In this podcast, Peter Ballerstedt, a forage agronomist and ruminant nutritionist, challenges conventional wisdom about animal agriculture's role in human health and sustainable food production. He argues that ruminant animals, like cows, sheep, and goats, are crucial for converting inedible plant material into nutrient-dense food for humans while improving soil health and biodiversity.Ballerstedt explains ruminants' unique digestive process, which allows them to thrive on a forage-only diet. Microorganisms in their rumen break down cellulose, converting it into fatty acids and microbial protein that the animal can absorb and use.He believes current dietary guidelines promoting plant-based diets may be misguided, as populations consuming less than 30% of calories from animal-sourced foods face increased nutrient deficiencies. Animal foods provide essential nutrients in a highly bioavailable form.Ballerstedt argues for increased animal-sourced food consumption across all populations to improve global health and address nutrient deficiencies. While acknowledging environmental concerns, he highlights the benefits of properly managed grazing on soil health, biodiversity, and carbon sequestration.Looking ahead, Ballerstedt sees ruminant animal agriculture as a solution to nourishing a growing population while protecting the planet, envisioning a future where well-nourished individuals collaborate to solve global issues. His insights challenge listeners to reconsider assumptions about food production and recognize ruminants' vital role in creating a healthier, more sustainable future.---------------------------Connect with Peter Ballerstedt:Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GrassBasedHealthYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@Don_Pedro-SodFather/videosInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/grassbasedX: https://twitter.com/GrassBasedSubStack: https://ruminati.substack.com/Website: https://grassbasedhealth.blogspot.com/ Chances are, you wouldn't be listening to this podcast if you didn't need to change your life and get healthier. This episode with Peter Ballerstedt makes the case that animal-based foods are nutritionally optimal for humans, and provide a sustainable way to feed the world.Peter is a leading advocate for ruminant animal agriculture. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Kentucky in 1986, specializing in forage management and utilization, minoring in ruminant nutrition. He was the forage extension specialist at Oregon State University from 1986 to 1992. Peter worked for Barenberg USA, a major forage seed company from 2011 until his retirement this past July. And he is the current president of the American Forage and Grassland Council.Peter describes himself as building bridges between two tribes he belongs to -- those who produce grass-eating animals like cattle and sheep, and those who particularly appreciate the nutritional and health benefits of an ancestral diet that includes animal products like meat, eggs and dairy. He is in demand internationally as a conference speaker for both tribes. In this episode, Peter highlights the importance of animal-sourced foods in providing essential amino acids, vitamins, and minerals. He emphasizes the unique ecological niche of ruminants and their role in up-cycling nutrients. Peter also addresses the debate between grass-fed and conventional beef, taking into account the affordability and availability in dietary choices. He discusses global trends in plant vs. animal-based diets and the potential negative impact of plant-based diets on public health. Finally, Peter addresses the environmental impact of plant-based vs. meat-based diets and challenges the notion that they are detrimental to the environment. He explains the carbon cycle and the role of grasslands in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. Peter emphasizes the complexity of sustainability and the need to consider economic and societal factors. He also compares emissions from livestock and plant agriculture, highlighting the importance of taking into account the full context. The conversation explores the feasibility of feeding a growing population with animal agriculture and the potential for expanding herds on marginal lands. Peter concludes by discussing signs of progress and the importance of bottom-up change to influence public opinion and policy.References and links:* Podcast/Blog: http://grassbasedhealth.blogspot.com* White, R. Episode 2390 - On this Friday's show Vinnie Tortorich and "The Sodfather" Dr. Peter Ballerstedt discuss the health of the environment and nutrition through a ruminant revolution, and more. https://vinnietortorich.com/2023/09/ruminant-revolution-dr-peter-ballerstedt-episode-2390 PLEASE SUPPORT OUR SPONSORS YOU CAN WATCH THIS EPISODE ON YOUTUBE - Pandemic of Metabolic Illness Dr. Peter Ballerstedt returns to the show and is known as the “Sodfather.” Peter is a Forage Agronomist and has expansive knowledge of agriculture, the environment, and