Jordan and Charlotte discussing next fund raising event – 3 peaks challenge in 24 hrs perhaps. Or Great North Run. Ryan returns home and when told says either of them would be good. Mentions to Charlotte he has Mario coming round shortly. Are you two ok or do I need to make sure you don't meet up. Matt proposes they have a surprise performance in Victoria Hall – select gathering, showing that despite their national credentials and growing fame they haven't forgotten their home roots. Keanu laughs and reminds him that the original make-up has changed and the roots now not so local. Ari echoes the sentimen Matt just checking to see if the shell of his Porsche has arrived. He spots the back door with graffiti on it which is temporarily acting as the office door. Thinks it is a Banksy – sees money making opportunity – and spins a line about re-decorating his pad and that the “distressed” nature of the door would fit in with his décor nicely. He'd like to take the door of their hands. t but knows it will be good publicity – and that's what matters. Sharon says she could have been knocked over with a feather when she found out it was her ex was on the prowl. Never thought I'd see Frankie Fanshawe again – though I haven't actually seen him. Just felt him ooooooowww sends a shiver right down my spine. Alyson says you wait till I see Neil I'll have a right go that he didn't me. I could have let you let you know earlier Sharon Barry turns up at lunch time with a sandwich for Moll. Hopes Moll doesn't mind but he knows she doesn't always eat. Moll is thankful for Barrys concern and thoughtfulness. Proves again he is good man. Bob says no break-in is going to stop us having a few drinks to say bye to you Dan – even if you're breaking up a good partnership. But right now me and Harry here are going to pop over to Carmella's and pick up the buffet that's on order. Dan appreciative of being made a fuss off and says he'll miss everyone but he's looking forward to the fresh start where no one knows his backstory.

Die die must play!

This started as a podcast on the Bethnal Green Tube disaster in 1943. I was surprised to learn about other crowd crush disasters that I had never heard of before. I have gone into some detail on the Bethnal Green story but then give an overview on the other disasters. The last three crowd crush disasters reported on here are exclusively child death disasters, so not a podcast for everyone. www.strangestoriesuk.gmail.com

Welcome to this episode of Twice 5 Miles Radio. I'm your host, James Navé. I'm thrilled to welcome Maria Masychevia to the microphone. Maria is a globally acclaimed pianist renowned for her victories in some of the world's most prestigious piano competitions, including the M. Long-Jacques Thibaud in Paris, Geneva, and Sendai competitions. Maria's illustrious career includes: Over 500 recitals and orchestral concerts. Gracing the stages of renowned venues like the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory. Zurich Tonhalle. The Great Hall of the Berliner Philharmonie. Berliner Konzerthaus. Victoria Hall in Geneva. Maria says her job is to pair the composer's ideas with her ideas for each composition she plays. Maria believes that music unites us without words. She points out that ego can be an asset creatively if you allow it to be about your focus. She says, "I believe in individual initiative. When you embrace yourself, you become generous. Art is a medicine that encourages more generosity." Maria reminds us that in music, the moment of silence is the moment of the present. At the end of my conversation with Maira, you'll get to hear a mesmerizing performance featuring Maria and her husband, Georgy Gramov, as they play "Rachmaninov-Suite No. 2," a six-minute masterpiece for two pianos. Join me for this enchanting journey into the world of music with Maria Masycheva on Twice 5 Miles Radio. Enjoy the show.

