When you throw something away, it's gone as far as you are concerned. But in fact, it's still around and will most likely end up in a landfill. Landfills are where solid waste goes to build up into unpleasant mounds and where organic waste, like food that is thrown away, goes to fester and decompose, giving off huge amounts of methane gas. Methane is one of the most potent greenhouse gases and a big contributor to climate change. Whether you call it trash, waste or garbage, it's in our interest to reduce the amount we generate, so that less is sent to landfills. According to the United Nations, food waste now accounts for up to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions.

On April 17, the Rensselaer Environmental Coalition and the CIty of Rensselaer started an Article 78 proceeding against the state Department of Environmental Conservation, challenging their recent renewal of the permit for the Dunn landfill. On April 29, REC will hold a community educational meeting to discuss the permit renewal, the threat from PFAS contamination and the Leachate Loophole at the George Education Center, 1 University Place, Rens. at 6:30 PM. Residents near Chiquita Canyon Landfill are literally bleeding from their eye sockets, developing rare diseases, and being forced to barricade themselves in their homes while politicians offer nothing but air purifiers and tax complications. $25 million in hush money from the landfill operators won't cover the cancer diagnoses, respiratory illnesses, and destroyed property values as this underground chemical nightmare expands unchecked. Officials claim they're "monitoring the situation" while refusing to declare the obvious state of emergency that would actually help these taxpayers relocate from this toxic hellscape. Is anyone surprised that politicians are more concerned with bureaucratic red tape than stopping a 10-YEAR environmental disaster?