nutrition. He explains 3 key messages he is trying to spread: public health needs animal foods a sustainable food system is only possible with livestock, particularly ruminants. livestock and animal foods are a part of our (and others) varied cultural heritage Vinnie gets tired of the fast narratives put out by popular vegan doctors. (4:00) He referenced recent guest Dr. Bill Schindler who has studied human development back as far as 3 million years. (5:15) Peter adds that grasslands need ruminants for soil to be healthy and growth to be sustainable. Early humans discovered tools that helped their brain development; they went from being scavengers to apex hunters. They discuss the disconnect that happens as certain tech progresses. (11:30) People are becoming even more removed from certain aspects of life which makes things feel as if they are going in reverse. Peter asks: is it the tech, or what we choose to do with the tech? He gives an example of how Gary Taubes is doing some current research. They discuss the politicization through such campaigns as “meat is murder,” etc. (15:00) Reconnection with the hard wall of physics, biology, and endocrinology should make people realize how negative campaigns against meat are misguided. The proof is the current Pandemic of Metabolic Illness happening. Obesity is a symptom of malnutrition—he elaborates. Ruminant Revolution Peter is encouraging a “ruminant revolution,” which is to improve the productivity and efficiency of ruminant agriculture globally. (20:00) He and Vinnie also remind people that doctors are not your boss, they work for you. (22:00) People need to become better informed for their benefit. They discuss how politics has entered the food system. (26:30) Peter gives examples from both Germany and Brazil about processes that both didn't work and do work. (28:00) He explains what arable land is (able to be plowed and grown). All arable land is agricultural, but not all agricultural land is arable. Vinnie asks Peter's opinion about the recent uproar in Ireland about killing thousands of cattle to reduce emissions. (41:00) We must figure out how to feed the world the appropriate amount of animal-sourced food, for public health. Even if the U.S. got rid of animal agriculture, it would only reduce global emissions by approximately 2%. However, it would also imbalance the food system and reduce nutrition globally. One study that is never discussed states that a wildlife-dominated savannah and a livestock-dominated one are equal. (58:00) Those who are pushing the Dietary Guidelines for metabolic health are at least 10 years behind on the science. (1:02:00) Vinnie shares an idea that he and Nina Teicholz have had about creating a health think tank to better get the truth to the public. According to recent research, nearly 40% of older Americans are not getting enough protein. Current protein recommendations also represent a minimum rather than an ideal protein intake and the highest quality sources of protein (animal products) are often demonized. As a result, many of us are under-eating protein which can cause a number of deleterious symptoms such as cravings, overeating, weight gain and a loss of muscle mass. Tune in to this week's podcast with protein expert, Dr. Peter Ballerstedt, to learn all about the often-ignored nuance in the protein conversation and how you can leverage protein's superpowers to optimize your health and feel your best. (2:55) Peter explains the process of ruminant digestion and how it benefits humans and is essential for the soil and environment. (5:23) Peter then mentions that some Oxford scientists revealed that the wrong metric has been being used to estimate global warming. (6:45) They then discuss how people have been "sold a bill of goods" about information comparing the impact of animal-source protein vs. plant-based protein. (8:43) There is no sustainable food system without livestock agriculture, especially ruminants. (15:34) Peter emphasizes that the ruminant is a "wonder of creation" and chats a bit about that. (16:46) Vinnie makes the critical point of how people have convinced themselves that we are not part of the food chain and elaborates on that point. (20:08) They go on to chat about how there is hard evidence of how people are being harmed because they are consuming too little animal protein. (22:40) Peter brings up a process of farming done in Brazil that has been beneficial. (29.:44) After further discussion of energy and the environment and why we need ruminants, Vinnie and Peter discuss human development and how it's been affected. (38:32) They chat in detail about plant protein, fiber, and the working of amino acids like lysine. (39:45) Peter also talks about dietary choices in general. (52:30) Vinnie and Peter end the show with a brief chat about upcoming speaking engagements and cowboy boots. (56:33) PURCHASE BEYOND IMPOSSIBLE The documentary launched on January 11! Dr. Peter Ballerstedt may have the most appropriate (and incredible) nickname of all time: they call him "Don Pedro, the Sodfather of the Rumanati". He studied and has a PhD in Agronomy and Ruminant Nutrition, but also practices and understands the benefits of a LCHF (low-carb, high fat) diet. His knowledge of soil health, cows' roles in supporting our ecosystems, and human health, places him in a unique position to educate on many of the conflicting ideas floating around about beef. The Sodfather does not disappoint - pay your respects! YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cRmwobXCc4c