It was a huge privilege for my latest Nostalgia Interview to meet Anne Pőnisch and Vicky Tomlinson, daughters of John Roland Lloyd Thomas who was Principal of Saint David's (University) College for nearly a quarter of a century from 1953 until the mid-1970s. Anne and Vicky remember the days of living behind the College Chapel with its spiders, attics and cellars in an age when students wore academic gowns and had to be back home at around 10pm. They paint a fascinating picture of Lampeter from a different age. We talk about how SDC was not just a theological college, and they remember how students would line up to see their father after supper. Their father enjoyed rugby and cricket and the pastoral side of being Principal was important to him. He did all the admissions work during his time as Principal as well as taking disciplinary measures. They grew up knowing their father was a big fish in a small pond, and remember the diverse range of people they would encounter around the house. We find how things were for their mother whose first husband died in the War, and they talk about how she did all the dinner parties and cooking, in those days. We find out why she didn't let on that she was a Welsh speaker as well as why their father was keen to admit female students. This was an era when it wasn't obvious the College would survive. Vicky reminisces about once being kidnapped near Burgess Hall during Rag, and how there was once a This Is Your Life-type show arranged for their father in Lampeter's Victoria Hall. Anne and Vicky have many records from that era, including the letters that their father would write to them every weekend, and sermons and cine films. We also find out who they are in touch with from that era. Anne and Vicky reflect on how much smaller things seemed when they returned to West Wales as young adults, and we talk about returning to the place of origin. They remember when things changed in Lampeter, e.g. problems around drugs and the police having to be involved, and we learn how their father felt about retirement. Towards the end of the interview, we find out whether they have followed in their parents' footsteps at all and what their parents would have thought about the lives they have led. We learn that their father might not be happy about some developments in the Church, and what he might have thought of women priests, and they refer to the ‘lost souls' that their father was keen to take in to Lampeter who might not have secured a place elsewhere.

Spoiler alert: It's Herbert Rhodes, one of the owners of the many mills in Hadfield and Padfield, and once mayor of Glossop.Plus, how did the reservoirs get their names? The American situation comedy that ran from 1950 to 1952 on NBC radio, created by Fibber McGee & Molly co-creator/writer Don Quinn. The series was adapted into a CBS television comedy (1954–55) produced by ITC Entertainment and Television Programs of America. Here is the background and the conception of the series from Wikipedia sources. British husband-and-wife actors Ronald Colman and Benita Hume starred in both versions of the show. Quinn developed the show after he had decided to leave Fibber McGee & Molly in the hands of his protégé Phil Leslie. The Halls of Ivy's audition program featured radio veteran Gale Gordon (then co-starring in Our Miss Brooks) and Edna Best in the roles that ultimately went to the Colmans, who demonstrated a flair for radio comedy during the late 1940s recurring roles on The Jack Benny Program. The Halls of Ivy featured Ronald Colman as William Todhunter Hall, the president of small, Midwestern Ivy College, and Benita Hume as his wife, Victoria, a former British musical comedy star who sometimes feels the tug of her former profession, and followed their interactions with students, friends, and college trustees. Others in the cast included Herb Butterfield as testy board chairman Clarence Wellman, Willard Waterman (then starring as Harold Peary's successor as The Great Gildersleeve) as board member John Merriweather, and Bea Benaderet, Elizabeth Patterson, and Gloria Gordon as the Halls' maids. Alan Reed (television's Fred Flintstone) appeared periodically as the stuffy English teacher, Professor Heaslip. Other actors who appeared included Virginia Gregg, Lee Patrick, Jean Vander Pyl, Rolfe Sedan, Sidney Miller, William Tracy, Sam Edwards, Arthur Q. Bryan, Barton Yarborough, James Gleason, Jerry Hausner and other actors. The series ran 109 half-hour radio episodes from January 6, 1950, to June 25, 1952, with Quinn, Jerome Lawrence and Robert Lee writing many of the scripts and giving free if even more sophisticated play to Quinn's knack for language play, inverted cliches and swift puns (including the show's title and lead characters), a knack he'd shown for years writing Fibber McGee & Molly. Jerome Lawrence and Robert Lee continued as a writing team; their best-known play is Inherit the Wind. Cameron Blake, Walter Brown Newman, Robert Sinclair, and Milton and Barbara Merlin became writers for the program as well. In subject matter, the program was often notably ahead of its time, forward looking, and willing to tackle controversial topics. "Hell Week," first broadcast on January 2, 1952, boldly addressed the unforeseen dangers of college fraternity hazing. "The Leslie Hoff Painting" (September 27, 1950) and "The Chinese Student" (February 7, 1950) both openly countenanced and dealt with instances of racial bigotry. Another episode centered on an unmarried student's pregnancy. But listeners were surprised to discover that the episode of January 24, 1951, "The Goya Bequest"—a story examining the bequest of a Goya painting that was suspected of being a fraud hyped by its late owner to avoid paying customs duties when bringing to the United States—was written by Colman, who poked fun at his accomplishment while taking a rare turn giving the evening's credits at the show's conclusion. A further treat was the episode of November 22, 1951, in which Jack Benny appeared as himself, in a storyline involving his accepting Victoria Hall's invitation to perform for charity at Ivy College. The sponsor was the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company ("The Beer That Made Milwaukee Famous"). Nat Wolff produced and directed. Henry Russell music director.

