). It was an admirable stance by O'Toole, because until very recently, the only world leader to take aggressive stances towards China has been the former United States President, Donald Trump. Leave it to Canada's snowboard instructor-in-chief, Trudeau, to entirely miss the point. Ignoring the arguments that O'Toole put forward, Trudeau instead questioned whether or not we should be describing what is occurring in Xinjiang as “genocide.” Amidst all the “uh's” and “um's” that are so characteristic of Trudeau's speeches, he said that the word “genocide” is “extremely loaded” and should only be used when it is “justified and demonstrated.” This is true, but it is also true that there is genocide occuring in China, as there are currently over one million Uighurs in concentration camps in Xinjiang. Moreover, Trudeau is not actually concerned with misusing the word “genocide,” because he has called himself the leader of a “genocide state” (referring to Canada). In other words, he is happy to take up the mantle of woke virtue-signalling and self-flagellating, but when it comes out to advancing western values - such as condemning literal genocide states - Trudeau is noticably silent.South of the border, President Biden gave a similar response when asked about the Uighur concentration camps during a CNN Town Hall. The response is nearly incoherent, but there was one utterance glaring at us. Biden said that “[Xi Jinping] gets it. Culturally, there are different norms that their leaders are expected to follow.” That's right, folks, forced sterilization and slavery are just “different norms.” We wish we were surprised by these statements, but we're not. Utterances like these are commonplace for those who are sympathetic to woke ideology. This cultural relativist nonsense, where morally repugnant actions are explained away as “cultural differences,” is a tenet of postcolonialism - an Applied Postmodernist Theory suggesting that westerners who are critical of anything in non-western countries are continuing the legacy of colonialism, and henceforth acting as oppressors. This is why people like Justin Trudeau are also quick to suggest that “free speech has limits” when it comes to cartoon depictions of Muhammad, but have nothing to say about female genital mutiliation or homosexuals being publicly hanged in Islamic nations. Cultural relativism, when imbibed as an approach towards foreign intervention, leaves us impotent as a nation. Sadly, the slavery and genocide will continue as our leaders fumble around the issues, like an awkward teenager who cannot muster up the courage to move in for a kiss.*Update: As of Monday, February 22, 2021 (past the date that this episode was recorded), Canada's Parliament voted to recognize Uighur concentration camps in China as genocide. However, Trudeau did not vote on the issue. Now why might that be?| POLITICSLegal gun owners are the problem, criminals are notThe Nitty GrittyLeaders north and south of the border are getting lax on gun-related crimes and looking to reduce sentences for those offenders. The same leaders that also want to take away your guns. Because that's the problem..As if there weren't enough asymmetries last week, Trudeau decided to introduce another one, just for the fun of it. Two days after Trudeau complained that growing gun violence in Canada is “unacceptable,” his government introduced legislation to reduce sentences for gun-related crimes including, but not limited to, weapons trafficking, use of firearms in commission of an offence, armed robbery, armed extortion, and illegal discharge of a firearm with intent. The full list can be found in this Toronto Sun article. Why would the Trudeau government possibly do such a thing? According to the Justice Minister David Lametti, “these are people with health problems. These are single mothers. These are young people who have perhaps made a couple of mistakes.” This is laughable nonsense. Robbing someone at gunpoint is not a mistake. Trafficking illegal guns is not a mistake. Illegally discharging a firearm with intent is not a mistake. Each of these criminal offences are conscious decisions. When this was rightly pointed out, Lametti blamed the former Conservative government of Stephen Harper - just as the Liberals always do. However, the mandatory minimums that Lametti had been complaining about were actually put in place by Justin Trudeau's father, Pierre Trudeau. It is amusing how such an important detail was overlooked. Trudeau has a habit of lecturing the public about gun violence in lieu of discussing actual policy. He has already moved forward on his plan to ban 1,500 “military-style assault rifles,” even though there is no such thing as a “military-style assault rifle.” This is not an insignificant detail either - “military-style” or “assault-style” are not real classifications for firearms. Instead, they are scare words that Trudeau uses to drum up support for his policy. While Trudeau is banning guns based on their appearance, legal gun owners are paying the price (literally). Trudeau released his “plan” for the firearm buyback program, which will likely see Canadians receiving pennies on the dollar in return for their firearms. At the same time, criminals who do not have firearms licenses will continue purchasing illegal guns, using them for illicit purposes, and then be blessed with reduced sentences - all at the good graces of our Prime Minister. Further Listening

In her newest book, Prey, Hirsi Ali is asking a new tough question: Is the rise of sexual assault cases in Europe correlated with the mass arrival of immigrants from Muslim-majority countries? As a refugee herself, Hirsi Ali knows first-hand the struggles of integration and assimilation that are necessary in immigrating to a new nation. Rather than restricting immigration, Hirsi Ali is calling for Europeans to reform their broken system that allows young men to bring sexual violence and marginalization of women from the Muslim world into Europe. This violence isn’t a figment of alt-right propaganda, Hirsi Ali insists, even if neo-Nazis exaggerate it. She says it’s a real problem that Europe—and the world—cannot continue to ignore. Hoover research fellow Ayaan Hirsi Ali’s new book is Prey: Immigration, Islam, and the Erosion of Women’s Rights. It examines the sharp rise in the number of sexual assaults in Western Europe that coincides with the sharp rise in illegal immigration from Muslim-majority countries. The book points out that almost three million people have arrived illegally in Europe since 2009, close to two million in 2015 alone. A majority have come from Muslim-majority countries. Two-thirds are male, and 80 percent of asylum applicants are under the age of 35. In this conversation, Peter Robinson and Hirsi Ali explore the cause-and-effect relationships occurring in these countries, and the responses from European governments, law enforcement, and most surprisingly, from feminists in both Europe and the United States who seem very eager to deflect attention away from illegal immigration, a point the book makes very strongly.