He was the forage extension specialist at Oregon State University from 1986 to 1992. He currently works in the forage seed industry. Peter's personal experience has led him to re-examine human diet and health. What he has learned doesn't agree with the advice given for the past several decades. Peter is an advocate for ruminant animal agriculture and the essential role of animal source foods in the human diet. He strives to build bridges between producers, consumers, and researchers across a wide variety of scientific disciplines – increasing awareness of metabolic health and ruminant animal agriculture's essential role in social, economic and ecological sustainability. Peter has spoken at many different events in the US and internationally. Many of his presentations are available on YouTube. Peter and Nancy live in western Oregon with their two dogs, Conor and Noni. Testimonials “Peter Ballerstedt is extremely knowledgeable about forage/livestock production, seed production and marketing, and human nutrition. He has a special talent for connecting with audiences of all types, which is why I have recommended him to conference/meeting planners on numerous occasions. In particular, a talk he regularly gives pertaining to meat in human diets is, in my opinion, so important and informative that virtually every American could benefit from hearing it.” Don Ball, Professor Emeritus, Auburn University - “… presentations are scientifically accurate, factually based and enthusiastically delivered. Presentations are effective, efficient, informative, prepared for each specific audience, ranging from forage management for farmers in Kentucky to an international group of scientific peers.” “… is a dynamic, effective, informative and entertaining speaker. Presentations are always scientifically accurate, factually based and enthusiastically delivered.” “… From basic forage management to cutting edge “Red Meat and Health” presentations are always well received as witnessed by the many repeat invitations” Garry Lacefield, Professor Emeritus, University of Kentucky - “As a forage agronomist with a deep understanding of the history and politics of nutrition in America, Peter Ballerstedt navigates the intricate and interconnected systems of how our food--and our knowledge about food--is produced in a lively and thought-provoking style. He provides a unique perspective on some of the wicked problems in our food system and explores the complexity of issues such as chronic disease and sustainability with clarity, wit, and wisdom.” Adele Hite , PhD MPH RD - critical nutrition studies scholar and blogger - “A friend and colleague for 20+ years in our common educational training area of forage-livestock systems, but his talks on nutritional myths changed my life; by restricting carbohydrates, I lost 30 pounds and normalized my blood pressure, no longer needing medication. You need to become informed, and Peter makes it interesting and entertaining!” David B. Who is this guy and what's he about? "I'm trained as a forage agronomist and ruminant nutritionist. I received my Doctorate from the University of Kentucky in 1986 and I joined the faculty of Oregon State University as the Extension Forage Specialist. In 2007 I realized that I was an obese pre-diabetic. I am no longer either, thanks to several clinicians, researchers and authors. About a decade ago I started to attend and then speak at international conferences focused on therapeutic carbohydrate reduction and metabolic health. I've gotten to learn a great deal about human nutrition and metabolic health while I've been on this health-restoration journey. I've also come to appreciate the gaps that exists between science and policy, and between agricultural producers and the rest of society. To bridge these gaps, I've become an advocate for forage and ruminant animal agriculture, and the essential role of ruminant animal products in human health and flourishing. About ten years ago I started blogging and posting on social media about what I called Grass Based Health (“Grass Roots Health” was already taken). It represents that integration of what I've learned – healthy soils, healthy plants, healthy animals, and healthy people, all thanks to ruminant animal agriculture. It also reflected my previous belief about the superior nutritional quality of grass-fed livestock products. I no longer hold that position and the name reminds me of that journey. The fact that approximately 96% of what the global domestic ruminant herd consumes is not human-edible plant