For the last episode in this pod mini-series on life and legacy with the wonderful Victoria Hall, it seemed fitting to talk about the ‘art of changing'. Victoria is a Leadership Consultant whose career has ranged from Operational Due Diligence at the UK's largest private pension fund, to assessing C-Suite executives for major corporates and private equity firms. She's super smart, with a first in Land Economy from Cambridge, where we met, and an MSC in psychology. Her mid-covid cancer diagnosis has given her a unique perspective on what is really important in life, and for our legacies, and I think this episode of the pod is a great example. In this final episode in the mini series, we covered changes - from relationships to investment opportunities, bad habits to jobs - with gems from Seth Godin's The Dip through to the Explore/Exploit trade-off and using weighted pros and cons. What's the right work life balance and how do you get it? How can property investment be used to improve work life balance and make it easier to retire comfortably? When should you plan to retire, and how can you retire early (FIRE)? The wonderful Victoria Hall joined me again on the podcast for our mini series on life and legacy - beyond the normal property and investment focus. Why are so many people now questioning the traditional idea of having children? What's the investment case for starting a family - the costs, benefits and alternatives? When and how should, could or would you get started, if it's something you want to do? Why are so many people now questioning the traditional idea of getting married, buying a house and having children, and are they right? How much should you spend on a wedding, and what's the opportunity cost? Is marriage really forever? What are the financial and emotional realities? How does a life-threatening illness like cancer affect your ability to live and your legacy? How do you cope with major life changes that totally redefine your day to day, and your future? Not exactly Christmassy questions, but important! So proud of the wonderful Victoria Hall for sharing her perspectives on these important questions and more on our Christmas episode - the first in a mini series on the non-financial aspects of life and legacy that are so important to us all. Victoria is a Leadership Consultant at @YSC whose career has ranged from Operational Due Diligence at the UK's largest private pension fund, to assessing C-Suite executives for major corporates and private equity firms. She's super smart, with a first in Land Economy from Cambridge, where we met, and an MSC in psychology. So she knows a lot of about investing and about how people think....and, due to a mid-covid stage 3 cancer diagnosis, she also now knows a huge amount about what is really important in life, and for our legacies. At 3pm on the 16th June 1883, approximately 2,000 children attended a variety show at the Victoria Hall in Sunderland. What was meant to be a fun filled afternoon with magic tricks and prizes quickly turned into a nightmare and ended with 183 children dying.
It's 1883. It's The Victoria Hall Sunderland, and an out-of-town prestidigitator is about to take part in the worst theatrical experience since Mel Gibson played Hamlet. In what Health and Safety executives are warning has the potential to be the 26th episode of the CB Wallop Podcast, join Phil Jerrod and Phil Lucas as they discuss The Victoria Hall Stampede - the tiny, tragic mistake that cost the lives of two hundred children, ruined countless more and inadvertently helped us all loiter by the fire escape during our fag break. Is this a new contender for the most horrible episode of CB Wallop ever? ... yes .. unfortunately it is. Trigger Warning!: THIS ONE IS VERY, VERY NASTY. This is about two hundred children being crushed to death. If you have children, or know what children are, parts of it are going to be difficult to hear. The really bad stuff starts at about minute fifteen).