As the United States and the world embark on fraught conversations about race, history, law enforcement, and the underpinnings of our very civilization, Ayaan Hirsi Ali joins Peter Robinson for an enlightening conversation. A refugee from Africa, Hirsi Ali fled to Europe to escape an arranged marriage, becoming an activist, (now former) member of the Dutch Parliament, and now a research fellow at the Hoover Institution. With a different set of life experiences and perspective from American-born Blacks, Hirsi Ali discusses how, as a Somalian, she views America as the best place on earth for minorities to grow up and achieve their potential. While acknowledging the hardships and miseries that American Blacks have endured and that racism still exists in many quarters of American society, Hirsi Ali emphatically believes that America is more than capable of solving racial inequalities, provided it preserves the institutions that ultimately ended slavery and empowered the protest movements of the 1960s that birthed the Civil Rights Movement. As she wrote in a recent column for the Wall Street Journal, an opinion she reiterates on this show, “There will be no resolution of America’s . . . problems if free thought and free speech are no longer upheld as sacrosanct. . . . Without them, honest deliberation, mutual learning, and the American ethic of problem-solving are dead.” Recorded on June 25, 2020

Recorded on July 12, 2017 Ayaan Hirsi Ali joins Peter Robinson to discuss her new book, The Challenge of Dawa: Political Islam as Ideology and Movement and How to Contain It, and her views on the challenges facing Western civilization in regards to political Islam. She argues that Islam needs to be separated into two different parts, one part of religion and the other part, political philosophy. She concedes that many aspects of the religious part of Islam are peaceful but argues that the political side is much more concerning due to its focus on Dawa, which means “to plead or to call non-Muslims to Islam.” This call to convert people to Islam is what she argues was a driving force behind the spread of Islam throughout history. Hirsi Ali argues that American political philosophy and classical liberalism are young philosophies in comparison to the fourteen centuries of Islamic political doctrine and that its age and layered-ness are often underestimated by Western minds who are more familiar with younger political philosophies. She discusses the critiques of the philosopher Karl Popper of communism and fascism and how they relate directly to the ideologies of Islam. She argues that the language of appeasement often used toward radical Islamic terrorism is too gentle and that discussions of how to deal with Islam need to be considerably franker. Earlier this year Ayaan Hirsi Ali was called before Congress to testify on her book The Challenge of Dawa. She discusses her testimony and that although she was invited by a Democrat senator to speak “about the ideology of radical Islam,” the Democrats present didn’t ask her a single question because they were likely uncomfortable with what she had to say about Islam. She argues that just as Western civilizations have defeated dangerous ideologies in the past, she is optimistic that Western civilization will succeed against political Islam for, as she says, “[Jihadis] can’t destroy us without permission.” She says if we take the fight to the “battlefield of ideas” we can defeat radical Islamic ideologies with Western beliefs. About the Guest Ayaan Hirsi Ali was born in Mogadishu, Somalia, in 1969. As a young child she was subjected to female genital mutilation; as she grew up she embraced Islam and strove to live as a devout Muslim. But she began to question aspects of her faith. One day, while listening to a sermon on the many ways women should be obedient to their husbands, she couldn't resist asking, "Must our husbands obey us too?" In 1992 Hirsi Ali fled to the Netherlands to escape a forced marriage. There she was given asylum and in time citizenship. She quickly learned Dutch and was able to study at the University of Leiden, earning her MA in political science. Working as a translator for Somali immigrants, she saw firsthand the inconsistencies between liberal Western society and tribal Muslim cultures. From 2003 to 2006 Hirsi Ali served as an elected member of the Dutch parliament. While in parliament, she focused on furthering the integration of non-Western immigrants into Dutch society and on defending the rights of Muslim women. In 2004 Hirsi Ali gained international attention following the murder of Theo van Gogh. Van Gogh had directed her short film Submission, a film about the oppression of women under Islam. The assassin, a radical Muslim, left a death threat for her pinned to Van Gogh's chest. In 2006 Hirsi Ali had to resign from parliament when the then Dutch minister for immigration decided to revoke her citizenship, arguing that Ayaan had mislead the authorities at the time of her asylum application. The Dutch courts, however, confirmed that Hirsi Ali was indeed a legitimate Dutch citizen, leading to the fall of the government. Disillusioned with the Netherlands, she subsequently moved to the United States. In 2007 Hirsi Ali founded the AHA Foundation to protect and defend the rights of women in the United States from harmful traditional practices. Today the foundation is the leading organization working to end violence that shames, hurts, or kills