material justifies calling ruminant animal agriculture “grass based.” The “Ruminati” grew out of the people who had seen my presentations or read my postings. It is my name for those people who understand to some degree some portion of the production-through consumption landscape and the disciplines that serve it. I've been given the title of Don Pedro, aka the SodFather. While I'm absolutely serious about the essential role of animal source food in the human diet, and the unique advantages of ruminant animal agriculture in producing those foods, I believe that humor (at least what I think is humor) is helpful in building bridges. The “Meet Your Herdmates” Sodcast is a new effort to introduce members of the Ruminati to each other, so that we might all learn from each other." A low carb diet with plenty of meat is important. We evolved because we ate meat. He and Vinnie met at Low Carb USA! High fiber is important to feed beef livestock - better for them, makes it better for us, too. WE NEED COWS Cows are not causing climate change. It's not even their farts that would. The UN put out a report that claimed livestock produced more emission than all transportation. What they DON'T acknowledge is that study is recognized as being flawed and its authors even retracted and corrected it. The reality is they make up about 2% of emissions. We DO need to get better at controlling how we raise our food. 1/32nd of an apple represents arable land on the world. 1/4th represents land that is good for grazing. MEAT MYTHS There are so many myths propagated by vegans about meat growth and consumption. "Raising cattle is a waste of water." Truth: Cows are not 'destroying' water - they recycle it. "Cows are ruining the land." Truth: Ruminant animals are incredibly important for our soil. They have evolved with the grasses. There wouldn't BE society like there is now without raising cows. "Red meat is bad for you." .Truth: Meat is GOOD for you Saturated fats and cholesterol are not bad for you! FAT DOC 2 IS AVAILABLE ON iTUNES and AMAZON Please also share it with family and friends! The Sodfather is going to make you an offer that you can't refuse. Dr. Peter Ballerstedt was bequeathed the title of The Sodfather, and for good reason. Dr. Ballerstedt is a forage agronomist and ruminant nutritionist, a perfect person to ask about the many myths surrounding raising cattle. Are their farts destroying the planet? How much water do they consume? And does red meat give us heart disease? The Sodfather addresses all of these concerns, and more! And he just started this amazing podcast, Meet Your Herdmates! Who is this guy and what’s he about? I’m trained as a forage agronomist and ruminant nutritionist. I’ve gotten to learn a great deal about human nutrition and metabolic health while I’ve been on this health-restoration journey. I’ve also come to appreciate the gaps that exists between science and policy, and between agricultural producers and the rest of society. To bridge these gaps, I’ve become an advocate for forage and ruminant animal agriculture, and the essential role of ruminant animal products in human health and flourishing. About ten years ago I started blogging and posting on social media about what I called Grass Based Health (“Grass Roots Health” was already taken). It represents that integration of what I’ve learned – healthy soils, healthy plants, healthy animals, and healthy people, all thanks to ruminant animal agriculture. I’ve been given the title of Don Pedro, aka the SodFather. While I’m absolutely serious about the essential role of animal source food in the human diet, and the unique advantages of ruminant animal agriculture in producing those foods, I believe that humor (at least what I think is humor) is helpful in building bridges. The “Meet Your Herdmates” Sodcast is a new effort to introduce members of the Ruminati to each other, so that we might all learn from each other. Thank you for tuning in for another episode of Life's Best Medicine. Today, we are joined by Dr. Peter Ballerstedt—a Forage Agronomist and Ruminant Nutritionist. He earned his undergraduate and masters degrees from the University of Georgia, and his doctorate from the University of Kentucky. He was the forage extension specialist at Oregon State University and has worked in the forage seed industry since 2011. In our discussion today, we talk about the importance of presenting and receiving information in such a way that is honest and not skewed or hyperbolized so that people are able to make their own informed decisions based on the data presented. Additionally, we discuss the supposed “conflict” between the life of science and the life of faith. How can a scientist who is also a person of faith stay grounded in that faith while working in a scientific field? Dr. Ballerstedt shares his perspective on this question. We discuss human beings from a theological/ethical perspective, discerning God-given purposes for one's life, and how to work through addiction, anxiety, and self-doubt. Thank you for listening. Have a blessed day and stay healthy! Links: Dr. Peter Ballerstedt: Twitter Blog YouTube Podcast Email Address: peter.ballerstedt@gmail.com Dr. Brian Lenzkes: Website Low Carb MD Podcast

