In this month’s brand-new Side Chat, we’re getting into how we went from obsessed with life purpose to feeling

A landmark episode of Haven as the whole cast gathers for Audrey Parker's birthday in a Shining-esque hotel is the subject of today's episode. Hosts Alex and Rich French are here to discuss the newest trouble that has thrown our favorite Maine-ites for a loop. And after that, we have a special feature! We are playing Haven Survivor! In the spirit of an Agatha Christie story, we wanted to eliminate each Haven cast member one by one and we use a Brant Steele simulation to do so. This episode features the first chapter of that and the Bonus Episode that was released alongside Episode 9 will feature the rest of the Survivor content. You can access the BrantSteele template for Haven here:(https://brantsteele.net/survivor/pearlislands/episode01.php) Show Notes:00:00 - Intro*00:36 - Summary*11:05 - Ratings*13:30 - Discussion*14:50 - Vietnam War (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnam_War)23:15 - The Sixth Sense (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0167404/)25:45 - Jose Molina (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0596711/)26:42 - Misery (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Misery_(novel))36:20 - Haven Dance Party (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eP-SgREXe3Q)39:15 - Spinal Tap (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dAargSCXQaQ)39:20 - Haven Survivor Simulator*39:25 - Survivor (https://www.cbs.com/shows/survivor/)40:00 - BrantSteele (https://brantsteele.com/)45:00 - Fredalba (https://open.spotify.com/artist/3VeDmrWz6bVzZLCdMjRe7y?autoplay=true) Links:Website // Email // u/HavensTroubled // Patreon // Haven on Netflix // Haven Wiki // IMDb // Read The Colorado KidMusic by: Antti Luode (Creative Commons 3.0)Check Out his Portfolio Here // Check Out his Blog Here

Paul Tillich said, “Language… has created the word “loneliness” to express the pain of being alone. And it has created the word “solitude” to express the glory of being alone.” Language is so powerful and is used to harm and heal others. When speaking the same language we can often misunderstand one another but when we learn to speak the language of love with intent and purpose we break down barriers between each other. As an introvert, I love alone time. It recharges me and keeps me sane. But “alone” is a different sensation than “lonely,” and I’ve all too often felt lonely, even though I enjoy being alone. Being alone can be thrilling and energizing, mostly because it’s a luxury that we don’t always have when we live or work with other people. It’s like going on vacation—the reason it’s enjoyable is precisely because there’s a time limit. Going on a permanent vacation would be boring and purposeless. But loneliness isn’t at all dependent on who is or isn’t physically around you. It’s a form of isolation that you carry with you; sometimes it’s worse because you’re surrounded by other people. So, what is loneliness, exactly? I think there are two major varieties, and understanding them is critical to knowing what to do about your loneliness—because there’s definitely a wrong way to handle it. As I began to love myself is a poem accredited to Charlie Chaplin supposedly written for his 70th birthday. This is not the case, and the author is unknown, but nevertheless, this poem resonates deeply. The author eloquently captures the essence of the human experience and the lessons they learned in life. As I began to love myself and live in compassionate kindness towards myself, I've learned this is the path to a happy, authentic, fulfilled life, even though it's not always "easy." Is it time to love what you hate? In life, there are so many tiny things that we 'hate.' For e.g. I hate cleaning, you hate traffic, she hates pumpkins, he hates barking dogs. And so it escalates, all the little things we hate compound into larger things to hate. Before you know it we're drowning in hatred for ourselves and one another that we can't see our ways clear of. We are very selective of the things and tasks we find love worthy, but let's stop being hypocrites within ourselves and be accountable for our attitudes in the small moments as well as the life-defining moments. That is how you start to love what you hate, through the attitude you bring to the small moments of your life that compound into a love-filled life. LISTEN to LEARN more. For most people, love is like a conditional equation where specific parameters need to be satisfied for the experience to be real. Love is never conditional but is infinite and thereby incalculable. Have you noticed how judgemental we are with ourselves and one another? In this episode, we investigate what the idiom “Don’t judge a book by its cover” means. We are experts at pattern recognition, assimilating data and naming it. We believe this is learning, but it’s not. Many stop learning the moment they can name something and instead resort to recognising patterns and making judgements. None of us likes to be judged, and we need to remember that in the library of life, we each have a unique ISBN but come from the same printing press. When we treat each other with curiosity, empathy and compassion, it is impossible to judge a book by the cover. LISTEN to LEARN MORE. After visiting the Lost Gardens of Heligan in Cornwall, UK, I was inspired by the labour of love it took to restore the 200 hectares to its former glory. Considering that this restoration project was a passion of John Willis for nine years, I had to ask myself what overriding passion or labour of love do I have in my life. Realising that there is no one thing, gave me pause, but then I realised this life of mine is my labour of love. We don't need a life passion, that one thing that consumes us, our lives in their entirety can be our labour of love when we engage with it fully. LISTEN to LEARN more. Often we don't experience or see the love others have for us because we are unfamiliar with what our love language may be. The Five Love Languages, which is the groundbreaking work of Dr Gary Chapman, teaches how we can effectively give and receive love to others when we understand our love languages. Have you ever thought of what the cost of fear is in your life? It’s not necessarily a monetary value but perhaps an effect on your physical health and spiritual and mental wellbeing. There is a constant stream of wellbeing in the universe. When in fear, we are risk-averse and not able to create our lives as we desire them to be. This is a timely edition of the podcast, given the attention to cyber security, digital privacy and jobs creation in the United States. If you believe that technology can be a force for good in society, then you'll enjoy the opportunity presented in this discussion to drive positive change through Civic participation. My guest, Jonathan Friebert leads External Affairs for Microsoft's US Government Affairs Department and works with Microsoft partners to advocate for positive technology public policies through Microsoft's Voices for Innovation (VFI) initiative. VFI is a community of more than 90,000 technology leaders in the U.S. who focus on public policy advocacy in the technology sector on issues such as STEM funding, online privacy, software piracy, cloud computing regulations, cybersecurity, IP protection and government procurement mandates. The conversation focuses on computer science curriculum in schools, why the current technology legislation is outdated, online privacy and how government and the private sector can partner to deliver 21st century skills to US workers. Jonathan also points to some examples of partners that have engaged in the civic discourse to effect change. As I do with each of my podcasts, Jonathan and I also discuss his personal journey, role models and recommended books. Jonathan's Book Recommendation is: Rising Strong In our conversation on job and skills training, Jonathan talks about how "coding" could become the next trade taught in schools. Reference from the discussion are here - Wired The Next Big Blue-Collar Job Is Coding WHEN I ASK people to picture a coder, they usually imagine someone like Mark Zuckerberg: a hoodied college dropout who builds an app in a feverish 72-hour programming jag—with the goal of getting insanely rich and, as they say, “changing the world.” But this Silicon Valley stereotype isn’t even geographically accurate. The Valley employs only 8 percent of the nation’s coders. All the other millions? They’re more like Devon, a programmer I met who helps maintain a security-software service in Portland, Oregon. He isn’t going to get fabulously rich, but his job is stable and rewarding: It’s 40 hours a week, well paid, and intellectually challenging. “My dad was a blue-collar guy,” he tells me—and in many ways, Devon is too.