thousands of women and girls in the United States each year and puts millions more at risk. Hirsi Ali is a fellow with the Future of Diplomacy Project at the Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at the Harvard Kennedy School, a visiting scholar at the American Enterprise Institute in Washington, DC, and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. Hirsi Ali is currently researching the relationship between the West and Islam. She must live with round-the-clock security, as her willingness to speak out and her abandonment of the Muslim faith have made her a target for violence by Islamic extremists. Ayaan Hirsi Ali was named one of Time magazine's "100 Most Influential People" of 2005, one of the Glamour Heroes of 2005, and Reader's Digest's European of the Year for 2005. She is the best-selling author of Infidel (2007) and Heretic: Why Islam Needs a Reformation Now (2015). (Playing time: 42:24)

In a recent post covering a discussion between Ayaan Hirsi Ali and Maajid Nawaz at the JW3 in London, I wrote the following regarding their critics: Allegations — often nothing more than insinuations — have been made that Hirsi Ali and Nawaz have lied about who they are, that they don’t mean what they say, and that they are either greedy and self-serving or greedy and self-hating or both. A paradigmatic example of what the late Christopher Hitchens called “the pseudo-Left new style, whereby if your opponent thought he had identified your lowest possible motive, he was quite certain that he had isolated the only real one.” Hitchens offered this remark, not just as a matter of observation, but from personal experience. He had set out the moral arguments in favor of the removal of Saddam Hussein at abundant length and with a rare passion and clarity. Salient to his advocacy was the Iraqi regime’s mass-murder of Kurds and Marsh Arabs, and the torments suffered by Iraqis more generally at the hands of a despotism of uncommon paranoia … The post Bad Faith: Sam Harris, Omer Aziz, and Islam appeared first on Quillette.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali was born in Mogadishu, Somalia, was raised Muslim, and spent her childhood and young adulthood in Africa and Saudi Arabia. In 1992, Hirsi Ali came to the Netherlands as a refugee. She earned her M.A. in political science and worked for the Dutch Labor party. She has served as a Dutch parliamentarian, fighting for the rights of Muslim women in Europe, the enlightenment of Islam, and security in the West. She was named by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world, and by Reader's Digest  as "European of the Year." She is the author of The Caged Virgin: An Emancipation Proclamation for Women and Islam, and the acclaimed Infidel.  In this conversation with D.J. Grothe, Ayaan Hirsi Ali recounts opportunities that have allowed her to become emancipated from Islam, emphasizing that every woman in Islamic societies can likewise work against oppression and "have faith in reason." She talks about how 9-11 was a turning point in her "gradual process of enlightenment" to renounce Islam. She explains why she rejects Islam and all religions, even while recognizing that religion has some positive characteristics. She draws distinctions between favorable concepts of God in Judaism or Christianity versus destructive concepts of God within Islam. She argues that Islam, unlike Christianity and Judaism, is not a just a religion, but is a political ideology at its core, and that it is fundamentally incompatible with liberal democracies. She contends that anyone who cares about the freedom of individuals should work to "defeat Islam." She recounts how gay rights figured prominently in her initial decision to speak out and write as a Muslim apostate. She explores why Islam needs its own Voltaire, and why it has been so difficult for Islam to have its own Reformation or Enlightenment. She shares examples from the Koran that demand from Muslims complete submission, even at the expense of one's empathy and conscience. She talks about reform movements within Islam, including Bahá'í, the followers of Āgā Khān, and Ahmadiyya, and why they have failed to moderate the core political ideology of the Muslim faith. She talks about every individual Muslim is commanded in the Koran both to do good and to punish evil, and the implications of this doctrine for the rule of law in society. She talks about why liberal reinterpretation of religious texts is easier in Christianity and Judaism than within Islam. She discusses her own experience of female genital mutilation, and how the practice is used to enforce the dogma of virginity. She compares and contrasts female genital mutilation with male circumcision, and argues that both practices -- cutting into the bodies of children based on religious belief -- should be stopped. She talks about her involvement in slain director Theo van Gogh's movie Submission, which focused on how Islam harms women. She defends 17-year old Rifqa Bary's decision to convert from Islam to Christianity, even though in Ayaan Hirsi Ali's view it is just going "from one superstition to another." She expresses outrage at the death threats and other reactions from the Muslim community to Bary's decision. And she explains how situations like Bary's and Van Gogh's murder, along with the death threats that she has received, only motivate her to speak out more, because "it is a worse kind of death to be alive but to be silenced."