Today we are joined by Forage Agronomist and Ruminant Nutritionist, Dr. Peter Ballerstedt. His main message for us today is simply this: there is no sustainable food system without ruminant animal agriculture. Ruminant animals (like cows), have gotten a bad rap (from an environmental and a dietary perspective) for a long time, but Dr. Ballerstedt is here to show us the facts—and those facts run quite contrary to the popular perspective. We discuss no-till farming, cover crops, and the importance of soil health, all the while making connections between these agricultural topics and human health/general well-being. We also discuss the contention that, from a food-ethics perspective, the lowest possible amount of organisms are harmed by human agriculture (all things considered) when people eat large herbivores. Welcome to Episode 44, featuring a return guest Peter Ballerstedt - expert on forage agronomy and much else relating to livestock. There's been a lot of discussion of late with regard to livestock and climate impacts - and often the nutrient-density of animal foods is left out of the conversation. Here we have a short 20min chat on some of the key points regarding both, recorded when I caught up with Peter at Keto Salt Lake last April. For those interested in the arena, there are good published papers HERE and HERE which cover the controversy. This week we are talking about using fat for fuel and that means the ketogenic diet! I have been experimenting and researching keto for around 6 months now and it has been eye-opening, especially regarding the recommended dietary information provided by experts and health care professionals. It can be pretty confusing if you don't know where to look, so I want to get someone on the podcast who knows there shit and my man Chris Irvin certainly does! From Chris: "My name is Chris Irvin and I am a nutrition researcher, writer, and educator. I hold a Master’s Degree in Exercise and Nutrition Science and am currently the education manager for Perfect Keto. After spending a couple of years doing research and developing content about keto, I decided to start looking more into the keto industry because I wanted to bring more research and education into the industry. Fortunately, Perfect Keto was looking for someone to improve research and education within there company, something they were already doing very well! I was already a big fan of Dr. Anthony Gustin and the quality products he was making at Perfect Keto so it ended up making a great fit." A vocal advocate for ruminant animal agriculture, Peter Ballerstedt (aka The Sodfather) specializes in forage management and ruminant nutrition. His personal experience led him to study human diet, history, and health. Now he’s on a mission to educate people on the truly sustainable forms of agriculture – those including ruminant animals.
Peter Ballerstedt earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at the University of Georgia and his doctorate at the University of Kentucky. He was the forage extension specialist at Oregon State University from 1986 to 1992. He currently works in the forage seed industry. Peter’s personal experience has led him to re-examine human diet and health. What he has learned doesn’t agree with the advice given for the past several decades. This new understanding combined with his forage background has given him an increased passion for the key to true social, economic and ecological sustainability – ruminant animal production systems – the source of butter, red meat, and cheese! Peter has spoken at many different events in the US and internationally. Many of his presentations are available on YouTube (http://bit.ly/2JJDJpE). Welcome to the Human Performance Outliers Podcast with hosts Dr. Shawn Baker and Zach Bitter. For this episode, we welcome Dr. Peter Ballerstedt who has extensive experience in forage agronomy, agriculture, and ruminants. He was the Forage Extension Specialist at Oregon State University from 1986 to 1992. His personal experience led him to study human diet and health. What he's learned doesn't agree with low-fat-is healthy dietary advice we've been given for more than 30 years. This understanding, combined with his forage background, has given him an interest in the truly sustainable forms of agriculture – those including ruminant animals. Peter Ballerstedt has the background and personality to help us bridge the knowledge gap between how we feed and raise our animals, and how we feed and raise ourselves. His fascinating story begins with understanding animal nutrition and food systems, but quickly transitioned to human nutrition as well after a personal health discovery. Since then, he has become a leading voice to promote a rational and science based approach to ruminant agriculture and how ruminants can save our human health crisis.
