Beats to Books: Bobby Borg's Path from Performer to Professor

From a young drummer inspired by his dad's big band music to an international musician, Bobby Borg offers some really valuable lessons about reinvention and growth. He realized early on that success in music isn't just about talent—it's also about understanding the business side of things. This led him to write his first book on the music industry, despite not having any formal writing experience. His story shows that it's okay to step outside your comfort zone, take risks, and learn as you go. One of the key insights Bobby shares is the importance of staying true to yourself while evolving. He explains how rebranding, whether it's changing your name or your role, isn't about becoming someone new—it's about adapting and growing in a way that's authentic to who you are. His decision to keep the name “Bobby” as he transitioned into teaching is a great example of how continuity in your personal brand can make all the difference, even as your career takes unexpected turns. Bobby also emphasizes the power of mentorship and coaching. Moving from musician to educator, he shifted from being a professor to a coach to build stronger, more personal connections with his students. His approach is a great reminder that growth is a two-way street, and that helping others succeed can be one of the most rewarding parts of any career. You can be an extremely talented musician with songs that sound like they're destined to fly to the top of the charts or TV instrumentals that could earn a bunch of mailbox money, but there's another “factor” that could stop key music industry executives from wanting to work with you —lacking business skills. More specifically, MUSIC business skills! Which musician would you sign? Given the choice of working with an artist, composer, songwriter, or producer who has a decent, working knowledge of how the “sausage is made” VS the musician who thinks great music is all they need, the industry executives I've worked with for nearly 50 years always seem to sign deals with musicians who have their business s#!t together. Why is that? Because the musicians who understand the business side of the music business are easier to work with, and almost always make more money for all parties involved. Who would you work with?

Ideal Para Llevarte O Regalar Productos Del Podcats De Ivoox.

Music business consultant Bobby Borg stops by to talk about how to succeed as a DIY artist. Bobby is a musician, teacher, and author of the books "Music Marketing for the DIY Musician" and "Business Basics for Musicians." On our show, he talks about how to achieve "career execution" as an indie artist, how to get started in DIY, how to avoid mistakes in your career, the future of the music industry, and much more. You can find out more about Bobby's music business consulting services and his books at bobbyborg.com In the "D Block" segment, Dave brings us a Star Wars-themed edition of "Dave's As Yet Untitled Game Show".