This week we interview Dr. Peter Ballerstedt. Please excuse the audio quality. The connection wasn't the best, but the content is just too good not to pass along. Dr. Ballerstedt has an extensive background in forage production, utilization, and forage-based livestock production systems. He was the forage extension specialist at Oregon State University from 1986 until 1992. His personal experience has led him to re-examine human diet and health. What he has learned doesn't agree with the advice we've been given for the past several decades. This new understanding, combined with his forage background, has given him an interest in local, sustainable animal production systems. http://www.grassbasedhealth.blogspot.com http://www.facebook.com/grassbasedhealth http://www.twitter.com/grassbased http://www.instagram.com/grassbased Receive $10 off your order of Real Good Foods when you enter code “fatfueledfam” http://www.realgoodfoods.com Follow us! www.instagram.com/ketocounterculture www.instagram.com/fatfueledmom www.instagram.com/fatfueledkids www.youtube.com/fatfueledfamily Intro song https://soundcloud.com/cosimo-fogg/jazzaddicts-intro Outtro music by Dyalla Swain http://soundcloud.com/dyallas
Dr. Peter Ballerstedt (@GrassBased) has been a huge influence on many minds and myself personally when it comes to meat sustainability. He uses his expertise in Agronomy to offer an interesting counter argument to the claim that ruminant agriculture is destroying the environment. Peter has an extensive background in forage production, utilization and forage-based livestock production systems and was the forage extension specialist at Oregon State University from 1986 until 1992. Peter's personal experience has led him to re-examine human diet and health. Peter and I discuss: Problems with how the general public gets their information today around sustainability Common metrics about sustainability and problems with them Lifecycle assessments The true impact of US cattle on the environment Problems with lab grown "food-like-items" Why food going to cattle is less relevant and low quality vs. high quality food Hormones Grass-fed beef myths Monocropping and land use And much more! Peak Human - Unbiased Nutrition Info for Optimum Health, Fitness & Living
Today we have Peter Ballerstedt who has a Phd in forage production and utilization. He’s also an expert in ruminant nutrition (this means cows, sheep, bison, etc.) He travels around the US and world giving lectures on the necessity and benefits of animal agriculture, for the health of our environment and human nutrition. I love him because he presents facts that go against the mainstream narrative and the animal rights propaganda that is absolutely rampant and taking over the conversation. He’s one of the only voices we have, so appreciate him and listen to his wise words. You may have noticed I skipped a week putting out episodes - I had to prep for our upcoming film tour and make the Shawn Baker and Ted Naiman videos - check them out on Youtube. https://www.youtube.com/c/FoodLies It’s the last days of the Food Lies film Indiegogo campaign - please pre-order the film. It’s the only way to be sure to be able to get it and share it with family and friends. It could take months to get to Netflix or never even make it there. Who knows. Just know you’ll likely get the film 3 months in advance if you pre-order now on Indiegogo before the campaign ends on August 10th. http://indiegogo.com/projects/food-lies-post I really appreciate all the support so far, we can’t do it without you all. Let’s hear what the leader of the Ruminant Revolution has to say. Show notes What Peter does for a living - forage agronomist Eating beef is not only good for you, it is in fact good for the environment as well. All cows spend the majority of their life on pasture The facts around animal agriculture are skewed and basically the opposite of what the mainstream narrative has led us to believe We’re removed from the entire process of raising animals Very small and well-funded minority of animal rights activists with the loudest voices They claim the majority of the land is used for animal agriculture. The truth is there’s 4 times as much rangeland we can use for cows or other ruminants that can’t be used for crops The vegan rope starts unraveling Wildly exaggerated claims of environmental impact if we ate less meat Let’s look at insulinemia and diabetes Animal agriculture more greenhouse gas emissions than transportation based on a flawed and retracted study Cows aren't alchemists. The CO2 containing compounds they release came from the grass they are which got it's CO2 from the atmosphere. They’re finding it harder and harder to try to claim eating meat is bad for you so they’re trying harder and harder to claim it’s bad for the environment Don’t feel guilty if you’re eating some or all animal products in your diet and restoring your health If you haven't heard of Mikhaila Peterson http://mikhailapeterson.com here’s an articel https://www.healthline.com/health-news/meat-only-diet-eased-autoimmune-disease-symptoms#7 Jordan Peterson talks about his carnivore diet on Joe Rogan’s podcast https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGikB-54Lwk We talk about soil health The role of ruminants in reducing agriculture's carbon footprint in North America http://www.jswconline.org/content/71/2/156.short Climate change and CO2 How the carbon cycle actually works with grasses and grazing cows CO2 helps plants to grow faster The great horse manure crisis of 1894 https://www.historic-uk.com/HistoryUK/HistoryofBritain/Great-Horse-Manure-Crisis-of-1894/ plant protein and micronutrient content is far less than animal equivalent Study with oysters, beans, and corn tortillas showing zinc absorption https://www.researchgate.net/publication/22684528_Studies_on_the_bioavailability_of_zinc_in_man_II_Absorption_of_zinc_from_inorganic_sources We can study the diet and outcomes of animals and make lots of conclusions, but can’t do that for humans “Our animals have never been healthier, and humans have never been sicker” Modern societies are dependent on ruminant animals. We need to meet the growing need for animal protein with the growing population. For an ancient food to cause a modern disease is ludicrous The danger of nitrates and nitrites has been debunked Omega 3 and Omega 6 What’s going on with this carnivore thing? All plant diets = healthy hero. All meat diet = insane person who’s going to die “Diet for a Small Planet” and “Population Bomb” Lab grown meat How’d the margarine experiment go? Can you really replicate all the intricacies of meat? It's not just a protein matrix. Do we trust the makers to even get the ratios of fat/protein correct? Ruminants are part of the lifecycle of grasslands and soil health, we shouldn’t exclude them. Essential for watersheds, carbon cycle - what’s their replacement? We shouldn't put a big portion of our food supply into the hands of one company that gets the patent or a few big companies Where are the nutrients going to come from? They’re starting from a false nutritional premise What about other wealth generation from cows, especially in developing countries What about the energy it would take to cool and produce all this lab grown meat? Same thing that’s going on in the healthcare system - we’re making a medication for each disease instead of treating the root problem Eating beef is beneficial to you and the environment Buy the animal products you can afford to feed yourself and your family and don’t let the other side and their fear-mongering influence you. Dr. Peter Ballerstedt is a Doctor of Animal Nutrition and is an expert in forage and ruminant nutrition in agriculture. He stepped out of the agriculture industry for some time and ventured in the tech world for many years. He came back because he realized a fantastic source of health could be found through leveraging animal agriculture, specifically ruminants. A stern believer in grass-based animal nutrition, Peter calls this – the potential of ruminants to lead the way towards healthier diets - the Ruminant Revolution. In this episode, Peter discusses what his Ruminant Revolution is all about. He addresses the need for ruminants and why it’s one of the best sustainable options to support an ever-growing human population. He also dives in on some facts regarding cultivable lands and current innovations in the ruminant agriculture industry. “Our grassland resources are our largest and least well-utilized resource that remains.”– Dr. Peter Ballerstedt This Week on The Future of Agriculture Podcast: What made him love ruminants? Why do we need a Ruminant Revolution? What the is diet like of mostly meat eaters and the diet he recommends today. The steps needed for rangeland industry progression to catch up with road crops? Why Ruminant Animal Agriculture isn't competitive with human beings. Why he favors grass-based agriculture. In episode 18 Peter Ballerstedt and I talk about how sustainable agricultural practices can help people feed themselves better
STARTING A MAJOR BEEF. Dr. Peter Ballerstedt is a forage agronomist. Working in ruminate agriculture (that means predominantly meat and milk), Peter has research and resources at his fingertips making him an expert in controversial subjects such as the consumption of “Grainfed vs Grassfeed beef”. With the dawn of popular nutritional protocols like paleo, a…
Peter Ballerstedt, forage product manager for Barenbrug USA joins the Appropriate Omnivore. Peter puts the "grass" in grass fed meat by explaining how you need the right grass in order to produce the type of animal products you're looking at selling. He explains how he transitioned into this business and talks about how Barenbrug is a worldwide leader in grass. Peter also breaks the myth that grass fed meat has to be lower in fat. He explains that if it's lean, then you're not doing it right.
